The 2018-19 season willgo down as a season ofchange and transition for

the Thief River Falls girlsbasketball team. Following the 2017-18,

Jeff Loe stepped down after22 seasons as the program’shead coach. The 2017-18season also marked the endof an era, with the gradua-tion of seven seniors, includ-ing Tiahna Nicholson andKylea Praska, who played onstate tournament teams in

2015 and 2016. Filling the vacancy creat-ed by the coaching retire-ment of Jeff Loe is first yearhead coach Brian Loe, whohas 11 combined years ofexperience as an assistantcoach at Gilbert,Goodridge/Grygla and ThiefRiver Falls. Through its first 11games, the Thief River Fallsgirls basketball team had arecord of 2-9. Both wins wereby 26 or more points, while afew of the losses have beennail biters that got awayfrom the Prowlers. “As far as our record goes,we had higher expectationsfor ourselves at this point inthe season,” Brian Loe said.“However, we also knew itwas going to be very difficultgraduating as much experi-ence as we did, and playingthe type of schedule that wehave so far.” Loe said the team’sresiliency has been itsbiggest strength so far. “We have lost a couple ofclose games and a few not soclose, but the girls do not letit affect them,” Loe said.“They continue to have a

positive attitude, work hardevery day in practice, andenjoy being around eachother. Having that attitudeand mindset is going toallow them to continue toimprove and give ourselves achance to win some gamesdown the stretch.” Loe would also like theProwlers to take bettershots, especially in thepaint. “Our field goal percentageis not where we need it to bein order to compete with theteams we play,” Loe said.“We also need to take bettercare of the ball. We are aver-aging about 21 turnovers pergame and we would like thatto be closer to 12-14 a game.” Alexa Rogalla leads theteam in scoring, steals andassists, with 14.5 points, 2.6steals and 1.7 assists percontest through the season’sfirst month. Rounding out the topthree in scoring for theProwlers are Becca Leier at7.1 points per game and AniDalager at 6.7 points pergame. Olivia Hawkins has beenthe team’s top rebounder

with 7.0 per game. AniDalager and Becca Leierhave also shown hustle onthe glass with 6.8 and 6.1rebounds per game, respec-tively. Camryn Schwab andDalager are the onlyProwlers shooting over 70percent from the free throwline, with Schwab shooting78 percent and Dalager at 72percent. Seniors Rogalla, Leier, and Hailey Rosendahl arethe captains of the 2018-19squad. “They are very importantto our team as they havebeen great examples of whatit means to be a captain anda leader,” Loe said. “Theywork very hard, are great inthe classroom, and are highcharacter kids. I was fortu-nate to coach them my firstyear in the program in 2015when they were freshman,so it is really cool to be ableto coach them again as sen-iors in my first varsity sea-son. They are a joy to coach, and the program will missthem next year.” The roster also includes astrong junior class withseven players. Loe said BreaPrickett and Annika Dalagerare emerging as leadersfrom that class. Defending state runner-up Roseau was the sectionfavorite heading into theseason and a month laterthat is still the case with theRams posting an 8-2 start. “The north half of Section8 is very tough,” Loe said.“Right now, Roseau is at thetop, followed by Hawley,East Grand Forks,Crookston and Dillworth-Glyndon-Felton. We are inthe six-spot, ahead of Bagley, and Warroad. However, wefeel like anyone has a chanceon any given night in oursection. There is likely to bea lot of movement through-out the rest of the year as faras rankings go, and it will bevery fun to see how thingsplay out at the end of theyear.”

The Thief River Fallsboys basketball team defeat-ed the Northern Freeze 62-59 on Dec. 28. In the grandscheme of things, it was aninsignificant win by a AAteam over a single A team.

