Greetings, GHSA Football Fans: Welcome to the GHSA - Tommy Guillebeau Football Championships presented by Georgia Farm Bureau. The players, coaches, cheerleaders, and band members from these competing schools have put in many hours of work to prepare for this event. It is my hope that you will appreciate their skills in the magnificent setting of the Georgia Dome this weekend. The Georgia High School Association thanks you for your support of high school football throughout this season. Specta-tors are a very important part of all high school athletics, and this is especially true for the school for which you are cheering. We do want to remind you that good sportsmanship is an essential element of high school athletics, and today is no exception. Be positive in your support of all the participants. Cheer loud, cheer long and be a good sport. The GHSA office staff has been working for many weeks on the details that make these games special. Behind the scenes there is a large group of hard-working volunteers who will donate many hours this weekend to make this experience better for all participants. The extremely skilled staff of the Georgia Dome works diligently to support the GHSA in this event, and they stand ready to assist you and your needs. I want to thank all these people for their dedicated work to make this a show-case event every year. The quality of GHSA events such as this one is made possible through the help of corporate partners whose ads are dis-played in this program and around the field. The GHSA thanks these fine organizations, and we encourage you to support them whenever possible. People throughout the state of Georgia (and in parts of surrounding states) who cannot make it to the Dome this weekend will be able to share in the experience through live television production provided by Georgia Public Broadcasting. The GHSA thanks GPB for their fine work. These games are also being aired on a number of radio stations across the state on the GHSA Radio Network. GENERAL INFORMATIONThe Georgia Dome, the largest cable-supported domed stadium in the world, opened in 1992. Located in downtown Atlanta, the Dome is the home venue for the Atlanta Falcons, and played host to Super Bowl XXVIII and XXXIV, hosted the gymnastics and basketball events for the 1996 Olympic Games and hosted both a Men’s and Women’s NCAA Final Four. Annually, the Dome hosts the Bank of America Atlanta Football clas-sic, the SEC Football Championship and the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The Dome is equipped to handle large non-sporting events which include everything from major trade shows to concerts by such entertainers as the Rolling Stones and U2 to religious events by such ministers as Billy Graham and T.D. Jakes.

BASIC FEATURESA total of 8,300 tons of reinforced steel was used to construct the Dome. That is more than the weight of iron and steel used in the Eiffel Tower. A 437-mile sidewalk, from Atlanta to Cincinnati, could be built from the 110,000 cubic yards of concrete used at the Dome. The building covers 8.9 acres and contains 1.6 million square feet on all seven levels. The 290-foot high roof is composed of 130 Teflon-coated fiberglass panels - cov-ering 8.6 acres. The roof’s supporting cable totals 11.1 miles and the Dome is as tall as a 27-story building.

UPCOMING EVENTSIn addition to Atlanta Falcons home games and the SEC championship game, the Geor-gia Dome hosts the Chick-fil-A Bowl, the HBCU All-Star Bowl, Monster Jam, the Honda Battle of the Bands. For a complete schedule of events at the Georgia Dome, please visit www.gadome.com.

Archer is in just its fifth full varsity season and will make its first finals appearance in school history on Saturday. The Tigers were 11-0 last year before they were served a heartbreaking 34-32 exit by North Gwinnett in the second round and looked to avenge the loss this sea-son with a team that returned the majority of its starters. Despite all the talent dotting the roster, Archer fell short in three consecutive one-possession games to start this season and wore a 0-3 record. This slow start has been followed by 11 straight wins and a 30.5-point average margin of victory along the way. In the playoffs, Archer has obliterated its four opponents by a combined 147 points. Gabe Tiller quarterbacks Archer and is the key to getting the football to its deep cast of play-makers. Juniors Kyle Davis and Dylan Singleton can score in a variety of ways and have shared the spotlight well this season. In Archer’s 52-7 win over Etowah in the semifinals, Davis caught a 70-yard touch-down pass on Archer’s first play from scrimmage. Tiller dove in for Archer’s second touchdown and found Singleton for a passing touch-down less than a minute later before Singleton ran in a touchdown and returned an interception for a touchdown to make it 34-0. Singleton returned a punt for a touchdown during his three -touchdown perfor-mance in the quarterfinals. Sophomore Jameyst Williams is another big-play threat for Archer and he added a 42-yard touchdown run in the win over Etowah and two touchdowns in the quarterfinal rout over Hillgrove. Running back Randy Nails and South Carolina-commit and tight end Connor Redmond add more dependable playmakers for head coach Andy Dyer to call upon. Defensively, Archer has held five op-ponents to seven points or less and allows 16.6 points per game. The Tigers look to become the second-youngest school to ever to win a state football title as they opened their doors in 2009.

