Born to BelongThe theme for this year’s International Gathering is “Born to Belong”.

As human beings, we are wired to connect. The sense that we belong somewhere and with someone is so important in helping us understand that we have value and to enable us to form healthy relationships.

The historical displacement and subsequent disconnection for the First Nations and Indigenous peoples from their culture, language and land has resulted in many of them growing up not knowing where or to whom they belong.

So many children continue to grow up lonely and isolated, as many of their parents before them. This has contributed to generation after generation of trauma and over-representation in every system; whether that is justice, health or child protection.

We also know that when any family, Indigenous or not, enters the child protection or child welfare systems, there is very often a similar sense of disconnect and feelings of not belonging.

The evidence of these missing, eroded or damaged relationships is in the grief, loss and pain we see in the families we work with every day. Understanding the role of a family’s naturally connected network can help serve as a powerful foundation for our work.

With the knowledge that “Safety without healing is temporary” and “Healing happens in the network”, Signs of Safety aims to put children, and those the children belong to, at the centre of the assessment, decision-making and planning work so that they are given every opportunity to belong.

Because we are all Born to Belong.

We are excited to announce that the

13th International Signs of Safety

Gathering will be held in Calgary,

Canada, co-hosted by

Alberta Children’s Services.

Join us to hear presentations from child protection

practitioners and leaders from around the globe. This

Gathering will also feature presentations from many

Canadian practitioners working in Alberta Children’s

Services who, with their leaders, will describe their use of

the Signs of Safety in the implementation of

the approach.

Calgary is a city that is rich with beautiful landscapes,

celebrate good child protection practice through

presentations from practitioners and from leaders who are

supporting them.

Featuring presentations from:

• Leading international Signs of Safety practitioners

and agencies

• Alberta Children’s Services child protection

professionals presenting their work from their

implementation

• Senior leaders sharing their experiences, reflections

and strategies for system-wide implementation

Practice-focusedSpread over Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, there are

approximately 30 presentation slots for agencies and

practitioners that will focus primarily on front-line practice.

Other topics will include implementation experiences and

strategies and results of the latest research on Signs of

Safety that has been undertaken.

Signs of Safety Leaders’ Day Forging organisations that support the practice.

Practictioners have been contributing to the evolution of

the Signs of Safety approach for over 25 years. While the

approach makes sense to social workers and they want to

use it, the biggest challenge to actually applying the Signs

of Safety in practice lies in transforming the compliance

driven culture and operations of their child protection

organisations to align with participatory practice.

This is simple to say but so very hard to achieve.

Organisational change depends on determined, courageous

and intelligent whole system leadership.

Over the past 12 years, large scale implementations of the

Signs of Safety have been undertaken across the world.

Working together with these agencies and their leaders

we have distilled the lessons of this international effort

into a clear, whole system framework for organisational

implementation.

In this Leaders’ Day, presenters will share their experience

in Signs of Safety implementation.

This will be a unique learning opportunity for children’s

services leaders to come together in Calgary with

international colleagues to share experiences and draw

inspiration from the presenters to strengthen our efforts to

forge organisations that can support participatory Signs of

Safety practice.

Dinner/Dance PartyFeedback from previous Gatherings tells us that

some of the best learning happens through the

conversations and connections that are made around

the formal program, and so we will continue the

tradition of having a party at the venue on the Tuesday

evening (starting 7:00pm) with dinner and live music.

This event has been a real highlight of past Gatherings

and will include a fabulous band who are guaranteed

to get us up dancing.

Places to this event are limited, so we recommend

booking early. This can be done as an option when

booking for the Gathering.