But it was also a small mile-stone of sorts because it wasthe Prowlers’ third win ofthe 2018-19 season. Last year, the teamdropped its first 17 games enroute to a 2-25 season. Aftersix seasons at the helm,Head Coach Joe Wasfaretstepped down following theseason. Longtime Badger/Greenbush-Middle Rivergirls coach Jon Hams washired to take Wasfaret’sspot. Hams has worked in theThief River Falls SchoolDistrict since fall 2015. Hebrings 20 years of basketballcoaching experience to theProwlers, including eightyears as a head coach andnine years as an assistantcoach for Badger/Greenbush-Middle River, and three years of juniorhigh coaching in theMountain Iron-Buhl School

District. Hams likes his team’seffort and eagerness toimprove early in the 2018-19campaign. “These guys give it,” saidHams. “It doesn’t alwayswork out the way that theywant it to work out, but theyare still coming in and doingwork every day. The honesttruth, is that I see us grow-ing and maturing as a team. Hams is pleased with theleadership of his four of hisseniors, Luke Perkovich,Myles Johnson, ZachKoestner and Zach Myhrer. “We have a good group ofseniors,” Hams said. “LukePerkovich, who fills a goodrole inside; Myles [Johnson],who plays a nice leadershiprole and does a lot of goodthings that don’t show up inthe stat book – we usuallygive him the hardest defen-sive assignment on guardsor wings; Zach Koestner,

same thing, he doesn’t do alot of things that people seeon the stat sheet, but he’shustling all the time; andZach Myhrer comes off thebench to fill some of thoseshort small minutes weneed.” The Prowlers are also get-ting big contributions fromtheir underclassmen. “Storm Manning, he’s anoffensive force right now tobe reckoned with,” Hamssaid. He noted that Manningscored 23 points againstNorman County East/Ulen-Hitterdahl in a game whereit felt like he was a non-fac-tor. “You have to come outand respect him offensively.” Hams also highlightedthe role of Gunner Zutz. “Hegoes out and plays harddefense,” Hams said. “Whenhe channels that energy anddirects it in the right way, hedoes a lot of great stuff.” Brevyn Lingen is a full-

time starter as a sophomoreafter making periodic startsas a freshman. “His dad and I are on himto do more because we thinkhe’s capable of doing more,”Hams said. “He’s a solidpoint guard.” Hams also highlightedthe play of Zach Praska, whocomes off the bench. “Right now, one of ourbiggest strengths is that wecan come in and hangaround with good teams,”Hams said. “Now that’s astrength for us, but we needto keep getting strongerthere. While the Prowlers have

shown an ability to hangaround good teams forstretches of games, theirundoing in losses has typi-cally come from extendedscoring droughts. “Our biggest weaknessright now is scoring,” Hamssaid. “We have some guyswho can score in bunches. We need consistency scoring.Right now, Storm is averag-ing about 20 points. We needconsistency with Lingen indouble digits and Luke[Perkovich] in double digits, and we need the other guysto fill in around five or sixpoints each.”

Girls hockey team embraces underdog role in loaded section The Thief River Fallsgirls hockey team won eightof its last 10 games headinginto the Christmas break topost an overall record of 12-

4. “I think the girls havedone a great job thus far, they are slowly and steadilyimproving every time westep on the ice,” said secondyear head coach BrettJohnson. “They have a greatwork ethic and are willing todo what it takes to take theirgame to the next level. The Prowlers are rankedsixth in the latest Class ALet’s Play Hockey poll, twospots ahead of section rivalEast Grand Forks who sitsin the number eight spotwith a record of 8-4-2. TheGreen Wave edged theProwlers 2-1 in the teams’only meeting so far in 2018-19, with a rematch slated forJan. 22 in Thief River Falls. Both East Grand Forks

and Thief River Falls findthemselves looking up atdefending Section 8A cham-pion and state runner-upWarroad. The Warriorsentered the holiday breakwith a perfect 16-0 recordand number one spot in theClass A rankings. TheProwlers fell 3-1 in theirfirst match-up with theWarriors this season. Theteams meet again Jan. 17. Johnson lists his team’swillingness to learn andunderstand the game at ahigher level as its greateststrength. “Still not where Iwant them to be but they arelearning and improvingevery day,” he added. To contend for a sectiontitle, the Prowlers need tofind a way to score moregoals. “If we want to contendwith the better teams in thestate, we will need to find away to get the puck to thenet and battle for therebounds,” Johnson said. Senior leadership is typi-cally a key ingredient in asuccessful program and the2018-19 Prowlers have noshortage of senior leadershipwith goalie Faith Porter, who attends classes atWarren-Alvarado-Oslo HighSchool and commutes toThief River Falls for prac-tice; forwards MarrynDalager, HannahMagnusson and DakotaKlosterman; and managerKatelyn Sorter, all playingimportant roles. “Faith has stepped up forthe Prowlers the last twoyears playing in 21 gamesand posting a record of 15-5-1 with 8 shutouts in those 21games,” Johnson said. “She