Colquitt County dominated McEachern 57-20 last Friday in what marked the Packers’ sixth straight semifinal appearance. The victory advanced the Packers into the finals for the first time since 2010. Head coach Rush Propst won five state titles at Hoover High School in Ala-bama but still searches for his first state crown in Georgia and what would be the Colquitt County’s first championship in 20 years. The Packers defeated Hoover earlier this season as the Alabama dynasty then went on and won another state championship last weekend. The Packers are led by an explosive offense that averages 47.1 points per game. In the semifinals, Colquitt County’s Ty’kerious ‘Grump’ Jones returned a kickoff for a touchdown and the offense had just one touch-down in the first half before catching fire. In the second half, the unit exploded for five touchdowns. Running back Sihiem King is the cata-lyst of the offense and has totaled 32 rushing touchdowns this season. Sixteen of King’s touchdown runs have come this postseason. Junior quarterback Chase Parrish adds balance to the offense with his effi-cient passing. Parrish has tossed 26 touchdown passes this season with nine interceptions and completes nearly 73 percent of his at-tempts. Defense has been a staple on Propst’s teams and this year’s unit has shown its ability to make key stops and adjust within games. Colquitt County trailed Dacula 23-15 at the half during the second round matchup and outscored the Falcons 36-7 in the second half. In the win over McEachern, the Packers’ defense held the Indians to three points in the second half and included a pick six on what marked the fourth interception of the game. The defensive line is relentless in its pressure but is also disciplined when it comes to playing as a unit and keeping teams from breaking off big plays outside. Quintin Hampton and De’Themeyus ‘Bull’ Barge roam at linebacker and lead a group that has posted 38.5 sacks and 119 tackles for loss this season.

CLASS AAAAAA SKINNYThe state title in Georgia’s highest classification has landed in Gwinnett County the past four seasons and Archer will look to make it a fifth against the No. 1 ranked team in the state, Colquitt County. Quarterbacks Gabe Tiller (Archer) and Chase Parrish (Colquitt County) are leaders and game managers that know how to build offensive momentum and fuel the type of explosive scoring we’ve seen this season from both offenses. Colquitt County’s star running back Sihiem King will look to outpace an Archer offense that stars Dylan Singleton and a cast of some of the most versatile offensive weapons in the state. Archer can hit big plays with deep threat Kyle Davis and Colquitt County will have to use its ability to pressure quarterbacks to get to Tiller, who has shown the ability to extend plays in the pocket and get the ball down field. This marks the first time Archer and Colquitt County have ever faced each other. The two teams have combined for 414 points in their playoff victories, an average of 103.4 combined points per round.

Georgia is considered one of the most competitive states in the country when it comes to high school football, and Mays’ inspiring run to this year’s state championship is testament to everything that makes Georgia high school football so well-respected. The Raiders have won a school-record 12 games this season and became the only No. 3 seed to advance to the state championship. The Raiders won their first three playoff games by a combined 13 points but scored a more comfortable 30-15 victory over Stockbridge in the semifinals last Friday. Quarter-back Asania Aderhold hit Deparis Carter for a 43-yard touchdown in the second quarter to give Mays a 7-0 lead and Kesselly Tyler iced the game with two touchdown runs in the fourth quarter. The postseason run started with a 26-19 win over South Paulding that saw Charlie Pat-rick carry the ball 16 times for 93 yards and a touchdown. The second round stacked Mays against undefeated and top-ranked Ware County. Aderhold finished 11-of-14 passing with touchdown passes to Tyshawn Brown and Randrecous Davis in a 21-18 victory. With the win, Mays became the first Atlanta city school to beat a No. 1-ranked team since Douglass defeated Southwest DeKalb in 1995. In the quarterfinals, Mays hosted Jones County in a rare showdown between No. 3 seeds. Mays stunned the Greyhounds on the final play of the game when Ader-hold threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Julius Whitehead. Aderhold finished with three scoring strikes, including a Hail Mary to Brown that ended the first half. The victorious Raiders also got scores via reception and kickoff return by Carter. Head coach Corey Jarvis has a talented defensive line that includes defensive end Natrez Patrick (committed to Georgia) and tackle Dallas Warmack (Alabama). These four-star ath-letes highlight a cast with several other Division I prospects. The Raid-ers may be the best story this postseason as in their 34-year history they have reached double-digit wins only three times.

