5.3.3 Reports on cultural and sports activities/ competitions organised in the institution per year 2016-17 1. Independence Day (15.08.2016) was celebrated with great enthusiasm and respect by the teachers, students and non-teaching staffs. The National flag was hoisted by Principal and the students, teachers and other staff members sang the national anthem followed by the college hymn. The students of the Department of Teacher Education conducted a cultural programme which was divided into two parts. The first part was a musical skit with a mellifluous rendering of patriotic songs. The second part was a Patriotic Drama “UTTORON” written by a student of the Department. The other attractions of this programme were a drama which was composed and enacted by the undergraduate students of the College hostels and a poster competition. 22 students participated. 2. Inauguration of SCC Activity Clubs Session & publication of Kheyal Pata (wall magazine) on

01.09.2016---- SCC enjoys the vibrancy of a unique cultural club system known as the SCC Students‟

Activity Clubs. With the guidance of appointed teachers the club activities are conducted by the

students. Clubs include Literary Society, Debate Society, Western and Easter Music Clubs, Western and

Eastern Dance Clubs, Photography Club, Quiz Club, Drama Club, Debate Society, Painting Club. Every

year the session of the SCC Students‟ Activity Clubs are inaugurated with various cultural programmes

performed by some of the clubs (mainly Western & Eastern Music Clubs, Dance Club) and students of

the Teacher Education Department. The wall magazine of the Clubs titled Kheyal Pata is inaugurated

with contributions mainly coming from the first years in the form of write ups, poems, photographs and

paintings. The wall magazine is on display throughout the session on the walls outside the main library.

The Student Club Secretaries are introduced to the freshers on that day. On an average 150 students take

part and attend the inauguration usually held in the Assembly Hall. The clubs conduct various

programmes as far as possible throughout the year. The last two periods of Tuesdays are slotted for

Activity programmes in the main routine. This year the cultural programme was followed by all the

clubs meeting for the first time to chalk out their respective plans.

3. Panel Discussion on 06.09.2016--- The Debate Society organised an inter-college Panel discussion on

'The Changing Face of Student Activism in India in Recent Times', chaired by noted columnist Sri

Pradeep Gooptu. Students from Jadavpur University and Presidency University also participated. The

best speakers, as judged by the Chief Guest were given books as special prizes and certificates. There

were 10 students who participated in the competition apart from the substantial audience present. 32

students were present in the audience.

4. Photography Workshop by Sri Prasant Arora on 27.09.2016--- Sri Prasant Arora returned to the

College as a resource person for a photography workshop. His fame lies in his collection of profile

photographs of celebrities across the world which are personally signed by them. He showed many of

his works to the students and engaged in a lively discussion with them. Around 21 students did the

workshop and received certificates for it.

5. Annual Retreat 14.11.2016: This is a special programme organised annually for the Christian students

of the College. Every year a relevant theme is selected and seminars, activities, group discussions, skits,

etc are arranged to make the activity a success. The themes try to address various issues that affect the

youth and attempt is made to spread awareness and guidance to the students on such matters. The theme

was You Live Only Once. 105 Christian students and faculty participated.

6. Christmas celebrations: Scottish Church College is proud to have a choir and enthusiastic students who

make Christmas special for all at the college every year with grand performances. The theme for this

year was „Let all the dialects proclaim His coming‟. The choir sang songs in praise of Jesus from

different parts of India and in different languages showcasing how Christmas is celebrated in different

parts of the country. Students from other Christian colleges of the city participated in this year‟s

programme (30 from Loreto College, 8 from St. Paul‟s College, 4 from St. Xavier‟s College). These

students also performed in front of the audience. 36 of our own students took part in the programme.