is a technical goalie whorelies on her angles and con-trolling her rebounds. “Marryn Dalager playsforward and is a spark plugfor the team. The energy andrelentlessness she shows onthe ice, shift in and shift out,is respectful and a lot oftimes goes unrewarded, butshe continues to give herbest effort every time shesteps on the ice. “Hannah Magnussonplays forward and is one Ican rely on. She shows up ontime (early), works hard, ispositive and honest withherself and her teammates. She is disciplined and playsthe game hard. “Dakota Klosterman alsoplays forward and has donea great job of playing herposition and doing her job sofar this season. “Katelyn Sorter has beenone of our managers for thelast two seasons, and sheworks just as hard as therest of them. Always earlyand willing and ready tohelp in anyway she can.” The Prowlers have alsogotten big contributionsfrom junior Khloe Lund, whois a team captain along withDalager and Magnusson, and sophomore Shelby

Breiland, who attends class-es in the Red Lake FallsSchool District and com-mutes to Thief River Fallsfor practice. Through the first 16games, Lund led the team inassists with 15 and trailedonly Breiland in goals scoredwith nine, and total pointswith 24. Breiland, meanwhile, leads the Prowlers in goalsscored, 19, points, 27, and issecond in assists with eight. “Shelby has a knack for

putting the puck in the net,”Johnson said. “She is a veryskilled player who skatesvery well, can stickhandleand shoot as well.” Magnusson is currentlythird on the team in two cat-egories with six goals and 11total points. Thief River Falls is alsofortunate to have a pair ofstrong goalies protecting thenet. Porter is 7-2 with a .932save percentage, while soph-omore Gabriella Steele is 5-2with a .917 save percentage.

The Thief River Fallswrestling team is off to asolid 8-2 start with both ofits losses coming to Section8AA favorite Perham. The 2019 Prowlers are aconsensus top-four team inthe section, joining 2018runner-up Detroit Lakes,Pierz and section-favoritePerham. The team could be ThiefRiver Falls’ best team since2011, when the Prowlers

won their second consecu-tive section championshipand third in a five-yearspan. In consecutive weeksto start the 2018-19 season,Thief River Falls finishedfirst at the Wadena-DeerCreek WolverineInvitational, took second atthe Grand Forks Sertomadual tournament and tookthird in the 39-team BigBear Tournament at CassLake-Bena High School. “We have some great lead-ership with Cade Lundeenand Jake Davis, and it hasbeen infectious with theyounger guys like Wienenand Kasprick and GriffinLundeen,” said Head CoachKenny Geiser. “We need toget a little better at break-downs and not giving up legattacks. Overall our aggres-sion is very good and ourguys are buying in to thesystem of attacking andbeing in good shape. Hardwork seems to be paying off.” As good as the Prowlershave looked in the earlygoing, the Yellowjacketshave looked even better asthey seek their fifth consecu-tive section title. Perhamdefeated Thief River Falls42-15 in the regular season

dual and 56-12 in theSertoma championshipmatch earlier this season. The Yellowjackets have beenranked as high as fourth thisseason. Individually, the Prowlersare leaning on the experi-ence of returning state qual-ifiers Lundeen, Davis andBrenan Peralta, and experi-enced veterans Kasprick,Wienen and Cole Johnson. “Cade [Lundeen] has hada dominating season so farand is working very hardtoward his goals,” Geisersaid. “Jake Davis has beenawesome to watch this year. His aggression from his feetis impressive. BradyKasprick has been wrestlingvery well. For a young guy,he has very advanced tech-nical skill. Cole Johnson hashad a great start. He is soathletic and he's putting ittogether on the mat. CodyWienen has picked up wherehe left off last year. His men-tal toughness is what makeshim so hard to beat.” Lundeen and Peralta aretwo of five seniors who havebecome fixtures in theProwler lineup. Joiningthem are Kyle Miller, CodySele and Kevin Jensen.