Northside is back in the state championship for the first time since 2009 and comes off a 30-21 victory over previously unbeaten Alla-toona in the semifinals. The Eagles took a 20-7 lead at the half over Al-latoona, outrushing the Buccaneers 193-to-8. Northside running back Willie Jordan scored two touchdowns in the first half and scored again in the third quarter to highlight his monster game with 41 carries for 234 yards. Northside uses its prolific running game and stout defense and has followed this formula to record at least 10 wins every season since 1998. The Eagles’ last state titles came in 2006-07 with back-to-back perfect 15-0 seasons and playoff experience is present within the Eagles program. Northside fell 45-37 to region-rival Jones County on Sept. 9, but this current 10-game win streak since the loss has seen the team improve on both sides of the football with each new week. In the quarterfinals, Northside edged Glynn Academy 31-7 and used its over-powering running game to grab the win. All four touchdowns came on the ground; two from T.J. Anderson and one each for Willie Jordan and Tobias Oliver. Justin Alonso nailed a 31-yard field goal for the Eagles at the end of the first half. During the first round, Northside routed North-side-Columbus 48-0 and set up a 30-21 win over a dangerous Dalton squad in the second round. Jordan rushed for four touchdowns and 132 yards on 14 carries in the win over Northside and Oliver led the way in the victory over Dalton with 18 carries for 148 yards and three scores. Defensively, Kam Burnett, Rakwon Young, Chris Wright and Jayleen Kendrick have all recorded interceptions in the postseason and play aggressive with the Eagles’ reliable defensive front disrupting oppos-ing offenses. Northside has won 14 region titles and is 436-161-6 since the school started in 1963. The Eagles didn’t get their first double-digit win season until 1975.

CLASS AAAAA SKINNYMays will be looking to give the city of Atlanta its first state champion since Southwest Atlanta won the Class AA title in 1973. It just so happens that Southwest Atlanta became Mays High School in 1981. Also, this will be the first time in school history either team has met on the gridiron and the matchup features several underlying themes. Mays is led by an offensive line that averages more than 300 pounds and Northside also uses its bulk upfront to power one of the most productive rushing attacks in the state. To no surprise, the stars to watch in this matchup will come in the trenches. Mays’ defensive ends Natrez Patrick (UGA) and Aaron Cochran (Louisville) will look to funnel Northside’s running game inside. On the offensive side, Mays’ running game will depend on guard Dallas Warmack (Alabama) to lead the way and Northside will need to take advantage of Willie Jordan and Tobias Oliver’s ability to share carries as guard Brandon Sandifer (Florida-commit) opens holes against an athletic and massive Mays defensive line.

The more things change, the more they stay the same; at least that is one win away from continuing to be the case for Buford. Unques-tionably the most well-established football dynasty going in Georgia, Buford captured four state championships in its last five years in Class AA, with its only blemish coming via an overtime loss to Calhoun in the 2011 final. The Wolves moved up to Class AAA and promptly won it all in both 2012 and 2013. Now making their debut in Class AAAA, they have remained dominant. Buford boasts a 27-20 victory over McEach-ern, a semifinalist in the state’s highest classification, and no other in-state opponent has come closer than a three-touchdown margin. The string of overwhelming performances includes playoff defeats of Southeast Whitfield (63-0), Mary Persons (35-14), Marist (30-6) and Cartersville (27-3). Buford is crushing its 2014 adversaries by an aver-age of 36 points per game and has five wins by more than 50 points. The team has posted six shutouts, has limited 10 opponents to single digits and nobody other than McEachern has managed to put up more than 14 points. Cartersville mustered only a field goal and was held to a mere 66 yards in the first half (193 in the game) after previously averaging more than 41 points per game. A dominant, opportunistic defense helped the Wolves own the field-position battle and start all four of their touchdown drives at no worse than the Purple Hurricanes’ 41-yard line. Joshua Johnson had a trio of one-yard scoring runs, Jor-dan Perlotte tacked on the exclamation point from two yards out and Evyn Cooper was Buford’s leading rusher with 99 yards. Compliment-ing a deep backfield, Luke Humphrey can also pull the trigger through the air. During the win over Marist he threw for 172 yards and tossed a 22-yard touchdown to heralded tight end Isaac Nauta. Head Coach has a career record of 137-18 and that includes a 0-10 mark his first year and only year as the head man at East Paulding.

