Blended learning Akoranga whakauruuru

Our blended learning approach combines online with face-to-face block courses. It is flexible and means that you can study from anywhere in New Zealand.

You will study online using the latest pedagogical approaches and techniques. You will engage in learning online with lecturers and other students as well as at the face-to-face block courses in one of our 11 regional bases. These usually take place a couple of times a semester.

Our lecturers will support, guide and empower you throughout your programme. Other students will also play a supportive role in your success.

Online learningAkoranga ā ipurangi

Some of our programmes are fully online, which means that you are able to study from home with no commitment to attending face-to-face block courses. Your study will be self-directed, but you will engage with lecturers and other students through your online study portal.

Field-based learningAkoranga-a-whare

Many of our programmes have field-based study requirements, which means that you need to be working or volunteering in an early childhood setting for a minimum of 12 hours per week. This requirement enables you to study and work at the same time and immediately put what you learn into practice in an ECE environment.

Via-Deolorosa Moa Totogata Tugaga, Bachelor of Teaching (ECE)

I hadn’t studied for a few years but Te Rito Maioha made it really easy to get started and really helped me.

I learned so much with my study which has helped me with my work. I am now able to identify children who have different styles of learning, and have strategies to help those children. Te Rito Maioha is really culturally aware which is important to me because I am Samoan. They encouraged me to bring my cultural perspective and upbringing into my practice.

Yes – balancing work and study was really hard, but I actually really enjoyed it. Having an online support network of other teachers that I could contact for help when I needed it was great.

Living in New Plymouth with no university nearby, Te Rito Maioha was a great option for me.

Studying with Te Rito Maioha was amazing and I highly recommend them. They have great knowledge and an awesome bicultural aspect.

Combining hands-on experience with study is a dream combination. It cements what you learn. I’d do the theory throughout the week, then I’d go to my centre where I was able to put the theory into practice straight away.

I have found studying with Te Rito Maioha really good. The course is very manageable, and the tutors are very friendly and helpful.

The course has totally changed the way I teach. My philosophy of teaching is richer, and I have a much clearer understanding of the way that children learn and how Montessori teachers can best facilitate this learning.

There are usually two intakes a year in February and July, and the programme must be completed within a year.

The four modules are offered in the sequence below but can be completed out of sequence within 1 year of starting although students can go on hold for up to 1 year.

There is no set weekly early childhood service attendance requirement for this programme, but spending some time in a centre is recommended, especially if you have not worked as a teacher recently.

Admission requirementsNgā hiahiatanga tono

The TER programme is designed for two groups:

Provisionally certificated teachers who want to apply for another provisional practising certificate 6 years or more after becoming registered. The programme will assist those who have limited or no teaching experience since completing their initial teacher education qualification to become up to date on current education initiatives and ensure they are well prepared to teach successfully.

Teachers who completed their initial teacher education qualification 6 years ago or more and are applying to become registered. Qualified but non-practising teachers are likely to have minimal teaching experience within the compulsory education system since they completed their qualification. This is because, for most teaching positions in New Zealand, it is a requirement to have a current practising certificate.

If you have questions or want to discuss your individual situation, please email [email protected].

All applicants must undergo a children’s worker safety check as required under the Vulnerable Children Act 2014.

Programme structureTe whakatakototanga o te hōtaka

Practicum-based option Teachers not currently employed in a full-time teaching position in an ECE service will be required to complete a four-week practicum in a centre
