THE KINGS DIFFERENCEAn educational ethos which puts you first

The move from school in your home country to university in another is one of the biggest transitions you can ever make.

There are several ways of doing this. Some students might go straight to a university Foundation programme. Others might first go to a traditional Public School.

While these paths might be right for some students we believe that for most international students there is a better way. The Kings way.

A long history of success

• Kings was founded over sixty years ago. Since then, we have been at the forefront of quality education.

• We specialise in teaching students from all around the world, who consistently win places at the UK’s top universities.

An expertly managed transition

• As an international student you have much to contend with before you even set foot inside a UK classroom — the language, culture and social environment are all new.

• At Kings, we make the experience of transitioning to a new way of living and learning smooth, supportive — and lots of fun.

A personal, student-centred ethos

• As an international student you’ll need specialist, personalised support. We ensure that your total student experience is a happy, fulfilling and enriching one — and therefore successful.

• We focus on every element equally — academic progress, English development, cultural adjustment, personal support, university guidance, extracurricular opportunities and accommodation provision.

A modern, global outlook

• At Kings, our students don’t wear uniforms. They are not expected to learn mottos or adopt ancient rituals.

• Instead you’ll learn in an international environment which uniquely combines the independent thought of university study with the support of a traditional Sixth Form.

An unlimited choice

• We won’t force you to make decisions today which close off better opportunities tomorrow.

• At Kings, you’ll be free to choose whichever subjects you like, and whichever universities you like — always with guidance from our experts.

A student-friendly college experience

• Our colleges are not located within isolated campuses but in safe, convenient parts of the UK’s most popular, internationally-minded cities .

• Here, you won’t get ‘lost in the crowd’. Kings Colleges are friendly and intimate, described most commonly by our students as being like a family.

“ I’m proud to be part of a team that provides a professional, supportive environment that meets the needs of our students and helps them to develop both academically and socially. In 2018, almost two thirds of students on our Advanced Level Foundation achieved Distinction grades — a testament to the dedication and hard work of both students and teachers. ”

Marc Benier Head of Academic Subjects Kings Brighton

THE KINGS SYSTEMA learning system designed for your success

We know how to equip you with the skills you need to succeed at university. That’s because we have decades of experience in developing a system purposely designed to prepare you to excel at the very best UK universities.

We have over 60 years of success behind us. Our focus now is on your future success.

“ The staff were very helpful in helping me choose which universities I was interested in and what subjects I was interested in. They helped me set up meetings with students who had gone to universities I was interested in, and helped me meet up with them so I could speak with them about their experience.

If you’re trying to juggle your first year at university with getting used to a whole new country and new life, that can be quite tough. I think Kings helped because it gives you a structured idea of what academic life might be life when you go to university. I think it was a really good step to getting an English undergraduate degree. ”

Nina Hasebe from Japan, studied Artificial Intelligence and Robotics at King’s College, London (#35)

THE KINGS FAMILY: OUR STUDENTS

1. We know what universities are looking for

• Academic ability alone is no longer sufficient for acceptance to the best UK universities.

• Kings students win places at the very best universities because we develop their full potential — inside and outside of the classroom.

4. We ensure very small classes

• Smaller class sizes means greater teacher contact time and a more immersive learning experience.

• GCSE and A-level: 4 – 10 students per class. Foundation: 8 – 12 per class.

2. We guarantee highly qualified teachers

• All teachers are subject specialists. Many hold a second degree or equivalent qualification, including PhD.

• All Foundation teachers are also A-level teachers.

5. We deliver a total learning system

• The Kings Academic Enhancement Programme makes learning come alive by building in practical, real-world experience to complement class-based study.

• Kings Classmate is our interactive Virtual Learning Environment. It provides resources for guided and self-study outside class.

3. We support every student individually

• We ensure every student benefits from regular progress testing and skills analysis.

• Our pathways to university always include choice in order to accommodate differing abilities, ambitions or changes in focus. Our dedicated care and support teams are always available for help and advice.

