The Best of Both WorldsLondon offers the best of both worlds – big city excitement with a small town feel. It’s a city that knows how to have fun, and make everyone feel welcome.

FestivalsLondoners love to celebrate their diversity, and the city is home to numerous festivals year-round including Sunfest, Home County Music and Art Festival, Pride London Festival and Snowfest.

Sporting EventsLondon’s got game! The London Knights (hockey), the London Majors (baseball), and the London Lightning (basketball) keep the excitement going year-round – at prices a student can afford.

NightlifeA lively collection of night clubs, pubs, live theatre, as well as casual and fine dining, makes Richmond Row the place to be seen. You’ll find today’s hottest artists in the heart of downtown at the 10,000 seat Budweiser Gardens.

Movie fans can choose from a variety of screens around town, while those looking for a laugh can take in live comedy at Yuk Yuk’s.

ShoppingFrom the unique independent retailers along Richmond Row and in Wortley Village, to the trendy stores in suburban shopping malls, London is a great place to shop. Foodies will enjoy exploring the locally produced offerings at downtown’s Covent Garden Market, or Saturday at the Western Fair Farmer’s Market.

RecreationAffectionately called the Forest City, London boasts an extensive trail system for walking, running, biking or inline skating that runs along the Thames River – right onto Western’s campus. Winter sports can be enjoyed at London’s Boler Mountain, while indoor and outdoor ice rinks are a popular choice for skaters and hockey players.

In the summer, Londoners head to the small beach at Fanshawe Conservation Area, or take a short drive to Grand Bend (Lake Huron) or Port Stanley (Lake Erie).

CultureLondon is home to a thriving creative community, from the professional offerings of Orchestra London, the Grand Theatre and Museum London, to countless community ensembles, theatre troupes and specialty galleries.

Getting HereLocated in the heart of southwestern Ontario, driving to London from Toronto, Windsor and many places in the United States is easy. Via Rail and Greyhound have terminals downtown, and WestJet, Air Canada, and United Airlines fly out of the London International Airport.

Frequently Asked Questions at SAO

1) Do we have to register in advance to attend an SAO day?Yes. Due to the number of students and their guests attending SAO and our efforts to make this a wonderful experience for everyone, we will NOT be able to accept drop-in arrivals. Only those students and parents who have registered online or by phone can be accommodated.

www.sao.uwo.ca

2) What if I am unable to come to campus for an orientation day?Students living more than four hours away from London qualify for telephone / skype program advising. Students can speak with an advisor and ensure that they have covered their requirements for programs they wish to pursue.

You may book an appointment online if you live outside of Ontario or you are an International Student. If you live inside Ontario but more than a four hour travelling distance, please call us to book an appointment, 519-661-3070 beginning in early June.

On the day of your advising appointment, be sure to have your proposed course selection, your First Year Calendar, and questions ready. Allow approximately 30 minutes for your appointment. As a follow up, you will plan your timetable and use Western’s online registration program to register for your courses.

3) How should I prepare for my SAO appointment?Review course descriptions and program information in the First Year Calendar. Make notes about required courses and courses that interest you. If you would like to see our full academic calendar, check our website at: www.westerncalendar.uwo.ca

Bring your First Year Calendar with you to SAO. Write down questions you may have about Western, the City of London and/or university in general. Plan to spend most of the day at Western. Should you not be available for the day, please notify us.

Expect your orientation to last a minimum of five to six hours.

4) Should I book a campus tour for the same day?The SAO program offers brief campus tours as an optional part of SAO. Each tour includes seeing one suite-style and one traditional-style residence. These tours are part of the SAO day and you do not need to book a separate tour. The SAO tour lasts approximately 1.25 hours.

If you are unable to attend a tour on your SAO day, but still wish to see the campus, you may join one of our tours on another day or book a separate campus tour at welcome.uwo.ca/connect_with_western/visit_western. These tours are full campus tours and are offered by our Undergraduate Recruitment Office. Please expect the full tours to last a minimum of two hours.

5) Can parents and other guests attend?Parents and interested guests are welcome to attend SAO. We offer a concurrent parent program that provides information about Western’s programs and services available to first-year students. Space in the parent program is limited, and we can only allow up to two guests per student. Parents will attend their own sessions that include information about student services, strategies to help ease the transition to university, residence life information, student financial services information, and ways to assist your student in career planning. We ask that all guests register for the program with their student at: www.sao.uwo.ca

6) Will parents be included in the course advising session? The advising sessions at SAO are intended to be an opportunity for first-year students to interact one-on-one, with an academic advisor or faculty member from their faculty/program. It is important to discuss

course selection with your student before attending the SAO program.

