Acting Principal’s Message Planning for the new year As we move through term 4 it is timely to provide the community with details regarding planning for the 2019 school year.

This work has begun and will of course continue for the remainder of the year. This involves moving through prioritising and addressing every aspect relating to, or impacting upon, school organisation, overall provision and productivity. Every action needs to support the core business, purpose and values of the school. All decisions should contribute to providing the best possible learning environment for every student and also, opportunity for engagement of families, community members and stakeholders. Our Strategic Plan 2015-2018 clearly documents our purpose. Kingsville Primary School is committed to building a community of active, engaged and compassionate lifelong learners, equipped to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world in the 21st century. We see our purpose as being responsible to optimise achievement for all of our students and, to ensure provision of a guaranteed, comprehensive, differentiated, responsive and challenging curriculum for every child and for every year of the primary school life. As we move into the new Strategic Plan, beginning in 2019, our purpose is to build a purposeful community of active learners who can meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world and become responsible global citizens. In line with this, procedures relating to enrolment and placement of students in class groups should be transparent and aimed at ensuring knowledge and understanding of the processes involved. Please see details regarding these under the heading of Student Placement for 2019. All decisions associated with provision relate back to student enrolment. Knowledge of the actual student numbers at each level is the key component necessary to begin planning. From the number of grades, staff able to be provided, rooms that can be used, and right down to furniture all arise and are made possible from that magic number of students. School staffing is a very complex area and ensuring we have just the right number of teaching and support staff and, are able to adhere to all relevant industrial agreements is challenging. Student Placement 2019 It is acknowledged that a clearly defined transparent process for the placement of children into classes will lead to greater efficiency, increased understanding and improved opportunities for learning. At Kingsville Primary School we recognise the professionalism and commitment of all teaching staff in the work associated with annual student allocation to classes. Leadership has begun the work, along with the teachers in forming class groups for 2019. Vital information from teachers informs this process and the use of ‘Class Creator’ software assists with this multi layered task. When draft groups are generated they are reviewed by all staff before finalization. Please note As students at Kingsville progress from Foundation to Year 6, it is expected they will learn to work and relate to a range of teachers and students. As with all school decisions, the aim at Kingsville is to offer the best possible learning experience for all children. When we are compiling class lists many factors are taken into account including academic ability, individual needs, gender, student friendships and previous class placements/teachers. We also look at what is in the best educational interests of all of our students. It is important to note that class groups are not allocated a teacher until the whole school class model is completed. This ensures that it is the dynamic of each group which is the focus rather than, a particular teacher.

Class groups will be ready for our ‘Step Up Program’ which will take place on 11th December. This experience will provide students an opportunity to meet both their new class mates and their teacher for 2019. Of course meeting the teachers is dependent on all our teaching positions being filled by that time which is not always the case. At this stage who all of the teaching staff will be in 2019 is an unknown. We have like all schools, a number of teachers on short term contracts and, longer term contracts linked to permanent Kingsville staff currently on Parental Absence Leave or other types of leave. Some of these staff will be returning in 2019 in either a full time or part time capacity. Current staff are also applying for positions in other schools and may not be returning to Kingsville in 2019. Parents are asked to assist the process by not requesting a particular teacher If, however there are specific educational considerations that a parent believes need to be considered of course we would want to know about these. Unless they are relatively new however we would expect classroom teachers to already be aware of such matters and would be taking these into consideration as we move through the planning process. I thank all parents for their co-operation with regard to this matter. Jeff McDonald, Acting Principal

Message from Peter Ritchie I wish to inform the community that I will be resigning from DET Victoria and my position as Assistant Principal at Kingsville Primary school on December 21st, the last day of term as I will be heading back to Newcastle in NSW. I was incredibly fortunate 13 years ago to do a day’s work as a CRT at Kingsville Primary. The day was not a very successful day, I was locked out of the classroom I was supposed to teach in and no one had a key so we had to decamp to the library for the day without any of the class resources. But this day led to a 10 week block of PE teaching, then to a 12 month contract and that was it, I have been here ever since. Kingsville Primary has provided me with fantastic opportunities over the years. I was very lucky to arrive when I did. Kingsville was just beginning their journey as a PYP school and I have lost count of the professional development opportunities that have come my way as a result of being here. From school visits to workshops to attending the Asia Pacific Conference in Singapore. My time at Kingsville has allowed me to grow as a teacher and I have worked in all levels of the school as well as taking on the roles of a Level Leader, Maths Coach and now a Primary Years Coordinator and Assistant Principal. The opportunities that I have been provided have been the result of working under some fantastic leaders that have mentored and supported me. I would like to specially thank Kath, Jeff, Blagma and Carolyn Withers, an ex-assistant principal. These people have been role models for me, their knowledge, skills and dedication have been an inspiration. I would also like to thank the students, parents and guardians who have made my time at this school such an enjoyable experience. I will take away and cherish many special memories of my time at Kingsville. Sincerely Peter Ritchie, Assistant Principal/PYP co-ordinator

Australian Mathematics Competition

Results are now available for the annual Australian Mathematics Competition. Hundreds of thousands of students in primary and secondary schools from around 30 countries sat the AMC on 9th August. Students from Year 3 to Year 12 compete on the same day, making it possibly one of the largest single events on the Australian education calendar. An Australian initiative, the AMC was introduced in 1978 as the first competition of its kind in schools here. It is now a truly international competition, it tests everything from basic numeracy skills through to advanced problem solving. This year Kingsville Primary entered 81 competitors from grades 3 and 6. The students performed extremely well and as a result we achieved a best results for the past 5 years. Kingsville had 8 students who obtained a Distinction, 37 achieved a Credit and 29 received a Proficiency Certificate. All students who competed will receive a Certificate of Participation. The school would like to make special mention of our 8 students who received Distinctions: Jasmine Volpato, Ruby Wenborn, Piers McColl, James Jago, Rafid Haider, Kaitlyn Le, Matilda Lester and Chilli Schmidt. There is also a special certificate to the student who has achieved the school’s highest standardised score. This year that certificate was awarded to Matilda Lester. Matilda’s result put her in the 94 percentile ranking. Congratulations Matilda! I would like to also congratulate all the students who participated. You displayed a courageous attitude by having a go at a difficult competition and a growth mindset by acknowledging that problems require time to think critically and creatively. Peter Ritchie, Assistant Principal/PYP co-ordinator

KPS School Council News Hi all, I’m excited to share with you that there have been a number of developments within Camp Australia (CA) in the past few weeks which includes a significant increase in resources both at a local level and nationwide level in order to improve the service overall for the children, parents and CA educators. Effective immediately we now have a dedicated account manager looking after us as opposed to a territory manager with a considerably smaller portfolio meaning more focused attention on our service and faster turnaround on changes and improvements when required. Your CA service coordinator, Arshdeep, should remain your first point of contact followed by the CA 1300 number. CA recently conducted a survey for all current CA enrolled families. A special CA team has been pulled together within school council to work with CA on how we can address the opportunities that arose as a result of the survey data as quickly as possible. All survey data is in confidence and no parent or child details have been shared with the school, school council or the school council CA team. One initiative that our new account manager has asked that we launch as soon as possible is the continuation of the CA service at KPS on student free days. We are delighted to accept this offer and can announce that this will be in effect from this coming Monday 5th of November. Educators have been rostered and the CA portal is open to take bookings as per usual. This will now be offered moving forward for all student free days based on the normal CA rates as per the online portal. All CA related questions should be directed to CA through the normal channels. Any feedback for school council please direct to me on [email protected] Thanks, Glen Yates – School Council President

Kingsville’s Centenary 2019 As you would be aware, Kingsville Primary School will be celebrating our 100th Anniversary in 2019. Our school opened its doors on Friday 1st August 1919, and we are looking forward to celebrating this momentous occasion. Preparations are well underway for a range of festivities and tributes to commemorate the event. You may have seen the ‘History of Kingsville’ display at our recent Fete, which was organised and run by Kingsville’s very own historian (and former teacher) Graeme Hodgart. Throughout the day, Graeme had a number of interesting encounters with past KPS students and community members and collected a variety of interesting anecdotes. A former student’s granddaughter told one particularly interesting story: she said that her Nanna named Valda Gardiner (nee Carlton), now aged 94 and living in Queensland, went to Kingsville as a student. Graeme made a thorough search through the old Pupil Registers and discovered the recorded names of Laurel, Raymond, Norman and Valda Carlton, who lived in Severn Street. Valda was the youngest born in 1924 and was at Kingsville only briefly from 28/1/1930 until 8/5/1931 when unfortunately, the family moved to Sunshine. Graeme had been given Valda’s phone number and so he called her and had a lengthy conversation about life in the Western Suburbs way back in the nineteen thirties. Valda said, “I grew up in the Great Depression but there was nothing great about it.” It was remarkable that she was still able to remember the birthdates of all her family members. Valda also pointed out that her father, Clarence Gibson Carlton was quite an entrepreneur especially for his time. In 1935 he was secretary of the Footscray Football Club and was re-elected for a second year but walked out in protest at the team’s performance on the field. More importantly, he actually established the Sunshine Advocate newspaper in 1924. This was the first local newspaper to be produced in the Sunshine/Keilor area. Clarrie’s trade was a printer and he was the proprietor of that paper and ran it for thirty years. He also was a Justice of the Peace. Not bad for someone who left school at the age of fourteen. Valda remembered old primary school in Kingsville and recalled that it appeared quite new to her as it was little more than ten years old at the time. One day she was caught talking in the classroom and as punishment was ordered to go stand in the huge open fireplace. Somehow she was able to talk the teacher out of being punished in that way because “I had my best coat on.” Valda recalled that some parents sent their children to Kingsville which was further away than the Powell Street School so that they didn’t have to cross the busy Williamstown Road. In those days the majority of the traffic was horse and cart and Valda noted that bread and milk was delivered in that way. As a child, she would go out to the front fence with a billy-can and the milkman would fill it up with milk each morning. Being born on 12th September, 1924 Valda Joy Carlton is most probably the oldest surviving former pupil that attended the school at Kingsville. The Centenary Working Party is still looking for more keen volunteers to assist in the planning, preparations and organisation for next year’s celebrations. If you would like to be involved, or if you have any interesting stories or anecdotes, please email: [email protected] Christie Miller, teacher and Centenary committee member

Outdoor Classroom Day On Thursday 1st November, the children of Kingsville Primary were some of the 293,039 children across Australia participating in the global campaign to celebrate and inspire outdoor learning called ‘Outdoor Classroom Day’. Although student and teachers often use our outdoor spaces as learning spaces, this day focuses in on how outdoor learning improves children’s health, engages them with learning and leads to a greater connection with nature. It teaches them critical life skills such as resilience, teamwork and creativity, and is central to children’s enjoyment of childhood.

On the day, thousands of schools around the world took lessons outdoors and prioritised playtime. In 2017, over 2.3 million children worldwide took part in the campaign.

This event provides the catalyst for parents to talk with their children about the importance of outdoor play, and can encourage families to get outdoors more often and think about how you use outdoor time as family time.

For more information about this campaign, please go to https://outdoorclassroomday.com.au/
