22ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 30, 2020

Last week, I spoke with a priest friend, a pastor from the inner city. He told me about the challenges he encoun-tered in his parish supporting the families, to be the place where their children learn about the faith. With often one parent missing (usually the father) children experience an emotional gap. That results in a deep psychological pain, that forces the child to go on a search for something that might be a medication. On the streets, those 'solutions' are widely available. Anyone can imagine what those things might be. What I didn't know was, that gang leaders have a ritual in which the new member is 'claimed.' The new boy or girl can consider the gang now as their family, and will receive a task and a purpose in it. Something reminiscent of pickpocket Arthur Dodger's song in Oliver Twist:

Consider yourself at home, Consider yourself a part of the family, We've taken to you so strong, It's clear we're going to get along. One strong characteristic of the Hebrew tradition of parenting is that the father would claim his child as being part of the clan. That was part of the idea that children not only belong to the present time, they also belong to the covenant that started with Abraham, a divine instrument that eternally realizes God's mercy in the world. In the surrounding religions of Israel, the father-Gods were seen as senile, weak and inef-fective. Basically role-models for Al Bundy from "Married with Children." Not so in the Jewish-Christian tradition. It was the father who presided in the liturgies of the home, taking his responsibility for carrying forth the tradition from which he himself was raised. Some of this is still present in the welcoming rite at infant baptisms. The presider welcomes the family, asks for the child's name and 'claims' it in the name of Jesus Christ by making a sign of the cross on its forehead. After that, he invites the parents and godparents to do the same. I find this always a very meaningful begin-ning of the baptismal liturgy. Wouldn't it be great if we picked up that tradition a bit more? I know that some parents sign the foreheads of their children every day, either with a sign of the cross or with a kiss. We shouldn't underestimate the value of doing such a thing. It is deeply affirming for a child to be claimed by the parental love that originates in Christ. It is like making this pledge to the child: If it should chance to be, We should see, Some harder days, Empty larder days, Why grouse? Always a chance we'll meet! (Arthur Dodger's song continued...)

MT 16:21-27

Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay all according to his conduct.”

JER 20:7-9 You duped me, O LORD, and I let myself be duped; you were too strong for me, and you triumphed. All the day I am an object of laughter; everyone mocks me. Whenever I speak, I must cry out, violence and outrage is my message; the word of the LORD has brought me derision and reproach all the day. I say to myself, I will not mention him, I will speak in his name no more. But then it becomes like fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones; I grow weary holding it in, I cannot endure it.

ROM 12:1-2

I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.

22ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 30, 2020

Get to know your child’s online activities More and more children will be relying on the internet to con-tinue their education this year. For parents who have already instilled strict screen time guidelines, having children online for school can be cause for concern. Talk to your children about appropriate online behavior, how to know what sites they should and should not visit, what to do if they find them-selves on an inappropriate site or in an exchange that makes them feel uncomfortable, as well as how they should handle themselves on social media and other online correspondence. Your child’s teachers will likely have detailed plans for how to handle any online schooling. Talk to them about what apps or websites your child will need, and their plans for protecting children from cyber bullying, inappropriate contact, and other online dangers. For more information, visit https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