7. Annual Activity Day held on 10.01.2017--- Every year the session of the SCC Students‟ Activity Clubs

is brought to an end with the celebration of the Activity Day in commemoration of the birth anniversary

of our illustrious alumnus Swami Vivekananda. As many as 13 intra-college competitions (Creative

Writing, Poster Painting, Photography, Debate, Extempore, Recitation, Western & Eastern Dance,

Western & Eastern Music, Rabindrasangeet (songs of Tagore), Mono Act and Quiz) are held in the first

half of the day judged by the faculty members. A prize distribution ceremony is held in the second half

of the day usually in the Assembly Hall or the MLB Auditorium. The first, second and third position

holders are given medals, books and certificates as prizes by the Chief Guest. On an average the number

of students participating ranges from 80 to 200 approximately. As stated above the activity session

began on 1.09.2016 and was brought to a close with a whole day of cultural competitions and

performances. The Chief Guest this year was Sri Sayan Bhattacharya, Education Officer, Indian

Museum and an alumnus of the College. Almost 184 students took part in the annual cultural

celebrations. During the prize distribution ceremony there were performances by the Teacher Education

Department students, the prize winners of performing arts, Dance Club, etc.

8. 21st January, 2017: To commemorate the birthday of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, the students of the

Department of Teacher Education had organized a beautiful cultural programme on 21st January, 2017

and they performed a musical skit named- „Netajir Priyo Gaan‟(Nataji‟s favourite songs). The

programme came to an end with some other cultural activities.

1. 15th

August, 2017: The students of the Department of Teacher Education celebrated the Independence

Day on 15th

August, 2017 by performing a cultural programme. The theme of the programme was

“Independence in Today‟s India” on which the students presented a skit titled, “Awakening”.

Subsequently, they sang a number of patriotic songs.

3. Open Session with Sri Chandril Bhattacharya on 07.11.2017--- The Literary Society organized an

Open Session with eminent literary figure Sri Chandril Bhattacharya. Around 91 students and faculty

members participated in a lively question and answer session with the author on various issues.

4. Quizmat Quonnection, 2017, on 05.12.2017--- The Quiz Club organized the first Inter-College quiz

competition for under 25 age group with around 31 teams of 2 or 3 members each. The 98 participants

came from Don Bosco School, Jadavpur University, Presidency University, IIT Guwahati and many

other esteemed institutions. The Quiz Master was Sri Samanway Banerjee. The winners were awarded

with mementos and certificates.

5. Christmas celebrations on 12th

December 2017--- The theme for this year was „Word became flesh‟ i.e.,

fulfillment of Word of God through Christmas messages and carols. This year also choirs of other

Christian colleges of the city participated (35 from Loreto College, 10 from St. Paul‟s College) and

enthralled the audience with their performances. Many of our own students took an active part in

making the celebrations a grand success.

6. Calemun2K18, Mock United Nations, on 08.01.2018 & 09.01.2018---The Debate Society organized

an intra-college Mock United Nations titled Calemun2K18 with 26 participants on each day. The topic

was „Refugee Crisis in Middle East‟. The first day was chaired by a resource person from Bhowanipur

Education Society College, Kolkata, and the second day was chaired by our faculty members. The best

delegates received special recognition.

7. Annual Activity Day held on 16.01.2018--- The activity session began on 29.08.2017 and was brought

to a close by the annual Activity Day like the preceding years. This was the 10 years anniversary of the

beginning of the Activity Clubs. The Chief Guest was noted poet Sri Srijato Bandyopadhyay. This year

the prize distribution ceremony was held in the M.L.B. Auditorium of the College. The Eastern Music

and Dance Clubs staged a stellar production of Rabindranath Tagore‟s Dance Drama „Chitrangada‟. The

Drama Club also presented their annual performance with an original skit. The students of the

Department of Teacher Education also presented a skit in remembrance of Swami Vivekananda and

Sister Nivedita. 85 participants took part in the all day fun fare.

Activity Session 2017-18

8. 23rd

January, 2018: The students of the Teacher Education Department, celebrated the birthday of

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, an eminent alumnus of the college, on 23rd

January, 2018 by coming up

with a delightful musical skit on “Netaji and Independence”. The tricolour was hoisted and a brilliant

cultural programme in the end brought the entire programme to a close. 5 students took part.

9. 26th

January, 2018: 11 students of the Department of Teacher Education celebrated the Republic Day

on 26th

January, 2018 with great enthusiasm. They participated in the flag hoisting programme at the

main building of the college. Thereafter a cultural programme was followed in the department by the

songs and the presentation of a documentary on “The Relevance of 26th

January in Present Day” in

which interviews of different people were taken on this theme by the students of the Department of

Teacher Education.