7) Can I stay overnight? We have two styles of accommodation to suit your preferences. Ontario Hall, our brand new residence, is a Bed and Breakfast in the summer months and can accommodate you in semi-private, suite-style rooms. This state-of-the-art new facility is conveniently located at the corner of Western and Sarnia Roads, and has easy access to parking and countless other amenities.

9) Are there services for students with disabilities?Yes, Western provides services for students who have disabilities. If you require any special arrangements in order to participate in your SAO day, please contact the coordinator at [email protected] or 519-661-2111 ext. 85183.

To prepare for fall courses, students with disabilities are encouraged to call Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) or visit their website during the summer to explore available services, which include a summer transition program for students with learning disabilities.

Academic accommodation must be requested during the summer, as soon as possible after students register for courses. Later requests will be considered, however accommodation may not be arranged in time for first-term examinations.

Please note that academic accommodation and related assistance provided at Western may differ from that provided by an individual’s previous educational institution. Individuals contemplating attending Western are encouraged to consult with SSD regarding accommodations that the University would provide for them prior to making a final decision about attending Western.

To arrange a consultation or to obtain information about requesting academic accommodation and documentation requirements, call: 519-661-2147 or visit: www.sdc.uwo.ca/ssd

10) How do I register for courses?Once you have received advising for your courses, you may then proceed to register for your courses. If you attend SAO in person, we will assist you with creating your personalized timetable and show you how to register for your courses.

If you receive telephone counselling, you select your courses by following the registration instructions found online at: http://www.registrar.uwo.ca/general-information/how_to_guides/step_by_step_guide_to_registration.html

Call our Registration Help Line at 519-661-2100 if you require assistance with course registration using Western’s Student Center system. For questions regarding course selection and/ or academic progression please contact your Department or Faculty.

If you are unable to attend SAO, you have the option of registering for courses using the instructions found above but it is our recommendation that you have

your course selection confirmed by an academic advisor. SAO is the best way to facilitate this process.

11) What is the deadline for course selection? You are not required to wait for your SAO day before registering for courses, however we do suggest that your courses be reviewed at SAO. We will provide you assistance to make any required changes during your SAO day.

The last day for online web registration is September 10*. The final day to add a full course or a first term half course is September 12*. Once SAO ends, you must obtain any academic counselling you may need through the Dean’s Office of your Faculty of registration.*Dates may be subject to change.

Affiliated University College students obtain counselling through the appropriate Registrar’s Office at their College.

www.brescia.uwo.cawww.huronuc.on.cawww.kings.uwo.ca

12) How many courses do I take?Full-time students normally register in 5.0 courses. (If you register for 3.5 courses or more, you are considered a full-time student and must pay full-time fees.)

Scholar’s Electives students take 5.5 courses in their first year.

13) What if I want to change my course selection? You can use the online registration system until September 10* to make course changes (pending course availability). The final day to add a full course or a first term half course is September 12*. (*Dates may be subject to change)

14) Why do I need a student card and how do I obtain one?The Western ONECard is both your campus identification card (required for all final exams) and a convenient, easy, and safe way to make purchases and use services on campus including: libraries, the campus recreation centre (gym), meal purchases, parking, door access, and vending machines. 2. Apply for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP)osap.gov.on.ca

The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is the primary source of assistance for Canadian citizens/permanent residents of Ontario and provides need based loans for eligible students. OSAP is designed to assist students to meet education costs but it does not normally meet the full financial needs of students.

Eligibility is based on an assessment of each student’s needs and personal resources. If your OSAP loan is insufficient, or if there has been a change in your family circumstances after the initial assessment, a review may be in order. Should this be the case, or if you experience other financial problems, sign on to your Student Services page to book a financial aid appointment.

Students can apply for OSAP on-line at osap.gov.on.ca. To have your tuition deferred for OSAP you must complete the application process by June 30th. If you apply by June 30th and your first installment of funding covers your first installment of fees, your tuition will automatically be deferred to OSAP.

3. Non-Ontario Students and Financial AssistanceYou can apply for assistance through your provincial Ministry of Education. Each province in Canada has their own application process; please visit the appropriate provincial website for more details.

4. International StudentsThe Ministry of Employment and Immigration requires all international students to prove that they have adequate resources before they may be admitted to Canada. Consequently, a bursary will normally be awarded only if there is evidence that circumstances have changed since your arrival in Canada. Obtain information about the Visa Student Bursary Program from the International Student Centre, WSS 2120.

5. Apply for Admission BursariesFirst year students applying for admission to Western’s main campus directly from secondary school can apply for Admission Bursaries and need based awards through the online Admission Bursary Application.

Bursaries are non-repayable grants and range in value from $250 - $4,000.

To be eligible, you must demonstrate financial need and be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada.

