What really bothers us in the parable is God’s equal rewarding of latecomers and newcomers. We are tempted to ask the question "Is it fair that we, the hard-working Christians, are going to be treated like these workers? Is the man who lives a life of sin but who converts on his deathbed going to get the same reward that we receive? Surely we must warrant at least a higher ranking in heaven on a cloud with the Apostle Paul or Moses or one of the saints!” But the parable tells us that our Heavenly reward is not something we earn but rather a free gift. God has made His rewards available to all through Faith in Christ Jesus. Is it fair that God gives his grace to all? Fair is the wrong word. God does not deal with us “fairly” and it is a good thing! We should be thankful God does not give us what we deserve. The word we are looking for is grace. The question should be "What is grace?" And the answer is, it is that "undeserved love" that God has shown us through the death and Resurrection of His only Son Jesus Christ. Robert Browning reminds us, "All service ranks the same with God: With God, whose puppets, best and worst, are we; there is no last or first.” It is not the amount of service given, but the love with which it is given which matters. Those who carry out the will of God with love and humility will be acceptable before the Lord. The Grace of God The Grace of God

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

24th September 2017

In the first reading, the prophet Isaiah reminds the exiles in Babylon that their

God is more merciful than they are, and more forgiving. He is ready to pardon

the infidelity which has resulted in their exile. Their merciful God will bless

them with material and spiritual blessings. Isaiah exhorts them, and us, to

seek the Lord and to put aside evil ways in order to receive His mercy and

forgiveness. Today’s Responsorial Psalm (Ps 145) reminds us that, although

“the Lord is just in all His ways,” He is at the same time “gracious and

merciful.” In the second reading, Paul offers himself as an example of total

submission to God’s grace and God’s will. He is ready to live continuing his

mission if that is God’s will. At the same time, he is ready to die and join the

Lord if that is God’s will.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us the strange parable of a landowner who hired

labourers at five different times during the course of one day to work in his

vineyard but paid the same living wage for a full day’s work to all of them. This

story of the landlord's love and generosity represents God’s love and

generosity to all of us. It illustrates the difference between God's perspective

and ours. God's provisions for our spiritual lives will never run out, and when

we share our blessings with others, we tap into the inexhaustible Divine

supply. This story shows us how God looks at us, sees our needs and meets

those needs generously and mercifully. The parable also shows the mercy and

generosity of God in allowing the later-called Gentiles as well the first-called

Jews, His Chosen People, to enjoy the same eternal bliss of His Heavenly

Kingdom.

What really bothers us in the parable is God’s equal rewarding of latecomers

and newcomers. We are tempted to ask the question "Is it fair that we, the

hard-working Christians, are going to be treated like these workers? Is the

man who lives a life of sin but who converts on his deathbed going to get the

same reward that we receive? Surely we must warrant at least a higher

ranking in heaven on a cloud with the Apostle Paul or Moses or one of the

saints!” But the parable tells us that our Heavenly reward is not something we

earn but rather a free gift. God has made His rewards available to all through

Faith in Christ Jesus. Is it fair that God gives his grace to all? Fair is the

wrong word. God does not deal with us “fairly” and it is a good thing! We

should be thankful God does not give us what we deserve. The word we are

looking for is grace. The question should be "What is grace?" And the answer

is, it is that "undeserved love" that God has shown us through the death and

Resurrection of His only Son Jesus Christ. Robert Browning reminds us, "All

service ranks the same with God: With God, whose puppets, best and worst,

are we; there is no last or first.” It is not the amount of service given, but the

love with which it is given which matters. Those who carry out the will of God

with love and humility will be acceptable before the Lord.

The members of Religious Orders, (e.g. Franciscans, Dominicans, Sisters of Mercy, Marist Brothers, Christian Brothers, Sisters of Charity etc), taking vows

of poverty, chastity and obedience, must be approved by the Vatican if they are to exist and carry out their mission.

However there are also Religious Groups, the members of which also take these vows, which are also approved by the Vatican and thus can then go about the missionary work for which they were founded. These groups may not be well known to many of us.

On October 4 you have the chance to attend a presentation by such a group which was only formed overseas in 1962 and which later came to Sydney and now also operates in Brisbane.

This is a group called “Verbum Dei - “Word of God”. This group has consecrated priests, consecrated women (not called Sisters) and married couples. You may have read an article about this inspirational group in the Catholic Leader a few months ago. What an interesting group.

Two of the women will come to the Daley Centre at 7.30 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 4, to tell us about the objectives of the group, its approach to prayer, Scripture and spirituality and generally how it goes about furthering the mission which Jesus entrusted to his Church.

Interestingly, Oct. 4 is the feast day of St. Francis and we will have a similar talk about the Franciscans later this month – Oct. 25.

This Sunday, 24 September, is Social Justice Sunday and the Australian

Catholic Bishops Conference is launching its Social Justice Statement for 2017 – 2018. Built around the Gospel Matthew 20:1-16, it’s called Everybody’s Business: developing an inclusive and sustainable economy. Jesus tells the parable of the workers in the vineyard, where all are active contributors and are recognised for their human dignity.

The Bishops call for an economy that is founded on justice and offers dignity and inclusion to every person. In doing so, they emphasise the call of Pope Francis for an economic system that places men and women at the very centre – one that meets the needs of all people and is just and sustainable. Pope Francis denounces economic structures that take a purely utilitarian view of human beings, treating them as mere elements of production, to be thrown away if they are not seen as useful or productive.

To find out more about this year’s Statement, copies are available at the church door, as well as prayer cards and “Ten Steps Towards an Inclusive Sustainable Economy” for a gold coin donation.

“So the last will be first and the first last” - MATTHEW 20:16

You’ve heard the saying “it’s not where you start, but how you finish.” This certainly applies to this Bible passage. We have a responsibility not only for our own lives, but for the lives of others as well. We are called to generously share our gifts with others, not hoard them for our own use. Our gratitude and generosity helps us live “God-centred” lives and not “self-centred” lives.

How can communities of faith respond with compassion and justice, guided by teachings that call us to treat others as we want to be treated, welcome the stranger and recognise the dignity of all people?

Over the past few years this celebration has found a home in our parish calendar. The day gives, in a special way, an opportunity for the parish to

say Congratulations and to give thanks for the many blessings that have been given to each couple and to our community. In a time when legislators are

attempting to redefine the meaning of marriage, we celebrate its integrity.

This day of stories, flowers and morning tea is for parishioners from our three communities - Mitchelton, Grovely and Samford.

Sunday 8th October, 2017 9.30am Mass at Grovely.

Celebrating your 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 or over 50 years of marriage?