6. We provide professional university guidance

• We provide expert university guidance for one of the most important decisions in life.

• Our comprehensive University Application Programme provides a clear application plan to the widest choice of universities.

THE KINGS BENEFITMaximising your opportunities, maximising your potential

At Kings, we are results-focused. We encourage and enable you to be the best you can be, and to set your ambitions as high as possible. It’s why our students win places at every leading university in the UK.

But we define results in many ways. Your exam grades, your university offers, and maximising your potential and the opportunities open to you are all ways of measuring your success.

Outstanding exam results

Of course results in formal exams are vitally important. Our rigorous approach ensures exam success year after year.

• In 2018, the number of A grades was 75% higher than the national average.

• 25% of Advanced Level Foundation students achieved the equivalent of AAA or higher.

• Two thirds of Advanced Level Foundation students achieved a result equivalent to BBB or higher.

Quality university offers

Ultimately what really counts is the quality of university offers you receive. At Kings, the very best universities offer places to our students every year. This is because they recognise the expert and thorough preparation every Kings student receives for degree-level study.

• Kings students have received offers from every one of the UK Top 20 universities.

• In 2018 over 86% of A-level students had offers from Top 20 universities.

• In 2018 over 87% of Advanced Level Foundation students had offers from Top 30 universities.

Developing your experience and profile

Ultimately, the results you’ll see at Kings can’t always be measured. Becoming a young adult, gaining new and exciting skills and experiences, developing new ways of thinking. You’ll gain all this at Kings. It will be your springboard into university and beyond that, to your career.

• Develop an independent mind and learn to think for yourself.

• Become a true global citizen, with a truly international perspective.

• Enhance your resume through sports, extracurricular activities or fundraising.

(See page 28 for more information on this).

“ Kings gave me the basis to come to university, not only the knowledge and academic aspects of it, but also the experience of studying in the UK and dealing with a different system. It all came together at Kings and they orientate you to what you should do, how you should study effectively and offer huge support after you finish your course and come to university. They are the reason why I am here. ”

Lisys Zaire from Brazil, studying International Relations at Loughborough University (#5)

THE KINGS FAMILY: OUR STUDENTS Improving your resultsNo matter what your academic ability, interests or ambitions, we’ll ensure that you will achieve more than you ever thought possible.

We call it “adding value”. It’s a concept which is central to our entire educational approach.

• If you are an A student, we’ll work to turn you into a A student.

• If you are a C student, at Kings we’ll help you become a B or an A student.

• If you are thinking about a Top 10 university, we’ll help you decide if Oxbridge is right for you.

Highlights of our 2018 UK colleges' results*

• 39% of A-level students exceeded their predictions by either 2 or 3 grades.

• 65% of Advanced Level Foundation students achieved higher grades than initially predicted.

* According to GL Assessment (CAT 4). Find out more in the dedicated factsheet.

QUALITY YOU CAN TRUSTWhen choosing an international college it is important to make an informed choice based on evidence. Independent validation provides the clearest and truest proof of quality. We are proud that Kings' quality is recognised by leading independent bodies, and equally proud of the faith they place in us.

Independent recognition by educational experts. Your surest guarantee of quality.

UK Government Department for Education — Ofsted inspections

Each Kings College is registered as a Boarding School by the UK Government Department for Education and therefore inspected by Ofsted — the most rigorous and detailed inspection regime in the country.

All our colleges are accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English.

The Kings Advanced Level Foundation has Pearson assured status, awarded after an annual Pearson audit of quality assurance.

IELTS is the largest and most respected test of English for educational and training purposes in the world. Kings Oxford has been the official IELTS Test Centre for the Oxford region for over 20 years.

All Kings Colleges are accredited Delivery Centres for CTH programmes — one of the world’s leading specialist professional bodies.

In 2016, Kings was awarded the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise. This recognises our contribution to international education.

