The Environment and Healthy Living

It’s important to know how to protect your own health, and how to support others in taking care of themselves. Being aware of the environmental impact of our everyday behavior, routines and habits is a responsibility youth take very seriously. Through experiential and outdoor educational programming, 4-H offers opportunities for youth to:

• Be stewards of the environment and develop sustainable solutions• Take care of themselves and others• Learn positive ways to stay healthy and active• Make informed choices about their health and the health of the planet• Dig in and get their hands dirty!

Youth will inherit the environmental problems of today, and have already developed many of the solutions for tomorrow.

We are so excited to host 4-H volunteer leaders and staff from across Canada at the 2016 4-H Canada Leadership Summit. At this year’s summit, we are exploring programming through our Environment & Healthy Living Pillar.

Key Information

Going Green

This is a “green” event. We will be as paperless as possible during the Summit.

We will also be participating in the Green Stay Sustainability program at the Delta hotel which means

that a tree will be planted in your name by forgoing some of the housekeeping services.

Note: if you are staying four nights, you will receive housekeeping services after the 3rd day as per their

service standard. Dial 0 if you would like to get fresh towels or toiletries at any time.

Flights and Airport Arrivals

Please remember to check-in 24 hours in advance on the Air Canada or WestJet site using your 6 digit alphanumeric code on your flight itinerary next to the

flight details.

4-H Canada staff will be coordinating shuttle buses from the airport to the hotel. When you arrive at the airport, look out for 4-H staff to direct you to the shuttle. We’ll be

well-branded and marked in GREEN!

Baggage fees of $25 are the responsibility of the individual participant and will be charged at check-in time.

Snowshoeing in Gatineau Park

On February 20, during working group meetings, we are offering an optional

activity for those participants not involved in meetings.

Please note that breakfasts will not be included in the Summit this year.

Lorna Kotz Actively Involved with 4-H for 25 Years | Community Leader

Farm and Home Safety Workshop

Come learn about programming and resources available with the

4-H BC Farm and Home Safety Program.This educational program was developed

to reduce the risk of accidents faced by children on BC farms, ranches and in rural communities. This session includes a fun

activity to present at club level.

Lorna Kotz has worked with all levels of the program, including being a club leader, District resource person and Regional and Provincial Council representation. Farm safety is one element she likes to emphasize and she has been on the 4-H BC Farm and Home Safety Committee for a number of years. Through the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA), Lorna was introduced to the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day Program and will share these resources with 4-H Canada’s Leadership Summit guests.

How can we engage today’s youth to effect positive social change? Keynote speaker Lisa

Glithero will be sharing her expertise and insights on responding to a complex, rapidly

changing and unpredictable world with sustainable practices.

Environmental educator and founder of the EYES (Education, Youth, Environment, Sustainability) Project, Lisa Glithero sets out to inspire individuals and organizations alike to commit to greener practices at home and in the workplace.

Heather Hargrave Industry and Member Relations Coordinator, Farm and Food Care

This workshop will provide tips and tricks on having conversations with Canadians about

food and farming, with a focus on how to answer difficult questions. 4-H members and

leaders can prepare themselves on discussing the challenges those in agriculture face

through a candid talk with Farm and Food Care’s Heather Hargrave.

Proudly Presenting Agriculture Workshop

Hargrave’s family owns and operates a cow-calf purebred Angus operation in Ontario which she has been involved with her entire life. Heather attended the Ontario Agricultural College at the University of Guelph and in 2007 graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Agricultural Business. In 2006 she joined the Farm & Food Care team. She is also a recent graduate of the Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program (AALP). Heather is a volunteer and beef club leader with 4-H Ontario.

Kirsten Holt Director, National Farm Portfolio, the Co-operators

Explore risk management options, how insurance is used to transfer risk, what causes

losses on farms, what farmers can do to reduce risk and how we can work together to reduce

the chance of a loss.

As a general leader/project leader for the Big River 4-H Multiple Club and North West Leader for the Saskatchewan 4-H Board of Directors, Clint is able to couple his passion for nature with community service.

Ginny Smith has worked in the 4-H Branch of Alberta Agriculture & Forestry for 12 years and became the 4-H Specialist for the Southern Region in 2013. Her key program responsibilities include the Provincial 4-H Dairy Show and the Pheasant project. Ginny is also an active volunteer with the Green Certificate and Classroom Ag Programs .

From record keeping, financial management and literacy, join 4-H SK and 4-H NS as they share some of the resources that they offer to help develop money savvy youth.

It’s All About the $$$ Financial Literacy Workshop

Karrie Watson was a member of 4-H for 10 years in the Light Horse project. She’s been with the 4-H Saskatchewan Provincial Office for 4 years, beginning as a Regional 4-H Specialist, then taking the position as Executive Administrator in 2014. For Karrie, 4-H is the best program available to youth today as it teaches life skills,

not just academics.

Laurie Sandeson 4-H NS

Laurie Sandeson has been working in the agricultural sector for over 27 years. She is the current Provincial 4-H Coordinator for the Nova Scotia Dept of Agriculture. In addition, she is the Coordinator of Innovation for the Department. Laurie is a former 4-H member, leader and is currently a 4-H parent.

