Principal’s Message Welcome back to Kingsville families for the second term of the school year. In this first short week we missed out on the usual Monday morning assembly and the opportunity for

a whole school welcome back. Personally however, being outside in the grounds before 9am on Tuesday I was able to witness first hand the joy and excitement associated with students returning to school. In many cases screaming, laughter and greetings were more like a response to a separation of months rather than just a couple of weeks – absolutely delightful. There were a few tears from younger students but they were soon overcome. Parents and family members were also “all smiles”, as the children moved off into classrooms. Some audible sighs were noted – yes holidays over and students back at school. A great beginning to the term and well done everyone. Please note there are only nine full weeks now in the term and they will be very busy so please ensure you check all dates, newsletters and Compass posts or notes sent home. Let us look forward together now to an exciting and rewarding second term in this our Centenary year. ANZAC Day Ceremony During the last hour of the school day on Wednesday of this week Anzac Day eve the school came together for the traditional commemorative ceremony. This was in 2019 a completely student led occasion attended by students, staff and a number of parents. It was well prepared, resourced, memorable and solemn and respectful in nature. Under the guidance of Tracey Doherty teacher 3/4T and Jacqui Leslie teacher 3/4F, a Year 6 student team made up of Heidi Junge, Kip Arthur, Willow Macquire, Alison Rae, Harriet Gould, Rafid Haider, Aida Hudson, Isabella Townley and Angus Ernst, led the school through all parts of the ceremony. This was a great example of student action and student voice and, the students involved were excellent role models for all other children. It was obvious in the presentations just how much work and co-operation had gone into the preparation. Each component of the ceremony was delivered with pride, passion and a true sense of occasion. Well done to the student leaders involved and, also congratulations to all Kingsville students for their participation in this event. A special mention to our 101 Foundation students who only attended their first full school assembly late last term. In addition, thank you to our staff who ensured students were well prepared for this important occasion and, Jessica Rankin Performing Arts teacher and the school choir. A floral tribute, usually a wreath is an important component of ceremonies to commemorate ANZAC Day. Thank you to Sally Green, past Kingsville parent and a very talented florist who again this year made up and donated a stunning wreath for our ceremony. Parents and family members who were able to be there and be part of the audience your attendance was highly valued. Centenary Celebrations Happy Birthday Kingsville Whilst these will go on throughout the school year School Council has determined that Saturday August 17th will be the main day for celebrations for the community and the public to mark the centenary of Kingsville Primary School. Please see details re printed from the newsletter item 29th March

Saturday August 17th

will be the main day for celebrations for the community and the public to mark the Centenary of Kingsville Primary School this year. This of course is the closest Satruday to the official opening of the school which took place on 15/8/1919.

The students will also celebrate on Thursday August 1st as 1/8/1919 was Day 1 for students at the school. A Centenary subcomittee of School Council is now being set up and Jessica Rankin, Performing Arts teacher has taken on the role of convenor. Terry Cumming School Council President will also be a key contact and support as we move ahead with planning and organisation. The School Council would like to acknowledge all the work undertaken by members of the 2018 CPR/Centenary sub committee. Their investigations and research ensured a great deal was in place that the working party will now be able to take up, refine and use in making their final decisions in planning for the events in August. Thank you to Christie Miller, Sam Eason, Lilian Burton, Dale Schumann, Jeff McDonald, Graeme Hodgart, Sarah Thomas and Cassandra Le Marshall. Also other parentds/members of the community who contributed ideas during the year. The first meeting of the 2019 subcommittee will take place next Monday 29th April beginning at 6pm and will run for approximately 70 minutes. Please note you do not have to be a member of the subcommittee to come along or volunteer to assist with the work involved. It is important at this stage of the year to note there is only just under 12 weeks until August 1st and that there is a great deal that needs to be organised to ensure the necessary actions are carried out. Student enrolments 2020 Preparing for student enrolments for the next school year always begins early in Term 2.

Step 1

- establish what the requirement for places will be from current KPS families for 2020

So we need a response now from any current families who are likely to request a placement for a child into Foundation 2020. Whilst there may be some ‘in question’ placements e.g. age, or possible residential move or, a further year in pre-school please lodge your details now to assist us in this first planning stage. If there are any need for changes later in the year then your request can be adjusted. In 2019 we have just under one third of our total cohort of 101 being siblings of older students. We need to establish very quickly what percentage is likely for 2020. Please email us [email protected] with subject line Foundation Enrolment 2020

Sunsmart In line with school policy and government expectations related to being a Sunsmart school students are required to wear sun hats until April 30th. Explaining to children that even though the sun is not visible the UV radiation is extremely high from August to the end of April can be tricky. Ultraviolet radiation (UV) is both the major cause of skin cancer and we cover up whenever UV levels are 3 or higher. So let us take this task on board together i.e. some explaining at home and some at school. Some data from Friday 26th April: Max temperature 19C Min temperature 16C Max UV 3 between 10am and 2pm Sun Protection Required Jeff McDonald Assistant Principal Student Voice and student Wellbeing

We want our students to tell us what they think

At Kingsville we value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality

instruction. The Attitudes to School Survey is an annual student survey designed by the Department of

Education and Training, to assist schools in gaining an understanding of student perceptions and

experience of school. Kingsville will use the survey results again in 2019 as it has done in previous years

to inform programs and practice with a view to ensuring student attitude, opinion and voice, is heard and

understood.

Results from the 2018 survey were very pleasing and saw improvement across all survey factor areas,

and we are hopeful to again see positive results this year.

Students in levels 4, 5 and 6 will participate in the 2019 survey. If you have a child/children in these

levels they will complete the survey online during school hours using a secure online survey tool. Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The student login is an assigned identifier that may be used to link data for statistical and research purposes only. All responses to the survey are kept anonymous in the response file. Personal identification data will not be recorded in the survey response file. This ensures that the confidentiality of your child’s responses is protected at all times.

This year the Attitudes to School Survey will be conducted at Kingsville during week 3 of this term. The survey only takes 15 minutes to complete and will be carried out during class time.
