    2019 Annual Report

    Celebrating 35 Years of Caring

    Dear Caring Friends,

In 1985, local churches, businesses, and a small group of college students came together to create a centralized location to care for their neighbor. What began as a small ministry of the churches has grown into an organization which allows neighbor to serve neighbor through various ministries all supported by the gifts and talents of the community.

Besides numbers and historical data, the 2019 Annual Report will show how YOU have impacted YOUR community over the years through the giving of your time, talents, and resources. Whether you have been connected for 35 years or you have only just begun, we are blessed to have you as part of the caring team.

We are thankful to continue to have the support of the community and look forward to what God will do through you in the next 35 years.

    27th ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

Lake Wales Country Club hosted the 27th Annual Golf Tournament sponsored by Chemical Containers in early November. Colleagues, friends, and families made up the one hundred forty-six golfers who played in the tournament.

Two flights of golf made up for a day full of golfing which concluded with a delicious dinner. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, all golfers went home with their pick of a prize.

A special thank you to our tournament sponsor, event sponsors, hole sponsors and golfers who helped raise over $25,000 during the Annual Golf Tournament. These funds benefit the programs offered by Care Center throughout the year.

    2019 SPECIAL EVENTS

The national program Empty Bowls fights hunger across the country with community involvement through self developed events to raise awareness of the “empty bowls” in its community. Care Center kicked off 35 years of caring by inviting community leaders and local artists to participate.

Community members gathered in late January 2020 to enjoy the art created and bid on a bowl of their choice at the auction at First Presbyterian of Lake Wales. Local restaurants donated their signature soup to provide guests with samples during the reception. This year, 185 people participated in painting bowls in the 2019-2020 event, including neighbors in Care Center’s Transitional Housing and ESOL programs.

The funds raised from this event will be used to further the hunger relief programs offered through Care Center including: Meals On Wheels, Food Pantry, Holiday Food Baskets, Transitional Housing and Community Kitchen.

Mayors from around Florida gathered to learn more about Care Center and the community after

    a nomination by Mayor Fultz.

The Lake Wales community was changed by the life of a young man named Palmer Reddick who

passed away unexpectedly in Fall of 2019. Palmer was the epitome of a caring servant and will be

deeply missed at Care Center camps and the Lake Wales Thrift Store. He served 1063 hours in just

~ Gayleene Gilbreath ~ 20 Years of Caring ~ After serving 20 years as staff at Lake Wales Care Center, Gayleene Gilbreath retired with plans to return as a volunteer! Gayleene wore several hats during her time at Care Center, including but not limited to: Office Manager, Donor Relations, and Volunteer Coordinator. She had a gift for knowing exactly where anything would be. If you were looking for a certain obscure object, you could ask Gayleene and she’d say, “It’s in the second cabinet, third shelf, in a box with a blue lid.” Her caring demeanor and fun spirit is responsible for many of the volunteers who have volunteered over the years. The relationships Gayleene built over 20 years is something that can not be replaced, but we will all do our best to continue her legacy of caring.

BASIC NEEDS - 1,736 Requests Filled Providing food and clothing were at the heart of Care Center from the moment its doors opened in 1985. Financial assistance was added shortly after allowing neighbor to care for neighbor.

When a crisis happens, finances can put a major strain on families and individuals. Care Center assists people going through short-term crisis in the form of financial assistance and tangible resources such as food, clothing, and furniture.

Through case management, clients are able to learn how to care for themselves and provide for their families. Case managers look at long term solutions as well as immediate needs and work with clients to find the best way for them to overcome obstacles.

In 2019, Care Center provided over $200,000 of short-term cash assistance utilizing and coordinating funding from Duke Energy Good Neighbor Fund, Federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program, Florida Blue, Florida’s Natural Growers Foundation, George Jenkins Foundation, Health Care Fund, Mountain Lake Community Service, Westgate Resorts Foundation and resources from our own budget through community donations.