Lindsey Verhaeghe has been developing and implementing youth education programs for over a decade. Growing up on a cattle ranch in southern Alberta instilled a passion for agriculture in Lindsey. Lindsey works for Agrium Inc. in Calgary, AB to lead their Corporate Social Responsibility efforts related to youth education and sustainable agriculture. Lindsey is proud to be a past 4-H member and

4-H public speaking judge.

Emily Brown Program Manager, 4-H Canada

everything – including, 4-H projects. Explore different apps that, in particular,

enhance your experience and learn about the environment, the great outdoors, and

to generally, “Learn To Do By Doing.”

With a 4-H history that stretches back nearly 20 years, Emily is what the 4-H community fondly calls a ‘lifer.’ Hailing from Prince Edward Island, Emily is a student of the ‘Learn To Do By Doing’ mantra and joined the 4-H movement at the age of eight. As the Administrative Director for 4-H PEI for several years, Emily has created and implemented some truly engaging, innovative, and high-quality youth programming. She now serves with the 4-H Canada team as Program Manager, bringing along her leadership abilities, enthusiasm and laid-back island charm!

He accepted the position of Executive Director of the Manitoba 4-H Council

For over twenty years, Leanne has been building and nurturing individuals, teams, and communities to promote and support leadership and youth development through 4-H, farm safety, health education and community wellness. Her roots in 4-H run deep; she was a nine year member in a multipurpose and beef club, a 4-H Ambassador and

a 4-H leader.

Marianne Fallis4-H ON

Marianne joined the 4-H Ontario staff team in 2007 and is now the Senior Manager of Programming. She is passionate about providing young people with opportunities to engage in programming that helps them reach heights they didn’t think possible. In her spare time she volunteers with the Sunrise Therapeutic Riding program, creatively meditates through Zentagles or hunkers down with a

good book.

Karrie Watson4-H SK

Karrie Watson has been with the 4-H Saskatchewan Provincial Office for 4 years, beginning as a Regional 4-H Specialist, then taking the position as Executive Administrator in 2014. She believes that 4-H is the best program available to youth today as it teaches life skills, not just academics. It’s a program that brings families and communities together and holds on to a value system that many people do not have the opportunity to

experience today.

Girls and women: be proud of who you are, how you look, and what you know! Learn about nutrition, exercise, hair, make-up,

spirituality and more in this workshop. Explore ways to have these conversations with 4-H

Tammy has a long history with the 4-H organization. She became a volunteer with 4-H Ontario and is now leading clubs in Brant County. Tammy has served on both the 4-H Canada and Ontario 4-H Council boards of directors, currently serving as president of the Ontario 4-H Council Board of Directors. At the national level, she played a key role in organizing 100th Anniversary celebrations.

Anne BowkerAssociate Professor, Carleton University

This workshop focuses on understanding positive youth development (PYD) from the

perspective of developmental psychology research. It will include some preliminary

results of a pilot study of PYD in 4-H youth in Ontario and Manitoba.

Anne Bowker is an associate professor of psychology at Carleton University, with over 15 years of experience studying children and youth in the Ottawa area. Her research focuses on involvement in extra-curricular activities and its impact on positive youth development. She is particularly interested in parent and peer relationships and the role that they play in facilitating youth activity involvement.

ParticipACTION is helping teens make the right move towards a life that includes

physical activity. The ParticipACTION Teen Challenge works to get teens moving

across the country and allows them to come up with innovative ways to get active.

In this lively, interactive session, volunteer leaders from 4-H Alberta will showcase the unique ways they have incorporated Creative Arts into their 4-H clubs. Highlighted projects include Sewing, Woodworking, Geocatching, outdoor adventures and the extremely

unique performing arts Busking project.

Thinking Outside the BoxCreative Arts Workshop

Caroline Boddy fell in love with 4-H and the many life lessons that it can bring at a young age. She stayed a member right up until she was 21 in which she became a leader shortly after. Having a successful and joyful 4-H career herself she wanted to help create an amazing experience for future 4-H’ers. Now, Caroline has approximately 21 years of being a 4-H leader under her belt and has seen many kids get involved with 4-H.

Jacky Vang is a relatively new leader from Crossfield, Alberta having taken over the General Leader position 3 years ago for the Helping Hands 4-H Multi Club. As a leader, she oversees a Geocaching Project, a Sewing Project and a Creative Opportunities Photography project. When she is not involved with 4-H, Jacky is a full time bus driver as well as a resource assistant at the local high school. She and her

husband have 2 children - Reegan 14 and Mitchell 12.

Rose has 29 years experience working in the agriculture industry. In 1997, she joined Agrium as an Advertising Manager. Since then, she has held the positions of Employee and Customer Relations Leader; and Specialist, Corporate Responsibility. In her current role as Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility, she is responsible for Community Investments, Sponsorships, External Communication Strategy and Branding, Stakeholder Engagement and

Sustainability Reporting.

Lindsey Verhaeghe has been developing and implementing youth education programs for over a decade. Growing up on a cattle ranch in southern Alberta instilled a passion for agriculture in Lindsey. After graduating with a degree in Communications, Lindsey dedicated her career towards agriculture education. In 2009, she joined Agrium Inc. in Calgary, AB to lead their Corporate Social Responsibility efforts related to youth education and sustainable agriculture.Lindsey is proud to be a past 4-H member and
