Twenty years as a farm and education center has been quite an extraordinary journey. From our infancy we have worked diligently to provide service to the planet and people. In our initial years, we struggled to build our knowledge of place and rhythm in tune with the land and seasons of Dorchester. Through our work, we learned that patience and persistence create the wealth and abundance we seek. By investing in people and place we are growing the roots that lead to fruition. For the next twenty years we plan to chart a direct course and dig deep/row hard to reach our goals as stewards of the land and communitarians. In our 21st year, we are delighted to celebrate our accomplishments and also to embrace the challenges of the future. As we mature, we have the infrastructure and experience necessary to provide imperative support to a widening audience. In 2017 our theme was “Refining the Vision for the Next Twenty Years”.

By building from the backbone of the homestead on Streeter Mountain, we are weaving and evolving a role into the fabric of the region’s culture.

The Dorchester Trails initiative is in full swing. Our commitment to provide accessible recreation for residents and visitors to the area fits perfectly with our mission of providing service to the region. In addition to the increased tourist revenue, trails improve the vibrancy of our lives and health of the community.

Trails provide a portal of access to nature and exercise for skiers, hikers, bikers and snowshoers. The addition of Greg Di Santo’s expertise and work ethic as a trail builder has provided both the knowledge and tenacity to create a professional network on the property. Our trail work has already received substantial positive response from riders and the media. By partnering with Pemi Baker Mountain Bike Association members we hope to create multiple riding locations for all abilities in the area.

The Mission of D Acres is to improve the human relationship with the rural New England landscape through farm-based research, education, and demonstration of sustainable farming, cooperative community, and healthy living.

We are collaborating with a neighboring landowner to create access to a network for skiing and biking that puts Dorchester on the map as a recreational destination. In addition we hope to create a map and guide for the Baker River region that highlights the world class rock climbing, hiking, skiing, boating and biking opportunities within our watershed.

Over the last three years we have increased youth programming at D Acres. Onsite events such as Kids Days as well as frequent school group tours and youthwork parties are highlights of our weeks. Our involvement at the public schools has also grown. This spring at Canaan Elementary we helped coordinate a 2nd annual spring garden kick off day and gifted 104 egg laying chickens to students of the school. D Acres potatoes and squash were featured items in the cafeteria. This year we are looking to expand composting and trails at Canaan as well as provide support for programs at Russell Elementary in Rumney. Our goal is to develop a K-12 curricula which provides experiential food, ecological, sustainable and place based education formed from our homestead experiences.

The 2017 staff is a diverse blend of hard working and dedicated individuals. Maureen has provided wholesome hospitality to our homestead. Her consistent efforts in marketing, educational programming, grant writing and as public school liaison are an investment reaping benefits. Michelle and her daughter Aster provide a determined food and herb production team. The immense volume of canned peaches, tomatoes and apples attest to her efforts in the kitchen. Will has contributed by carrying the garden, pig, dish, handyman chores through the summer. By combining the onsite infrastructure and wisdom of D Acres with eager and enthusiastic staff, we maximized our capacity this growing season.

We recognize the various diverse contributions that build a community project, and through the Many Hands Program we have provided an inclusive portal for support and participation at D Acres. We would like the participants, partners and supporters of D Acres and the communityof permaculture to be recognized without strict monetary commitment. Our hope is that volunteers, donors, and the participants can harmonize as we provide organizational support.

Instead of monthly renewals for memberships, we will send a once-a-year letter, asking for funds and volunteer participation for the year. Any monetary contribution is appreciated.

Volunteers are needed for committee work, administrative, construction, and gardening assistance. But there are many other projects like organizing the library, harvesting, and distributing flyers.

To all of our Many Hands particpants, whether a donor, volunteer, onsite participant, or organizational collaborator/sponsor, we heartily thank you. And we hope to see Many more Hands involved in 2018!

In 2018 we are embarking on the next 20 years. Dunstan and his wife Allie are returning to the area. We are also hopeful to partner with a couple arriving from the mountains of North Carolina with substantial gardening experience.

Onsite we continue to grapple with our housing needs. Bree, Sawyer and Isla have moved up the road to the Dorchester Town Center and the Red house is being prepared for visitor, residential, retail, and event utilization. The PSU Tiny House has been tested so we are excited to expand the concept of insu-lated 4 season sleeping quarters for staff.

This coming year we hope to cultivate the possibilities of blending talented personnel as plans for a plant nursery and a food truck manifest. We also plan to expand our parking lot, build a bike skills area and pump track to support our trail efforts. These diverse innovations are investments that will ensure the sustainability of the people and operations at D Acres.

D Acres is a dynamic organization which continues to grow and serve this region. This year the costs of doing business were especially high as we in-vested in new personnel, equipment repairs and trail construction. We work diligently to meet our costs but these investments for the community neces-sitate public support. Momentum is growing to help us push ahead to meet the challenges we face. Our goal to continue to thrive for the next 20 years and beyond needs YOUR participation. We appreciate all your generous sup-port. Contributions are encouraged whether it be by being active attendees at events or donations. We are always interested in potential Board and volun-teer participants from the community. :)
