Gangs ’n’ Gals has been written by two Year 11 Drama GCSE students Charlotte Armitage and Rose Blackburne with the supervision and support of Miss Watson. Songs from the 1920s era and other well-known musicals have been combined with the original script and Charleston choreography to produce a super-hot show! With fun characters, interlinked storylines and toe-tapping songs ...it’s a show not to miss!

Charlotte Armitage (11ACD) and Rose Blackburne (11VEB) – Writers The real ideas for Gangs and Gals were formed when it was still referred to by us as 'The Purple Tie Production’. The script itself took shape during lunchtimes and was passed back and forth for weeks across email, with new scenes being added and dialogue and characters appearing and disappearing with every edit. The final scenes weren't actually written until rehearsals were well underway! It has been a fantastic but rather surreal experience to watch a story that was nothing but a figment of our imagination take shape - to watch the characters that were once referred to as 'girl 4' or 'rival gang member 2' be brought to life by students. We’ve also been involved in directing as well. Working with Year 8, the 6th Formers, and Miss Watson has meant that 'Gangs and Gals' has become a much bigger project than scribbles on the back of a worksheet. I’m sure on show nights we will feel rather like proud parents watching their child enter the big wide world. Remember us when our next show hits the West End!

Belgium Battlefield Visit Good luck to 80 of our Year 9 students who set off on their Great War battlefields visit of Ypres and the surrounding region on Friday. The visit is jam-packed full of history and aims to cover the British and German military cemeteries of Tyne Cot and Langemarck, the Diksmunde Museum, the remnants of the Death trench at Diksmunde, and also Talbot House where troops could relax behind the lines.

While there, they will attend and participate in the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate at Ypres and have the opportunity to pay respects to Ilkley Grammar School old boys and, perhaps, family members, who died during the conflict. A wreath will be laid at this ceremony. The visit will also take in the Canadian monument at Vimy Ridge and the French National Memorial at Notre Dame de Lorette near Arras and then on to see Thiepval, Morlancourt Ridge and the Newfoundland Memorial park on the Somme.

Poppy Appeal Each year the nation expresses its unequivocal support for The Royal British Legion's work through the Poppy Appeal. The 2013 Poppy Appeal raised an amazing £39 million. The target for the 2014 Appeal is £40 million. Students can help this year and show their support by buying a poppy from their Key Stage Hub after half term.

On a timely note we received a letter this week from one of our ‘Old Boys’ , Ian Shaw who attended IGS in the mid nineteen forties, he is now 86 years old. It’s lovely to hear ex students memories of life at IGS and just how much as changed over the years.

‘What prompted this letter was an old photograph I came across going through my archives. It is of the I.G.S. 1st. X1. 1944. Mr Ernie Sparham is on the extreme left, I am third from the left back row. Scorer, Rummelsberg is on the extreme right. Captain, Desmond Marks with the bat.

Mr Newby was Head Master, who took over from Mr Evans (known as Chuff) acting Head I believe. At that time Mr Evans taught Mathematics.

I also remember Mr Silk (History and Rugby), Mr Sparham (Physics and Cricket), Mr Leadbetter (Art and Gym), Miss Atkinson and Mr Bartel. About ten years ago my wife and I were visiting Ilkley and I took time to walk in (the still imposing front entrance) and have a look around. Vast changes have taken place. Much to my parents chagrin, I was not a very good student. and left school at an early age and went to work at Scott's Garage, Ilkley for, if I remember correctly, "fifteen bob a week". The Shaw family lived at the bottom of Wheatley Lane, very near the Leeds Road and I remember clearly all the military traffic, moving south as D-day was approaching.’

IOS 8 Upgrade - Urgent It is essential that all students update their iPad to IOS 8 and then continue to update all apps. It is becoming more frequent that students cannot open the documents they require during lessons because a large number of iPads have not been updated.

Calling all Dancers! A contemporary dance workshop run by Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD) has been planned for December. The workshop is free of charge and will take place in school on Monday 8th December 3-5pm (in the Gym). NSCD are a Centre for Advance Training in Dance and run the Yorkshire Young Dancers (YYD) scheme. The YYD and NSCD aims to provide 13-17 year olds access to high quality dance training whilst developing creative potential as dancers. The workshop at Ilkley Grammar School offers an opportunity for students to experience contemporary dance and to consider if the YYD scheme would be suitable for them. A dance artist from NSCD will deliver a 2 hour workshop based on contemporary technique and choreography. This workshop also acts as a preliminary audition onto the YYD scheme. If students would like to take part, letters are available from Miss Watson and should be signed and returned by parents/carers. The deadline to confirm a workshop place is 27th November.

Work Experience Well done to Year 11 who have spent this week out in the workplace for their work experience week. We have had a real mix of businesses involved, from restaurants to engineering firms, museums, newspapers and sporting organisations.

