Parish Pastoral
Council
Each year at this time we invite parishioners to consider serving their
parish as a Pastoral Council representative. The Parish Pastoral Council is an ordinary group of parish-ioners who assist the Pastor in an advisory capacity. The Council supports the Pastor and participates in planning parish goals and objectives that are then implemented by the various Parish Commissions. Thus, the Council provides a unifying structure to the parish community. It also functions to bring forward ideas from parishioners on various aspects of parish life. Council members serve three year terms, and meet monthly, eight times a year (the are no summer meetings, nor does the Council meet during the Advent or Lenten Seasons). There are two openings for Council for the 2014-2017 term, both would commence in September of this year. If you would like to consider serving in this capacity or would like to nominate another for this role, please contact Fr. Ken at the Parish Office (313-278-5555 or [email protected]). Anyone nominated by another would first be contacted to see if they would consider being a representa-tive. All those willing to fill these two open positions would have their names drawn by lot on Pentecost Sunday, June 8th, 2014 at the 9:30 A.M. Mass.

Sacred Heart Happenings As the third quarter came to a close, our Sacred Heart students participated in some fun activities. One activity was “Math Day,” which was held in the gym. The school was divided into two groups: K – 2 and 3-5 with the mid-dle school students supporting their K-2 buddies. All of the teachers organized and led a couple of engaging math activities, such as: math bingo, tangram patterns, math puzzles, card & dice games, estimation jars, etc. The students were able to improve their math skills as they traveled from station to station. It was evident that the students enjoyed this experience of hands-on learn-ing. Another special event was “Detroit Tigers Day.” To kick off the new baseball season, the faculty and students showed their Tiger pride by wearing their favorite orange and blue apparel. In addition, the school donated money to the St. Kateri “Pitch for Priesthood’ fundraiser. These activities are just a few examples of how our Sacred Heart students continue to expand their academic excel-lence and join together as one faith-filled community.

Changing Lives Together (CLT) In 2012 pledges were made by 493 households totaling $759,537 to support CLT. To date $474,423 (62.5%) has been paid. The AOD retains 30% of all contributions. The remaining 70% ($332,096) is paid to Sacred Heart. Of this amount, 37% is allocated ($122,875) to the School Endow-ment Fund. The remaining 63% ($285,114) will be used to pay for various planned CLT projects. As we enter the 3rd year of the program, we thank all of those who are actively supporting CLT.
2014-2015 Budget Our budget for the 2014-2015 FY was completed and will be filed with the AOD by May 15. The new budget is based on lower weekly offertory donations of $12,900 compared to our current year budget of $13,462. We continue to review expenses and attempt to keep them in control.

COME AND SPEND
SOME QUIET,
PEACEFUL TIME
AND HEAR WHAT
OUR LORD, JESUS,
IS SAYING TO YOU.
The men of the parish are invited to a SILENT weekend retreat at Manresa, the Jesuit Retreat House in Bloomfield hills. (The spirit of silence is so important in order to have a spirit of prayer and hear Jesus speak in your heart.) If it is necessary to talk there are places available. The Jesuits give group con-ferences and time for reflection throughout the retreat. If you wish, priests are available for a personal talk. There is a Heal-ing Service on Saturday evening. For those who are able, there is Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for half hour periods during the night on Saturday. The Retreat begins on Friday May 2, 2014 with arrival from 5:00 p.m to 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 7:00 p.m. The Retreat con-cludes by 1:00 p.m. Sunday, May 4. The only cost is your presence and whatever donation you are able to give. For more information or reservation call Don Kostrewa 313-271-8455 or Manresa Jesuit Retreat House 248-644-4933
Making people cry. The phone line went silent. A long pause. Then came a sob and a tearful, barely audible thank you. When the woman
gathered herself, the joy and gratitude flowed. “Thank you, thank you, thank you so much.” She and her housemate had asked for food. It was just a few days before Easter. The woman had lost her job two months ago and was frantically looking for work, even posting flyers at stores and gas stations for “miscellaneous duties.” The man had a full time job, but was paying down bills inherited from a late parent and was struggling to keep a roof over his head. The couple had received a utility shutoff notice during Holy week. Because you support the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) at Sacred Heart and Divine Child, we were able to respond to their needs quickly. We visited the couple in their home and got to know them and their situ-ation. They offered to share their only bottle of soda. The refrigerator was empty. We provided immediate food as-sistance and prevented the shutoff. The funds you shared bought this couple time. They now have a little time to look for work. Time to pursue debt solutions. Time to sleep well and time to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Thank you for your continuous support of the SVdP. Remember, need knows no season. Please pray for the poor.

A hearty thanks goes out to all the people who helped with our recent Easter projects. Anne Pennisi, Carol Hutcherson, Terri Gall, and all the office staff were extreme-ly helpful and patient with me as I coordi-nated the projects. The meals for the home
bound on Holy Thursday were donated and prepared by the lovely ladies of St. Cecelia's Cirlce, and Sandy Drinnan made all the phone calls. Michele Harris and her children, Debbie Greco, Marietta Lynch, Arlene Fedewa, and Sue Audi and her children delivered the meals. Amy Meszaros, Debbie Greco, Ellen Johnson, and Rita Walkuski made Easter baskets for some deserving children. The students of Sacred Heart School and Religious Education donated food for our Easter food bas-kets. Bob Horvath collected and brought to us food donated by Trillium Family Dentistry, United Churches Credit Union, and Phyllis Madigan and her friends at Hubbard Manor. Art Hughes at the Dearborn Farm Market provided fresh produce at a deep discount. Everything was delivered (through the April snow) by Don Colbert and George Sohm. Thank you, all, and a special thanks to those of you who donated hams or money to fund our Easter projects. Share A Morsel: Let's show our Easter Spirit by overflowing the S.A.M. baskets during this Easter Season.

Campus Ministry High school juniors and seniors are invited to meet campus ministers from colleges throughout Michigan at open houses at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit on May 4 and 5. Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal enable the Arch-diocese of Detroit to reach out to young adults on campuses through the Office for Young Adult and Campus Ministry. Campus ministry helps college students further their spiritual growth, such as through one-on-one pastoral counseling, spir-itual direction, social justice projects, and retreats. Students not in Catholic high schools are encouraged to attend the Sunday, May 4, session from 4 to 7 p.m. A session for students in Catholic high schools will be held on Monday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information about CSA-funded ministries, pro-grams, and services, please go to www.AOD.org.

Priestly Vocations
May 11, World Day of Prayer for Vocations Jesus said “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” John 20:21. Is Jesus inviting you to be sent out to pro-claim the Gospel as a priest? Contact Fr. Tim Birney, Director of Priestly Vocations or visit our website for more information about the priesthood and World Day of Prayer for Vocations: www.detroitpriest.com. Follow us on Facebook: Office of Priestly Vocations or Twitter @DetroitPriest. Vocations, one of the seven mission priorities for the Archdiocese of Detroit Young Faith Activators of Christ’s Teachings (YFACT) - In November, 2009, a plan was initiated by the City of God Committee ( A networking group of Youth Ministers from the city parishes) the plan included the formation of representatives, both youth and adults. The teen leaders decided to call themselves YFACT, Youth Faith Activators of Christ’s Teachings. The main thrust of the group is evangelization and leadership develop-ment. The project is a collaborative effort of Youth Minis-try and Black Catholic Ministry from the Archdiocese of Detroit. The YFACT group was established as an effort to assist urban parishes by providing guidance and coordi-nation for larger urban ministry events always with the intention of those programs leading the youth back to their parishes for follow-up. Calendar of Events for YFACT: • May 17—Youth Track for the Black Women’s Confer-