    FAMILY SERVICES

“My husband was unable to work while undergoing medical treatments. Care Center helped me manage our finances so we were able to keep our family together until he was able to return to work. ”

~ A Neighbor who received assistance

Helping a family with a home repair or food is just one part of serving. Home visits allow staff and volunteers to get a first hand look at a person’s situation and be able to share the love of Christ with them in word and deed. Through a home visit, case managers can accurately assess the needs within a home to find the best way to care for their neighbor.

    519 individuals received special counsel.

    355 families/individuals were assisted financially.

328 neighbors selected clothing, furniture, household, baby, medical equipment and other items.

Each family assisted was presented the love of Christ in word and deed.

“I just received custody of my grandson and was in need of furniture in his bedroom. A case manager was able to come visit our home and help me figure out what we needed. While he was there, he prayed with me and let me know I wasn’t alone in my struggle.”

    ...from a client

In 1990, Care Center renovated its first donated home to be used for the Transitional Housing program. The program is designed to provide families the opportunity to live in a safe, nurturing environment during a time of transition in their lives. Families and individuals build a community of support through events like art day, barbeques, and Bible study. On the Job Training in other Care Center programs allows members to acquire the skills needed to seek and keep employment while working in a Christian environment. The work environment offers forgiveness but also holds participants accountable and teaches them to become better employees.

Participants in the program come from a variety of circumstances that have left them without a place to call home. Acceptance into the program is by application and personal interview. During their stay in the program, individuals set goals which include improving skills in financial management, spiritual development, family dynamics and more. Transitional Housing is more than a roof over their head; it is a place to call home and learn about the unconditional love of God.

“Being in the Transitional Housing program has allowed my son and I to have a fresh start. We have been able to grow and strengthen spiritually in a safe and supportive environment.”

In 1988, Care Center assumed responsibility for the local Meals on Wheels program. This program is designed to allow people with factors such as aging, surgery, or a disability to receive a hot meal and not have to worry about preparing it themselves. Some neighbors need meal assistance for a temporary period following something like a surgery while others receive assistance on a more permanent basis.

Smiles as well as meals are delivered Monday through Friday throughout the community along eight different routes. Meals are delivered not just in Lake Wales, but Frostproof,

Dundee and Indian Lake Estates. AdventHealth Lake Wales prepares the meals daily with specialized entrees for the dietary needs of individuals. There are no income limitations and the sliding scale fee is available for those who may need financial assistance.

MEALS ON WHEELS - DELIVERED TO NEIGHBORS BY NEIGHBORS

    14,865 Meals Delivered - 157 Recipients

Who qualifies for meals? Individuals who…

have physical limitations or are disabled

have a hardship in preparing meals

are recovering from surgery and are temporarily unable to prepare meals for themselves

Volunteers pick up meals from AdventHealth Lake Wales and then deliver to their assigned route. Drivers become more

than delivery agents, they become reliable friends. Recipients look forward to seeing their friends every day.

Care Center started offering assistance with the holidays in its first year of operations. Since then, the program has evolved from volunteers choosing gifts for families to parents being actively involved in their children’s Christmas. Families participate in community activities which encourage growth and help them to make new connections in their neighborhoods. For Christmas, parents are able to “shop” for their children in the Christmas center lovingly called “Parents Choice.” This allows parents to choose their own presents for their children and gives them a sense of dignity. Families also received a food box full of holiday foods for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

In the 2019 holiday season, the community surrounding Lake Wales Care Center gave almost 48,000 pounds of food and over 6,500 gifts. Local schools, churches, and businesses contributed as well as families and individuals.

Volunteer sorters, gift wrappers, and drivers work tirelessly to ensure each family is able to have a Merry Christmas. One volunteer who worked in the Christmas center for the first time last year said that when she was working this

year, some of the parents recognized her and were so grateful for a familiar face to share this experience with.

HOLIDAY SERVICES - 757 Families Assisted

899 Children Received Gifts - 47,819 Pounds of Food Donated

Members of the Lady Cobras softball team were just one of numerous volunteers who helped to deliver food baskets this Thanksgiving and Christmas. The girls had such a great time they asked their coach what else they could do to serve!

“The Christmas meal is such an important thing to me. The table is where you find your family. I cherish that time we can gather around the table and reflect on our blessings. Thank you for everything.”