St. Pius knows a thing or two about turning the tide on familiar foes and this will be another revenge game of sorts for the team. The Gold-en Lions’ most recent state championship appearance came in 2012 against none other than Buford, which triumphed 10-3 in that Class AAA showdown. They will hope to inflict some payback on Buford, just like they did on Woodward Academy in the semifinals. This 2014 campaign got off to an extremely slow start for St. Pius, which lost its first two games by more than 20 points apiece (42-20 to Blessed Trinity and 42-21 to Woodward). The War Eagles, however, ran into a much different opponent last Friday, even though for much of the contest a similar outcome to that of the regular-season clash seemed to be in the cards. With the benefit of home-field advantage thanks to a victorious coin toss, St. Pius erased all of a 21-7 deficit heading into the fourth quarter. The Golden Lions scored 21 unanswered points to prevail 28-21. Joey Connors, now a running back after beginning the year as the team’s quarterback, delivered the game-winner with 47 seconds remaining via a 30-yard scamper. He finished with 10 car-ries for 124 yards. Surviving close encounters is nothing new for St. Pius, which may be an advantageous factor in advance of a date with Buford given that the Wolves are not exactly candidates to ever get blown out. In addition to the quarterfinal thriller, the Golden Lions’ 12-game winning streak includes a 31-28 victory over Grady and a 10-9 defensive struggle with Marist. At the same time, their playoff run has also featured more routine wins over Fayette County (24-0), East-side (52-20) and West Laurens (31-13). Run-heavy St. Pius has been led by Connors, Dalton Wilson, Ransom Klinger, Grant Holloman and quarterback Reed Egan. The Golden Lions are one of the oldest private schools in the metro Atlanta area (1958) and have had only eight head coaches in their history.

CLASS AAAA SKINNYBuford is making an eighth consecutive appearance in the state final. St. Pius is looking for its second championship and first since 1968. While that may not be an extensive history of titles, the Golden Lions have been consistently solid of late. They have not been bounced out of the playoffs prior to the quar-terfinals since 2010. With neither team afraid to pound the ball on the ground, the outcome of this one could be decided in the trenches. Buford’s defense, led in part by defensive tackle Quay Picou and linebacker Austin Smith, held Marist’s ballyhooed rushing attack to just 81 yards. St. Pius must shore things up against the run after watching Woodward’s Elijah Holyfield go for 186 yards on 22 carries. Running back Joey Connors will likely have to make big plays both on offense and from his safety position if the Golden Lions want to pull off an upset. The teams have only played three times with Buford winning the last matchup in the Class AAA finals in 2012.

Calhoun has once again been up to its usual tricks this season: re-gion dominance, home cooking and an appearance in the state cham-pionship game. The Yellow Jackets captured their 14th consecutive region title and have extended their winning streak at Phil Reeve Sta-dium to 57 games while booking a fifth trip to the Georgia Dome in the last six years. The 2014 campaign got off to an inauspicious start when the Jackets trailed 14-0 at halftime of their opener against Dal-ton. They stormed back to win that game 21-14 and for the most part it has been one-way traffic ever since. Hal Lamb’s squad did not come close to playing another regular-season game so competitive. Calhoun won the rest of its contests prior to the state playoffs by at least two touchdowns, including six by more than 40 points and two of which were 59-0 and 67-0 whitewashes of Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe and Coahulla Creek, respectively. Clearly the Yellow Jackets can be domi-nant at times and that was the case in a 45-7 first-round romp over Westside-Augusta and in the round of 16 against Cedar Grove, which it crushed 38-18. But things got difficult in a hurry, to the extent that Calhoun’s season came dangerously close to an abrupt end. A quar-terfinal showdown with Elbert County was tied 10-10 at the half and at 17-17 in the final two minutes. The visitors even had possession, but a perfect punt by Jonah Landry pinned Elbert County back at its own two-yard line and the Calhoun defense came up with a game-winning safety one play later. Although the Jackets were tested by Westmin-ster in the semifinals, quarterback Kaelen Riley took the suspense out of it before any late-game dramatics were required. Riley completed 18 of 23 passes for 278 yards and three touchdowns, all of which came from at least 27 yards away. Calhoun’s last state title came in an excit-ing overtime win over Buford in the Class 2A title game in 2011.

