INREACH is the format that CRV Saturday Science has developed during the school year

and is usually to a University Campus where equipment and student volunteer instructors

are available. In the summer Science and Energy trips take advantage of student vacation

time during the week when business and industry visits are available. The Key leaders are

Sue Palen, a former science teacher, and Bill Richards of Community Resource Volunteers.

Additional funding support this year came from the Joe D. Pentecost Foundation,

additional CRV funds, tuition support for their students from the Ovid Elsie Community

Fund AND much appreciation to CRV volunteers (Tom and Gordon), parent vehicle drivers

and host site volunteers from universities, business and industry.

The Michigan Space Grant

Consortium (MSGC) has an annual

meeting each fall. University

students and experts make

presentations. Most are ‘over my

head’. A few years ago I decided to

take some of our most interested

student participants. They

responded very positively to the

experience of attending. (Bill Richards)

Students are driving a model

hovercraft. Note control in

the hands of students. The

craft moves on a cushion of

air.

Students build a balsa plane. Instruction is on the

wing design and air foil that generates lift on an

airplane.

Learning about the size

and shape of the lens,

and building telescopes

to take home and

learning to use and how

to focus their T-scopes.

hovercrafts and telescopes (October and November)

These activities are hosted by UM Students for the

Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS)

CRV has 25 Lego Robotics kits. This year they were used at EE Knight in Elsie, the Catholic school in

Fowler, St Joseph in St Johns, a new CRV class for age 6 up, and a group of students in Lansing.

Most Holy Trinity School in Fowler

for the first time, included the entire

class in one full day of Lego robotics.

Central Michigan University Department of

Medicine provided the first CRV Health

Care workshop on Saturday January 30,

2015. Students participated in sports

medicine, exercise equipment, applying

support bandages, eye and ear

examinations and other health care related

experiences. The presenters pointed out the

variety of careers in health care.

Univ. of Michigan Aerospace Wind Tunnels and

Rocket Building (March 21, 2015)

This was the first opportunity to work in the wind tunnel laboratory. After an equipment orientation CRV students were

challenged to design a propeller blade, that when installed in the tunnel and when the tunnel was turned on; created

the highest level of electricity.

Building and launching

rockets is always an exciting

activity.

11 U of M student

engineers volunteered to

make this an exciting day.

This workshop is a good example of the CRV Inreach

format of taking students to the equipment locations.

Point using their workbooks, test their classroom lessons about Newton’s

Laws of Physics and how they are used in designing the rides.

MSU Annual Vet A Visit Hosted by the College of Veterinary Medicine - 4/18/2015

This event is all about animals and animal care. In terms of our group’s numbers it is usually the largest.
