I will sing to the Lord who has been bountiful with me. FIRST READING: Leviticus 19:1-2,17-18. RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 103. RESPONSE: The Lord is compassionate and gracious. 1. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all within me, his holy name Bless the Lord, O my soul, and never forget all his benefits. 2. It is the Lord who forgives all your sins, who heals every one of your ills, who redeems your life from the grave, who crowns you with mercy and compassion. 3. He does not treat us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our faults. 4.As far as the east is from the west, so far from us does he remove our transgressions. Vocation and Discernment “It is better to seek out that calm and quiet that enables you to reflect, pray, look more clearly at the world around you, and then, with Jesus, come to recognise the vocation that is yours in this world” – Pope Francis. P OPE Francis brings his Exhortation on Youth (Christ is Alive!) to a conclusion with two short chapters on Vocation (chapter 8) and Discernment (chapter 9). Catholic thinking about vocation rests on the universal call (vocation) to holiness, rooted in our baptism. We are all called into existence and through baptism we are called to be part of a love story. Every Christian is called into a relationship of close friendship with Christ; it is relationship which blends our life with the life of Jesus. Pope Francis likes to remind everyone that we are not just called to be, but to be for others. This means that each person is a mission. To discover one’s vocation or calling is to discover “why I was made, why I am here on earth, and what the Lord’s plan is for my life”. Most people discover that they are called to share their life in love with one other person in the making of a family. United in a covenant of love which we call matrimony, most people find that marriage and family life fits them perfectly. The Pope refers us to his other Exhortation, The Joy of Love, for a fuller reflection on marriage and family life. Again, most people are also called to work! In the Church’s view, work is (or should be) an expression of human dignity: “It is part of the meaning of life on this earth”. Unfortunately, in many places people have to face mass unemployment or degrading working conditions; this situation can have a demoralising effect on young people. In reflecting on the various callings open to people today, the Pope says: “Do not dismiss the possibility of devoting yourself to God in the priesthood, the religious life or in other forms of consecration”. Some people find that they flourish best in the single state and that becomes their vocation. All discernment of one’s calling requires some level of interior silence: “It is better to seek out that calm and quiet that enables you to reflect, pray, look more clearly at the world around you, and then, with Jesus, come to recognise the vocation that is yours in this world”. In Chapter 9 Pope Francis takes the question of discernment to a deeper level. He identifies stages of authentic discernment. The formation of a mature conscience is a basic necessity for making an adult and responsible decision about a way of life. Then one really needs some solitude and silence to focus carefully on what the Spirit of God is saying to us. Listening to others, friends and mentors is useful. We need to be able to recognise grace where it is at work in our lives and what is really driving us. Most of all we need to be unafraid of asking questions. Pope Francis urges us not just to ask: “Who am I?” but to go deeper and ask: “Who am I for others? ”. This is a wise question, not just when deciding on a calling but for the whole of our lives. Vocation and Discernment

“It is better to seek out that calm and quiet that enables you to reflect, pray, look more clearly at the world around you, and then, with Jesus, come to recognise the vocation that is yours in this world” – Pope Francis.

POPE Francis brings his Exhortation on Youth (Christ is Alive!) to a conclusion with two short chapters on Vocation (chapter 8) and

Discernment (chapter 9).Catholic thinking

about vocation rests on the universal call (vocation) to hol iness , rooted in our bapt i sm . We are all called into existence and through baptism we are called to be part of a love story. Every Christian is called into a relationship of close friendship with Christ ; i t is relationship which blends our life with the life of Jesus.

Pope Francis likes to remind everyone that we are not just called to be, but to be for others. This means that each person is a mission. To discover one’s vocation or calling is to discover “why I was made, why I am here on earth, and what the Lord’s plan is for my life”.

United in a covenant of love which we call matrimony, most people find that marriage and family life fits them perfectly. The Pope refers us to his other Exhortation, The Joy of Love, for a fuller reflection on marriage and family life.

Again, most people are also called to work! In the Church’s view, work is (or should be) an expression of human dignity: “It is part of the meaning of life on this earth”. Unfortunately, in many places people have to face mass unemployment or degrading working conditions;

this situation can have a demoralising effect on young people.

In reflecting on the various callings open to people today, the Pope says: “Do not dismiss

the possibility of devoting yourself to God in the priesthood, the religious l i fe or in other forms of consecration”. Some people find that they f lourish best in the single s t a te and tha t becomes the i r vocation.

All discernment of one’s cal l ing requ i res some level of interior silence: “It is better

to seek out that calm and quiet that enables you to reflect, pray, look more clearly at the world around you, and then, with Jesus, come to recognise the vocation that is yours in this world”.

In Chapter 9 Pope Francis takes the question of discernment to a deeper level. He identifies stages of authentic discernment. The formation of a mature conscience is a basic necessity for making an adult and responsible decision about a way of life. Portuguese, Italian, or other nationality, make your culture’s traditional shrove
