Hunter College men’s volleyball concluded one of the most successful seasons in school history this year, winning the CUNYAC Championship for the first time since 2008.
The Hawks posted a 24-10 overall record, while going 15-1 in conference play. The squad lost the last match of the regular season after going on a 15-match conference win streak.
Hunter kicked off the season strong, winning five of their first six matches. The team entered the American College Volleyball Association rankings on Feb. 3, ranking 15th among the top teams in the nation.
The Hawks continued to have a strong February, getting wins over Staten Island, CCNY, New Jersey City University, Baruch, Lehman and York. The team hit a small skid with three-straight losses at the Juniata Invitational, two against teams ranked in the top-four in the country, but bounced back by winning six-straight.
After winning every conference match of the season, the Hawks fell in a five-set thriller to Baruch to close regular-season play.
As the #2 seed in the CUNYAC Tournament, the Hawks got wins against John Jay and Brooklyn College to advance to the championship finals against Baruch.
In the finals, Hunter was able to overtake the Bearcats in five sets and win the team’s 15th CUNYAC Championship. Steven Tarquinio was named the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while Joseph Muir and Ben Crusinberry were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Hawks ended the 2016 season with a three-set loss to Wentworth in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Ben Cassidy and Crusinberry led in the match with seven kills each.
First-year head coach James Pompeo was named the CUNYAC Coach of the Year, while Muir took home Libero of the Year honors. Crusinberry, Tarquinio and Nicolas Sanchez were placed on the All-Star First-Team and Blake Hogan garnered All-Star Second-Team honors. Austen Rerick was a member of the Sportsmanship Team.
