The Adopt-a-Scientist volunteer program was first implemented in Sarnia schools in 1996 under the wing of the Science Education Partnership (SEP). The SEP is a unique collaboration between the St. Clair Catholic District School Board, the Lambton Kent District School Board and local businesses and industries, including Imperial. Volunteers are “adopted” by elementary classrooms to lend their scientific expertise through hands-on, curriculum-linked, demonstrations. Of Adopt-a- Scientist program’s 22 volunteers, many are Imperial retirees and over the last several years, including in 2016, the Imperial Foundation has contributed $7,000 to the program annually. In the community Wheels to Lambton Imperial is a supporter of the Wheels to Lambton transportation initiative, which was launched on April 1, 2016. The program is the result of a collaboration facilitated by the Visions of Harmony organization to help students from Aamjiwnaang First Nation and Walpole Island First Nation get to and from Lambton College each day. The Imperial Foundation made a $40,000 contribution for the purchase of the program’s two shuttle vans. Inn of the Good Shepherd Since 2012, Imperial Sarnia has contributed more than $50,000 in canned goods and donations to The Inn of the Good Shepherd through the CANstruction team build competition. Imperial’s canned structure in 2016 – Take a Bite Out of Hunger – was voted by the public as the competition’s People Choice Award winner. Imperial has also provided contributions and volunteers to the Inn Out of the Cold supper since 2010, and has made contributions each of the last nine summers to help client children attend a weekend Scout camp in Grand Bend. Environment

Meet the manager

Imperial | Neighbour news | Sarnia site | 2016Imperial | Neighbour news | Sarnia site | 2016

Our customers, shareholders, the public and employees expect us to meet the demand for energy in an environmentally responsible manner. This drives us to continuously pursue technologies and practices that reduce our impact on the land, water and air.

Imperial’s goal is to achieve excellent environmental performance and minimize our environmental footprint to “Protect tomorrow. Today.” This philosophy guides our management processes for continuously improving environmental performance.

In Sarnia, the elimination of coke burning, the operation of our tail-gas cleanup unit since 2009 and increased utilization of our cogeneration plant have contributed to reductions in emissions. Imperial Sarnia has also reduced fugitive benzene emissions by about 88 percent since 1994. Fugitive emissions are small air emissions that are inherent to any production process. The company employs advanced infrared imaging devices to monitor its plant for emissions and make any necessary repairs.

Rohan Davis

Among recent arrivals at Imperial Sarnia in late 2016 is refinery manager Rohan Davis, a longtime ExxonMobil employee from Melbourne, Australia.

Davis brings 20 years of experience in ExxonMobil’s global refining and supply organization to his new post following tenures in Australia, Singapore, Virginia and more recently in Houston.

“I am looking forward to meeting our many employees here in Sarnia, getting to know the community and working together to build a strong,

sustainable business,” said Davis. “My family is also very excited about our recent move to Sarnia.”

Davis and Imperial chemical plant manager Dave Luecke, who arrived in Sarnia in early 2015, say management and all employees are committed to doing their utmost to ensure safe and reliable operations that protect the environment.

“As an operating site, these are the things that are within our control and they will continue to be the areas that we focus on,” said Davis.

Responsible CareImperial Chemicals completed is seventh Responsible Care verification in the summer of 2016. The external verification is an important part of the Responsible Care process and it involves bringing in an independent external team of industry experts, representatives of the public and representatives of the local community. The three-day initiative occurs every three years, during which the company’s implementation of the Responsible Care codes of practice are verified. Emergency procedures and contactsShould an incident occur at Imperial Sarnia Site, well-defined plans and emergency response capabilities are in place, which include access to specialized equipment and trained personnel. Our emergency teams also conduct regular drills and simulations to ensure we are always ready to respond.

What it means when you hear testing of our alarmsOur emergency warning system consists of a series of air horn alarms to alert our personnel of potential emergencies at the site. Alarms are tested every Monday at 12:30 p.m.

If you hear the site’s alarm sound outside of the testing period, tune in to the local radio station. You can also call the Imperial information line at 519-339-2111 or the CAER industry update line at 1-855-472-7642.

Location of municipal sirensThere are four municipal sirens in the south end of Sarnia, one in Point Edward, three in Aamjiwnaang and two in Corunna. If you hear the municipal sirens, you can tune in to the local radio stations for updates.

Shelter in placeIn the event of instructions from municipal emergency responders to shelter in place, officials recommend the public should “shelter, shut and listen.” The Community Awareness Emergency Response (CAER) organization, which Imperial is a member of, advises that residents should do the following when sheltering in place: stay inside; close all windows and secure doors; turn off ventilation systems, i.e., furnace or air conditioner; have a battery operated radio for emergencies and tune in to local radio stations for information. Members of the public can also subscribe to the City of Sarnia’s MyCNN emergency notification system www.caer.ca/everbridge to receive information.

Safety momentwith Shawn Zettel, Safety group leader, Imperial Sarnia“Safety and health are core values at Imperial and our mantra that Nobody gets hurt permeates our workplace. All levels of the organization, from employees to contractors, work diligently to achieve that goal. We are proud that Imperial Sarnia site in late 2016 is on track to have the best

safety performance in site history. Personnel are leveraging an established Loss Prevention System to identify and manage risks and Imperial Sarnia is an active collaborator with other industry members to share best practices, successes and learnings. We also focus on off-the-job safety and encourage employees to discuss topics like fire safety; general wellness; sun safety; and insect safety with family and friends in the community.”