~ From a student in the Literacy program who received a food basket for Christmas. Community groups, like this group of friends and family,

gather to help moms and dads wrap gifts they have selected for their children.

In 1998, Care Center hosted a Pregnancy Care Resource program which was run by some local college students. After a few years, the program coordinators moved away so the program was put on hold. In 2015, the program was reinitiated under the name Choices Pregnancy Care Program.

Choices understands a woman concerned about an unplanned pregnancy may face some of the most difficult decisions she will ever make. The staff and volunteers specialize in helping women get the facts and resources they need to make an informed decision. Our prayer is these women make a life affirming decision. Of the 72 clients who came to Choices in 2019, 41 of them were either abortion minded or abortion vulnerable. All women are welcome as there are no income or residency requirements. Moms and dads, who desire, are paired up with Christian mentors to walk along their journey with them, before and after delivery. BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN 2019

  • In 2010, High Point Church began serving a free, hot meal to community members on a Sunday afternoon. Each week, church members would prepare a tasty dish to share with their neighbors and volunteers would help serve. After a few years, High Point members approached Care Center about the possibility of allowing for more churches to participate. Since then, churches and groups have been providing meals and volunteers each week to feed their neighbors.

Rather than the traditional soup kitchen where diners wait in a line for a meal, Community Kitchen provides a “restaurant experience” and allows diners to be seated while volunteers serve their drinks and meal. Bread and desserts provided by the local Publix bakeries who

donate baked goods to Care Center every day.

Alternating churches and groups provide the food and volunteers each week. The 2019 groups included: Christ’s Church on the Move, Deep Waters Ministry, First Baptist, First Presbyterian, First United Methodist, h.e.a.r.t. Institute, High Point Church, KVAM Foundation, Lake Wales High School, Ridge Community Church, the Smith/VanLerberg Small Group, Care Center’s Transitional Housing Families & Staff groups, and Warner University.

Community Kitchen isn’t just about food - its about building community between neighbors and sharing the love of Christ. Before the meal, diners and volunteers gather together for a devotional. After serving, volunteers are encouraged to sit with diners and learn more about each other over the meal.

If you or your group would like to participate in this ministry, please contact us at 863-676-6678.

LAKE WALES LITERACY COUNCIL - 103 Students - 3,607 Educational Hours

Since 1989, the mission of Lake Wales Literacy Council (LWLC) is to improve the literacy of adults so that they may be more productive citizens in the Lake Wales community. LWLC offers the following services at no charge to students:

One-on-one tutoring in Adult Basic Education (ABE) reading, writing, and math for individuals reading below the 9th grade level

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) for students who want to improve their English language proficiency and to ease the process of cultural and social assimilation through one-on-one, small group or class instruction; support for other area groups offering ESOL instruction

Tutoring for those eligible to take the US Citizenship test

Workplace literacy programs and other programs tutoring those pursuing their GED or developing their English language skills

Students are eager to learn and are always ready to lend a hand, often showing up to volunteer at community events. Classes are available at multiple locations on various days allowing students the flexibility they need to learn regardless of their schedule. Many students attend multiple classes allowing them to make the most of their education. Thank you to First Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church, and Holy Spirit Catholic Church for hosting classes on a weekly basis.

An important part of the ESOL classes is learning about their community. Here, members of the class visited Bok Tower Gardens

  • STAY-AT-HOME-WORK CAMP - 296 Campers 2019 Theme - Warrior - Ephesians 6:10-17

Less than one year into operations, the youth of the community wanted a way to serve their neighbors. The first Stay-at-Home Work Place took place in 1986 with students sleeping in the basement of a local church. This summer, over the course of 3 week long camps, 296 people subjected themselves to the summer heat so they could serve their neighbor. Middle and High School students voluntarily give up their summer break to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Days start with a hearty breakfast and devotional; after working a full day, students end the day with a worship service. Fun and games are had along the way and students return year after year to claim the honor of special awards received based on years attended. Many have attended as campers and now return with their own children!