Washington County has been trending in the right direction dating back to 2011. If the trend continues, a state championship in 2014 will be the result. The Golden Hawks lost in the first round three years ago, reached the quarterfinals in 2012 and finished runner-up last season (lost to Buford 35-19 in the Class AAA title game). With the dynas-ty that is Buford football out of the way in Class AAAA, Washington County looks like the new dominant force of this classification. It has been clobbering opponents from start to finish this year and no op-ponent has come within single-digits. The Golden Hawks’ most com-petitive contest of the regular season was a routine 47-27 disposal of Burke County. While their defense has been stellar (two shutouts and seven games of no more than seven points allowed), their offense has been overwhelming. They are averaging more than 51 points per outing, have scored more than 70 points three times and have won nine games by more than 30 points. Quarterback A.J. Gray is border-line unstoppable. In his team’s first 10 games he rushed for 1,161 yards and 20 touchdowns while throwing for 1,278 yards and 17 scores. He ran especially rampant in a 62-35 quarterfinal win over Pierce County, amassing 442 yards and eight touchdowns. In a 28-17 semifinal defeat of Blessed Trinity, Gray racked up 277 rushing yards and three scores. Still, Washington County is far from one-dimensional. Not only does coach Joel Ingram let Gray air it out, but the rushing workload is also shared by Ethan Ray. The senior running back contributed 99 yards and a score on 17 attempts against Blessed Trinity. Those two stars are also game-changers on defense. Gray has returned four interceptions for touchdowns and Ray picked off a pass in a first-round blowout of Jackson-Atlanta and took it 90 yards to the endzone. Interestingly, the Golden Hawks have sent six players to NFL including All-Pro lineback-er Takeo Spikes.

CLASS AAA SKINNYTwenty-eight games—14 for each school—did nothing to change what the rankings suggested at the very beginning of the season: that Calhoun and Washing-ton County would collide in the championship. Not only was the talent of the two teams well-documented heading into 2015, but they are also well-respected programs. Calhoun’s previous nine seasons resulted in two quarterfinal showings, five runner-up finishes and one state title (2011). Washington County cap-tured three championships in a four-year span from 1994 through 1997. If this battle lives up to the hype and goes down to the wire, both teams should benefit from having survived tense moments. While Calhoun escaped Elbert County, Washington County overcame Blessed Trinity after trailing 10-0. The quarterback battle between Kaelen Riley and A.J. Gray will obviously be intriguing, as will the Jackets’ defensive effort to contain Gray. Calhoun’s starters, led by linebacker Austin Bennett and end Landon Rice, have given up only 34 points in four playoff games. This is the only classification that features two undefeated teams.

Head Coach Danny Britt has the Cadets clicking on all cylinders heading into the Georgia Dome. Benedictine is the classification’s top scoring offense, averaging 44 points per game. Last season the Cadets posted a school record 13 wins, but fell to Lamar County 10-7 in the semifinals. Benedictine will have a chance for revenge against Greater Atlanta Christian after the Spartans knocked off the Cadets 24-21 to open the season. After the loss, the Cadets rolled off five straight wins. Their second loss of the season came against Vidalia 35-28. The Ca-dets bounced back strongly and as a result averaged 47.9 points per game in their 12 wins, including outbursts of 70, 63 and 62 points. Senior quarterback Stevie Powers is one of the state’s most prolific passers throwing for 2,993 yards with 29 touchdowns and just six in-terceptions. He was very efficient in his first meeting against Greater Atlanta Christian, with 274 yards passing and two touchdowns while also running in a score. Powers, a Southern Mississippi commit for baseball, threw for a combined 805 yards in consecutive wins over Wayne County and Jeff Davis. His favorite target is Brad Stewart. The three-star wide receiver hauled in 409 yards and three scores in the same two-game span. Stewart has 1,244 yards on 64 catches with 17 touchdowns this season. The Cadets are strong on both sides of the ball and also led the region defensively, allowing just 11 points per game. The Cadets have outscored their opponents 157-26 thus far in the playoffs including routs of No. 10 Thomasville, No. 3 Lovett and No. 6 Brooks County. Benedictine has recorded 25 sacks while intercept-ing 19 passes this season and its two-way standout Stewart leads the team with five interceptions. The strong run game of John Kennedy (932 yards) and Chance Jackson (785 yards) balances the offense. The Cadets have been in existence since 1908 and have never won a state championship since state titles began being recognized in 1947.

