A Letter from the Director
Henry Bohne will make a presentation on the history and evolution of the destroyer Navy fighting ships, of which about 1000 have been built and commissioned through the years. Anyone interested in hearing the stories of veterans is welcome.
I’m sure you have seen that the Senior Center made the front page of the
News-Press on December 5th. Let me just say this….as in all instances, Rich - our Board President - and I will always look at ways to sustain this
Center. Sometimes an innocent question turns into an impactful statement! I
believe this is what happened this time with the question of, “What would happen
if donations and grants didn’t meet your expectations?” The answer, “As with
any business, if our funding is not sufficient to cover our expenses, then we will
have to look at cutting programs and services,” which turned into the “Senior Center Facing Cutbacks” headline. We want to assure everyone that we are
budgeted properly to see us through 2014!
I hope your year is full of hope and accomplishments! One of our hopes here
at the Center is to get our time capsule project completed, so look for more information to follow. An accomplishment would be to get our directory out to
the membership. We will take more member pictures in the coming months, so
look for it on the calendar and stop by to smile.
We had a suggestion in the box that each of us have a name tag to wear on outings and events. Our volunteers have an engraved name badge. These name
badges cost $5, so we have only purchased them for the volunteers. We do have
temporary name badges that are available and you can stop at the front desk and
ask for one. It is a good idea to put one on when you’re on an outing.
On another note, I’d like to take this opportunity to praise the work and
efforts of our Veterans group. If you have any interest at all in the military efforts
of our people, and our nation, this is a great group to participate in.
Larry Adams now leads our group, Remembering our Veterans (ROV). Larry
is a retired engineer and a scholar who studies American History. Larry and his
wife recently became members and join us many days at our Volunteer of
America meals on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. This would be a great time to sit
down and talk to him about any interest or knowledge you have with our military
events. Due to the great effort of Larry, and others, this group was able to
provide presentations at Douglas County High School and the Douglas County
Library on World War II and the Korean War. Larry also became active with the
Douglas County Libraries Veteran History Project. Many of our veterans have
been interviewed for their stories so they can be placed in the Library of
Congress. What a wonderful thing to be a part of. Thank you Larry for taking
the lead on this group and making such a great effort! Thank you to Maxine McDonald and the late Bob Aust for their vision for this group!
Another THANK YOU - this goes out to Jan Brush for polishing our silver set.
It looks quite nice and we have had many compliments on it! Thank you Jan!
- Terry

As the New Year begins, we begin another season of recognizing wonderful volunteers who are the heart and soul of this place and make this center what it is. This month we honor Sara Dunn, a caring and giving volunteer who fits that bill. Sara was born in Duluth, Minnesota and moved to Colorado at age four. She grew up in the area and then graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in microbiology. She met her husband on a blind date while she was a student at CSU. They have been married for forty-eight years and have two grown children, a daughter and a son. It was after her children grew up that she went to work in the finance and accounting field. Sara now has four grandchildren all born in the month of September, so that is quite a special month for her family. Sara and her husband love camping and the out-of-doors, which started when their kids were young and they went tent camping. Now she gets to visit the grandkids in Oregon in their RV! Traveling and reading are some of her favorite pastimes, along with animals, horseback riding, exercising and attending church. As a volunteer for the Senior Center, Sara has shown how much she cares and how much she gives of herself. Sara has been with the Volunteers of America Dining Program for several years, where she helps serve meals in the dining room and even delivers Meals on Wheels to those who are homebound. She also helps out with other Senior Center events. Sara is one of the many people the Senior Center is thankful for this New Year. Thank you for
all that you do.

