We are so grateful for our partnership with the Muncie Community Schools’ Area Career Center for the use of the space to conduct our monthly meetings. Many forms of education have been taking place in our area. With partnerships from Ball State, IU Health, Ball Brothers Foundation, City of Muncie, and many area churches, we were able to teach healthy eating, preparation of food, distribute food vouchers for the farmers markets and build a walking trail at Longfellow School. The Muncie Public Library’s Connection Corner and Habitat for Humanity have contributed so much to the Whitely Community over the years. Without them we could not have implemented a much-needed program like the Tool Shed loan project. We are seeing a sense of pride by those using the tools, as they are maintaining and improving properties in our neighborhood. One of the best things about being involved with Whitely has been to see everyone coming together. Some of us have learned new skills, while others have brought to the table their skills and knowledge that has taken us to the next level. Many, many thanks to Drew Shermeta, Director of the Muncie Public Library Connection Corner for his countless hours helping with the Council’s many projects – we couldn’t have done this without him. It was a great experience partnering with the Shaffer Chapel Project, and what a great asset to our community. WCC committed to replacing the steps, making it handicapped accessible, and updating the landscaping. These efforts will be visible for years to come. In closing, I am so proud of what “WE” as a community have accomplished. I look forward to continuing to help Whitely Community Council grow and flourish. Cornelius Dollisoncompleted his three-year tenure as President of the Whitely Community Council in December of 2014. The Council thanks Cornelius for his tireless leadership, under which amazing things have been accomplished. WCC is excited to welcome Frank Scott as incoming President, and looks forward what lies ahead in 2015 !

What a busy and productive 2014 we had together. Thank you to each and every one of the volunteers and contributors that helped to grow and empower our neighborhood. So much has transpired since I took over as President of the Whitely Community Council in 2011, and the future of our community looks so bright.

This year we have increased attendance at our monthly meetings. Our average attendance is 63.

God’s Blessings on the work ahead, Cornelius Dollison

Whitely Community Council Monthly Meeting

Attendance at this years’ monthly Whitely Community Council meetings averaged 63 participants, significantly surpassing the attendance and participation of previous years. Monthly meetings provide an opportunity to update the community on the activity of the Council, to hear about new opportunities in the community from guest speakers, to celebrate accomplishments, and to give neighborhood residents a voice in the direction of their Council.

NEIGHBORHOOD STRATEGIC GOALS

Goal 1:BeautificationCultivate a physical space that reflects Whitely’s vibrant

energy by highlighting the assets of the neighborhood infrastructure, eliminating blemishes, and putting residents in touch with resources for distinguished property maintenance.

Goal 2:SafetyAdvance a neighborhood security strategy that improves

the well-being and confidence of residents by identifying best practices in similar communities, strengthening relevant partnerships, and instituting sustainable systems.

Goal 3:EducationCapitalize on the celebrated educational resources and

collaborations that exist within the neighborhood to spread a collective conviction that learning and wellness are top priorities that can be built into the lives of each individual and family.

Goal 4:WorkFoster the entrepreneurial spirit of residents, impart

fundamental work-readiness skills, and support local businesses in order to participate in the rejuvenation of Muncie’s economy.

Goal 5:PrideDevelop and commemorate a clear sense of community,

something that people connect to and want to participate in.

Goal 6:ResourcesFormalize the procedures that ensure fiscal responsibility

and accountability while pursuing diverse funding opportunities for initiatives designed to meet community needs.

Goal 7: MarketingIllustrate the activities and progress underway for Whitely

residents and Muncie at large in order to reinforce the Council’s mission and build momentum for the future.

Historic Shaffer Chapel Restoration

2014 offered many opportunities for celebration, including the launch of the Tool Shed Loan Program, and the renovation of Historic Shaffer Chapel. In the photo above, community members break ground for the new entranceway to the Chapel.

PROGRESS

Restoration Celebration

In August, the Muncie community gathered for a celebration of the restoration of Historic Shaffer Chapel. From 2012-2014, the Whitely Community Council raised $60,000 to replace the deteriorating front steps, add a handicapped accessible ramp, and beautify the exterior of the Chapel with landscaping.

Council Accomplishments

The Whitely Community Council had an impressive list of accomplishments in 2014. The following outcomes of our collective efforts are evidence that when we work together as a community, the possibilities are

endless.In 2014, WCC

increased engagement with and between various churches. SERVE week was another great collaboration, we had church sponsorship of strategic goals, and churches were instrumental in supporting our communications to the public.

2014 also saw increased popular participation in the work of

the Council. Our volunteer base continues to grow, and goal committees are increasing their activity. We have more members

than ever before, and a better organizational structure to which neighborhood residents can connect.

We are proud of the work we have done to support the social

interaction of our membership. General meeting attendance typically surpasses 60, and our Care and Concern Committee is working hard to connect with families. We are grateful to our Hospitality Committee, which provides meals at general meetings and for larger projects. The Council is proud of its work on the restoration of Shaffer Chapel. This project

has preserved a community landmark of tremendous historical value, though raising over $60,000 for renovations including new steps, handicapped accessible ramp and entrance, parking lot, landscaping and the new Shaffer Museum.
