President’s Welcome Michelle Trame 2019-2020 MASFAA President

Dear MASFAA Colleagues:

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the “Month of MASFAA”, our version of the 2020 Midwest Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators annual conference.

The conference planning committees worked tirelessly throughout this past year, initially developing an excellent conference agenda that we planned to offer to you in person in Dearborn Michigan. When it became clear that we needed to move to a virtual conference format, they quickly switched gears and transitioned to the “Month of MASFAA.” Sue Swisher, Betsy Johnson and our entire conference program committee have developed sessions that feature timely subjects, inspiring speakers, and outstanding interest sessions. Cori Spain has created the technological infrastructure so that anyone in your office can participate in the sessions remotely. Please join me in saying “thank you” to the many people who have made this conference and these sessions possible.

This past year has been more challenging than many of us could have ever imagined. We moved our offices entirely online within a matter of days, we implemented the Federal CARES Act while guidance changed multiple times, all while continuing to serve our students. During the coming days and weeks, I hope that you find some time to relax and celebrate your accomplishments. I hope that you enjoy the sessions being offered. Please take a few minutes to reach out and say goodbye to our retirees who are listed in the program and congratulate our colleagues who are being recognized for their many years of service.

Enjoy the virtual conference and I look forward to seeing you next year in Milwaukee!

Presenter: Chris Wise, University of Chicago

As financial aid professionals, most of our time is spent in the black-and-white world of rules, regulations and answers. We sometimes forget about the person sitting in front of us. Student development theory gives us lenses though which we can better understand the gray area in which students exist and recognize ways we can help them move forward in their development. This session is about moving out from under the warm blanket of rules and regulations and asking the audience to consider how their interactions can serve to advance the overall development of the student. I will introduce three foundational theories of student development and look at ways they might influence our practice.
