Two Great Museums, One Low Price

Dear Members,

As we move into the summer months, EMP/SFM’s community access initiative continues its

exhilarating momentum. We have opened our doors to the community and our neighbors have

responded with excitement and appreciation. We kicked off the initiative in late 2006 with a new

Disney Family Membership and have welcomed more than 4,200 families to date. The $75 membership

allows families to bring their children under 18 years old with them to experience both museums for

free. Being a member of EMP/SFM has never been so valuable.

Our All Access Nights program has also been a great success. Since January, more than 10,000 visitors

have taken in the museums on the first Thursday evening of the month. With live music performances

in Sky Church and hands-on music demonstrations, EMP/SFM is the place to be on Thursday evenings.

Response to our general admission price reduction this past spring has been overwhelmingly positive. Now all adults can visit both museums

for the low price of $15. Since the price change, we have welcomed many new visitors. It is an inspiring time to be a part of the museum

and we appreciate your membership and dedication to our institution.

In June, we will unveil a new exhibition, Out of this World: Extraordinary Costumes from Film and Television. On view will be costumes

and props from films and television shows such as Blade Runner, Batman and Star Wars to Star Trek, Lost in Space and Battlestar Galactica.

Out of this World: Extraordinary Costumes from Film and Television will delight popular culture fans of all ages. In addition, our music,

science and art summer camps are thriving and we expect more than 500 campers from grades K-12.

EMP/SFM has something for everyone this summer. As a member you have access to exhibition member openings—Join us on June 15

for a costume party celebrating the opening of Out of this World: Extraordinary Costumes from Film and Television—and free access to

Q: How does Darth Vader see through his helmet?

A: The short answer is, not very well! In the world of Star Wars, Darth Vader is a cyborg—part man and

part machine—as a result of his battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi on the volcanic planet Mustafar. During that duel,

Vader was both maimed and severely burned and needed numerous mechanical aids to keep living.

In reality, the Darth Vader costume was probably quite difficult to see out of. The Vader helmet on display in

the Science Fiction Museum is a special, modified version, created for Olympic fencing champion Bob Anderson

to wear when he portrayed Darth Vader during fight sequences with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). Anderson’s

helmet has a see-through area at the chin as well as semi-transparent cheek plates that are rather like dark

sunglasses. These modifications were made so Anderson could effectively see to fight, and not accidentally

pummel Mark Hamill.

We have BIG news!Visitors take advantage of EMP/SFM’s new admissions price

Since March 31, EMP/SFM visitors have taken

advantage of the new, lower ticket price:

just $15 for adult general admission to both

museums! In addition to lowering the adult

ticket price, EMP/SFM now offers reduced

admission prices for seniors and children.

Children under 5 are still free, while admission

for youth age 5 to 17, and seniors 65 and older

is $12. All ticketed admission allows access to

both museums.

This new ticket price announcement comes on the heels of one of the organiza-

tion’s best years. EMP/SFM saw an 11 percent increase in visitors in 2006, intro-

duced two highly successful exhibitions, DoubleTake: From Monet to Lichtenstein

and Disney: The Music Behind the Magic, and launched a successful family

membership campaign.

Sound and Vision: Artists Tell Their Stories, which opened in February,

gives visitors the opportunity to see and hear from artists in all genres from the

EMP/SFM oral history vault. Listeners can plug in to hear former Nirvana bassist Krist

Novoselic, country musician Marty Stuart, filmmaker George Lucas and many

more. Guests can then step into a booth and record their own oral histories.

Out of this World: Extraordinary Costumes from Film and Television.

SFM will unveil this amazing new exhibition June 16. It features more than 30

stellar examples of costumes and artifacts from television and film. See a 1940s

Superman cape among the treasures from comic book heroes.

Go eye-to-eye with the black headwear of Star Wars’ Darth Vader. Special

Family Days, sponsored by IKEA and Wizards of the Coast, will incorporate the

exhibition’s theme with costume parties and costume-making workshops.

The new pricing along with new exhibitions and programming are an important

step for EMP/SFM as it continues to reach out to the community.

New Faces at EMP/SFM

Addy Froehlich joined EMP/SFM as the new Exhibits Manager in April. Addy has been working as a museum exhibition designer and project manager for more than seven years. Most recently, Addy was employed at Lehrman Cameron Studio where she managed exhibition designs for the Children’s Museum of Utah

and Seattle’s Children’s Hospital. She also spent five years at The Museum of Flight.

