The Knox County Public Schools’ Communications Department worked in collaboration with the

Barbourville Mountain Advocate newspaper to purchase space for seasonal tabloid inserts into the

newspaper.

As Knox County’s oldest distributed weekly newspaper, KCPS decided in 2014-2015 to return to a print

medium four times per year to share good news and success stories from our school district. Building

on past issues during the 1990’s and early 2000’s, the print insert was re-introduced to the citizens of

Knox County.

Because of social media and an existing partnership to provide a Newspapers in Education page each

week in the Advocate, the four times per year print was determined to be the best to provide additional

news to readers beyond what has already appeared.

A Summer of Learning for Six Rising Seniors Knox County’s Governor’s Scholars Announced School might be out for the summer, but learning is only

beginning for six rising high school seniors. Rhea Carter, Shelby

Green, Jaykob Hubbard, Brayden Imel, Enrica Jackson and Clay

Sprinkles will spend part of their summer on one of

three university campuses as they participate in the state’s most

prestigious summer program.

The Governor’s Scholars Program originated in 1983 as a result

of Kentucky leaders’ concern that the state’s “best and brightest”

were leaving the Commonwealth to pursue educational and ca-

reer opportunities elsewhere without fully understanding the

potential of their talents at home. Students who are selected at-

tend the program without charge.

During the summer program, which will be held on the campus-es of Bellarmine University in Louisville, Morehead State University in Morehead, and Murray State University in Murray, students will participate in a variety of educational studies including:

Focus Area: a “major” subject of study, assigned according to

scholar preference as indicated on the application.

General Studies: an area of study assigned by staff to challenge the scholars. Courses frequently include service-learning compo-nents in the community.

Seminar: a discussion-based small group session. Emphasis is

placed on respectful debate and discussion. Scholars are encouraged to ask probing questions.

KCMS Students selected for

Roger’s Explorers Program

The Rogers Explorers program is an intensive three-day, two-

night program focused on cultivating skills in leadership, tech-

nology, math, science, and community service. It is developed,

coordinated, and supervised by The Center for Rural Develop-

ment in partnership with University of the Cumberlands, Lind-

sey Wilson College, Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead

State University, Asbury University, and The University of

Pikeville.

Knox County Middle School students Corey Bright, Hannah

Daniels, Grace Evans, Dane Imel, Toni McCombs, and Lean-

na Osborne were among 180 students from The Center’s 45-

county service area of Southern and Eastern Kentucky selected

to participate in the 2015 Rogers Explorers program.

Activities throughout the program are both educational and

fun. Classroom projects are very hands-on, so do not expect to

be bored! Explorers are able to actively participate in practical

college courses, fine-tune leadership skills, and develop a net-

work of friends and resources throughout the Southern and

Eastern Kentucky region.

Osborne selected for

Roger’s Scholars Program

Addison Osborne, a student at Knox

Central High School, is one of 63 stu-

dents selected to participate in the

2015 Roger’s Scholars Program.

The summer experience provides

leadership and college scholarship

opportunities to help upcoming high

school juniors in Southern and East-

ern Kentucky develop the skills they

need to seize their potential as the

region’s next generation of business and entrepreneurial lead-

ers. During the program, Osborne will receive hands-on in-

structional training from professional experts in a variety of

content areas in addition to learning leadership and team

building skills.

Both the Roger’s Explorers and Roger’s Scholars programs are

coordinated by The Center for Rural Development.

Successful year for Knox Beta

The Knox Central Beta Club is finishing up a successful year of

service after winning first place honors in the county, state, re-

gional, and national Junior American Citizens contest for their

active involvement in community service. The Knox chapter

also received Chapter of Distinction status for the second con-

secutive year. Shown below are Beta members at the May

Excellence in Teaching recipients named

Three Knox County educators joined others from across the

Commonwealth as recipients of 2015 Campbellsville Universi-

ty Excellence in Teaching award.

Kathy Justice, elementary teacher at Lynn Camp, Jennifer

Mills, teacher at Knox County Middle, and Lee Edward Camp-

bell, choir teacher in the Knox County Public Schools, were

selected from among their peers for the recognition.

Campbellsville University began the Excellence in Teaching

(EIT) awards program in 1987. The purpose of the Excellence

in Teaching program is to recognize quality teaching and

learning taking place throughout Kentucky.

Through the awards program, the University honors teachers

in each grade level (pre-school/elementary, middle, and sec-

ondary) selected by their district.

“We are very excited to have these teachers represent Knox

County at the awards program,” said Frank Shelton, who

coordinates the awards locally.

“Knox County had several excellence candidates for the award

this year, which clearly reflects the dedication our teachers

have to students and learning.