The undefeated Spartans are a far cry from their 1-9 record five years ago. Head Coach Tim Hardy has compiled a 34-6 record in his three years with the program and now has sights set on the program’s first state title. Greater Atlanta Christian rolled through the regular season, racking up confidence-boosting wins along the way. The Spar-tans knocked off visiting Benedictine to open the season 24-21 after a monster performance from wide receiver Darius Slayton. The UGA-commit caught eight passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns, in-cluding the game winner. The Spartans scheduled stiff out-of-class games including North Oconee and Eagle’s Landing Christian, who is in the Class-A Private state championship. GAC handled North Oconee 28-10, and defeated Eagle’s Landing 23-16 on the road. Once getting into region play, the Spartans began to roll, outscoring their next five opponents by 37 points per game. GAC received a scare when it played No. 3 Lovett but the Spartans knocked off defending state champion Lions for the first time in eight years, 14-7. Davis Mills threw two touchdowns in the win and the Spartan defense was able to hold off a late Lovett rally. Since entering the playoffs, each game has gotten closer. GAC started off the postseason drumming Chatta-hoochee County 41-13. Next the Spartans defeated last season’s state runner-up Lamar County 48-20. Undefeated No. 2 Vidalia was next in line for the Spartan buzz saw. Tennessee-commit Micah Abernathy ran for 194 yards and three scores as GAC jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back. The semifinals produced a scare against No. 5 Fitzgerald. GAC led 41-27 but two late scores knotted the game at 41. Will Kenworthy booted 21-yarder as time expired for a 44-41 win. Ab-ernathy carried the load with 259 yards and two scores. GAC, started in 1991, has never won a football state title, losing to Buford 34-10 in its only other finals appearance in 2002.

CLASS AA SKINNYOne of these two schools will be crowned state champs for the first time in program history, but raising the trophy won’t be easy for these two familiar and well-respected teams. It was a nip-and-tuck game when Benedictine fell at Greater Atlanta Christian in Week 1, 24-21. The game was as even as it gets, with the Cadets totaling 392 yards while the Spartans gained 414. A pair of SEC-commits lead the GAC offense. UGA commit Darius Slayton torched the Cadets for 186 receiving yards in their first meeting while Micah Abernathy, headed to Tennessee, has also run wild in the playoffs. The Cadets will need QB Stevie Powers to find Brad Stewart on the outside. GAC lost the turnover battle last time they played but they may not be able to afford doing so again. Keep an eye on whether Benedictine’s defense can slow down the Spartans speed. GAC held the Cadet’s No. 1-ranked Class AA scoring offense to a season-low 21 points when they met. This is the only finals matchup where neither team has won a state title.

Eagle’s Landing Christian got off to a slow start to the season as it stacked six straight losses to open the season against some of the top teams at higher classifications. The Chargers’ first loss was against their state title opponent, Mount Paran Christian, and resulted in a 31-14 defeat. From there, the Chargers would face Class AAAAA semifi-nalist Stockbridge, Class AA state finalist Greater Atlanta Christian, Mount Pisgah, Whitewater and Class AAAA semifinalist Woodward Academy and would score more than 20 points only once in that span. Once the Chargers got into region play however, they won the next four games to win the region title and lock up a No. 5 seed in the play-offs. In the Chargers’ first round game against Athens Christian, they won easily 34-0. Quarterback D.J. Hammond rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns while Trevor Gear added a 25-yard score. In the quarterfinal matchup against Prince Avenue Christian, the Char-gers won big again, 47-17. Hammond was unstoppable, completing all eight of his passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 82 rushing yards and three touchdowns. ELCA visited top-seeded Cal-vary Day for the semifinals and held on for a 14-7 win. Hammond ran for an eight-yard score in the first quarter and threw a six-yard touch-down pass to Evan Lewis in the second quarter. Hammond and Gear were not part of the team to start the season because they were both transfers and did not gain eligibility until October. Hammond has nine touchdown passes and over 900 yards passing since taking over in the fourth game of the year. Gear has also been big for the Chargers, rush-ing for 102 yards and one touchdown in the win over Prince Avenue. Other players that have contributed are linebacker Chase Burdette and defensive lineman Nick Dawson. Burdette has over 120 tackles and Dawson is one of the more sought after recruits in the state.