Forrest Gibson joined EMP/SFM in March as Director of Technol-ogy. Forrest comes to us from Alaska where he worked as a technology consultant and was previously co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Travelport Corporate Solutions in Seattle. Forrest is also a musician, playing guitar and mandolin with his

bands, The Improbabilities and The Harmonicasters.

Maria Kolby-Wolfe arrived in April as EMP/SFM’s Membership Manager. Maria was previously with Swedish Medical Center Foundation as the systems specialist for their fundraising software. Before that she worked as the ticketing and patron services manager with Signature Theatre outside of Washington

D.C. Maria studied 20th Century American History in Chicago at Northwestern University.

Kathrine Young, our new Col-lections Manager, is responsible for the integrity, conservation, tracking and use of objects in the museums. Before arriving at EMP/SFM, Kathrine managed Microsoft’s corporate archives and coordinated the moving of The Museum of Flight’s collections and archive to a new facility.

We are delighted to welcome these talented people. Their expertise and solid knowledge will further enhance the outstanding programs currently being offered at EMP/SFM.

BERKLEE CITY MUSIC PROGRAMCity Music Program Auditions

Beginning in September, the City Music Program at EMP/SFM, in partnership with Berklee College of Music, will provide free music education opportunities for underserved, urban youth demonstrating and promoting the life-changing role that music education can play in the lives of children. Qualified students have the opportunity to audition for an extensive program that includes private tutorials, theory and composition instruction and ensemble performance. As students engage in the City Music Program they will become eligible for scholarships to Berklee’s renowned summer program and the Berklee College of Music. Auditions will take place in September. ADULT MUSIC LESSONSGet Ready to Rock!Beginning and Intermediate Guitar Lessons Return this Fall

EMP/SFM continues to offer instrument lessons, with beginning guitar and intermediate guitar sessions starting up again this fall. No experience is necessary for the beginners’ series, which will introduce students to rock and pop styles. Intermediate lessons are designed for guitar players with at least one year of experience. DISTANCE LEARNINGEMP/SFM Offers New Distance Learning ProgramsEducators can download curricula and access multimedia resources on EMP and SFM Web sites

EMP/SFM and partner Qwest are taking the classroom online, with new resources and support for teachers. This spring, EMP/SFM debuted Talk About the Passion: Teaching with Oral Histories of Artists, a multi-part curriculum complementing the Sound and Vision: Artists Tell Their Stories exhibition. The curriculum includes teacher and student materials and links to a “best of the Web” selection of resources for educators.

EMP/SFM’s newest education initiative is the museums’ first distance learning course for teachers: Teaching and the Oral History of Artists. From their own homes or classrooms, teachers can earn professional development hours and learn about developing oral history lesson plans tailored to their classes and subjects. EMP/SFM is the only museum in the Pacific Northwest to offer professional development of this kind! For more information, visit emplive.org/education.

AMERICAN SABOR EDUCATION PREVIEWSpecial Programming to Celebrate American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music

Exciting educational and public programming plans are underway for EMP/SFM’s exhibition American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music, opening October 13, 2007—with a special member preview on October 12. A bilingual gallery guide and volunteer interpreters will orient visitors to the space and introduce key concepts of Latino and American music. Teachers will have access to curriculum with bilingual-student materials, an in-service workshop and educator evening open-house. The exhibition will be accessible to visitors of all ages. Opening weekend programming will include unique Family Days activities, specially tailored content on the SpinKids Website (emplive.org/spinkids) and in the SpinKids Station. A speaker series and concerts will be available throughout the duration of the exhibition.

SUMMER CAMPSEMP/SFM Summer Day Camps

The 2007 summer camp season is underway! Filled with dynamic day camps for children entering kindergar-ten through 12th grade, themes include the science of sound, songwriting, drama, rock band, guitar 101, bass 101, drums 101, audio production, filmmaking and more. Exhibitions


On June 16, 2007, the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame (SFM) will open an original exhibition of more than 30 costumes and objects from Star Wars, Blade Runner, The Terminator, Superman, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica and many more of the most popular films and television shows of all time. The exhibition, Out of this World: Extraordinary Costumes

from Film and Television runs through September 30, 2007, in SFM’s third-level gallery space.

Offering visitors new ways of seeing characters as defined by their costumes, Out of this World: Extraordinary Costumes from Film and Tele-vision, is organized into themes including “Heroes and Villains,” “Creat-ing the Character” and “Caped Crusaders” as well as specific franchises such as Star Trek and Star Wars.