Whether they stayed local or travel further afield, we know it can sometimes be a bit overwhelming leaving school, friends and familiar surroundings for a week, but they all rose to the challenge! The feedback already received, as you would expect, has been super and we look forward to welcoming them back into school on Monday 3rd November.

From this year we are moving the work experience week to the week commencing 13th July, to coincide with the school’s Challenge and Celebration week. This brings new challenges to the students as they will be in Year 10 and competition for placements is keen at this time. Local businesses can expect to be contacted by our students requesting placements for this week within the next few weeks.

However, if any parents feel they are in a position to offer a placement please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Cowley the work experience coordinator, [email protected].

Bullying UK Survey To mark their 15th year anniversary, Bullying UK is running three surveys to look at bullying in more depth.

The purpose of the surveys are to provide them with in-depth information on bullying and how it affects children, young people, parent, carers and teachers. They are running the surveys for a few months so they can get as many responses as they can and get a picture of how bullying truly affects our society and the people in it. The survey is anonymous, confidential and should only take about five minutes to complete. They aim to have the results of the survey in time for anti-bullying week 2014. Click here to take the survey.

Year 8

Our Year 8 assembly this week was taken over by The Great Year 8 Bake Off! Over the last few weeks, cakes have been baked and tasted, with finalists gaining a place from each tutor group for Thursday’s final.

The cakes looked...and tasted...delicious.

The judges poked, prodded and tasted their way through the fine array of baked goodies, and named both a student tutor group and tutor winner!

GCSE Overview

Year 11 PE Options Each year, as part of the Key Stage 4 curriculum, we offer students the opportunity to participate in an extended range of sporting and recreational activities during their PE lessons on Friday afternoons. This has proved to be a very successful and popular aspect of the Year 11 programme in PE and we are therefore delighted to be able to offer the following options again this year:

Zumba Ice-Skating Ten Pin Bowling Aireborough Gym ILTSC Gym Squash Football School Activities

To enable us to provide such a varied programme, we use external agencies and qualified instructors/coaches. However, this does mean that for certain activities we must ask students to contribute towards the cost of facilities, tuition and any travelling expenses incurred (£3 per session, unless students are a member of the club, where we ask for 0.50p per session). All instructors/coaches are fully CRB checked and possess the current qualification in the activity. For activities which are not on the school site, the following arrangements will apply:

Squash + ILTSC Gym - students make their own way down to ILTSC during their lunchtime to arrive at 1.15pm. A member of the PE staff will meet them at the club and be present throughout the session. A squash coach will also be available to us for coaching during the afternoon. Students using the Fitness Suite will be given an initial induction session then supervised for subsequent sessions. All students will be dismissed from the Club at 2.30pm.

Ten Pin Bowling - travel by school minibus to Skipton Bowling Alley. We return to school for 3pm. School PE staff present throughout the afternoon.

Aireborough Gym - travel by school minibus to Aireborough Sports Centre. Return to school for 3pm. The Sport Centre’s fitness instructors give induction sessions to tall students at their first session, then supervise and assist as necessary at subsequent sessions. School PE staff present throughout the afternoon.

Ice Skating - travel by school minibus to Bradford Ice Rink. Approx. 1 hour 'free' skating then return to school for 3pm. Tuition from a qualified instructor for half the session, then time for ‘free’ skating. School PE staff present throughout the afternoon.

Zumba (on site in school Gym) – taught by a qualified instructor. Member of PE staff will register group at the start and be available if needed in the Sports Hall.

During the year, students are allocated 3 options according to their preferences. Each option block is for 3 sessions. This service has been uploaded to parent pay with a payment date of Friday 28th November. If you have any queries or concerns regarding the Year 11 options programme in PE, please contact [email protected]

Tweet Tips Our official school twitter account @ilkleygrammar is a fantastic way to keep in touch with parents, interact with the local community and share events and success with a wider community. There are some very useful tips on Bullying UK’s website, informing parents and students alike on how to remain safe on twitter.

Advice on staying safe on Twitter from Bullying UK—Tweet Sensibly Twitter is a very popular social network used by many different age groups, and especially used by many celebrities to keep in touch with fans and by citizens all over the world to break news stories or just say what they are up to at any given moment. While Twitter has been great at helping people communicate quickly and in a very open manner, it's not without its problems. Always follow the usual rules of cyber safety and in addition here are some Twitter specific safety tips.

Twitter safety tips Never give out your real address, or any personal details - remember on Twitter everything you say can

be open to the world

Never give out your password - also be extra careful when you sign into Twitter through other websites. (Some are scams trying to find out your log-in details!)

Think before you Tweet! - anyone can see what you say unless you make your profile private. Don't Follow Back people you don't know, this can help protect you against Direct Message spam. You can still talk publicly using @replies.

Go private If you don't want the world to see everything you say on Twitter make your profile private, the option is in your settings on Twitter.com. That way only people you follow back will be able to see your updates, your tweets will also be hidden from the public search as well.