2018-19

1. On 8th

August 2018, at 3 p.m 7 students of semester III of session 2017-19 of the department of Teacher

Education organised a short program entitled „Baishey Shravan‟ to observe the death anniversary of

Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore. After garlanding the portrait of the poet, songs written by the poet were

sung by the students in chorus.

2. 15th

August, 2018: Scottish Church College celebrated the 72nd

Independence Day with patriotic fervour

on 15th

August, 2018. At 9.30 a.m., the teachers, non-teaching staff as well as students gathered at the

main building of the college and the National Flag was hoisted by the Principal. This was followed by

the College Hymn and the National Anthem. The Principal and Vice Principal along with the members

of NSS executed the Tree Plantation drive. In the cultural programme, inspiring and motivational

speeches were delivered by the Secretary of the College, Principal and Vice Principal on India‟s

independence. The students sang inspiring Bengali patriotic songs. A beautiful eastern dance was

performed on the songs „Vande Mataram‟ and „Saare Jahaan Se Acchha‟. A concluding speech was

delivered by the Senatus Secretary of the college after which the students along with the teachers walked

together in a procession through the neighbourhood holding colorful and meaningful placards prepared

by the students. The purpose of this procession was to make people aware of the essence of

Independence Day.

3. Workshop on Mock United Nations on 22.08.2018---- The Debate Society organized a Workshop on

Mock United Nations conducted by a team from Bhowanipur Education Society College, Kolkata. The

idea was to educate the interested students about the workings of the Mock United Nations and its

relevance in today‟s world with respect to the importance of dialogue, debate and discussions on crucial

socio-economic and political issues of international importance. Around 40 students attended the

workshop.

28.08.2018---- The session was inaugurated with similar cultural programmes as every year followed by

the meeting of the clubs. This year the Drama Club presented a special show titled „Magic‟, written and

directed by the students themselves.

5. Classes on the Mock United Nations by on 25.08.18, 1.09.18 & 11.09.18--- The Debate Society

organized three classes on Mock United Nations with lectures and interactions from the experienced

MUN participant Sehrish Hazarika, Jadavpur University. Around 40 students attended on each day.

6. Quizmat Quonnection, 2018, on 18.09.2018. --- The Quiz Club organized the second Inter-College

quiz competition for under 25 age group, with 36 teams of 3 members each i.e., 108 boys and girls

participants in the competition. The Quiz Master was Sri Samanway Banerjee. The winners were

7. A Freshers‟ Essay Competition was organized by the Literary Society on 11.09.2018. There were 8

participants. Their contributions were considered for proposed magazine to be published by the Society.

8. Annual Retreat 2.10.2018— The theme was The Plan, Jeremiah 29:11. The programme is scanned and

attached to the list of participants. Several activity sessions were conducted among the participating

students (145 in number) with Bible Study done by Rev. Deacon Prasant Bhosle.

9. Drama Workshop on 09.10.2018--- A Drama Workshop with Sri Soumitra Basu, noted theatre and TV

personality was conducted with 39 interested students.

10. A Food Fest cum exhibition was held in the Department of Teacher Education of Scottish Church

College on 12.10.2018. 33 students prepared various delicacies on their own which were purchased by

the teachers, students and other staff members. Also an exhibition cum sale of handicrafts and various

handmade accessories made by the students was organized. The occasion was graced by the presence of

the Principal, the Vice Principal, the Senatus Secretary, the Bursar and other staff members of the

college.

11. Christmas celebrations on 5th

December 2018—The theme for this year was „Unto us a Child is born‟.

The programme tried to portray that Christ was born so that all may become one in Him. Many of our

students took part wholeheartedly and performed in front of a packed audience. Outside participants

included 40 from Loreto College and 10 from St. Paul‟s College. Pictures below.

