potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action & leadership of trained volunteers.
2016– 2017 Year in Review
Dear JLE-NS Members,
We are truly a group of women who know how to get things done. Thanks to you all, we have continued to sup-
port our revitalized Thrift House, Fitting Futures, Baby Steps, Kitchen Tour and numerous Done In A Day pro-
jects. I cannot thank you enough for the countless hours that you have given to our league.
THANK YOU!!
It has been my pleasure and honor to have served as your President this year. I thank all of you for your dedica-
tion to our league, your tremendous support of me as your President and your continued commitment to our
community and those in need. I want you to remember that being a league member is not just about what we
can do for other people, it is also about what you get out of the league. In all my years of league membership I
have been touched and guided by many women that I cherish as friends and mentors. I give my best wishes to
Emily Link, Allie Paus and our incoming leadership team as they continue to lead our continued growth and
transformation.
Yours in voluntarism,
Lisa

2016- 2017 JLE-NS President
A Message from the President
In our 90 + year history, JLE-NS has contributed over $3.2 million to the community through projects and programs. This year,
we conducted the following outreach programs: Baby Steps, Fitting Futures, Scholarships and Grants, and Thrift House as
well as four other “done in a day” projects.
Fitting Futures™ builds confidence and boosts careers of financially challenged women by offering free interview attire
and related services.
Baby Steps is an educational baby shower for low-income expectant mothers in need.
Done in a Day allowed members to help with numerous additional community projects
Scholarships and Grants provide financial assistance for college students and local non-profits.
Thrift House is a resale shop in Evanston, offering affordable, gently used clothing and household items since 1940.
Thrift House also enables clients of our partner non-profits to shop for needed items at no charge.
Making Positive Community Impact
Our bright, cheerful, fun, and charming space continues to allow the league to strengthen its
community focus on job readiness. The Thrift House provides an environment for the clients of
Fitting Futures to feel empowered and special while receiving career focused attire and
accessories.
JLE–NS also continued supporting our community partners with donations of useful goods. This
included: Connections for the Homeless - Men's and Women's clothing as well as hats, gloves,
socks and boots (56 bags and 5 boxes) Evanston School Children's Clothing Association (ESCCA) -
12 Large bags donated, Vineyard Christian Church (24 bags), Deacons Closet (6 bags), Dreams
Delivered (22 prom dresses) Mary Lou's Place 110 Vouchers given.
The Fitting Futures Committee partnered with seven agencies, and hosted ten fittings serving
more than 50 clients. Through fittings 480 clothing and accessories were distributed with more
than 30 JLE-NS members volunteering during fittings. Fitting Futures have a positive “shopping”
experience in the beautifully remodeled Thrift House and the revamped space better supports our
Fitting Futures projects. The store’s Career Corner is dedicated to Fitting Futures inventory and
the proceeds go directly back to the committee. This year more than $1,400 will go back to the
committee from Career Corner to help fund their needs.
The Kitchen Tour Committee hosted our 7th annual Designer Kitchens of the North Shore Kitchen
Tour, grossing more than $34,000. The tour welcomed well over 400 guests, engaged 40 JLE-NS
volunteers and included five stunning kitchens from Evanston to Winnetka. Kitchens were spon-
sored by Morgante Wilson Architects, Normandy Remodeling, and Benvenuti and Stein, all of
whom were a returning sponsors and welcomed two new kitchen sponsors, A. Perry Homes, and
DG Design Kitchen & Bath. The Kitchen Tour partnered with Sheridan Road as Media Sponsor for
the 7th consecutive year.
The Recruitment Committee utilized print materials, local events, local press and expanded social
media use to promote three Open Houses at the Winnetka Community house and four recruit-
ment socials in the community through which they welcomed more than 50 people to their
events, leading to a New Member class of 6 amazingly talented and gifted volunteers!
New Members rallied together to put on a fabulous Trivia Night attended by approximately 200
guest and raising almost $14,000 providing $5,000 towards the Baby Steps Project.
The New Members hosted a beautiful baby shower for 15 at risk moms at Evanston Hospital in
April. Moms were showered with goodie bags and essential gifts for a new baby while also provid-
ing an educational component. Five speakers covered topics including; basic baby health, car
seat safety, soothing infants, breastfeeding and post partum depression.
Done in a Day had a very busy year! The DIAD conducted numerous community outreach projects
this year. Members volunteered in November to sort books at Bernie’s Book Bank. In March
members volunteered at The Infant Welfare Society of Evanston as part of their Read to Succeed
Program. The program that had the most impact was Purses with a Purpose where 286 purses
were collected, filled with personal items and vouchers to Thrift House, and distributed to five
different agencies.
Scholarships and Grants provided $3,000 in grants. Grants were to Have Dreams. Josselyn
Center, Special Gift Theater, Uweza Foundation and Cord USA.. Scholarships were provided to
high school seniors as well as a student from Oakton Community College. This was another year
of growth and success for the November Marketplace which raised $1,343.00 and featured
dynamic speaker Maisha Wynn.
The Community Advisor continues to help JLE-NS strengthen their relationships with Grant recipi-
ents and community contacts. More than 20 JLE-NS members received training and reviewed
Chicago Public Schools small classroom grant requests through the Chicago Foundation for Edu-
cation.