    THANKSLIVING CAMP - 132 Participants

When Hurricane Katrina devastated parts of the south in 2005, students asked if they could spend their Thanksgiving break helping. Work Camp on the Road began. In 2008, the students wanted to keep up the habit of serving locally and so ThanksLiving camp was born, allowing students to serve their community once again. ThanksLiving Camp focuses on relational service in the community, spending time doing crafts at nursing homes or retirement communities, delivering

Thanksgiving food baskets to local families, setting up “Caring Trees” at local businesses, hosting Backyard Bible Clubs, visiting Meals on Wheels recipients, and other random acts of kindness throughout the community. This year’s theme was Rooted based on Colossians 2:6-7 where students learned how to be rooted in Christ. Twenty-three churches were represented at camp this year.

4th Annual ACT LIKE MEN RETREAT - 29 Participants

Act Like Men started in 2017 after a few fathers who’s children had attended Stay-at-Home Work Camp wanted to create a similar experience for men. Men gather from local churches in early January to serve through various work projects. The group bases their weekend on 1 Corinthians 16:13-14, “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.” This year, the men were able to complete a few projects including repairing a roof for a local family and remodeling a Transitional Housing apartment. Men enjoy fellowship and worship together throughout the weekend and are housed at Lake Aurora Christian Camp.

HOME REPAIRS - 76 Projects Completed Volunteers work year round trying to keep up with the need for home repairs for local homeowners who physically or financially cannot do work on their own. Home repairs can include everything from plumbing issues to painting a whole house. Winter visitors “ramp up” the facility crew during the winter months by building wheel chair ramps for local residents while local volunteers do projects throughout the year. Larger projects like roofing and painting are saved for large group projects.

Campers don’t just do service projects, they

offer hope to everyone they connect with!

When Care Center opened it’s doors in 1985, volunteers would once a month take clothes that weren’t needed by community members and sell them in a sidewalk sale to help raise funds. Two years later, the first thrift store started operating out of the basement at the offices. Since then, the Lake Wales Thrift Store has been in three different locations as it has continued to grow. In 2010, Care Center opened a second Thrift Store location in Dundee which has now located to a larger location further north on Hwy 27. Based on community needs, Care Center began Online Sales in 2003, Antiques & Oddities program in 2010, and Kathryn’s Christian Books, Gifts, & More in 2015.

You support the other programs of Care Center and minister to the community around you any time you shop or donate. The first priority of donated items is to make them available to families in need. Surplus items are then sold in the stores and online at reasonable prices, giving the community a low cost place to shop. Kathryn’s Christian Store creates an atmosphere of fellowship where people can meet over coffee or ice cream to discuss a new book or just check in on each other. The stores also provide on the job training to community members through programs like transitional housing, community service, volunteer-to-work, and internships.

  • Since 1993, Roosevelt Academy has allowed Care Center to participate in their On-the-Job Training Program (OJT.) Many students at Roosevelt are headed to trade school or into the work force after graduation so teachers work to prepare them for life outside of school walls. Students work with volunteers and staff to learn valuable job experience while completing their high school requirements. Students learn social and hands-on job experience which lets them have a better chance of gaining and keeping employment. Store employees and volunteers are grateful for the chance to work with such special young people.

High school students are encouraged to volunteer to earn community service hours for graduation. Students in the ESE (Exceptional Student Education) Program take time during their day to volunteer for a few hours allowing them to learn valuable life skills they will be able to use after graduation.

The Restorative Justice Program provides students who have been suspended the opportunity to “restore” their school record by volunteering instead of staying home; many students take this opportunity and use it as a learning experience. Students from all programs are a valued part of the store community and are welcomed with open arms. Parents are glad their children have a place to contribute and learn.

h.e.a.r.t. - HUNGER EDUCATION AND RESOURCE TRAINING Students from h.e.a.r.t. Institute, a local missionary training ground located on the campus of Warner University, take a week of their semester to learn social ministry in the Lake Wales area.

Through sitting in on case management, delivering meals to shut-ins and elderly, helping with ESOL classes, working at the thrift stores, and visiting other local ministries students are able to learn various

aspects of serving. Through this partnership, many h.e.a.r.t. students become interns at Care Center to continue learning.

Students visit other ministries to learn how different agencies serve their community. Here, students visit The Mission of Winter Haven.
