    Athlete LeadershipPrograms (ALPs)

Empowering our athletes to beleaders in their communities

    What is ALPs?

Athlete Leadership Programs (ALPs) provides training

for athletes who wish to expand their role in SpecialOlympics Missouri beyond the eld of competition.

For that reason, within ALPs, SOMO athletes willnow be referred to as “athlete-leaders” instead of just“athletes.”

On the eld of competition, our athletes learn howto achieve success, joy and acceptance. Athlete Leader-ship Programs teach them how to achieve those samegoals and feel just as empowered while o the eld ofcompetition as respected leaders and spokespeople intheir communities.

Throughout Special Olympics, athlete-leaders takeon roles and responsibilities from many dierent ALPs

initiatives. They can work as employees of SpecialOlympics programs, speak on behalf of SOMO as GlobaMessengers, serve as coaches and volunteers, ociatecompetitions and represent other athletes and leadersas part of the SOMO Input Council.
