On Thursday 11th June the Computing Club went to the Museum of Computing in Swindon.

We enjoyed a nice day! Some of us had a go at the typewriters (cool!) while others went for

the old gaming machines from the 1970’s right up to the present day. We then had a

programming lesson from Simon making a space invader game. At the end of the day we

all received a certificate.

Thanks to Mr Carter for organising the whole thing. We all enjoyed ourselves.

CONGRATULATIONS TO GEORGIA SMITH

Georgia’s group managed to achieve a strong 1st place at this weekend’s competition in Stoke on Trent and finished 1st in Round 1 of the National Espoir Group League. They are currently the group league champions with 2 rounds to go. Georgia also competed in the National Grade 7 finals and finished in 10th position. Georgia is very happy to have achieved a place in the national finals but the competition was strong. She has learnt a lot from this weekend’s competition and is also all great experience. She is now preparing for Welsh Individual Championships this weekend.

OPPORTUNITY TO VIEW STUDENTS’ ART

WORK

The annual art exhibition promises to be a terrific show this year with so many

talented A level, GCSE and Btec Art students. There are some particularly strong

figurative pieces such as Phoebe Bloomfield's portraits, and some very brave

abstractions by Rajbir Chana.

All students and their families are warmly invited to the show on Tuesday 30th June

between 6 and 8 pm. Snacks will be available while you browse the awesome art!

Would you like to find out how to help your child with

their reading or spelling? Is your child Dyslexic?

Parents/carers are invited to an ILD information evening on Tuesday 7th July in P11

from 4.30-5.30pm.

YEAR 5 PUPILS HAVE FUN AT JOG We are in a really fortunate position that we have some fantastic subject specific

rooms which we have recently opened up to our local primary schools on a weekly or

fortnightly basis. The Grove School, North Bradley, Holt, Southwick and West Ashton have

been our latest visitors and thoroughly enjoyed the projects that Mr Moulson, Mr

Attlesey, Mrs Buchan and Miss Champion have created for them.

Mr Moulson set up a project where the students made wooden clackers with their name

engraved on them. This enabled the children to learn how to use the laser cutter and

various tools. There was lots of banging in nails and hammering bits together and the

result was some really well designed clackers. The afternoon at school was set to be a

noisy one but a great noise maker for Sports Day!

Miss Champion has been working with West Ashton and Southwick School to make a

fabric bag with prints of their choices. They made some colourful bags with some making

them for pocket money, gifts for parents and sweets! Miss Champion was really pleased

with how hard everyone worked and the creativity the Year 5 students showed.

Mr Attlesey helped the students from The Grove School create a magazine cover using our

Mac computer suite. This room has 20 Mac computers which have some great editing

programs on them. The children learnt the processes needed to take a picture of

themselves and edit the shot with colours and writing. All the children produced a piece of

work that they were really proud of and were able to take home with them. One child

commented 'this is wicked!' The teaching assistant who came with them agreed that

we all learnt something new that afternoon, including me!

Finally, Mrs Buchan has been running Science workshops after school on a Thursday which

has provided the children an excellent opportunity to work in a laboratory setting. They

have been visiting on a two weekly basis engaging in a number of different experiments.

This Science introduction will be furthered when the students come back in July for a

Science Day, which will be full of experiments and very exciting!

From the English Faculty:

Some important reminders for Year 10: You will all have studied a novel in Year 10 – for most English groups it will be ‘Of Mice and Men’, or it might be ‘Mister Pip’. You will continue to study this book for the Literature exam next year, so please try to re-read it over the summer holiday. There are plenty of Study Guides available, both in book shops and online; these will really help you to understand the main characters and themes of the book. If I were you, I would definitely get one! (For the group doing ‘Mister Pip’, you may have to do some extra internet research – there aren’t many study guides.) A bit of advice... You will be looking at newspapers and magazines next year. A great habit to get into is reading a newspaper regularly – it doesn’t really matter what type of newspaper it is (anything from The Sunday Times to The Wiltshire Times will do), but make sure that you do read some of the articles. OR… set bbc.co.uk as your homepage and read some online articles. This will help out loads for the English Language exam next year! You will be studying a Shakespeare play in September – find out which one from your teacher so that you can do some research over the holiday. And lastly, well done to those of you who’ve worked really hard all the way through Year 10. Have a relaxing summer – don’t forget to read your book – and please come back refreshed and ready to work even harder. Mr Davis and the rest of the English Faculty.

Welfare Concerns If you have any concerns about your child, from the very small to more significant ones, The John of Gaunt

School has someone in place to help and support you and your child. For most minor issues the first person to

contact is your child’s tutor. They see your child every day and can deal will issues that arise from time to time

such as minor friendship issues or worries about school work or homework. The email for your child’s tutor and

house leader is in their planner.

For more serious welfare concerns we have a very experienced pastoral team including a Pastoral Support

Manager linked to each House. Helen Kerr is the Assistant Headteacher who has overall responsibility for

welfare and child protection and she heads up these teams and works with the House leaders and their teams

to ensure that all students are supported and cared for during their time at The John of Gaunt School. All of

these people are available to be contacted via the telephone or via email – see below. Please do not hesitate to