Mount Paran head coach Mitch Jordan has built the program into a force in Class A and the Eagles are looking to win their first ever state title. Since the Eagles lost to Aquinas last year in the quarterfinals, they have appeared to only be getting better by the week. Mount Paran started the season with a convincing win over their state champion-ship opponent Eagle’s Landing Christian and never looked back, finish-ing the regular season with a 10-0 mark. The Eagles started the play-offs with a first round matchup against Strafford Academy and won 45-14. Quarterback Jake Allen threw two touchdown passes while running back Emoni Williams scored all three of his touchdowns in the first half. The Eagles went on to take on Savannah Christian and won big again, 35-14. Williams had a 99-yard kickoff return to open the game and scored two touchdowns in the third quarter. In the semifi-nals, the Eagles got a rematch against Aquinas and this time they were able to come out on top with a 34-14 win. Dorian Walker scored four touchdowns to snap the Irish’s 26-game win streak. The Eagles rushed for 414 yards on 54 carries in the win. The young program had only won 26 games coming into the 2013 season, but the Eagles are 22-3 since. They are also the first team from Cobb County to reach the state finals since Walton did it in 2011, and would be the first Cobb team to win a state title since Marietta in 1967. One of the reasons for their success is the play of Walker who has rushed for over 2,000 yards this season. Walker has gotten offers to play at Cincinnati, Memphis and Purdue. Williams has also been a force as a running back and receiver, and Allen has been one of the more efficient quarterbacks in the state. Another player to watch is Taylor Trammell, who has rushed for over 700 yards this season.

CLASS A-PRIVATE SKINNYThis is not the first time these two teams have met this season as Mount Paran and Eagle’s Landing Christian faced off in the regular season opener, and the Eagles came out on top 31-14. Dorian Walker was big for the Eagles, rushing for 147 yards and one touchdown in the win. Walker is coming off a four-touchdown performance in the semifinals win over Aquinas. Emoni Williams was also a key player for Mount Paran as he scored on a 66-yard reception in the last meeting between the teams. The biggest difference between their previous meeting and is ECLA will have two players it didn’t have in the season opener. Quarterback D.J. Hammond and running back Trevor Gear could not play until October, but when they were ruled eligible, the Chargers rolled and have never looked back. Both teams can run the ball effectively, have been efficient in the passing game and are stout on defense. This has the makings to be the best finals game of the weekend.

Defense wins championships, or at least that’s what Hawkinsville hopes to prove. The Red Devils have allowed just seven points per game and 127 yards per game this season leading all of Class A in those categories. Senior Cal George leads the defense with six inter-ceptions. Hawkinsville’s season high in points allowed is 14 in what resulted in a 20-14 win over Jenkins County in the first round. Head Coach David Daniell has overseen the growth of a four-win team just two seasons ago into 12 victories this year and a chance for the pro-gram’s sixth state title. Heavily reliant on their defense, the Red Devils score only 23 points per game, third-lowest in Region 4. Dakota Sloan has thrown for 651 yards and rushed for 458 yards in the Red Dev-ils’ ground and pound attack. Reginald McDonald has rushed for 623 yards and seven scores while Malik Holliman and Warren Singletary both have 250 yards rushing. The Red Devils one of their biggest tests of the season when they hosted No. 5 Dooly County back in October. Dooly entered 4-1 with Hawkinsville at 6-0. The Red Devils broke a 13-13 tie heading into the fourth quarter using touchdown runs from Sloan and Singletary to ice the game 28-13. Sloan rushed for 80 yards and Singletary ran for 62 as Hawkinsville outgained Dooly 318 to 131 in total yards. The following week, defending champs Marion County handed the Devils their lone defeat 13-6. Although Marion County only gained 208 yards, they still managed to knock the Red Devils from the unbeatens. Hawkinsville beat Jenkins County 20-14 before its 12-6 overtime win over No. 4 Charlton County to set up a rematch with Marion. Tyler Brown hit a 26-yard field goal with 13 seconds left to upset Marion County 15-13. McDonald ran for 108 yards as the Red Devils managed to control the clock (29 minutes of possession) and keep the explosive Eagles offense off the field.

