You help make Marin Theatre Company more than just a venue for high-quality, theatrical experiences for audiences of all ages.

Because of you, we are able to produce intelligent, adventurous plays on our main stage that are second to none. With your support, we have become a respected leader in commissioning and developing the works of living American playwrights to help create

the classics of tomorrow. For example, in 2013, Marin Theatre Company produced the world premiere of I and You by Lauren Gunderson. Six months later, that play went on to win the prestigious Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award for best new play premiered outside of New York and is on track to be the most produced play in America this year. You helped make that happen.

Some of the most important work we do is in our community. Because of you, we are able to inspire and engage more than 8,500 children each year through our robust arts education programs. We are proud to send teaching artists into Marin’s public schools to work with underserved students and to offer subsidized tickets for those who couldn’t otherwise afford to attend live theater. We’ve expanded our children’s productions to bring quality theater to the families of Marin, reaching audiences as young as three years of age. Because of you, we can offer acting classes and drama workshops to budding amateurs, both adults and kids alike.

During this season of giving, we are asking you to help us do more.

Ticket sales and other earned revenue only cover 41% of our annual expenses. The rest comes from individual contributions of people like you who understand how much Marin Theatre Company already does and how much more we can do with your generous support.

Please consider making a special year-end gift today online or by calling 415.322.6035. Thanks to our board members, your gift will be matched one-for-one if it is received by December 31, 2014. Help us continue to make great theater happen on our stages, in our classrooms and in our community.

With gratitude,

Jasson Minadakis Michael BarkerArtistic Director Managing Director

In the last three years, Marin Theatre Company’s education programs have seen a tremendous amount of growth, increasing participation by 50% to more than 8,500 students. The Education Department has met and surpassed its two goals. The first was to create opportunities for age groups whom we hadn’t reached before with our programs, like middle schoolers and adults, so that anyone of any age could participate in theater. The second goal was to make a long-term commitment to bring theater into schools in the underserved communities of Marin County.

New partnerships with public schoolsThe Creative Learning Residency Program is a comprehensive drama integration program that uses theater to support the academic and social development goals of each of our partner schools. We have commissioned an innovative curriculum that intertwines drama with the Common Core Standards in Reading Comprehension and Public Speaking. Schools enrolled in the Residency Program also receive subsidized tickets to a Student Matinee at MTC or an onsite performance of our School Tour. We believe it is vital to expose students from a

young age to professional theater, while giving them the tools for analysis and creative processing to further investigate artistic experiences.

In three years, we have gone from serving 200 students in 2012—at Bayside Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy in Marin City and three continuation high schools—to serving approximately 1,800 students in 2014—adding Women Helping All People Inc. and Willow Creek Academy in Sausalito, and Next Generation Scholars, Davidson Middle School and Bahia Vista Elementary School in San Rafael.

Expanded programs for youth & adultsSince 2012, we have expanded our traditional class offerings. These continue to be after school, targeted to elementary school students, and offered through parks and recreation departments and school enrichment programs. Now called Creative Drama, we’ve grown from six locations to sixteen, offering a year-long trajectory that culminates with our Summer Performance Camp.

In 2013, we piloted a program for middle school students, because there was a dearth of theater training programs for that age group. Modeled after the format of a dance studio, Youth Conservatory has three skill levels, each focusing on a different style

of training. Students pick a class time in their level that works with their schedule and make a one-year commitment to the program. This year we have 24 students enrolled, 16 of who are also in our Youth Company, which performs at community events throughout the year.

In response to demand, we created our first Adult Classes, to much success last season. We have since expanded our programming to include performance classes and Shakespeare.

Theater for young audiencesMarin Theatre Company has long aspired to provide a full-season of theater programming suitable for families. Through the advantageous partnership with Bay Area Children’s Theatre, we have been able to bring quality professional children’s theater to Marin County since the spring of 2013. We are now in our second season of providing a five-show Theatre Series for Young Audiences to youth and families in Marin County.

I am very proud of the growth we have seen over the last two years and look forward to what is possible in the future as each program matures and deepens its service to our community.

“BrevitY is the soul of wit.” This motto sums up the essence of reduced shakespeare Company, famous for condensing grand and serious subjects (including The Bible, American history, “Great Books” and, of course, shakespeare) into fast-paced, three-actor farces.

The “other rsC” – not to be confused with the royal shakespeare Company – was founded in 1981 by Daniel singer, Jess

winfield and Adam long, who performed a 25-minute version of Hamlet at the renaissance Pleasure faire in Novato. for several years, they continued to play renaissance fairs around California, adding Romeo and Juliet to their repertoire in 1983. in 1987, the first full-length rsC show The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) premiered at the edinburgh fringe festival, establishing

the company’s international reputation. since then, Austin tichenor and reed Martin – current rsC writers, performers and managing partners – have written eight more touring stage shows and made a variety of tv and radio appearances, including a six-episode BBC radio show and a PBs special.

The Complete History of Comedy (abridged) is rsC’s ninth and newest show. it was developed with a workshop production in Napa, and premiered at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park in November 2013. This time, rsC tackles the one subject more central to their existence than shakespeare: humor itself. As tichenor and Martin discussed the process of creating The Complete History of Comedy (abridged), they considered the importance of humor in all of our lives.

The show’s framing device is a fictional ancient Chinese treatise on humor, The Art of Comedy, which the two writers conceived as a means to codify the major forms of comedy and give the script a logical sequence and structure. “[some]thing we figured out – and we’re not the first ones to call attention to it – is the very close relationship between comedy and violence,” remarked tichenor. “even that the language of comedy and violence is similar: you know, you go out there to ‘kill,’ you don’t want to ‘die’ onstage, you don’t want to ‘bomb’ onstage… everybody knows about The Art of War, written by Chinese general sun tzu; well we ‘discovered’ The Art of Comedy… This show needed a way to define what we were going to talk about, and the thirteen chapters of The Art of Comedy did that.”

Martin continued, “we write the sketches first, and sometimes we know what the framework is and sometimes we

don’t. so on this one, we started with lots of sketches that we liked, and then it’s retrofitting – ‘what’s the construct? how do we justify it?’”

while The Art of Comedy provides that framework, the real justification comes from their zany physical humor and from the delicate balance between total irreverence and a serious appreciation for the value of comedy. said Martin, with no outward irony, “People don’t take comedy seriously,” a statement that itself shows rsC’s dedication to the form and their ability to turn a phrase.

“The trick, for me,” tichenor said, “was to find a way to justify why this [topic] is

so important to me. And in a certain way, comedy is my religion and the theater is my temple, and that’s a glib response, but it’s kind of true. But also, that was a good starting point, because i figured out that i can exaggerate that aspect of something that i truly feel and turn it into something.”

Now rsC has made it their mission to spread the good word and, if comedy is their religion, we promise you’re about to experience church like you never have before.

THE MERRY WIDOW (New product ion!)The great operatic diva Renée Fleming stars as the beguiling femme fatale who captivates all Paris in Franz Lehár’s enchanting operetta, seen in a new staging by Broadway virtuoso director and choreographer Susan Stroman (The Producers, Oklahoma!, Contact).

Stroman and her design team of Julian Crouch (Satyagraha, The Enchanted Island) and costume designer William Ivey Long (Cinderella, Grey Gardens, Hairspray) have created an art-nouveau setting that climaxes with singing and dancing grisettes at the legendary Maxim’s. Nathan Gunn co-stars as Danilo and Broadway’s Kelli O’Hara is Valencienne. Andrew Davis conducts.