“These guys have beentogether for a long time andthey mean a lot to Prowlerwrestling,” Geiser said. “Ihope they can finish theircareers strong and help theteam reach its goals.” Juniors who have madevarsity appearances includeDavis, Johnson, AaronBruggeman and AlexLancto. TRF boys swimming team continues to build With a roster thatincludes only three seniors, the 2018-19 Thief RiverFalls boys swimming teamwas expected to experiencethe growing pains that comewith an experienced roster. But, that hasn’t exactly been

the case a month into theseason. “Our team is smaller andyounger this year than wehave been, so this year’sfocus has been primarily onbuilding our technique andsetting time goals,” saidfourth year head coachDanielle Spiten. “With thatsaid, the team this year hasbeen surprising me over andover again with their tenaci-ty and how often they canstep up to the plate andmeet a challenge.” Senior leaders on the2018-19 team are Alec Arch,Paul Wiggs and AndrewBrang. “We have a lot of 8thgraders on our team andeach of those younger kidslook up to our seniors forguidance and to set anexample,” Spiten said. Brang and Wiggs arejoined by Alex Zerwas asteam captains. “Just like the seniors, ourcaptains are the main lead-

ers of our team,” Spiten said.“I expect them to be, regard-less of talent, our hardestworkers and most responsi-ble athletes.” As a team, the Prowlershave shown steady improve-ment in their variousfreestyle events, with sever-al dominant performances inthe 50 freestyle. “We have several swim-mers, including new onesthis year, who have becomevery competitive in the 50free,” Spiten said. “With AlexZerwas and Alec Arch bothgetting under 26 seconds inthe 50 free, they have thepotential to be very competi-tive this year.” In addition to the 50, Archwill be swimming the 100freestyle. Spiten said he isworking hard to improve hisendurance and breathingpatterns to be competitive atthe section meet. Along with the 50 free,Zerwas also swims the 100butterfly.

“He and Alec both pusheach other, and it has madethem much better swim-mers,” Spiten said. Wiggs is the team’s mostexperienced and accom-plished distance swimmer. His main event is the 500freestyle and his main goalthis season is to place top 16at the section meet, and he’llneed to drop his times toaccomplish the goal, accord-ing to Spiten. “He approaches eachpractice as an opportunity toincrease his endurance andgive himself a greaterchance at making the top16,” she said. Two races that have beena struggle this year for theProwlers are the breast-stroke and 200 IM events. “We have very youngswimmers in those eventsright now, and while theyare improving, they havesome growing to do beforewe can be competitiveagainst other teams and

boys much older than them-selves,” Spiten said. “We alsoneed to work on our starts. We probably have some ofthe weaker starts in our sec-tion and it’s a very criticalpart of the race.” Heading into the postsea-son, the Prowlers are defi-nite underdogs in a loadedsection. “Our section is a very dif-ficult section and with teams

like Alexandria and Sartellleading the pack, we focuson some of the smallerteams,” Spiten said. “We hada great win against Perhamat the last meet and we hopeto keep that momentum up.We won't be able to beatsome of the bigger teams, but we can beat some oftheir athletes for personalwins.”

Northland Community &Technical College HeadWrestling Coach ScottDCamp is optimistic about

his team’s chances in thefinal two months of the2018-19 season following aroller coaster first twomonths. Optimism was high whenpractices officially beganOct. 1. The team returnednational qualifiers inHunter Roller and KyleFowler, starters JemmarioJones, Devante Ryans, ErikGerena and Rees Lehman, and supplemented that tal-ent with a 15-wrestlerrecruiting class that includ-ed high school state champi-ons in Kegan Leatherow,Ogden, Utah; CaleSchalesky, Hettinger, N.D.,and Andre Baguma, Fargo,N.D. Overall, the Pioneers had21 wrestlers on campus com-