Buddy Nobles’ first season as head coach got off to a surprising start for the Indians. A Week 1 matchup with Early County resulted in a 7-7 tie after both coaches agreed before the game that if the situa-tion arose, they would settle for a tie since the game was not a region match. After the unpolished Week 1 performance, the Indians seemed to get back on track when they thumped Berrien 49-20, however, Class AA Fitzgerald gave Irwin a taste of their own medicine the following week beating the Indians 40-12. The taste must have stuck in Irwin’s mouth, because since that game the Indians have reeled off 10 straight wins while averaging 38.5 points per game. Irwin County drilled No. 5 Charlton County 41-14 after Charlton entered the game 5-0. The Indi-ans’ high-powered offense went untested the rest of the regular sea-son, outscoring opponents by an average of 32 points. The Indians use a powerful rushing attack to overwhelm opponents. Zach Tolar lines up under center at quarterback, but prefers to do his damage with his legs. DJ Pollard, Robert Moore, Ty Hogan, and Jakyron Young all make up one of Class A’s most feared ground games. The Indians shutout Atkinson County in the opening round 28-0 to set up a meeting with No. 5 Dooly County. Irwin’s offense sputtered early and found itself in a 7-6 hole in the second half. Coach Nobles didn’t panic and saw his team respond with 20 unanswered points led by 118 yards rushing and a score from Robert Moore to help Irwin advance 40-29. A semifinal date with No. 7 Commerce was much of the same. Young scored four times in the second half to lead the Indians to a 28-7 win after trailing at the half. Young would finish with 199 yards while Pollard added 91 of his own. Irwin last won a state title in 1975 and Hawkinsville won back-to-back titles in 2003-04.

CLASS A-PUBLIC SKINNYThe title game will be a contrast in methods but not in how both teams will try and move the ball. Irwin County looks to light up the scoreboard coming in averaging 34 points per game, while Hawkinsville likes to control the tempo with its running game and suffocate opposing teams defensively. The Red Devils have held their opponents to under 100 yards of total offense six times this season. On offense, both teams heavily rely on their rushing game. Irwin will try to break off quick scores, while Hawkinsville is content with a methodical pace of moving the ball down the field trying to take time off the clock. Playing its slow grind-it-out style of play, Hawkinsville has found itself in many tight games but has found ways to win. Aside from its tie and lone loss, Irwin’s closest game has been a seven-point win over Atkinson County. Irwin’s Jakyron Young and Reginald McDonald of the Red Devils have the capability to make game-changing plays for their respective teams.

Georgia Electric Membership Corporation (Georgia EMC) is proud to sponsor the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award and today announces the 48

GHSA-member high schools that will receive the 2014 award. The award honors schools that demon-strated exemplary sportsmanship during the 2013-2014 school year.

“The GHSA congratulates these member schools on their selection as region sportsmanship award winners,” says Gary Phillips, GHSA Executive Director. “We thank the GEMC for their support of our schools and efforts to raise the emphasis on sportsmanship in all competitions.”

Since 2006, the GHSA and Georgia’s EMCs have sponsored the Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award, which reinforces the GHSA philosophy: “Students, athletes, coaches, spectators and all others associated with high school activities programs should adhere to the fundamental values of respect, fairness, honesty and responsibility.” Schools around the state are honored for exhibiting exceptional sportsmanship during competitive events.

Student athletes, fellow students, school staff, parents and event spectators are recognized for the sportsmanship they display. The award is not only a school honor, but a community honor as well. The GHSA region secretaries select winners based upon the sportsmanship demonstrated throughout the school year.

Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Awards are presented annually to the GHSA-member high schools in the 48 regions from the six classifications by representatives from the EMCs during fall athletic events and school assemblies. Winners of the 2014 Georgia EMC Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award are:
