WELCOME TO IDW

Dear Exhibitors I am pleased to open registrations for International Dairy Week 2014. Our team is now in full swing to provide you with a week of activities showcasing the wonderful Australian dairy industry. We again welcome and thank Semex, Ruralco Holdings and The Greater City of Shepparton as naming right sponsors of the week. Thank you to those Exhibitors who provided us with feedback on the 2013 event. We have been working, with the assistance of the Greater City of Shepparton, to fix the power issues that caused concern at IDW 2013. As well the refurbishment of Wilson Hall has been completed so I look forward to enjoying that facility in 2014. As Australia’s premier dairy event, IDW has become an expo of events for the dairy enthusiast and we aim to provide something for everyone. We are committed to providing free entry into IDW to assist you and your families to be able to attend. We also welcome the many dairy businesses that sponsor and take part in IDW as without their continued support IDW would not be as successful as it is. The National Illawarra, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Ayrshire, Jersey and Holstein Shows will be held from Tuesday through to Thursday and I am really thrilled with the panel of Australian and International experts who have accepted the job of judging the tremendous cattle that breeders work hard to present at IDW. The ABS Australia/Ridley Dairy Feeds National All Breeds Youth Show is growing in leaps and bounds and continues to be a wonderful opportunity for youth to enter the showing world. We are particularly keen to see this show grow and develop and ask all Exhibitors for their support in providing our youth with animals to lead. In 2014 IDW are thrilled to introduce some new Awards for the National Breed Shows. These include:

• Feature Breed – IDW have introduced the concept of a feature breed and in 2014 this breed to be showcased will be the Guernsey Breed. A prominent Judge has been selected and prize money has been increased.

• Premier Sire - to be judged for each of the 6 National Shows and presented to the Sire’s owner. • Best Exhibitor Display - this award will be judged by a panel and awarded to the best displayed and maintained

team at IDW, divided into two sections - (a) Two to five head; and (b) Five head and over. To be sponsored by the Royal Agricultural Show Society of Victoria.

• A new group class for the Ayrshire Show. A Pen of Three Females Owned by the Exhibitor. The trophy for this class will be in memory and recognition of Eric & Sylvia Eagles. Entry is required for this class.

• A Health for Profit Class - to be sponsored by Viking Genetics. More details in due course. I am also pleased to announce that we will conduct the Sheri Martin Memorial Youth Showmanship Classes as a separate event on Youth Day (Monday). IDW are keen to give more time, focus and concentration on this very important group of classes for our young people. The commercial field days will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday and I ask that you encourage all in the dairy industry to visit this spectacular display of commercial products and technology. Some wonderful sale catalogues are being prepared and for those wishing to add to their herds there will be opportunity to purchase at these sales. We will again present a wide range of seminars for you to attend during the week and also provide many opportunities for you all to network and foster the friendships that become so important to us. We will be sending out regular e-newsletters so please make sure we have your email address so that you can keep updated with IDW news and event requirements. I hope that you will take the opportunity of entering your cattle in a show at International Dairy Week and I look forward to seeing you all at the Happy Hour on Sunday 19

th to kick off IDW 2014.

Kind Regards

Brian Leslie On behalf of the IDW Committee

INVITATION TO CHURCH SERVICE

Avonlea Holsteins

200 Manks Road, Fiveways, Victoria. AUSTRALIA. 3977

Ph. 03 59981027

Mobile Ph. 0409 965871 Fax. 0359981837

Email [email protected] October 6, 2013. Dear Fellow Exhibitor, As Cherie and I sat down to write this years invitation letter, we glanced back over last years and felt that alot of what we said seems to be appropriate to include again this year. Another year has come and gone again and with that has come many challenges. Some of them occur daily, some of them are ongoing...the rise in operational costs and an extremely wet winter in Gippsland among them. Some of these challenges are perhaps things that only you and those close to you would know about. And for all of us, in farming, the challenges that come can at times be overwhelming. It doesn’t matter who we are, we all face them. For me, knowing that there is a God, who wants to go with me through every challenge that I face gives me enormous strength and courage to face the trials of life as they come. Recently there were some significant challenges that we faced and in my daily devotion Psalm 61 verse 2 came to my attention. “When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” To know that there is someone higher than me and bigger than any situation we face is an enormous sense of comfort and encouragement. When we started this church service back in 1997 it wasn’t because we wanted to add a religious component to IDW, it was because we wanted to offer an opportunity to connect with the God who created us, knows us, gave his life for us and offers us hope no matter where we are at. Once again we will have contemporary style worship. This year Rob McIntosh of Woodside Park Holsteins is going to come and share some thoughts that will encourage and draw us closer to God. Rob is well known and highly respected having served on the Genetics Australia board and a highly successful breeder. This event will be held in the main judging area from 9:30 to 10:30 am. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We would like to say thank you to Brian Leslie and Robin Barber for their support. We trust that this Dairy Week will be a significant one to every person involved. Sincerely, John and Cherie Gardiner

EXPLANATORY NOTES – HEALTH DECLARATION

PART 1 and PART 2

Herds that are not known or suspected to be infected, and have not qualified for one of the statuses in Part 3 by

testing, are classified as Non-Assessed. The risk that they are infected is determined by their location. If you are

unsure of your Zone, please contact your local state government animal health office.

The National Dairy BJD Scoring Scheme is a simple method of scoring ALL dairy herds in relation to their risk of

having, or spreading, BJD. Herds will have a score of 0 to 10 depending on where the herd is in Australia, the history of

Johne’s disease in the herd, the history and outcomes of testing for Johne’s disease, and the calf rearing practices in

the herd. Johne’s disease herd status information about Dairy Assurance Score calculation is available at

www.dairyaustralia.com.au/bjd.

PART 3

MN1 to MN3 are Monitored Negative statuses in the Australian Johne’s Disease Market Assurance Program for Cattle

(Cattle MAP). The herd’s approved veterinarian issues a herd status certificate that is valid for 12 months.

Check Tested, Tested 4 Year Old and Tested to MAP Standard are statuses allocated to herds that have had a

negative test by an approved veterinarian. A Check Test is a test of 50 adult cattle (2 years of age and older) in the

herd that are most likely to be infected in the previous 12 months. Tested 4 Year Old and Tested to MAP Standard are

tests of all or a large sample of the cattle over 4 year’s old and 2 years old respectively in the previous 24 months, and

these statuses can be maintained by a Check Test every 24 months.

An approved BJD control program is approved by the State or Territory animal health authority for an infected herd.

The authority allocated the herd status to reflect the stage of the herd’s progress. High Prevalence herds have more

than 4% of cattle (4 years and older) test positive by ELISA or have not been tested and Moderate Prevalence herds

have equal to or less than 4% test positive by ELISA. A Low Prevalence herd has 2% or less ELISA positives among

cattle that are 4 years and older (or 1.5% or less in cattle 2 years and older). Restricted 1 and Restricted 2 are statuses

for infected herds that have had one and two consecutive negative herd tests respectively in an office control program,

as per the Standard Definitions and Rules for BJD.

The herd is classified by the animal health authority as infected or suspect and has not been tested to achieve a status

under the sections above.