peting for spots in the 10-weight class lineup whenschool began. Unfortunately, attrition hit the programhard early in 2018-19. The Pioneers lost twowrestlers to offseasoninjuries before fall workoutsbegan. This year, the teamhas lost wrestlers to injury. Some have chosen to retirefrom the sport to focus onschoolwork, while otherschose to leave school entire-ly. The result is a roster ofjust nine eligible wrestlerscapable of filling eight of the10 weight classes. “It was a rough semester,”admitted DCamp. “We havea core group of eightwrestlers that worked reallyhard in the first semester. They showed up at pretty

much all of the optionalworkouts and study halls. Not surprisingly, they arethe ones excelling andbecoming leaders.” Returning from the firstsemester are freshmen:Hunter Hermanson, 125pounds, West Fargo, N.D;Payton Jackson, 133, DetroitLakes; Kaven Blazek, 157,Deerwood; Tommy Scheett,165, Bismarck, N.D.; AndreBaguma, 285, Fargo, N.D.;and Marcus Goulet, 285,Belcourt, N.D.; and sopho-mores: Rees Lehman, 141,Erie, Kan.; Kyle Fowler, 149,Thief River Falls; andHunter Roller, 184, Warren. The Pioneers will be openat 174 and 197 pounds. DCamp feels that histeam can still be competitive

in the MCAC with eightwrestlers. “On the surface, only fill-ing only eight weights putsus at a disadvantage, but wefinished second in the con-ference filling eight of the 10weights each of the past twoseasons,” DCamp said. “Itsounds like other teams inour conference were also hitwith attrition this year. Theconference title is up forgrabs.” Six-time defendingMCAC champion Rochesterremains the favorite headinginto the second semester, butthey were open at both 125and 133 at the NJCAANational Duals tournamentearlier this month. Itasca, whom Northlandedged by one point in last

year’s MCAC Tournament, started the year ranked 17thin the nation. The Vikingshave been hit even harder byattrition, with just four orfive wrestlers competing inthe team’s second semesterduals so far. Both Rochester andItasca will be in Thief RiverFalls to face NorthlandWednesday, Jan. 23. Ridgewater, which fin-ished fourth in the districttournament last year, remains a relative unknown. The Pioneers are set to hostthe Warriors Thursday, Jan.17. Coach: Scott DCamp

The phrase “woulda, coul-da, shoulda” perfectly sum-marizes the first half of theNorthland men’s basketballseason in 2018-19. Through its first 14games, the Northland menare 5-9 overall and 1-2 in theconference. Of those ninelosses, two came in overtime, one of the regulation losses

was by a point, another wasby three points, and anotherwas by five points. In all fiveof those games, the Pioneerssurrendered second halfleads. That means thePioneers could hypothetical-ly be 10-4. Head Coach RickNikunen said he still tryingto figure out what his team’sstrengths are because theyseem to change from game togame. “We are so young, withonly one sophomore, and soinconsistent that it is hardto identify what ourstrengths are,” Nikunensaid. “We are working tomake our strengths, thestrengths of our past teams.” Nikunen’s successfulteams of the past excelled atplaying together, playinggood defense and sharingthe ball. “We’re far behind in someof that because they are stillfiguring out how hard theyneed to play and how toughthe competition is,” Nikunensaid. “That’s been their

biggest hurdle.” Z’Mari Minter is theteam’s only sophomore. He’sbeen a workhorse, averagingalmost 32 minutes per game, scoring more than 13 pointsper game and grabbing morethan 9 rebounds per game. “He’s got really good num-bers for us and has thatexperience,” Nikunen said.“He gets how hard you haveto play. He understandswhat it’s like and it shows inhis confidence.” Among the freshmen,Nikunen said that ChristianHorton has been the mostconsistent. “The reason he’s the mostconsistent is because he’sthe most persistent,”Nikunen said. “He workshard, he sticks with it andhe gets what we are trying todo. But, he’s a post player, sohe doesn’t have the ball inhis hands as much as guardsdo. Some games he gets lotsof touches and some gameshe doesn’t.” Leading scorers for thePioneers are Bakri Gubara,