“The award calls attention to the fact that teaching is the

profession that creates all others, and it is evident that these

teachers have a positive impact on Knox County’s future gen-

eration.”

The 2015 Excellence in Teaching Program was held on

Saturday, May 16, on the campus of Campbellsville Universi-

ty. Justice, Mills, and Campbell were honored by the Knox

County Board of Education on May 26.

Knox represented at Odyssey World Finals Knox County was once again in the World’s spotlight as two

Knox Odyssey of the Mind teams advanced to center stage in

the annual competition held at Michigan State University.

Girdler Elementary’s Problem

3 team secured their spot to

perform for the World with

a first place win during the lev-

el state competition. Team

members Braxton Chadwell,

Gavin Chadwell, Bobbie Ann

Dunn, Drew Hale, Emily Mills

and Abigail Ward wowed

judges by opening up

‘Pandora’s Box’. In this prob-

lem, the Girdler team put a video game spin on the story of

Pandora’s Box. A gamer character will take on this multi-level

game inspired by the Greek myth. The game included a pro-

logue that depicts the original story of Pandora’s Box, three

characters representing different evils that escaped the box, and

a power meter that represents the gamer character’s health. To

beat the game, the player will advance to the final level where

it will release hope into the world. They are coached by Kelley

Mills and Rita Wood.

Joining the Girdler team in

the spotlight at World Finals

was the Problem 2 team

from Knox Central High

School. Rachel Brown, Am-

ber Gambrel, Tara Garrison,

Madison Hatfield, Adams

Mills, Mary Riley and

Matthew Williams

won third place in the state competition and qualified for a bid

to advance.

Coached by Dutch Endy, the team was challenged to design,

build, and demonstrate various devices that complete specific

tasks – all while being powered by rubber bands. The problem

was entitled “Experiencing Technical Difficulties”, which re-

volved around the theme where technical failures must be re-

solved through completing the tasks. The team received a list

of tasks to choose from including ring a bell, change the word-

ing on something, sound an alarm, move an object, etc. To add

a twist to the problem, there was also a mysterious engineering

character added in.

Citizens in the Tri-County area have voted, and the “Best of

the Best” awards goes to administrators and schools in Knox

County. The annual survey of readers by the Times Tribune

found that Knox County has the best principal, best middle

school, and best high school of those in the newspaper’s distri-

bution area consisting of Knox, Laurel, and Whitley counties.

New “Challenge” not a threat for Knox teams This season’s robotics season in the Knox County Public

Schools brought with it a new challenge for students as they

competed for top honors.

“This year instead of Mars Rover, Project Lead the way has up-

graded to a new design with VEX IQ Challenge,” explained

Jennifer Carey, coordinator for the elementary program.

“Our elementary students have been equipped with a VEX IQ

kit to meet the challenge of creating this new design. Dewitt,

Flat Lick, Girdler and Lynn Camp have stepped up and accept-

ed this engaging, STEM learning enrichment for their gifted

students,” said Carey.

On Saturday, April 25th, the four Knox teams went to the cam-

pus of the University of Kentucky to compete in the state’s first

Vex IQ Challenge. These students built a robot using the VEX

IQ robotics platform to solve an engineering challenge that is

presented in the form of a game. VEX IQ Challenge teams

worked together scoring points in Teamwork Matches, and

also display their robot’s skills individually in driver controlled

and autonomous Skills Challenges.

The new robotics challenge did not pose a threat to the Knox

teams, as all four placed in the top ten with Girder Elementary

taking first place honors.

In addition to building robots, the VEX IQ Challenge encour-

aged students to actively learn about science, technology, engi-

neering and mathematics within a STEM based interview pro-

cess. This process was about the engagement of content

learned throughout the performance task.

The interview students went through was conducted by engi-

neers from Lockheed and Martin, a global security, aerospace,

and information Technology Company, with the majority of

Lockheed Martin's business being with the U.S. Department of

Defense and U.S. federal government agencies. Engineers from

the firm conducted the interview and also volunteered their

time to spending the day at UK mingling, helping, engaging

and advising with the students.

School Bus Safety Tips

Leave plenty of time to safely get to the

bus stop.

Remain alert at all times. Don’t listen to

your MP3 players, text, talk on your cell

phone or play handheld video games

because you won’t be aware of what’s

happening around you.

When waiting for the bus, stay away

from the street. Make sure you are

aware of traffic and follow all traffic

safety rules.

Make sure the driver can see you at all

times by staying 12 giant steps away

from the outside of the bus.

Wait for the bus to come to a complete

stop before you get on or before you

stand up to get off.

Clothes or backpacks should not have

drawstrings, toggles or key chains. They

can get caught on bus handrails and

doors.

Don’t put your head, arms, papers or

anything out the window.
