NALAC Leadership Institute 2015 Guidelines NALAC Leadership Institute The NALAC Leadership Institute (NLI) is a week-long rigorous program in arts management and leadership development that delivers innovative and practical strategies that lead to successful business practices in the arts. The dynamic learning environment cultivates a familiar, inclusive cultural space that provides multiple generations of Latino artists, arts managers and cultural promoters the support, knowledge, and agency to confidently respond to and initiate solutions to complex cultural questions. Applicants to the NLI are accepted from multiple generations of Latino artists, arts managers and cultural promoters in various stages of career development. A group of 15-25 participants will be selected to attend the NLI in San Antonio, TX. NALAC Mission The National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC) is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization exclusively dedicated to the promotion, advancement, development, and cultivation of the Latino arts field. In this capacity, NALAC stimulates and facilitates intergenerational dialogues among disciplines, languages, and traditional and contemporary expressions. Goals Develop core capacities in the areas of arts management, networking, marketing, fund development; Deliver training via interactive group learning, consultations, and leadership simulations; Advance knowledge in the field of Latino artistic expressions, research and policy; Contextualize the frameworks that inform and affect Latino cultural production; Strengthen and expand the NALAC professional network; Promote awareness for planned organizational legacy and artistic/executive succession; Provide effective tools and research that optimize leadership competence; and, Prepare creative, strategic and nimble cultural leaders. Overview Leadership Institute Dates The National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC) will host its 15th Annual Leadership Institute July 13-18, 2015 in San Antonio, Texas. Curriculum The Leadership Institute curriculum is based on the historical overview and analysis of Latino arts and cultures in the U.S., including the vital role of community involvement. This lens provides the framework for all Institute presentations, discussions, and exercises. Class topics include: Advocacy Evaluation Grant Writing Mission & Vision Budgeting Fundraising Management Programming Capacity Building Governance Marketing Strategic Planning Leadership Institute Core Faculty The Institute Faculty consists of nationally recognized professionals and leaders in the arts and cultural field. In addition to the core faculty, the Institute includes several guest faculty members. Detailed bios for core faculty and a listing of guest faculty can be found in the Leadership Institute section of the website at www.nalac.org/nli.

Eligibility Requirements Latino artists, arts managers and cultural promoters in various stages of career development may apply. Fifteen to twenty five individuals will be selected to attend the Institute. At the time an application is submitted:

• Applicant must be an arts professional, artist and/or administrator; • Applicant must not be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program; and • Applicant must be an Individual or Organizational Member of NALAC.

Estimated Costs* Total Estimated Cost to Participant is $1090 Tuition $500: Week of intensive training. Lodging $500: 7 nights hotel, shared double occupancy. Dinner $90: Average cost is $15 per day for 6 evenings. NALAC will cover the following costs: Roundtrip Travel to San Antonio; Daytime Meals; Reception; Transportation. *Most state and local arts agencies will match the cost of tuition and other costs to attend the Institute. To become a member, visit http://www.nalactienda.org/. Step 2 Carefully review the 2015 Leadership Institute Guidelines. Follow instructions to ensure that your application

materials are complete. An incomplete application will result in disqualification. Step 3 Prepare responses for the Online Application Form and Online Narrative Essay.

The online application form will guide you through the following questions: Background

1. How did you learn about the NALAC Leadership Institute? 2. Are you a student? If yes, indicate field of study. 3. Are you an artist? If yes, indicate artistic discipline(s) and years working as an artist. 4. Do you work, present or volunteer with arts and culture based organizations? If yes, please identify.

If you are an arts administrator, please complete the following required questions. 5. Enter your current title/position. 6. Organization’s name. 7. Describe your main duties/responsibilities. 8. Name of organization’s executive director. 9. Organization’s mailing address. 10. Organization’s website. 11. Year organization was founded. 12. How long have you been affiliated with the organization? 13. Was the emergence of the organization a community effort? 14. Enter your brief 100-word biography.

Narrative Essay Answer all of the following questions in narrative form. Maximum 1000 word count total.

1. What are your career goals for the next 5 years? 2. Why do you want to attend the NALAC Leadership Institute? 3. Describe your work as an arts professional (artist or administrator). 4. If applicable, describe the mission and work of the arts organization with whom you are affiliated. 5. Describe your most recent successes. 6. Describe a current challenge you are facing in your career/work.

Submit application Step 4 Go to NALAC submission manager: https://nalac.submittable.com/submit. Step 5 Create a Submittable account. If you already have an account with Submittable, login. Step 6 Enter contact information and continue. Step 7 The online application form will guide you through a series of standard questions. Step 8 Type (or paste) your responses to the narrative essay directly onto the online form. Step 9 Click "Apply Now" to submit your complete application. You will receive an email confirmation upon submission.
