Texas A&M-Kingsville The Javelinas are 1-5 on the season and 0-3 in the LSC. Texas A&M-Kingsville is coming off a 38-34 loss to Tarleton State. TAMUK’s lone win came in a 38-20 win over Missouri S&T. Dan Wilkerson is in his first season as head coach at Kingsville and it will be the first time he has faced the Rams as a head coach. Prior to Kingville, Wilkerson was on the Colorado State-Pueblo staff from 2008-2014. The Series The Rams trail the overall series 15-33 overall but have won the last two meetings. ASU is 9-15 all-time versus the Javelinas in San Angelo. The series started in 1968 and it will be the 49th all-time meeting. Throwback Uniforms The Angelo State football team will pay tribute to the late Ben Kelly this Saturday with throwback uniforms. Kelly played for San Angelo College from 1953-1954 and was likely the first black player to compete for a previously all-white college football team. His first game on September 19, 1953 against Phoenix College was eight months before the Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. Board of Education. He was a two time All-Pioneer Conference first team selection. The Rams went 10-8-1 in Kelly’s 19 games. After playing two years in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants, Kelly returned to San Angelo to run the Boys and Girls Club for 29 years. Kelly passed away at the age of 83 on November 15, 2014. Defensive Touchdowns The Rams continued to score on the defensive side of the ball. Clayton Callicutt fell on a fumble in the endzone for his third career touchdown. It is the second straight week ASU has scored a defensive touchdown and fourth time this season. Chasing 31Clayton Callicutt has 27.5 sacks for his career. He has surpassed Greg Collins and is now in sole possesion of second place on the ASU all-time career sack list. The senior is chasing Dane Krager’s mark of 31 set from 1998-2001. Krager owns the ASU single season record with 15 sacks in 1999. Callicutt has a season high 3.0 sacks against West Texas A&M and has 7.5 sacks this season.

Top 10 ReceiverDonovan Thompson recorded his third straight game of at least 100 yards receiving against Texas A&M-Commerce. The sophomore made nine catches for 127 yards. He has four games of at leat 100 yards receiving. He is No. 6 nationally with 680 yards, No. 7 in receiving yards per game (113.3) and No. 7 in receptions per game (8.0). He is currently on pace to break the ASU record for receptions in a season which is 74 held by V’Keon Lacey. He is also on pace to break ASU’s receiving yards record in a season which is 1,091.

Record BreakerKyle Washington added another note to his career on Saturday. The senior surpassed the 2,000 passing yard mark and now has 2,005 on the season. He becomes the first quarterback in school history to throw for at least 2,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. Washington is one of four quarterbacks (Ned Cox, Erik Hartman, Josh Neiswander) to throw for at least 2,000 yards in back-to-back seasons. ASU has only seen a passer throw for over 2,000 yards 11 times now. The senior has set nine career highs this season. He owns the ASU career passing touchdowns and total offensive yards. Washington is still on the verge of breaking a few more ASU career records as well.

Stout Run DefenseThe Rams continued to limit potent rushing attacks. Texas A&M-Commerce had averaged 248.0 yards per game but ASU held the Lions to just 148 yards on the ground. ASU has limited teams to just 131.3 yards per game on the season with three teams being held under 100 yards. The Rams have held five opponents under 100 yards since defensive coordinator Jeff Girsch started last season. The Rams haven’t held three teams under 100 yards in a single season since 2013. The rushing defense is ranked No. 2 in the LSC and No. 52 nationally. Career HighDespite being injured the last two games, John Siliga didn’t let the injury affect his play against Texas A&M-Commerce. The senior recorded a career high 10 tackles with three solo. He made his first sack of the season and added 2.5 tackles for loss. Siliga has made 23 stops on the season with 5.5 tackles for loss.

Career FirstTrevor Stafford added a caree first with his second career catch. The junior caught a two-yard pass from Kyle Washington for his first career touchdown at the 7:40 mark of the fourth quarter. The junior has two career catches. The first was an eight yard reception in 2014.

Top D-LinemenThe defensive line has been a key to ASU’s defense this season. The Rams are No. 21 nationally with 3.17 sacks per game and No. 13 with 9.0 tackles for loss per game. ASU has 54 tackles for loss which is tops in the LSC and the 19 sacks on the year is also No. 1 in the confernece.

LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union FieldThe Rams are 12-12 all-time at home under head coach Will Wagner. Since the debut of LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field, ASU is 5-3 in two seasons. This will be the first matchup with Texas A&M-Kingsville at the Rams new home.

Rams Offensive LineThe Rams offensive line has paved the way for the No. 2 nationally ranked offense. It has also protected quarterback Kyle Washington. The offensive line has limited teams to just three sacks through six games this season. A total of 11 different players have seen time on the line this season.

Scoring on the GroundThe Rams scored all five touchdowns against West Texas A&M on the ground. ASU has scored 16 rushing touchdowns on the season and leads the conference. It is the second game of the season the Rams have scored five rushing touchdowns in a single game, the other being against Oklahoma Panhandle State.

School RecordTrey Green wrote his name in the ASU record book with one run against Bacone. The junior took a handoff made a move and carried the ball 96 yards to pay dirt, the longest rush in school history. The previous long was 95 yards set by Kyle Fox in 2005 against West Texas A&M.

Team CaptainsKyle Washington, Talon Smith, Clayton Callicutt and Richard Franklin were selected as captains for the 2015 season by their teammates. Washington is a three-time captain while Smith, Callicutt and Franklin are serving for the first time.

The ProgramAngelo State won the NAIA National Championship in 1978 and has won three Lone Star Conference Championships (1978, 1984, 1987). The Rams have seen six NCAA D-II playoff appearances and produced 62 All-Americans. ASU has earned 31 winning seasons dating back to 1964. Angelo State has sent 11 student-athletes on to successful NFL careers, including Pierce Holt, who earned two Super Bowl rings with the San Francisco 49ers in 1988 and 1989. He was a two-time Pro Bowl selection and was inducted into the NCAA Division II Football Hall of Fame in 2000. Legendary Baylor head coach Grant Teaff coached at ASU, and has been inducted into the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame with Holt and former Rams’ tackle Rodney Cason.