Once a student has submitted an application for admission to a program at main campus they can access the Admission Bursary application. The Admission Bursary Application becomes available by the end of January each year. The application and the deadline to apply on this application can be found at www.registrar.uwo.ca/student_finances/bursaries.html

Sign on to your Student Services page to book a financial aid appointment.

8. Understand Tuition Fee Payment and Refund PoliciesTuition fee payment and refund policies are currently under review. See www.registrar.uwo.ca/student_finances/fees_refunds for more information on this policy..

9. Pay your FeesYou can make a payment by Internet banking (in the payee list, look for “University of Western Ontario” and select “Tuition” - your Western student number is your account number), by cheque or money order, in person, or mail to:

Residence Life at Westernwww.residenceatwestern.cahousing@uwo.ca519.661.3547Facebook: Rez Life WesternTwitter: @RezAdmissions

An Amazing Residence Experience: Western’s nine student residences are some of the best in the country. In fact, Western’s residences received the highest marks in The Globe and Mail’s student satisfaction survey for eleven consecutive years! Every year, students tell us that the #1 thing they like about living in residence is making friends and being part of a community.

Easily Meet New Friends: You will have a unique opportunity to meet a diverse mix of friends, get to know others who may be taking similar courses and get an academic edge about life on campus.

Get Connected to the Campus: Residence halls bustle with student activities geared toward helping you get acquainted with university life. Study skills programs, intramural sports, cultural events, movies, and coffee houses are just a few of the many activities waiting for you at Western. Aside from the close proximity to classes and the libraries, other advantages of residence life include being a vital member of a floor community, having the support of fellow residents, orientation leaders (sophs) and staff, and getting involved with university happenings while living in the heart of campus.

Guaranteed accommodation: If you are a single student, coming directly from high school, and you have received an offer of full-time, first-year admission by mid-May, then accommodation is guaranteed. Western will hold a place for you in residence provided you respond to your residence offer by submitting your required residence prepayment by the assigned due date.

A flexible meal plan on and off campus: Vegetarian? Food allergy? A benefit unique to Western is that dining halls are located within the residence halls – a real advantage in the winter months. We offer a selection of menu choices that will satisfy many dietary needs or restrictions. With residences’ varied menus and take-out items, after-hours snack bars, and options at off-campus restaurants that accept Western meal plan cards, you’re sure to find something appealing to eat.

Finding the right roommate: Before finalizing your room assignment, Housing will take a close look at your housing preferences and interests, then match you with a complementary roommate. If you have a friend coming to Western, let us know and we’ll be sure to place you together.

Living-Learning communities and Faculty Floors: Connect with people who share your interests! Whether your passion is fitness, leadership, sustainability, or volunteer work, we have a learning community floor that will suit your lifestyle. Here’s a great idea – live with students from your own academic program on our faculty-based living-learning floors.

RezNet – Residence Internet Access: Western’s residence network system, RezNet, provides fast, on-demand access to the Western campus network and the Internet. With separate network connections in each room, you’ll never have to share your connection with your roommate. Most residents subscribe to RezNet and find it plays an important role in their academic success.

Safety first: Front desk staff are available in most residences during the day, and are accessible by telephone 24/7. Student staff members live on each floor and a professional manager lives in each residence to help respond to any situation. If you’re studying late on campus, members of the Western Foot Patrol can walk you back to residence safely. Our Campus Community Police Service and a team of first-aid responders are always available in the event of an emergency.

Staff support: Need help with your studies, or information on campus resources? Looking for someone to talk to? Your residence staff member is here for you, just down the hall.

Academic support: Worried about the pressures of academic life? Western residences offer many resources to help, including workshops on how to write multiple choice exams, essay writing tips, study groups, faculty-based living and learning communities and get-to-class breakfast clubs.

Residence in second year too? We have plenty of options for you to live in residence beyond first year. Applications are available online in mid-November. As a bonus: if you enter university with a 90 per cent average or higher, and live in residence during first year, we’ll guarantee on campus accommodations for your second year – as long as you reapply by the deadline.

Living off campus: Western provides a self-serve Off-Campus Housing Service, which lists available student housing throughout London.

Residence accommodation for families: If you’re married, have a partner, or have children, you are eligible to live in Platt’s Lane Estates. This complex of university-owned apartment buildings and townhouses is located on a 20 acre park-like setting close to University Heights Public School and Western Child Care. Applications for one, two, or three bedroom units are available on our website.

For me, Western had one of the most progressive engineering programs in Canada, and it houses the top business school in the world. It has an extremely talented and diverse faculty, but it offered so much more than academics. Western has consistently ranked the highest in providing the best student experience because of three main reasons: 1) the opportunities it provides students to thrive, develop and succeed 2) a strikingly beautiful campus and comfortable and welcoming residences and 3) the spirit and sense of community that every Western student feels.

Western is a place of possibilities, and becoming involved offers the opportunity to take advantage of some of these.
