In class pupils will begin to cover the core elements of Art & Design. They will be able to work in groups and by themselves, developing critical analysis of their own and other artists and pupil’s work. Year: 7

Overview Students in Year 7 will be introduced to a wide range of Art, Photography and Textile techniques.

In class pupils will begin to cover the core elements of Art & Design. They will be able to work in

Break down by term In Autumn 1 and 2 students will explore colour. Within this topic they will look at the colour wheel,

tints and shades, mixing, blending and shading. They will use a variety of mediums from paint to

clay.

In Spring 1 and 2 students will explore Textiles. Within this topic they will be introduced to

fundamental textile techniques including, resist methods (batik & tie-dye), print methods (mono &

stencil printing) and construction methods (hemming, hand sewing and creating a fastening).

Pupils will use these methods and techniques to create their own pencil case based on the

theme of Rhythm and Movement.

In Summer 1 and 2 students will explore self-image. Within this topic they will look at the

photography, collage, blind drawing, mono printing and tone. Pupils will also explore the work of

a variety of artists including Picasso and Giuseppe Arcrimboldo.

Students are assessed in Arts formal elements. Pupils will be assessed for their use and application

of tone, texture, pattern, colour, composition, shape and form. Pupils will be assessed regularly

through the term receiving both verbal and written feedback.

Year: 8

Overview In Year 8 students will build on the foundations explored in Year 7. Lessons and home learning

tasks will be structured around GCSE specifications. This will give pupils an insight to Art & Design

at GCSE level and also help to support their development of key art skills.

Break down by term In Autumn 1 and 2 students will explore Landscapes and Architecture. Pupils will have the

opportunity to learn and use the following mediums and techniques, mark making, press print,

collage, photography, line drawing, wax resist and tone. Alongside this pupils will explore a

diverse range of artists including David Hockney and Andy Council.

In Spring 1 and 2 students will explore Textiles. Pupils will have the opportunity to learn a range of

printed textile techniques from batik to bubble printing and block printing. Within this project

pupils will explore working to a brief and creating multiple textile outcomes based on the theme

of Mechanical Forms.

In Summer 1 and 2 students will explore Still life & Cubism. Pupils will have the opportunity to learn

and use the following mediums and techniques sculpture, collage, pattern, photography,

painting, composition and fragmentation. Alongside this pupils will explore a diverse range of

artists including Roy Lichtenstein and Louise Nevelson.

assessed

Students are assessed in Arts formal elements. Pupils will be assessed for their use and application

of tone, texture, pattern, colour, composition, shape and form. Pupils will be assessed regularly

through the term receiving both verbal and written feedback.

Year: 9

Overview Students in Year 9 participate and explore a broad and balanced curriculum; they will build

upon skills acquired at KS3 as well as explore new techniques and mediums.

Break down by term In Autumn 1 and 2 students will begin their first sketchbook, this will be based on learning

technical skills. The aim of this project is to give students the chance to learn skills that will help to

develop their artistic abilities specific to their chosen subject.

For Art pupils, technical skills project will be based on the theme of Food and Packaging. This will

include: tone, colour blending, collage, photography, painting, annotations, presentation skills

and artist research.

For Photography pupils, technical skills project will be based on Portraiture. This will include:

framing, cropping, shutter speed, viewpoint, formal elements, layering, lighting, annotations,

presentation skills and artist research.

Pupils will work on this first sketchbook till Spring 1 (February Half Term)

In spring 2 and summer 1 and 2 students will begin their second sketchbook. This unit will take a

more structured format ensuring pupils understand how all assessment objectives can be met.

The title for Art will be: Objects.

The title For Photography will be Landscapes and Architecture.

In each unit pupils will follow the format of:

9. This year pupils will complete 2 further units, in each unit they will have structured workshops, as

well as the opportunity to explore personal ideas that fit into the theme they have been given.

knowledge and skills. Both Art and photography will be exploring the theme of Order and Disorder.

Pupils will work on this unit until the end of Spring term 1 (February half term).

In Spring 2 and Summer 1 and 2 students will begin a new unit. For this project pupils will be given

the choice between 2 titles these are: Similarities and Differences or Apart and Together.

At this stage pupils will be aware of the format and structure they must follow. As like all other units

pupils will participate in 3 workshops, which will be delivered in lesson time. The aim of these

workshops is to develop and enhance the pupil’s skills and knowledge, as well as a source of

inspiration to develop and refine their own ideas and work.

Year: 11

Overview In year 11 students will be given a new unit to complete when they return in September, they will

have till December to complete this unit. In January the pupils will be given their ESA (Exam unit).

Pupils will work on their exam unit at school and will have February half term as well as Easter to

complete any work on this unit. In late April students will sit their exam, in which they will have 2

days off timetable to complete their final outcome for their ESA (Final piece). After this pupils will

finish any remaining work from pervious units and mount their final outcomes ready for the

moderation in May.

Break down by term In Autumn 1 and 2 students will be working on a brand new unit, which will be set during their first

lesson back in September. This project will be completed by the end of Autumn term 2.

The Aim of this Autumn term unit is to given the pupils an insight in to completing a unit over a

shorter time frame in preparation for their exam.

The title for Art will be: Beginnings And Endings

The title for Photography will be: Fragments.

This unit will follow this structure to ensure all assessment objectives are covered and achieved.

In each unit pupils will follow the format of:

In Spring 1 and 2 and Summer 1 Pupils will begin working on their ESA. The title for their exam is set

by the examining body and will not be revealed till the start of spring 1. Pupils will work on their

Year: 7

Overview Students in Year 7 will be introduced to the tools and equipment in the Design Technology

workshop. They will learn how to use the tools safely and accurately in order to make a variety of

projects out of wood and plastic.

Break down by term In Autumn 1 and 2 students will design and make a wooden ‘block-bot’. A small robot made of

wood. They will also enhance their drawing skills, learning how to effectively translate their ideas

in to 3D drawings.

In Spring 1 students will design and make a wooden maze game. They will be introduced to

plastic as well as continuing to use wood.

In Spring 2 students will make a pebble tealight holder enabling them to experiment and

experience different types of timber from the 3 main categories; Hardwood, Softwood and

Manufactured Board.

In Summer 1 students will learn how to use 2d Design software to enable them to use the laser

cutter. They will design and make a headphone tidy from plastic.

In Summer 2 students will undertake a Textiles based project. The will learn how to hand sew by

making a felt monster.

Students are assessed at the end of each project in DT’s 4 main areas: Design, Make, Evaluate

and Knowledge.

Parents/carers can support their child by encouraging them to attend DT club and ensure Home

Year: 8

Overview Students in Year 8 will build on the foundations explored in Year 7. They will develop their

knowledge and understanding of the world of Design and Technology through theory lessons as

well as practical design and make projects. They will also begin to explore our responsibilities as

designers to design and make sustainable and environmentally friendly products.

Break down by term In Autumn 1 students will design and make an eco-car from wood. They will learn ways to join

wood. They will explore the concepts of renewable energy and the impact humans have on our

environment.

In Autumn 2 students will undertake a laser cut project. They will design and make an animal that

slots together without the need for glue. They will explore production techniques and systems.

In Spring 1 students will become architects and design and make their dream house. They will

continue to explore sustainability issues as well as renewable energy, fossil fuels and nuclear

power.

In Spring 2 students will undertake a plastic manipulation project and will learn how to apply heat

in various ways to manipulate plastic in to new things. We will also look at recycling.

Students in Summer 1 and 2 will consolidate their knowledge in to a passive amplifier design and

make project using both plastic and wood.

Students are assessed at the end of each project in DT’s 4 main areas: Design, Make, Evaluate

and Knowledge.

Year: 9

Overview Students in Year 9 participate and explore a broad and balanced curriculum. Students explore in

more detail the 5 main material categories; timber, polymers, fabric, metal and paper and

board.

Number of lessons over 2

Break down by term In Autumn 1 and 2 students will undertake a design and sketching project where they will learn

the different perspective drawing techniques by designing products from the 5 main material

categories. This will be combined with learning the theory behind each material category.

Students will also undertake a Remembrance Day project where they will make poppies from

recycled materials.

In Spring 1 students will undertake a practical project where they will learn different wood joints in

order to create a money box.

In Spring 2 students will undertake a modelling project where we will explore different types of

movement and directions of force. This will culminate in a design and make project of a product

for someone with a disability.

In Summer 1 students will learn how to work with metal by undertaking a design and make metal

animal project.

In Summer 2 students will use 2D design to laser cut an acrylic lamp. This will also focus on

electrical inputs, processes and outputs.

assessed

Students are assessed at the end of each project in DT’s 4 main areas: Design, Make, Evaluate

and Knowledge.

How can parents support

their child in their learning

Parents/carers can support their child by encouraging them to attend DT club and ensure Home

Learning is completed. Parents/Carers can also encourage students to help in any DIY projects at

home and encourage students to practice their drawing by designing innovative products for a

specific target audience.

Year: 10

Overview Students in Year 10 will use their knowledge, experience and skill from years 7-9 projects to begin

to lead their own design and make projects in preparation for starting their Non-Examined

Assessment in June. Students will also learn vital theory knowledge needed for their exam.

Break down by term In Autumn 1 and 2 students will lead their own design and make project entitled ‘flat pack

furniture’.

Students will learn theory knowledge from the Core Technical Principles section of the AQA GCSE

Specification

In Spring 1 and 2 students will undertake a practice Non-Examined Assessment. Students will learn

how to lay out and manage their coursework and experience the iterative design process.

Students will learn theory knowledge from the Specialist Technical Principles section of the AQA

GCSE Specification.

In Summer 1 and 2 students will lead their Non-Examined Assessment. This forms 50% of their final

GCSE grade. It is a substantial design and make project that answers the design brief set by the

examining body, AQA.

How will students be

assessed

Students are assessed in DT’s 4 main areas: Design, Make, Evaluate and Knowledge. Students will

also be assessed via mock examinations and mock non-examined assessments.

How can parents support

their child in their learning

Parents/carers can support their child by ensuring they attend DT catch up/invention sessions at

least once a week. When the Non-Examined Assessment starts it is essential that students attend

for an extra hour after school to keep up to date with their project. Parents/Carers can also

support their child by ensuring Home Learning is completed.

their exam in June.

• Non-exam assessment (NEA): 30–35 hours approx., 100 marks, 50% of GCSE.

In the Exam students are assessed on:

Year: 7

Overview Students in Year 7 will be introduced a wide range of music styles that they may have never

experienced before. Students will learn skills in the keyboard, hand drumming, the guitar and

singing. Activities will include individual, paired and whole-class musicmaking, reading notation

and tablature, listening and analysis, and performance.

Number of lessons over 2

Break down by term Students in Autumn 1 and 2 will learn basic skills in rhythm, melody, music-reading and

performance. All students will learn a set of Christmas carols to sing at the end-of term awards

event.

Students in Spring 1 and 2 will learn specific skills in the keyboard and the guitar.

Students in Summer 1 and 2 will learn about global and historical music through drumming and

study of the orchestra.

Students are assessed through performance, playing prepared exercises to the class or as part of

a class ensemble. Written work is assessed regularly with a focus on musical awareness and

vocabulary.

Performing Arts, including performing songs, reading musical notation and making judgements

through self-assessment. Students will again perform individually, as a small group and in a whole-

class ensemble.

Break down by term Students in Autumn 1 and 2 will learn how to play as part of a class band, and study composition

in the impressionist style.

Students in Spring 1 and 2 will develop more advanced guitar techniques and increase their

performance skills through the study of film music.

Students in Summer 1 and 2 will learn about the links between music and global issues through

studying the Blues and Protest Songs.

assessed

Students are assessed through performance, playing prepared exercises to the class or as part of

Year: 9

Overview Students in Year 9 intake preparation for the BTEC Performing Arts. Activities are intended to

promote independence, self-awareness through assessment, personal development and

performance confidence. The music industry and vocational opportunities are a key focus.

Break down by term Students in Autumn 1 and 2 will develop their general musicianship through a variety of

performance activities. Students will learn about the structure and function of the recording and

performance industry. Students will also learn how to set up and use a PA system, and learn some

basic recording skills.

Students in Spring 1 and 2 will further develop their general musicianship through working in a

band situation. Students will learn to improvise using Blues styles. Students will also undertake a

formal performance assessment as a soloist.

Students in Summer 1 and 2 will develop their awareness of recording and the music industry by

producing a charity recording of their own. They will begin to determine their own level of

musicianship and select their own course of development in preparation for the BTEC Unit 6.

assessed

Students are assessed through ongoing performances and written work using GCSE-style grading

levels, with reference to the BTEC assessment system.

Year: 10

Overview Students in Year 10 will follow the BTEC Performing Arts curriculum, specialising as a musician in

their own style and developing their skills in a personalised and self determined process.

Break down by term Students in Autumn 1 and 2 learn about a variety of different musical styles and perform songs as

a class and as individuals. They learn how to develop their own musical skills through exercise,

warm-up, intelligent practicing and online tuition.

Students in Spring 1 and 2 continue to learn about a variety of different musical styles and

perform songs as a class and as individuals. Students learn to document their musical

development in the form of a diary.

Students in Summer 1 and 2 undertake Unit 6 - Music Skills and Performance - preparing and

completing an audition-style performance and documenting the process.

assessed

Pupils are assessed through BTEC Performing Arts Unit 6 - personal organisation, performance, self-

assessment, documentation and musical development.

Overview Students in Year 10 will follow the BTEC Performing Arts curriculum, specialising as a musician or in

a theatre technical role. They will develop their skills in a personalised and self-determined

process.

Break down by term Students in Autumn 1 and 2 complete Unit 2 by organising and participating in a public

performance event in the form of a school concert.

Students in Spring 1 and 2 complete Unit 1 by preparing a final audition piece either through

musical performance or as a practical demonstration in response to an external stimulus.

Students in Summer 1 complete the recording and written components of Unit 1.

How will students be

assessed

Pupils are assessed internally for Unit 2 documenting and contributions to the performance. Unit 1

is assessed externally through a recorded (video) performance/presentation and a written

response to the stimulus.

Overview Students in Year 7 will be introduced a wide range of sports that they may have never

experienced before. This is the start of a broad by challenging curriculum. In particular pupils will

find themselves in mixed gender groups, playing for teams and participating in competitive

situations.