12. 26th

January, 2019: To celebrate Republic Day, the tricolour was hoisted by Vice Principal followed by

the college hymn and the National Anthem. A cultural program was organised in the Assembly Hall of

the College, where speeches were delivered by the Vice Principal, Senatus Secretary and a selected

student of the College. Students of the Department of Teacher Education paid a melodious tribute

through a musical skit named „Rabindranath, Swadeshikata o Prajatantra Divas‟. This was followed by a

vote of thanks and reading of the preamble of the Constitution.

13. Annual Activity Day held on 22.01.2019--- The Activity session began on 28.08.2018 and the Activity

Day celebrating Swami Vivekananda was held like the preceding years to bring it to a close. This year

the college also celebrated Nataji Subhas Chandra Bose‟s birth anniversary as well. The Chief Guest

was noted singer, composer, writer, director Sri Anindya Chatterjee and Smt. Nandini Sharma, Vice

Presidint, 9 X Media. Both were alumnus of the College. The prize distribution ceremony was held in

the M.L.B. Auditorium of the College. The Eastern Music and Dance Clubs staged a stellar production

of Rabindranath Tagore‟s Dance Drama „Tasher Desh’. The Drama Club also presented an original skit

based on the film Sholay. The students of the Department of Teacher Education also presented a skit in

remembrance of Swami Vivekananda. The programme began by paying tribute to Late Sri Mrinal Sen,

the celebrated director who was an alumni of the College. The Vice Principal enlightened the students

by saying a few words about him.

14. CaleMUN, Inter-college Mock United Nations Competition held from 28.02.2019-1.03.19--- The

first Inter-college Mock United Nations Competition, CaleMUN 2019, was held from 28.02.2019-

1.03.19 with participants from all over Kolkata including, Presidency University, Jadavpur University,

Loreto College and others. There were 91 participants. The winners were given cash prizes and

certificates. The Debate Society collaborated with the RICE Foundation, Catalyst and Erudite for the

15. The department of Teacher Education celebrated the prestigious occasion of Tagore’s 158th

birth

anniversary (9th

May, 2019, 25th

day of Bengali month Baishakh) on 11th

May, 2019 with great

enthusiasm. 19 students endeavoured to pay their homage to the chief exponent of Bengali literature and

culture. The programme was inaugurated with Tagore‟s image being garlanded. After that with a brief

introduction about the significance of the day, the programme was followed by the cadences of

Rabindrasangeet, Tagore‟s songs, simultaneously presenting dance performances and reciting Tagore‟s

poems from his oeuvre. Two of the students were painting portraits of Rabindranath Tagore during

various consecutive activities of the programme to add extra élan to the event. Thus the cultural

programme came to an end successfully with a speech by the Head of the department regarding the

relevance of Rabindranath Tagore at present times.

2. 15th

August, 2019: To celebrate the 73rd

Independence Day on 15th

August, 2019 the teaching staff, non

-teaching staff and students gathered at the main building of the college and the National Flag was

hoisted by the Vice Principal. The speech of Vice Principal had lent a different dimension to the

programme which upheld the true spirit of independence. 39 students of the Teacher Education

Department conducted a cultural programme subsequently which consisted of the patriotic songs of

Rabindranath Tagore and Mohini Chowdhury. A dance performance was delivered on the flute track of

Hariprasad Chaurasia which was composed on the patriotic song “Sare jahan se achha”. It was followed

by a fascinating mime performance with the aim to revive the moral values and responsibility of every

citizen. Finally, the programme came to an end with national anthem.

September, 2019: The department of Teacher Education, Scottish Church College celebrated the

September, 2019 through a Drama

Competition based on the theme of „Satyagraha‟ according to NCTE direction to conduct various

activities on Gandhiji on the occasion of his 150th

Birth anniversary. The students were divided into

four groups for the competition. The drama of the first group was entitled as „Satyameva Jayate‟ where

the relevance of truth and its violation was enacted by the students. The second group enacted a family

story to portray discrimination in their drama „Samayer Pothe‟ (in the path of time). The third group

portrayed „Satyagraha‟ in the background of Quit India Movement. The fourth group enacted the drama

„Adarsho ki Sudhui Galpokatha?‟ (Is idealism merely fictional?) to depict communal disharmony and

corruption in the present society. The fourth group emerged victorious. Dr. Mousumi Manna, Associate

Professor, Department of Economics, Scottish church College was invited to grace the occasion as Judge

and to declare the winner of the Drama Competition.