Heroes and VillainsEach of the costumes in this section has details—such as color, styling and cultural associations—that work as visual cues, signal-ing the film’s audience that the character is a villain or hero. Often, costume designers create looks that send ambiguous mes-sages, indicating that a perceived hero or villain might not be quite what they seem to be—as with the leather jacket worn by Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator and the fearsome alien mask worn by Louis Gossett, Jr., in Enemy Mine.

Caped Crusaders No exhibition about the power of costumes would be complete without

examining the brightly colored tights, masks and capes of comic book char-ac- ters. This section offers a look at the costumes that have become iconic

representations of good, evil and in-between—from the unmistakable blue, red and gold of Superman, to the acid green stylings of the Riddler,

to the vigilante bat/demon look of Batman.

Star Wars Star Wars creator George Lucas is a master at creating strong

characters—instantly recognizable and distinctively costumed. This section of the exhibition will display amazing costumes and props from the best-known science fiction movies in the world. Darth Vader’s jet-black helmet and cape mark him instantly as a villain, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s soft, earth-toned robes signify an honorable Jedi master.

Star Trek Science fiction fans everywhere will recognize many of the iconic costumes and objects on display in this section. The uniforms worn by the crews of Federation starships represent a near-utopian future of equality, opportunity, and adventure, while the piratical sash and tunic worn by Captain Kirk in the “mirror universe” show what might

happen if society loses its sense of community and cooperation.

Coming Soon: American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music

Open October 13, 2007 – September 7, 2008

American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music is the first interpretive museum exhibition to tell the story of the profound influence and impact of Latinos in American popular music. The exhibition focuses on five major centers of Latino popular music production in the post-World War II United States—New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, San Antonio and San Francisco—which represent the diversity of Latino music. Each city section will draw visitors into the broader histories and cultures that shaped these musicians’ contributions. The exhibition’s text will be presented in both English and Spanish. Exhibition support has alreadybeen provided by The Boeing Company and Qwest.

Battlestar Galactica Finale Viewing Party

On March 22, 150 Science Fiction

Museum members attended a sneak

preview of the final episode of Battlestar

Galactica season 3.5, hosted by SFM and

the Sci Fi Channel. Cast members Aaron

Douglas (Chief Petty Officer Galen Tyrol)

and Tahmoh Penikett (Lt. Karl “Helo”

Agathon) joined the group to introduce

the finale and for a question and answer

session following the screening. We

cannot confirm the event was Cylon-free.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd spoke

about his latest project, the film and

album 10 Days Out: Blues from the

Backroads, at an Oral History Live!

event March 29, at EMP/SFM.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd is living a dream: even as a renowned musician, performing with his

heroes on a nightly basis is a career high point. Currently on tour with blues legends Hubert

Sumlin, Buddy Flett and Chris Layton in support of the documentary 10 Days Out (Blues from

the Backroads), Shepherd and his band mates joined EMP director of curatorial affairs Jasen

Emmons and a sell-out crowd on March 29 in EMP/SFM’s JBL Theater, as part of the 2007

Oral History Live! Series, sponsored by Wells Fargo.

Excitement and enthusiasm for this most recent project was palpable from the moment

Shepherd hit the stage. The documentary features footage from his travels through the

American South with a film crew and a portable recording studio, as he backed up several

veteran blues players on their home turf.

Flett, a mainstay of the blues festival and tour circuit for 20 years, and Chris Layton, half of

Stevie Ray Vaughan’s band Double Trouble discussed their creative process, while all-time

blues great Hubert Sumlin stole the show as he treated the audience to the story of how

Howlin’ Wolf’s right hand man took possession of his first guitar, delivered with a jaunty

cadence and classic southern drawl.

The night was capped off with an autograph session, with many guests taking the

opportunity to meet these incredible musicians.

On April 25, authors Kevin Ryan and Brian Kehew discussed their new book,

Recording the Beatles. The sold-out event in EMP/SFM’s JBL Theater was co-presented by

The Pacific Northwest Chapter of The Recording Academy and the Audio Engineering

Society. Ryan and Kehew spoke about their years of research and extensive interviews

with the group’s former engineers and technicians, and how these findings shed new

light on the Beatles’ classic sessions.

Pop Culture Talks Recaps

On April 11 Disney legend and songwriter Richard Sherman entertained a sold-out audience in EMP/SFM’s JBL Theater. This lecture, part of the monthly Pop Culture Talks series, featured a sing-along of some of Sherman’s most famous songs such as “Super-califragilisticexpialidocious” and “A Spoonful of Sugar” from Disney’s Mary Poppins.