Pictures and other media As with any internet service be careful what you post on Twitter, it's really easy to post pictures or video onto Twitter but you must take care not to post anything that could embarrass you later or get you or anyone else into trouble.

Twitter and your location One of Twitter's more advanced features is being location aware. That means if you turn the feature on people will be able to see where you posted a tweet from, using your exact location. Stay clear of this feature if you want to remain private.

Prevent your Twitter account from being hacked or stolen Sometimes people will try to take over Twitter accounts so they can send private messages or spam to a person's followers but there are lots of ways you can guard against it. Don't click links in Direct Messages unless you were expecting a link from that user. Most hacks happen when you put your Twitter log-in details into a compromised or fake website. Be careful of sites that look like Twitter.com but aren't. Only log-in to Twitter.com if you typed the link in directly or accessed through a link you know is safe (Bookmark). If a link is not a Bit.ly link be extra careful. Bit.ly is the most popular link shortening service and does a good job at fighting these nasty links. If you think your account has been hacked change your password immediately. If you can't log-in you can use the password reset tool on the Twitter support site to generate a new random password to your email address.

In or Out? On Wednesday 22nd October our Post 16 students hosted an EU debate for all Year 12 students during the general studies lesson. They invited David Bowe a pro EU speaker and former member of the European Parliament and Paul Latham a Eurosceptic speaker and prospective UKIP parliamentary candidate for the Keighley and Ilkley constituency. The Year 12 students who are studying general studies were given the opportunity to hear a full range of views on the EU, and to engage in genuine debate about its nature.

Civitas, in conjunction with the European Movement, organises debates on the EU and used their network of nation wide political speakers to offer David Bowe pro-EU and former MEP and Paul Latham EU-sceptic and prospective parliamentary candidate for the Keighley and Ilkley constituency. Students were involved first-hand in the arguments surrounding membership of the EU, this encourages students to become active members in society equipped with greater political awareness.

Students Lewis Abbey, Fiona Cram, Nathan Kett and Saffron Cockcroft led the debate. Their roles included introducing the speakers, providing a context of EU facts, inviting questions from the audience and asking their own questions. Although they were nervous about being sat in front of their peers (on the stage), they acted maturely and conducted themselves fantastically by shaking the speakers hands and encouraging Year 12 students to get involved and ask questions. Students and staff learnt a great deal about both sides of the argument. Presenting both sides of the debate encouraged the students to think critically about how they structure their writing to include a balanced argument and provide detailed evaluation.

Saffron Cockcroft (12JLI), Nathan Kett (12DXB), Fiona Cram (12PC) and Lewis Abbey (12DXB) led the debate

A Message from the Lady Mayoress Mrs Elizabeth M Sharp It is my cherished ambition to create a district-wide talent competition that crosses all boundaries of school age, is fully inclusive, totally cohesive, and free to enter. This, then, is the Lady Mayoress Festival of Talent, and is aimed at all primary, secondary and further education establishments throughout the Bradford Metropolitan District. I need you to get involved.

How? As I have visited schools since becoming Lady Mayoress, I have been struck by the number of children and young people who have huge amounts of talent in the sphere of performing arts. I wish to provide them with an opportunity to showcase their talent in a free-to-enter competition that will climax in as ‘showbiz’ a final as we can create, to take place in the Henry Mitchell Theatre in Bradford College in early March. There will be three winning age groups, as mentioned above. Each winner will take part in the Schools Proms at St George’s Hall on 25th and 26th March, 2015. They will receive a trophy, a certificate, an opportunity to perform at a Lord Mayor civic event, and afternoon tea for themselves and their families in City Hall with the Lady Mayoress. Performances must be to a maximum of three minutes, and can be in Singing, Dance, Instrumental Music playing, Drama, Comedy, etc. and can be solo, duos, trios, quartets, etc. groups, bands, choirs. The only stipulation is that the performances are student-led, created by the performers themselves. While their support and advice is encouraged, teachers should have no input in the creative process. I want your school in there! I already have a few, but I need so many more. I envisage this to be a high-profile event that in the later stages, i.e. semi-finals and finals, will raise money for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal as tickets will be sold to the general public and to all supporters. You may already know that the Lord Mayor’s Appeal this year is supporting Marie Curie and a community-based project of his devising called ‘Make It Happen’, in which small sums of money are donated to help people less well-advantaged to create something good for them, and to fulfil, if possible, cherished ambitions, such as leading the Bradford City Football Team on to the pitch at Valley Parade, etc. If you are interested in this exciting initiative, contact the Music and Arts Service at http://www.bradfordmusiconline.co.uk/site/lady-mayoress-festival-of-talent/ to register your involvement. The closing date for acceptance is 27th October and all acceptances must be received by that date. So please, what are you waiting for? It’s time to shine. With warmest wishes and grateful thanks,

Elizabeth M Sharp, Lady Mayoress, BMDC 2014/15