5. 12.11.2019 Annual Retreat: The theme for this year was the 5 Gs Google, Games, Gossip, Grace and

Gospel. Mr. Alexander Mathew, Group Captain, Indian Air Force spoke on Google and Games; Sri

Indra Chakraborty, IPS, CID, WB spoke on Gossip and Rev. Martin Pakhare, College Chaplain spoke

on Grace and Gospel. The students participating performed a skit. 21 students participated.

6. 3. 12. 2019 Christmas celebrations: The college witnessed its annual Christmas celebrations with as

many as 45 students participating and many were presnt as audience along with the faculty. A modern

day interpretation of Nativity was acted out by students. Scottish Church Collegiate School, Bishop‟s

College and Loreto College sent their choirs to perform. Santa Clause and Felix Navidad completed the

7. 21st

December, 2019: A Food fest and Exhibition was held in the Department of Teacher Education,

Scottish Church College on 21st

December, 2019. Students prepared various delicious food on their own

and put them up for sell to the Teachers, other students and other staff members of the college. They

also arranged for some games, photography and painting exhibition. An exhibition cum sale of

handicrafts and various handmade accessories made by the students of the department was also

organized. The programme was a grand success.

8. 22nd

January 2020: The College celebrated enthusiastically the birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

(23rd

January), one of the greatest alumni of the College, at M. L. Bhowmik Auditorium on 22nd

January,

2020. The Secretary of the College, Principal and Vice Principal were present on that occasion and

addressed the students. A cultural programme was organised by the students of the department of

Teacher Education which included patriotic song recitals and a solo dance performance. Throughout this

programme, two of the students painted portraits of Subhas Chandra Bose.

9. 26th

January 2020: The Scottish Church College celebrated the Republic Day on 26th

January 2020, on

this auspicious occasion, the tricolour flag was hoisted by the Principal after a rendition of the College

Hymn and the National Anthem. A cultural programme was organised in the College Assembly Hall

where speeches were delivered by the Principal and Vice Principal. A very relevant and contemporary

musical skit was presented by the students of the department of Teacher Education to celebrate the day.

10. A Literary Society Programme on “Literature in Electronic and Social Media Today” was held on 25th

February, 2020 with RJ Somak and RJ Agni from Radio Mirchi as Chief Guest. 153 students

participated and asked many relevant questions pertaining to the theme.

11. An under -25 general Quiz named Quiz-e-Cale was held on 26th

February 2020 with Mr Samannay

Banerjee as the Quiz Master, where 30 teams with 3 members each i.e., around 90 students from

different colleges of Kolkata participated.

12. An inter college photography contest named Cale-light and Lens was held on 29th

February 2020

where around 14 students from different colleges of Kolkata participated. All photographs were

collected online and displayed in soft copy on the day of the competition in front of the judges. Winners

were then announced by the judges Mr. Anirban Dutta and Mrs. Preeti Roychowdhury.

13. Scottish Church College Annual Activity day was celebrated on 3rd

March 2020 to mark the

birthday of Swami Vivekananda, most illustrious alumni of the college. On 2.03.2020 the Activity

session was drawn to a close with the Activity day where almost 187 students participated in different

intra college competitions held throughout the day like every year. The programme began with the

College felicitating Padma Shri Kazi Masum Akhter, a former student of History department of the

college for the receipt of the highest civilian honour from the government i.e., Padma Shri, recognising

his valuable work in the field of education for the underprivileged. Noted Bengali film and television

actor Subhajit Dutta, an alumni of the college was the Chief Guest this year.

August 2020: Intra College MUN organised by the students of the Debate Society under the

guidance of the Activity Clubs. During the pandemic lockdowns, the entire competition was conducted

virtually. Almost 30 students participated with much enthusiasm.