Pop Culture Talks Series 2007

EMP/SFM host engaging monthly programs on pop culture topics

that relate to the richness and diversity of the museums’ collections

and exhibitions, while creating a connection to the broader worlds

of science fiction and popular music.

This spring, Imagineer Joe Herrington demonstrated the secrets

behind Disney sound effects; recording engineer Bruce Botnick

reconstructed the recording session for The Doors’ “Riders on the

Storm;” songwriter Richard Sherman sang and played the Disney

music he and his brother created; and Disney veteran Marty Sklar

shared stories of working alongside Walt Disney and helping to open

eleven theme parks over fifty years. Pop Culture Talks are held on

the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm in the JBL

Theater. Tickets are free to members and $5 for the general public.

Pop Conference Recap

Over three days in April, EMP/SFM’s sixth

annual Pop Conference brought together

a record number of presenters—approxi-

mately 150 academics, journalists and

musicians—to consider music, time and

place from an array of perspectives. During

the weekend-long conference more than 325

participants listened to lively conversations

throughout the museum.

Themed, “Waking Up From History: Music,

Time, and Place,” the conference kicked-off

with a keynote address by celebrated novelist

Jonathan Lethem (The Fortress of Solitude, You

Don’t Love Me Yet) and cultural critic (The

Disappointment Artist).

Discussions on the significance, relevance and

relationships of a range of topics, including soul

music, television drama scores, Leonard Cohen, aboriginal hip hop,

indie music production in West Central Scotland, yodeling, John

Henry and Duke Ellington, left audiences astounded at the diversity

of conversation.

This year, all attendees received free admission to the Pop

Conference, made possible by the generous support of Rhapsody,

RealNetworks’ online music service. EMP/SFM’s Pop Conference is

presented by Rhapsody and Seattle Partnership for American Popular

Music, a collaboration between EMP, 90.3 KEXP, and the University

of Washington School of Music. Thank you to the many writers and

academics who presented at this year’s conference. Pop Conference

2008 will take place April 10 – 13.

2007 Science Fiction Weekend at EMP/SFM

As summer draws near, EMP/SFM has

planned a giant weekend of science

fiction fun! Join us June

13-16 for several science

fiction and pop culture-

themed events. Kicking

off the weekend is a Pop Culture Talks evening with

Deborah Nadoolman Landis,

president of the Costume

Designers Guild, on June 13

at 7:00 pm in EMP/SFM’s JBL

On the following day, June 16, Out of this World:

Extraordinary Costumes from Film and Television

opens to the public. EMP/SFM will host a day full

of family-friendly fun as part of Family Days, sponsored by IKEA and Wizards of the Coast! Art

projects relating to the exhibition will take place in

SpinKids Station; and young science fiction fans are

encouraged to come to the museums in costume and

will be able to participate in a fashion show in EMP/

SFM’s Sky Church in the afternoon. And, don’t forget

to stop by for some birthday cake—it’s EMP’s 7th

and SFM’s 3rd birthdays. We’ll be serving up science

fiction and slices of cake all day long!

On the evening of June 16, EMP/SFM will host the annual Science Fiction Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony from 8:00 pm – 11:00

pm at EMP/SFM’s Sky Church. The 2007 Science Fiction Hall of Fame

induction ceremony will honor Ed Emshwiller (art category), Gene

Roddenberry (film, television and media category), Ridley Scott (film,

television and media category) and Gene Wolfe (literature cat-

egory). Award-winning author Neal Stephenson will host the

evening’s events.

The Science Fiction Hall of Fame honors the lives,

work and ongoing legacies of science fiction’s

greatest creators. Founded in 1996, the Hall of Fame

was relocated from the Gunn Center for the Study

of Science Fiction at the University of Kansas to its

permanent home at SFM in 2004. Induction

nominations are submitted by SFM members. The

final inductees are chosen by a panel of award-

winning science fiction authors, artists, editors,

publishers and film professionals.

As part of the induction, a display

featuring personal artifacts and video

footage from each inductee will

be added to the existing Hall

of Fame. The inductees will be

featured in laser-etched images on the

translucent, glowing Hall of Fame display.

Previous inductees include, Stephen

Spielberg, George Lucas, Ursula K.

Le Guin, Mary Shelley and Isaac Asimov.

The evening will include a seated dessert

reception and ceremony. Tickets for

members are $40 and $50 for the
