Welcome Bridget The Board has recently appointed Bridget Scoular to take over in Rm1 while Jodie takes a year’s leave to go sailing around the Pacific. Bridget comes from Christchurch and has been teaching for 10 years with much of it at Sumner School. Bridget comes with reputation for making learning fun and brings a wide range of creative skills to the classroom. She has strengths in writing, maths, music, ICT, Te Reo, visual art and science Bridget’s outside interests are gardening, reading, music listening and playing – guitar and ukulele and piano, creating things for school and home, beekeeping, crosswords, walking, yoga, friendships and whanau plus her wee west highland white terrier. Prior to teaching Bridget held various positions within television production industry – for TVNZ, CTV and Prime – as a videotape editor, facilities officer, floor manager, commercial producer – both freelance and permanent work. She produced and directed her own chil-dren’s programme for TV3 – called “The Big Chair. She also spent a lot of time working as a floor manager on vari-ous sporting events including rugby, athletics, netball, cricket and softball. We are looking forward to Bridget becoming part of our team.

Board of Trustees Elections We will be holding our Board of Trustee elections on 18 May and calling for nominations from 11 April with nominations closing on 4 May. We are looking for an enthusiastic group of parents to help with setting a vision for our school so that Motupipi continues to be a place where you want to send your children. Junior Football

'Whole of Football' (non-travelling football) for all girls and

boys aged 4 to 10 will start on Saturday the 7th of May at

the Recreation Grounds.

There are three age groups: 4-6, 7-8 and 9-10.

We currently have coaches for the older two groups but

need someone to offer to take the 4 to 6 year olds. Full

support and training will be provided.

Dental Bus

The mobile dental unit will be at Takaka Primary School from Tuesday 26th April until Friday 3rd June. It is preferable for parents to attend their child’s initial examination in case the Dental Therapist needs to discuss oral hygiene or results from xrays taken. If parents are unable to attend, could they please phone the 0800 number on their appointment letter.

SCIENCE / TECHNOLOGY KITS

We recently purchased a number of technology kits and the children have been building a variety of electrical circuits, making helicopters and cars and boats and generally experimenting with the equipment. As well as having fun there has been a lot of learning going on.

ROOM TWO

ROOM ONE WRITING The Dune Day—by Rhys I wish you could see this view! It was a “Santastic!” I felt grand. I sniffed the salty sea. I saw an enormous sand dune and I ran for it but it was closer than I thought. I stumbled up the dune. I steadied myself and went whizzing down the dune. “I’m coming. I tripped and gota a face full of sand. It was a ‘sandtastrophy’. We started walking again. I found some kelp and it was very rubbery. I kept walking and we got to a cave. I took out my knife and started carving. Just then a big gust of wind blew my hat off it was a ‘hatastrophy’. I ran for it and jumped to grab it and fell face first into the sand. I finally caught up with that hat. It was an amazing day.

Killer Caving—Part 1 by Carlos Whoa! That cave surely took my breath away, and I’ve never believed in up-drafts? But this up-draft was so huge that if I fell I thought that I would just drift to the bottom. I know that’s scientifically impossible, but hey that would be fun! I clambered down the massive mouth of the cave. I wouldn’t have held onto the safety rope if I didn’t have to. The cavern took my breath away it was fantastic! No, it was awesome. No, it was beautiful. No, it was all of them combined but, even that wouldn’t be enough to describe its “epicness.” In fact it was absolutely amazing! It was the most breath-taking marvellous sight I had ever seen! Actually I wondered why...

The Gigantic Bike Ride—by Poppy I had just made it on the beach on my bike. The sun was shining down while I made an awesome hat out of drift wood. I made a wee pathway out of stones and then I started decorating it with my friend Anna. Dead ferns, shells, all of these and more decorations. Anna and I also made a small camp fire for our game and we were set…. Wait, What? We have to go already! Ha! Fine!. I put my shoes back on as well as my helmet and got on my bike again….bump! bump! bump! bump! Over the stones and up the hill. The wind pushed us every now and then. Down the hill...Weeeeee! We had to do silly faces at the bottom of the hill for photos. I did an extra weird pose.

We gave the kids an opportunity to have a go with scuba gear in the pool this week. They really enjoyed the feeling of cruising along under water without having to come up for a breath.

The Biggest Cave Ever—Ashley I was clambering up the steepest mountain in the world! There was gorse and prickles. I kept wondering to myself “Are we there yet?’. Finally we got there, the cave was ginormous!! I slid down the muddy entrance. There were stalactites and stalacmites. I saw two dead cows. Bigfoot probably ate them! I had a couple of biscuits for afternoon tea and eventually we left the cave and walked back to camp.

The Biddibids—by Yoshi We went to a massive cave on camp. Boy it was a big walk to the cave. It took one hour to get there at least, but worth it though. The first things I saw in there were stalagtites and stalagmites throughout the cave. At the end the wind blew like a fan. On the way down the hill, Trey and I got Riley with biddibids all over his Ridgeliner bag. Riley did not know that we got him, it was really funny!

Tasman Mako Training

Last week, Quentin Strange, ex Collingwood Area School student and current squad member of the Tasman Mako team came in and worked with a group of our keen rugby players, going through a number of skills and drills with them. He had planned to work with all the classes but wet weather meant we could only accommodate a small group. It was an opportunity for the kids to realize that even though you come from a small place you can still succeed if you follow your dreams.

Scuba Diving
