Creating Ground Force ProductionCreating and developing ground force production is seldom talked about and even less understood, however it is used in every sport as well as everyday life. In this session John will teach you how to properly apply this important element using his battling ropes principles. Learning how to create force into the ground not only gives you a huge strength advantage in your sport but it is also the ultimate core strengthener when done properly. Understanding this also greatly enforces proper movement patterns. John will not only teach you the importance of ground force production but he will also introduce his new system of training called Brookfields Barrel Training. Paleo, Vegan, Intermittent Fasting: Whats the Best Diet? Its a common question: Whats the best diet? Dr. Berardi, a world-leading nutrition coach, is asked that more than most people. Is he in the paleo camp? The vegan camp? Low carb? Intermittent fasting? In this presentation, Dr. Berardi explains why those are actually the wrong questions to ask. Hell also offer a new kind of question and reveal which nutrition camp he really belongs to. This is one session you wont want to miss. (Lecture Only)(Chicago)

Training the Functional FootTrainers, therapists & shoe companies are starting to understand the importance of training the foot for functional movement. But often these functional foot training programs focus too much on conscious contraction and muscle strengthening. Learn a sensory based approach to developing a functional foot and natural efficient athletic movement. Sensory coaching and terrain manipulation will be used to develop automatic responsiveness of movement.(Chicago)

This preconference workshop will discuss the effective use of functional continuums. At the heart of training, coaching is a very common problem matching the right person with the right exercise.

When the match is inappropriate it often leads to frustration for the client and athlete and over-instructing for the trainer and coach.

The continuum approach allows every exercise to be part of a long chain starting with simple and less complicated moves and evolving into higher loads that are more complex and complicated. This means for every great functional exercise you use you should have a less complicated choice and a slightly more complicated choice. This workshop will help you make those choices in an efficient and effective manner. Come join us for some good science, healthy discussions, and great examples.

The training gym has evolved and we are far removed from the days of trying to make a living working with a small handful of clients in a tiny gym.

If you are dreaming about opening your own gym, or work in a gym and just want to figure out how to make more money, then you have to understand how the gym business has changed and where it will be going in the next decade. There has never been a better time to be in the gym business, but the rules we use to open gyms and make money have drastically changed. If you earn your living in the gym business then you want to be part of this workshop.

Chaos Sport-Speed Training: Applications for the General PopulationThe benefits of chaotic, change of direction agility training has been well documented over the years via practitioners and researchers alike. Improvement in strength, power, speed, injury reduction, and sports performance are just some of the things that make CHAOS training invaluable. One overlooked benefit of this style of agility training is the effect it has on building work capacity in a very functional manner for the general population. Everyone is an athlete in some form so it only makes sense that general population clients can reap amazing benefits by using specific CHAOS protocols in their daily training. Not only will they see improvements in strength, power, and balance, they will also see improvement in stability (injury prevention) and increase their fitness level through metabolic protocols using CHAOS agility principles. Coach Dos will take you through specific lead-up drills and exercises and progress to multi-level change of direction patterns and drills using visual, verbal, and physical cues. How to Develop Agile StrengthStrength training and its protocols have been well vetted and defined over many years. They have become a staple in our programs for good reason. Movement based strength training has produced extremely strong and stable farm kids, however this approach has only been reserved for tasks that usually happen outside of the gym. In this workshop, learn why and how biology is well suited for movement based strength training and how one can incorporate this training into a well-balanced programming approach, which includes traditional strength lifts. Agile strength come from moving the body in a multitude of purposeful tasks with load, just like back on the farm.(Chicago)

Functional Exercise Progressions: Mobility, Motor Control and StrengthEvery exercise professional should create a holistic exercise program that improves performance while creating more durability. In order to do this effectively functional exercise should be utilized as a fundamental component of the program design. We must design a program that uses proper exercise progressions, which are designed to focus on the weaknesses while maintaining and progressing the strength and power. We must ultimately work towards overall gains in strength, power and endurance, which are laid on top of a solid foundation of mobility and motor control. The focus of the session will be describing the importance of functional exercise and demonstrating how to implement and effectively progress functional exercise. (Providence, Chicago, Long Beach)

Training After Twenty: From Untrained to Mastery We have a problem in the Fitness industry: programs and training tend to be designed for the rare air of professional athletes, elite bodybuilding or high school football. The bulk of the population...and those who actually have the thickest wallets...need a different approach. In the lecture and the hands on, we will find the most simple, basic tools to work strength, flexibility, mobility, cardio and correctives into a program that is repeatable as well as able to handle some variety and fun. Our goal is reasonableness in both training and nutrition, but we will also leave the door open for occasional bouts of hard work and deprivation. (Providence, Long Beach)

Beyond Correctives: To Athletic Development & PerformanceFunctional training and correctives are a means to an end. The goal is to assure the integrity of quality movement patterns and then add load and finally speed. This progression from movement literacy to general physical preparedness to specific physical preparedness is necessary to help weekend warriors & elite athletes to achieve their performance goals. Correctives or functional training should serve our athletes goals instead of becoming ends in themselves. (Chicago)

Reconditioning: A Performance Based Model for Injured AthletesReconditioning is a performance based approach when working with elite athletes who have sustained injury. It addresses all aspects of athletic development from the time of injury, to a return to competition. This approach is directed by the performance team, and medically supported. Rehabilitation represents a classic model. It is typically directed by the medical team, and often underestimates the true demands of high performance. Return to competition strategies begin immediately following the injury and continue until the athlete successfully competes. The process to get here is based on sound principles of athletic development, not rehabilitation protocols. Understanding this is critical for physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, strength coaches and sport coaches. A key question to ask is: If you dont fully understand how to prepare a healthy athlete for competition, how can you effectively prepare them for competition following injury? The hands-on will cover stiffness and deceleration training for injury prevention. (Providence, Chicago)

Melt-Mold-Move for Optimal PerformanceAs movement practitioners we strive for efficient-optimal-performance but what happens when movement creates negative reactions? One cannot execute a movement task if the spaces that are built for motion (joints) lack the necessary mobility (extensibility and control). In addition, one may have the joint motion, but lack the tissue translation to transfer energy efficiently (perform well). By utilizing a systematic application of techniques, we can properly individualize what technique to select and when. All techniques have their use and the key in success is knowing what technique to recommend for each situation. (Chicago, Long Beach)

Stop Shouting! I Cant Hear My Motivation TalkingAs coaches, trainers, and therapists we do whatever we can to motivate our clients and athletes toward their goals. We know that motivation is the single most important factor when it comes to an individuals long-term success. But what if we have been misguided in our approach? What if our emphasis on lets go, you can do it, and your goal is in sight isnt enough? Despite our efforts, how many clients and athletes never achieve their full potential? We have all faced these individuals and ask ourselves what we could have done to help them make the first step or final step toward achieving their goal. Through the applied sciences of behavior change theory, self-determination theory, resilience theory, and educational psychology, this presentation will deliver a renewed framework of motivation. During the practical, Nick will focus on an unconventional approach to teaching anyone how to run effectively. (Providence, Long Beach)

Coaches need to understand the anatomy and function of the pelvic floor to address the stability, mobility, and incontinence dysfunctions. The presentation of effective pelvic floor muscle activation and relaxation techniques to increase awareness and improve neuromuscular control will be included. Techniques are for pre- or re-habilitation programs, and appropriate for a variety of conditions and settings. (Providence)
