ABOUT US

The El Paso Independent School District Education Foundation is a non–profit organization whose main purpose is providing grants for teachers to do innovative, active learning projects in their classroom and scholarships to graduating high school seniors in EPISD. The Foundation also is focused on providing grants for teachers and campuses in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), Fine Arts and Athletics. Since its inception in 1994, our organization has provided more than $1.7 million for these programs thanks to the commitment and investment of dedicated employees and community partners.

MISSION

The mission of the El Paso ISD Education Foundation, in collaboration and alignment with the El Paso Independent School District‘s goals, is to provide opportunities for excellence in education, promote innovation in teaching, and partner with the community to enhance the quality of education for all students.

our Community Campaign for Excellence. Sally is the Market CEO of the Hospital of Providence and a proud Burges High School graduate.

The Hospital of Providence’s $25,000 contribution kicked off our corporate giving campaign to fund scholarships and grants. The Foundation also granted funds for projects in fine arts, athletics and Science Technology Engineering and Math. Another notable contribution was $10,000 from Texas Gas Services. The grant funded a STEM project for Irvin High School’s Rocket New Tech students to use two 3-D printers for real-world applications.

The contributions from our community along with proceeds from our first EPISD 2020 Luncheon allowed us to provide more scholarships and grants back to EPISD than we had in recent history.

We are thankful for your contributions and support of the EPISD Education Foundation. Know that your contribution goes directly back to the classroom and truly impacts our students and teachers.

Sincerely,

Russell WiggsBoard President

Dear EPISD Education Foundation friends:

In the 2015-16 school year, the EPISD Education Foundation proudly gave $115,000 back to the students and teachers in the El Paso Independent School District. These grants and

scholarships were made possible thanks to the generosity of our more than 260 employee donors and community partners.

The $115,000 included $28,000 in grants to fund innovative projects that enhance EPISD’s active learning initiatives. We also awarded $75,000 in scholarships to support the district’s college readiness initiative by helping make higher education more accessible for our graduating seniors.

We were grateful to the Hospitals of Providence and Sally Hurt-Deitch for being our Honorary Chair for

BENEFIT LUNCHEONSuperintendent Juan Cabrera presented the guiding principles educators in EPISD will use in the next five years to help students reach their academic and life goals during a special presentation to civic and business leaders in March. “EPISD 2020: Creating Global Learners,” which benefitted the EPISD Education Foundation, gave Cabrera an opportunity to address more than 300 community leaders and share his vision for the future of EPISD.“Much of our future work requires us to think outside the box and take

ONE GASThe One Gas Foundation contributed $10,000 to the EPISD Education Foundation to provide two 3-D printers for the Irvin High School Rocket New Tech program. New Tech schools create a rigorous and engaging high school experience that features Project-Based Learning (PBL), a seamless use of technology, and a positive and empowering school culture. The 3D printers allow students a deeper learning opportunity for real world project-based learning.

risks,” he said. “In the long run, we know this will result in innovative teaching and learning that will better prepare our students for life after high school.” EPISD 2020 focuses on three general areas: •Broader Aims•Engaging, Challenging and Active Learning•Future FocusBroader Aims means the District will no longer only focus in providing instruction to students. Rather, EPISD will move toward offering programs

that provide career readiness, character building and social and emotional learning opportunities. Instruction in EPISD will no longer be in the form of passive, sit-and-get lectures. Teachers will be trained to create lessons that challenge and engage students, and also offer them the opportunity to learn an active, hands-on manner The event raised more than $35,000 for the EPISD Education Foundation.

SCHOLARSHIPS RECIPIENTS

The EPISD Education Foundation this spring awarded the Class of 2016 with 77 scholarships totaling $76,000. The awards also include scholarships sponsored by the Irvin High School Alumni Association and Renais-sance Learning. All scholarships are $1,000 with the exception of two $500 scholarships from Renaissance Learning. The company sponsored $5,000 in scholarships for students at Bowie and Jefferson high schools. Board members visited campuses and senior assemblies to surprise recipients with their scholarship award.

“We are pleased to be able to provide more than $76,000 in scholarships to our graduating seniors,” said Foundation Board President Russell Wiggs. “We appreciate the support of the EPISD community, which has made it possible to give our seniors more opportunities to continue their education beyond high school.”

Scholarships provided through the EPISD Education Foundation are made possible through the generous support of corporate donors through the Community Campaign for Excellence, the EPISD Employee Giving Campaign and the participants of foundation events. The Hospitals of Providence, the Community Campaign Honorary Chair for the 2015-16 school year, kicked off the campaign with a $25,000 contribution.

GRANTSThe EPISD Education Foundation made visits to 24 campuses in the fall of 2016 to surprise 31 teachers with $28,000 in Classroom Impact Grants.

The grants combined with the $77,000 in scholarships awarded to the Class of 2016 in the spring and a special $10,000 STEM grant for Irvin High School means $115,000 in contributions that the Foundation has given back to the District this year.

“We are pleased to be able to provide EPISD with $115,000 in funding to promote innovation in teaching and enhance the overall quality of education for EPISD students,” Foundation President Russell Wiggs said. “It’s a joy to see the surprised looks on teachers and students’ faces when we announce their names for grants and scholarships. We know the funding makes a difference to them.”

Polk Elementary School on Tuesday, where $2,000 was received for Gloria Zafiro-Salazar and Elaine Myers. Like all grants awarded this year, Myers’ grant embraces active learning. The campus’ Active Learning Leader will be purchasing Ozobots to assist with teaching Science Technology Engineering and Math.

“Ozobots use a language of color coding and it makes it very inviting for children in elementary schools,” Myers said. “They will use critical thinking and problem solving skills through Active Learning. We would like our students to be one step ahead with new careers that are being created every year in this field.” Coronado High School also received a Wilhite grant.

The Foundation scheduled visits throughout September and early October to award the grants and give teachers an opportunity to talk about what the funding will be used for in their classroom in front of their peers.

“Employees are becoming more aware of the Foundation and what we do to benefit teachers and students in EPISD,” Wiggs said. “We are grateful for the contributions made by EPISD employees.”

EPISD Education Foundation in the spring awarded $77,000 to graduating seniors, which included two scholarships provided by the Irvin High School Alumni Association and six scholarships provided by Renaissance Learning. Texas Gas Services also provided a $10,000 grant to purchase a 3D printer for Irvin High School’s Rocket Tech.

Grant proposals will be accepted online beginning in April 2017. A notice will be sent to all EPISD teachers to inform them of the grant process.

Any teacher with a new idea should try for a grant. It really didn’t take that much time once I had the idea, a little research in the area I wanted to target was a huge help in writing the grant.”

—Myers