14.5 points per game;Minter, 13.1 points pergame; Horton, 12.7 pointsper game; and IbrahimNasir, 10.0 points per game. Minter is the team’s lead-ing rebounder, with 9.3boards per game. Collin St. Julien is aver-aging five assists per gamesince joining the basketballteam at the conclusion ofNorthland’s football season.Nasir is second on the teamwith 4.4 assists per game. Horton has been impres-sive from the free throw line, hitting 84 percent of his freethrows so far on the seasonto lead the team in that cat-egory. He is the only Pioneershooting over 80 percentfrom the charity stripe, withJohn Brooks, 75 percent, and Minter, 73.3 percent, being the only other playersshooting over 70 percentfrom the foul line. Nikunen said the incon-sistent play for a team with11 freshman is expected andthe team is showing signs ofbecoming more consistent.

“I think we are going to befine,” Nikunen said “We areshowing signs the last four

or five games of getting itand knowing how hard wehave to play.”

During her nine years atthe helm of the NorthlandCommunity & TechnicalCollege women’s basketballprogram, Shannon Nelsonhas cultivated a culture ofwinning and high expecta-tions. Over the previous eightyears, Northland has quali-fied for the NJCAA DivisionIII tournament seven times, with a national champi-onship in 2014 and a runner-up finish in 2016, andRegion 13B titles in 2011,2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017and 2018. This year’s squad is build-ing a resume that lives up tothe standard set by previoustournament teams, with an

8-3 start (all three losseswere to scholarship pro-grams) and a current rank-ing of third in NJCAADivision III. Nelson, who reachedcareer win number 200 Dec.15, said she’s pleased withthe team’s performance upto this point in the season. “Early on, there arealways things to work onand there are several areaswhere we need this team toget better, but the basketballseason is a long one and ourgoal is just to get a little bet-ter each time that we step onthe floor,” Nelson said. “Weexpected to have more depththis year than we’ve had inseveral seasons, and I thinkthat has been the case. Ithas allowed us to put in afull court press and play alittle more up-tempo. Weexpected more balancedscoring this year, but themajority of our scoring stillcomes from our inside play-ers. We would like to seemore consistent scoringthreats on the perimeter.” Nelson has always been acoach that preached defenseand as the team entersMCAC Northern Divisionplay, she considers thePioneers’ defense its biggeststrength. “We are only giving up 53points per game and thatspeaks to our strengthdefensively and on the

boards,” Nelson said. “Oneother area that has been astrength to this point is free-throw shooting. We are num-ber one in the nation in freethrow percentage, shooting77.8 percent from the line. That makes us more difficultto defend because teamshave to try to contest shotswithout fouling. Our goal, now, needs to be to get to theline more often to takeadvantage of this.” While the defense andfree throw shooting havebeen solid, the Pioneers’ ballhandling has been an area ofconcern. “We turn the ball over toofrequently, and so many ofthose turnovers are due tocarelessness and poor deci-sion-making,” Nelson said.“Turnovers put pressure onus defensively because itallows the opponent to scorewith numbers in transition, rather than trying to scoreagainst our half-courtdefense, which we believe ispretty difficult to do. It alsoputs pressure on us offen-sively because we havefewer possessions to try toconvert to points. In both ofour losses so far, we havewon the category of pointsper shot. That means if wecould just limit ourturnovers and put the ballon the rim, we win thosegames.” Sophomore Brooke

Heggie, redshirt freshmanJanie Wunderlich and fresh-man Carly Mekash are cap-tains of the 2018-19Northland women’s basket-ball team and they also ledthe team in scoring andrebounding through its first10 games. Through 10 games,Mekash was the team’s lead-ing scorer with 164 points(16.4 ppg), followed byHeggie with 163 points(16.3, ppg) and Wunderlichwith 87 points (8.7 ppg). Mekash is also shootingan incredible 61.4 percentfrom the field, which cur-rently ranks fourth inNJCAA Division III women’sbasketball. Heggie is the team’s toprebounder with 109 total, followed by Mekash with 84and Wunderlich with 62. Heggie also leads theteam in blocks with 38,which ranks fifth in NJCAADivision III. Wunderlich leads theteam with 35 assists on theseason, followed by HannahDietsch with 29 and JoziHalvorson with 21. Three Pioneers are shoot-ing better than 80 percentfrom the foul line, led byMekash with 85.71 percent, followed by Mya Hough,85.71 percent and JoziHalvorson 80.95 percent. Along with Heggie andWunderlich, the Pioneers

