We invest in the well-being of our communities by lending a hand to organizations dedicated to making a difference and improving the overall quality of life.

As 2012 comes to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to update the community on some of the key activities that have taken place throughout the year. Keeping the communities in which we operate informed is part of being a good neighbour and important to us at NOVA Chemicals.

In the last half of 2011 we began discussing with the community and other key stakeholders our plans to secure new sources of feedstock for the Corunna Site, the required modification of the facility (Corunna Revamp Project) and the potential for future growth opportunities of our business in the Sarnia-Lambton region.

To date, we have received National Energy Board approval to proceed with the Genesis Pipeline Extension project. By Fall of 2013 we expect to begin consuming ethane from the Marcellus Shale basin. Approval has been received from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment for the required permit changes for this project. Construction began in September and will continue throughout the new year.

I am also pleased to share that in September, each of our sites were assessed and NOVA Chemicals was successfully re-verified as a Responsible Care® company. The Chemistry Industry Association (CIAC) performed a detailed evaluation of our programs, procedures and

On November 28th we look forward to hosting a Community Open House from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the Corunna Legion. This will provide an opportunity to share project updates and have open dialogue with our community members.

The 7th annual Capstone competition was held at Western’s Research Park in Sarnia-Lambton on March 23rd. 14 teams of students presented their project designs to volunteer judges, fellow students, faculty, and attendees from local industries and government. In conjunction with a monetary donation, we are pleased to be able to participate by sending a valued NOVA employee to sit on the panel of judges.

Lambton College Fire School DonationNOVA Chemicals’ donation of $300,000 in support of the Lambton College Inspiring the Future Fundraising Campaign was recognized at the May 10th campaign wrap-up celebration held at the Fire and Public Safety Centre of Excellence.

We are very pleased to support Lambton College, and the Sarnia-Lambton community as a whole through our donation to the new, state of the art fire and public safety teaching facility. Our investment will assist in acquiring modern simulation equipment and props for simulation exercises at the fire school. NOVA Chemicals has a long standing

partnership with the college and we are confident this investment will assist in providing highly skilled graduates that will serve both local industry and the public safety level of preparedness.

On June 5th, NOVA Chemicals attended the Sarnia-Lambton Bike Summit at the Lambton Inn. Bluewater Trails is advocating for a Bike Friendly Sarnia-Lambton and have partnered with Share the Road Cycling Coalition. We were pleased to be able to make a monetary donation as well as over 200 bicycle bells and lights. Since the summit, the Bike Friendly Healthy Community Fund grant has been approved and will provide $22,400.00 to support this Bike Friendly project.

On July 20th NOVA Chemicals joined the YMCA of Sarnia-Lambton in its vision to provide healthy communities. Through its donation of $10,000, NOVA Chemicals is the latest donor to support the YMCA Annual Strong Kids Campaign. The campaign raises funds to allow children, families and individuals a chance to experience YMCA programs and services, regardless of their ability to pay.

June 7th, we were pleased to announce our $20,000 donation to the St. Clair Township Fire Department. The donation will assist with the implementation of the FM Alert system in St. Clair Township by enabling the Fire Department to continue to subsidize the units so that community members can purchase the devices at a nominal cost. The safety and well-being of our communities is of the utmost importance. We share the township’s goal of ensuring that the residents of St. Clair Township stay safe during emergencies by keeping connected and informed at all times.

NOVA Chemicals’ Corunna site had the pleasure of hosting a visit from Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development and Innovation Brad Duguid on June 25th.

The Minister, his staff, and members of the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC), were in Sarnia to hear about the chemistry sector’s potential to attract significant investment to the region over the next decade. NOVA Chemicals’ growth strategy, NOVA 2020 and access to the natural gas liquids (NGL’s) feedstock were of particular interest to the Minister.

The 2012 United Way Campaign at NOVA Chemicals kicked off on September 4th and ran through to October 4th. Site participation was outstanding. Including the company’s matching dollars, over $208,000 was raised over the course of the campaign. This is an almost $33,000 increase in donations from last year.

The national United Way organization—United Way Centraide Canada, has honoured NOVA Chemicals with their “Thanks a Million” award for NOVA’s overall contributions in 2011. This prestigious award is presented to Canadian corporations, employers and labour organizations that, together with their employees, have facilitated raising $1 million or more in support of Canadian

United Way organizations.

This is a tremendous milestone for NOVA Chemicals and our employees and a real testament to the Spirit of Community that is clearly alive and well in support of United Way, our charity of choice, across our sites. It is only through your generous financial support and participation that we can achieve such an outstanding result—thus creating opportunities for a better life for everyone in our communities. With our collective support, United Way continues to focus on helping people move from poverty to possibility; ensuring healthy people, strong communities; and helping kids be all that they can be.

Going Forward

In 2011, NOVA Chemicals announced a 10-year asset strategy referred to as “NOVA 2020” to capitalize on emerging feedstock opportunities and growing North American polyethylene demand. To date we have received approval from the National Energy Board to proceed with the Genesis Pipeline Extension project. This project includes reconverting and extending one of the Genesis Pipelines (Genesis is a wholly owned subsidiary of NOVA Chemicals). This project will enable our Corunna facility to receive ethane from the Marcellus Shale basin.

Revamping our Corunna site allows us to monetize our access to cost-competitive feedstock in the eastern production region. A proposed expansion of ethylene capacity at this facility will support our polyethylene growth strategy, while using additional cost-competitive feedstock.

These projects will be implemented in a phased approach. Phase 1 is focused on the conversion of the Corunna facility

to utilize up to 100% NGL feedstock. We expect to begin consuming ethane from the Marcellus Shale basin beginning in Fall 2013, with completion of the project in early 2014. Phase 2 will explore an expansion of the Corunna site in order to increase ethylene capacity to match the business requirements for a proposed new polyethylene facility.

At this time, Phase 1—Corunna Revamp, has full Board of Directors’ funding approval of approximately $250 million, advancing the Corunna Revamp project into the implementation stage. Phase 2—Corunna Expansion and potential new facility build; has the Board of Directors’ support and approval to provide the funding necessary to complete further investigation work. As always, for the most current information about NOVA 2020, visit the project website: http://iww.novachem.com/public/NOVA2020/Nova2020.htm

NOVA Chemicals was one of several companies who conducted a chemical emergency response/TransCAER learning session held in London, Ontario on June 15th and 16th. The City of London’s Emergency Management team was instrumental in organizing the classroom event, attracting attendees from as far away as Barrie and Amherstburg.

The city and surrounding areas were well represented by firefighters, paramedics, police, RCMP, emergency preparedness administrators and several private businesses. These people had the opportunity to talk with chemical industry

TRANSCAER NOVA ChemicalsRe-verifiedIn September, the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC) successfully re-verified Responsible Care at all of the NOVA Chemicals’ facilities across Canada. The assessment was carried out by a three-member CIAC appointed re-verification team, augmented by a community member of Sarnia-Lambton who was selected by the Bluewater Community Advisory Panel (BCAP). The team visited our region, reviewed company policies and processes and conducted interviews with employees, leadership and members of the neighbouring communities.