Castle Rock Senior Center
Gluten is a complex protein found in wheat, barley, rye and possibly oats, to name just a few sources. Used for individuals with celiac disease, this diet restriction has become very popular recently, with individuals choosing to follow it for a variety of disorders.
With celiac disease, an inherited autoimmune disorder, the immune system responds when glutens are eaten by damaging the villi, the small fingerlike protrusions lining the small intestines. This dam-age affects the body's ability to absorb nutrients properly and a person becomes malnourished no matter how much food they eat. Celiac disease can develop at any point in your life. Affected people are more likely to have other autoimmune disorders (rheumatoid arthritis and lupus), osteoporosis, intolerance to lactose, and intestinal cancer to name just a few.
While symptoms differ from one person to the next, some common ones are: abdominal pain, bloating, gas, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, pale, foul smelling, or fatty stool, and weight loss. Since symptoms vary with individuals, diagnosis is difficult and can be confirmed with blood tests and a small bowel biopsy. Eating a gluten free diet can help control or prevent symptoms of the disease and even reverse the damage to the small intestine. Foods that are the staples in a gluten-free diet include beans, corn, fruits and vegetables, meats-poultry-fish without breading or gravies, milk-based items, potatoes and rice. Some people can eat oats. Just like with other "popular" dietary trends in our society, manufacturers have "climbed on the bandwagon," and now there are gluten free products in every grocery store — often quite costly. There are many ongoing studies to look at the effect of glutens on a variety of disorders, from autism to psoriasis, which is another autoimmune disorder. If you feel you may have a gluten intolerance, you should start with a simple blood test ordered by your physician. If this shows you do need to eliminate glutens, the next step is to meet with a dietician to learn about your diet choices to assure you are getting the adequate nutrients and vitamins that your body needs. I suspect we will continue to hear about a gluten free diet in the years to come. (info: www.nih.gov)

January 2014 A big “Thank You“ to all who have helped us with our fundraising events!
2013 has come to an end and it has been a busy one for us! Fundraising activities increased, and for the most part, were successful. We continuously work to find activities that benefit the Center and make us visible to the surrounding community. The success of the past year is a tribute to the wonderful support of all our members. We all contribute by volunteering at the fundraising events and/or joining friends for dinner at a “Dining to Donate“ event, or participating in a variety of other ways.
Julia Keeler, 1st Vice President and I, Doris Rollins, 2nd Vice President, thank you. We are successful because of your support.
Best wishes for the upcoming New Year,
Julia and Doris

due in the coming months, look for your letter about a

There is a new section in our library - SNEAK PEAK. These books are called Publishers’ Proofs, which are
advanced, uncorrected copies of books not yet published. You may take them to read and
enjoy, but please return them for others to use. We will not have these in our Book Sale, as
they cannot be sold. They have been donated to us to read them “as is” before publication. There should be a
continuing supply available for our pleasure. Subjects will vary, so come in, look for the Sneak Peak logo, and see for
yourself. I have taken one home to read titled In Fallen Snow by Mary-Rose MacColl. I will tell you about it soon.
Thanks to a wonderful donor for arranging this great opportunity.
I also want to thank everyone who volunteered to help set up, sell and take down our Book Sale at the Craft Show.
You are wonderful helpers and much appreciated.
I hope you all have a wonderful new year, Dee Thompson
We are getting ready for our “Baby
Shower” in March. This is where we
collect baby items to donate to Denver
Health for underprivileged newborns. If
you knit or crochet, start making those
baby hats and booties - we have yarn and
patterns here. For those who sew, blankets
are appreciated. We also need donations of yard pieces of baby flannel for the bags.

The Douglas County Lions Club participates in the international
Lions Club program which provides glasses for people in third
world countries. There is a box for your donations at the Senior
Center, so just drop them in. The glasses are cleaned, sorted
and prescriptions read by prisoners in the judicial system, and
then sent overseas to provide such joy to others.

We are proud of our community partnership with Jerry Street and Park Street Storage. We
appreciate their continued support of the Castle Rock Senior Center. Non-profits must continually
rely on the generosity of the local business community. For more information, contact them at

Local high schools are preparing for their spring musicals - and these shows are so good, you’d think it
was professional. If you are 60 or older you can go to all the athletic events and performing arts shows at any
district school for FREE - this includes those incredibly popular high school musicals. All you need is a “Gold
Card” and you get those at the Douglas County School District Administration Building on Wilcox at the
switchboard (showing proof of age and residency. The card can then get you and a guest (also a senior) in with
no charge. What a great benefit.
Castle Rock’s Panera Bread and the Starbucks on
Castle Pines Parkway and Debbie Lane both donate
breads and pastries to our Center. We thank them
for their generosity and hope you will think of them
in your holiday shopping. We do enjoy their
goodies and so will others you buy for.
