The last two weeks we have had the opportunity to celebrate the achievement of different groups within our community.

Last Thursday evening a group of SSO, Ancillary and Admin staff attended a function at the Adelaide Zoo. This event was hosted by the Prescott Schools Director of Education, Mr Steve Cowley and was an opportunity to acknowledge the work of this amazing group of people within Prescott Schools. We enjoyed canapes and drinks while watching some of the animals at dusk. One of the highlights of the evening was staff receiving their Years of Service Award. Mrs Donna Palmer, Mrs Trish Dunlop, Mrs Julie Miles and Mr Mike Brennan are SSO staff who have been a part of Prescott Southern for more than 20 years. I would also like to say a big thank you to this group who make a big impact on the lives of our students.

Last night we had the graduation of our Year 12 Class of 2019. While the weather was warm, the program ran smoothly with us appreciating the opportunity to be in air conditioning at the Stamford Grand at Glenelg!! The Year 12 students will attend the school for one last program - Secondary School Awards Night in Week 9. This will give an opportunity for the younger students to acknowledge the achievements of the group and celebrate their graduation. We look forward to your support of this program.

Next Wednesday, November 27, is our ADRA Fair Day from 1-2pm. This is a great whole school event where various stalls are set up for the purpose of fundraising for ADRA. Students have the opportunity to buy a range of items and contribute to the collection of funds for our next group of Year 11 & 12 students who will do a service project overseas. In Closing

Service to others makes a difference for our students as they learn the importance of giving without expecting something in return. Primary Sports DayThe Primary School held their annual Sports Day on Wednesday 30th October at SANTOS stadium. Despite the hot weather we got through the Athletics events in the morning. The student’s had a great time participating in their events, which included; Sprints, Long Distance run, Long Jump, Ball Throw and novelty relays. The Year 6 students also participated in Shot-put and Discus.

The heat meant we had to finish the day early and we all headed back to school after the pre-school race and Parent vs Staff vs Students relay. The Staff concede defeat for not playing by the rules so the win goes to the students! The marathon was run at school on the high school on the following Wednesday.

The points have been tallied and our winning house this year was FLINDERS!

A big thank you to our Parent Volunteers for timing the running races, it would be impossible for us to run these events without your support. Thank you also to those parents that stepped in on the day to assist classroom teachers and event coordinators when needed.

Circus of Life Show

On Monday this week, primary students had an incursion with the message of when is it being okay to have an opinion and to have a good laugh but when does laughing at someone become bullying. The powerful messages about resilience and standing up to bullies was woven throughout the act. Here are some comments about the show from students:

On Monday 18th of November we had an incursion about the Circus of Life. At the beginning Linda, the girl who performed, did some juggling. She dropped the juggling stick and a girl called Suzie recorded Linda and posted it on the internet. After a journey of emotions, Linda and Suzie apologised to each other and Linda showed Suzie how to do a juggling trick called 'Lego'- Naomi Carroll & Caitlyn Bruce

The Cirus of life is really really good. I really liked when the lady spun the ball on top of the other one - that was really cool!- Zeahn Baker

On Monday we had an incursion called 'The Circus of Life'. We enjoyed watching the tricks while having a laugh - Jackson Baker

Classroom 6, 7 & 8 ExcursionClassrooms 6, 7 & 8 went to the Maritime Museum in Term 3 to learn about the history of 18th century explorers. Students participated in a workshop to learn about the journeys of Matthew Flinders and Nicholas Buadin and viewed the South Australian Maritime Museum exhibits. Students used thinking and problem-solving skills while using clues, a map and tools to navigate through the museum, to replicate the skills, and attributes that make a successful explorer. One of our favourite activities was exploring the Ketch and experiencing what it would have been like to sail on seas on one of these boats. Afterwards, we climbed the historic lighthouse for a bird’s eye view of the Port River.

Student comments: The Maritime museum was a very fun excursion! We got to see inside boats and cabins from the olden days. There was lots of games and different scents from the explorer times you could smell like coffee. We got to unlock treasure boxes and find lots of clues. We really enjoyed it and had lots of fun! - Emma & Anna

I enjoyed learning about all the cool things in the past like how Mathew Flinders explored Australia. I also found out that my Great Grandfather travelled here from England on a boat. - Aurora Templer.

My favourite thing was going on the big ship where some prisoners were kept. I loved learning about Matthew Flinders. - Olivia O’Neill

I liked playing games and going inside of the ship. I loved climbing to the very top of the lighthouse because I could see over the water. I think going to the Maritime Museum was a good idea. - Evie Correll

I loved when we saw fake rats along the side of the boat and sliding down the wooden walls at the bottom of the ship. It was very fun when I got to lay down on the beds. They were really uncomfortable. It was funny to see how small the rooms were. - Casey

At the museum there was a replica of a boat. There was an old clown ball game. It was so much fun. Class 8, 6 & 7 went on the boat. - Liam

FROM THE PRIMARY SCHOOLClassroom 5This semester, in English, we have been working on some projects in the classroom. We worked hard to write narratives that taught kindness and are planning to share these with some reception students soon. We also all planned, practised and performed the drama ‘Lightning Larry’ for Classroom 12. Zing! We have been really enjoying reading together and applying our language skills to real life. Here are some photos from book week to celebrate language!

Classroom 9This year we have been involved in different Technology projects which we’ve integrated into our HASS program. Our HASS lessons enabled us to research the information in order to design, create and make our own inventions. In Term 1 we designed Opera Houses and we looked at specific architects. In Term 2 we created dioramas showcasing special events celebrated around the world. In Term 3 we designed improved versions of the mobile phone and researched other inventions particularly from Adelaide like the Hills Hoist, properties of penicillin and the military tank. In term 4 we will be looking at food technology. Here are some of our mobile phone designs.

Room 10This term Classroom 10 has been studying Haiku and Tanka Poetry. We learnt that both have rules.

The haiku rules are that it only has three lines. In addition, the lines should follow a pattern of syllables: 5-7-5. Finally we learnt that haiku are often about nature or the seasons.

The Tanka poem also originates from Japan. We learnt that it is very similar to the structure and organisation of haiku, but that it has two additional lines (each with seven syllables). In total, the tanka poem has thirty one syllables and although it can rhyme, it does not have to.

Smart StartAbout MoneyOver the past month, classes from Year 7 to Year 11 have had the opportunity to learn some important things about money. The Smart Start program is sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank and has been run this term as a part of the maths program. Topics were selected for the various year levels from the following: Smart Earning, Smart Choices, Smart Spending, Smart Saving, and Smart Investing.

Art CurriculumThis semester in Art students had fun experimenting with new mediums, techniques, and processes. Year 10 students made a mess as they explored making paper mache sculptures. Using nothing but newspaper, tape and glue, students made realistic sculptures of animals. They continued to develop and refine their painting skills to beautifully decorate their sculptures. Year 9 students balanced positive and negative space as they designed and created notans which included symbols of things they love. Year 7 students have just started painting for the first time in secondary school. After learning more about colour theory students have began painting colourful compositions of dripping paint. The results are going to be amazing. Miss Agardi.