“ School leaders and directors have ensured that all the independent school standards are met. They have created a strong welcoming open ethos. Students from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds have developed secure, trusting relationships. ”

Extract from the latest Ofsted Inspection Report of Kings Oxford, May 2016

“ The school’s work to promote pupils’ personal development and welfare is outstanding. Excellent relationships at all levels and a high degree of trust make the college a stimulating and pleasant place for everyone to work. ”Extract from the latest Ofsted inspection report of Kings London, January 2018.

“ I would recommend Kings, especially if you’re not used to the education system in the UK — Kings is a very good bridge for that and it will help you prepare and settle in before having to come to university. ”

Melissa Bilambo from the DR Congo, studying Economics and Management at Durham University (#7)

A BRITISH EDUCATIONThe British education system is widely regarded as one of the finest in the world.

As you progress, the UK education system provides increased focus on the subjects in which you are most interested, whilst still allowing you to keep your options open. Students study for 13 years before a 3-year undergraduate degree and 1-year postgraduate degree.

The Gold Standard UK education system. Delivered by a college with a global reputation.

A-level and Foundation subject choices

The UK A-level system allows students to choose which subjects they would like to study. The choice of subjects can be a difficult decision. Our personal tutors and UCAS advisors will work with you to help you choose the perfect combination for you.

As our Advanced Level Foundation is based on A-level, you have the same flexibility to make subject choices as A-level students (see pages 22 – 23).

Facilitating subjects

Your Advanced Level studies (whether A-level or Foundation) are designed to develop both knowledge and transferable skills. While there are common subject combinations, the actual choice is down to you. However, some degrees may have specific subject requirements.

There are some subjects that are required more often. The Russell Group of leading UK universities refer to these as facilitating subjects.

These are:

You do not need all your subjects to be facilitating. Many students will include one or two facilitating subjects in their choices.

The best advice is to talk to our team of experts to help you decide which subjects suit you.

Requirements for Oxbridge entry

Students who are thinking about applying to Oxford or Cambridge will need to have the following.

1. Exceptional A-level grades

Oxford will usually require a minimum of AAA A-level grades. Cambridge will usually require A*AA. Many courses may ask for more, so it is important to refer to specific course entry requirements.

2. Genuine subject enthusiasm and wider reading

Students who can demonstrate a genuine passion for their subject and evidence of wider reading will have an advantage over those who have simply followed the syllabus.

3. A strong interview

The Oxbridge interview is more formal and more demanding than at other universities. We advise students to expect an intellectual interrogation — but a friendly one! Candidates may be asked to show evidence of lateral thinking, personal observation, or even to talk about a subject outside their specialism.

4. Additional pre-entry tests

Oxford in particular has a wide range of pre-entry tests, so students should check if the course they’re interested in requires them to take one.

Helping exceptional candidates stand out

At Kings we work hard to support students who have the ability and dedication to follow this path. Several of our staff are Oxbridge alumni and therefore have personal experience of the process.

Alongside regular individual advising sessions, Oxbridge candidates at Kings will benefit from:

• Facilitated visits to open days to ensure they are as informed as impossible about life at Oxbridge, and the colleges which are most suited to their field of study and way of life.

• Specialist help from subject specific teachers, who will help build and progress students’ passion for their chosen subject and provide in-depth advice on appropriate supplementary material.

• Numerous mock interviews — taken under timed conditions and at least two months before the ‘real’ one so that students can see their weaknesses and establish how to address them.

• Guidance on pre-entry tests and how to prepare for them.

There are around 8,000 applicants for medical places each year — but only about 600 places available for international applicants. We have developed a carefully planned programme to support our exceptional students with ambitions to be accepted to medical school.

“ When I reflect upon the achievements of Kings students at Loughborough University, they stand out by virtue of their generally above-average degree results and their willingness and ability to immerse themselves in the life of our vibrant student community… I can assuredly put these successes down in large part to the sound preparation for university life that Kings students receive. ”
