You can’t direct the wind, so reset the sails Nick Taylor Senior Managing Director, International Retail, Gordon brothersIn rough seas and strong headwinds you have to reset your sails quickly, keep a careful hand on the tiller and chart a careful course. Smart retailers across the Globe are tearing up the 5-year plan and readapting their strategy to the New Normal; but what is the New Normal? The biggest challenge for retailers is not knowing what Covid-induced trends are here to stay; how ‘Sticky’ are they? Because, as a certain Mr Darwin once said “…the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself”.

We are about connectivity, inclusion and supporting our market and community. TMA is committed to promoting the benefits that the turnaround industry has to offer the Australian business community and to facilitating a deeper restructuring market in Australia and fostering a turnaround culture. TMA is a non-profit association. Its local membership includes major trading banks, investment banks, private equity firms, hedge funds, finance, law, accounting & management consulting firms, together with chief restructuring officers; principally those who are actively engaged in financial and operational restructuring or provide ancillary professional advice.

The TMA’s major sponsors and/or board members include executives of Allegro Funds, Scottish Pacific, Ashurst, Clayton Utz, Corrs Chambers Westgarth, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, King & Wood Mallesons, Fortress Investment Group, McGrathNicol, Herbert Smith Freehills, Faraday Associates, Baker & McKenzie, KordaMentha, KPMG, BDO, Allens, Houlihan Lokey, RCubed Group, Moelis Australia and Arnold Bloch Leibler.

TMA’s commercial objective is to encourage and educate Board members and proprietors of distressed and underperforming companies to seek the support of TMA member organisations early, before the business is at risk of insolvency. TMA concurrently targets businesses that are shifting from maturity phase with growth ambitions; a point of the business life cycle when stakeholders would not typically be aware that restructuring initiatives must be pursued to ensure continued viability and business momentum.

We advocate early intervention to promote increased optionality for business and its incumbent stakeholders. This has significant consequential flow-on effects for business, including job preservation, economic stimulation, and wider community engagement.

Against the volatile global economic backdrop and the present flux experienced within the broader Australian marketplace, Boards, Financiers and Shareholders are increasingly recognising and embracing dedicated turnaround professionals to advise and restructure challenged businesses and business models.

TMA is committed to supporting the Australian community, from working with companies to implement turnaround plans, to working with regulators to propose broader policy and reform initiatives and through our support of our community partner Foodbank.