The usual suspects are atit again in Section 8A boyshockey. Defending section cham-pion Thief River Falls is 9-4-2 15 games into the 2018-19season and ranked fifth inthe Jan. 9 Let’s Play HockeyClass A Poll, but sectionrivals East Grand Forks andWarroad are also playing

well. The Green Wave are11-3 and ranked fourth inClass A, while the Warriorsare 8-5 and ranked ninth. “Overall, I am satisfiedwith our progress at thispoint,” said Head Coach TimBergland. “We try to not put

a lot of emphasis on the winsand losses. I want toprogress and get better onthe ice. Overall we are doingthat. Trying to be consis-tent.” Bergland is pleased withthe Prowlers’ team defenseso far in 2018-19 and he ishoping for continuedimprovement on the defen-sive side. “We need to get better –not be satisfied with how weplay defensively,” Berglandsaid. He would also like toimprove its play in the offen-sive zone. “It’s not easy scoringgoals,” Bergland said. “Wehave to do the things that ittakes to get the dirty goals.” The 2018-19 rosterincludes 10 seniors in JakeHall, John Barry, HunterTabbatt, Kaleb Flaagan,Ethan Janisch, ColeGillespie, Daltyn Quam,Hunter Larson, GunnarFellman and KeadenKempert. “Every year, your seniorsare your backbone,”Bergland said. “When theyare playing hard, it’s easy foreveryone else to fall in line.” Flaagan and Larson werechosen as team captains atthe conclusion of last season.Bergland said there arealways other kids who step

up as leaders over the courseof the season as well. “I am starting to figureout who those kids are now,”Bergland said. “Hopefully bythe end of the year, they stepup in a big way.” In addition to its seniors, the Prowlers have alsoreceived big contributionsfrom varsity newcomersKaden Bakken and goal-tender Noah Rupprecht. “It’s been fun to see theprogress some of these kidshave made given the oppor-tunity,” Bergland said.“Noah Rupprecht in net hasdone a very good job taking aleadership role. KadenBakken has been a goodaddition in his energy andcompetition level.” Evan Bushy and TuckerSkime are the top goal scor-ers for the Prowlers, withBushy scoring 12 goals andSkime scoring nine so far in2018-19. Grant Hartmann isthird on the team with sevengoals. Brockston Masseth is theteam’s leader in assists with12, followed by Skime andBushy with 11 and 10,respectively. Junior Noah Rupprecht is8-3-1 with 281 saves, and asave percentage of .937 inhis first year as the varsitygoalie. Sophomore Josh

Berzinski is 1-1-1 with 68saves and a save percentageof .932. Last year, the Prowlersovercame a 2-7-2 start towin 11 of their last 14 gamesafter making a few lineupadjustments. Thief RiverFalls split with Warroad andCrookston, but were sweptin the regular season byEast Grand Forks, and wereawarded the number fourseed in the section. Thief River Falls beatLake of the Woods, Warroadand East Grand Forks inconsecutive outings to winthe section for the secondtime in three seasons. At state, the Prowlersdropped a 1-0 decision toAlexandria, before reelingoff wins over Monticello andMankato East to claim thestate consolation title. Warroad’s last sectiontitle came in 2010. Sincethen, Thief River Falls haswon section titles in 2011,2012, 2016 and 2018, withEast Grand Forks winningthe section in 2013-15 and2017. The same three teamswill vie for the title againthis year, with a couple otherteams from the section serv-ing as sleeper picks. “The usual suspects areback in the mix,” Bergland

said. “East Grand Forks,Warroad and Thief RiverFalls are the early favorites, with Crookston and DL assleepers. We need to be play-

ing our best hockey with alot of confidence coming intoFebruary. Mental toughnesswill play a big factor.”