2. 15th

August, 2020: Amidst the ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic and the guidelines associated with it, the

students of the Department of Teacher Education, Scottish Church College, celebrated the 74th

Independence Day online using Google Meet platform. Students prepared a pre-recorded video of

various performances on patriotism and it was played on the programme. The programme also included

songs and dance performance by the students on patriotism. The dance performance was accompanied

with a live painting session. Some students also presented their paintings on relevant themes. The

programme came to an end with singing of the national anthem. 9 students participated wholeheartedly.

3. 2nd

October, 2020: Despite the ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic situation, students of the Department of

Teacher Education, Scottish Church College celebrated the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, on a

virtual platform on 2nd

October, 2020. A tribute was paid through a virtual programme using Google

Meet platform to the great leader of our nation. 5 students participated with faculty members to make the

programme a success.

4. A virtual Chritmas 2020 was celebrated amidst the pandemic as Christian students and teachers came

together to make a video of love and hope and wish everyone a Merry Christmas. The video was made

5. Celebration of National Youth Day (Online) 12th

January, 2021:

The programme was organised by the students of the Teacher Education department to celebrate the

birthday of Swami Vivekananda, an alumni of the college and National; Youth Day. It started with an

inaugural song that happened to be one of Swami Vivekananda‟s favourite. It was sung by one of the

students from the department. To rekindle Swamiji‟s thoughts on education, students presented a audio

drama, and one student recited a poem in English "Blessings to Nivedita" composed by Swami

Vivekananda on the occasion. Students read out from popular books on Swamiji to dicuss his love for

food. from the department read out the stories from the book. Swami Vivekananda also had great love

for physical exercise and sports. He described Yoga as controlling the senses, will and mind. Two

students from the Department presented a video containing yoga presentation with music in this regard.

The programme was concluded with the National Anthem. 14 students of Semester 3 participated.

6. Celebration of Netaji’s Birthday (Online) 23rd

January, 2021: -

Students from the Department of Teacher Education, Scottish Church College virtually celebrated the

birth anniversary of the revolutionary freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, an alumni of the

college. The programme started with a song of Rabindranath Tagore. To quote him “This freedom

implies not only emancipation from political bondage, but also equal distribution of wealth, abolition of

caste barriers and social inequalities and destruction of communalism and religion intolerance”.

Reflecting on these two students from the Department gave a simultaneous presentation of recitation and

painting. One of the students from the department tried to capture glimpses of his life as "Patriot of the

Patriots ", the glimpses included resigning from his civil service job to serve the nation, his evolving

dynamics with the Indian Congress, his formation of Indian National Army, imprisonment in various

jails over the span of 20 years, etc. A collage of anecdotes related to Netaji's life and songs were

presented to captivate and inspire the audience. The programme was concluded with the National

Anthem. 14 students of semester 3 took part.

7. Celebration of Republic Day (Online) 26th

January, 2021:

Students from the Teacher Education Department virtually celebrated the Republic Day 2021. The programme

began with the with the preamble song. Few students from the Department prepared a short documentary on

Constitution followed by a solo song which was beautifully sung with true spirit and essence of the country's

supreme law. There after a small presentation of painting recitation collage and a dance on the theme of

patriotism was presented. The Programme came to an end with our National Anthem. PICTURES OF

8. Celebration of Rabindra Jayanti (Online) 9th

May, 2021:

Department of Teacher Education celebrated the 160th

birth anniversary of Gurudeva Rabindranath Tagore

through the virtual programme "RobiKirone”. The programme begins with motivating speeches by the Principal

and Vice Principal. The inaugural song by the poet was sung in Bengali and English languages. A few students

prepared a skit on Nature and Tagore and presented it by reading, recitation and song. Some students recreated

some famous paintings of Rabindranath Tagore and presented them to the audience, in their short program

called " Kobi o Chobi” (Poet and Pictures). They also deliberated on the poet as an artist. 24 students

participated.

9. Inauguration of SCC Students’ Activity Clubs on 22.5.2021 in an online format was organised.

Students in huge numbers attended a lecture delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Soumitra Sengupta, Senior

Professor, Dean (Faculty Affairs, Student Affairs and Staff Matters), Indian Association for the

Cultivation of Science, Kolkata.

10. Activity Day 2021 was held entirely online during the pandemic. All the competitions were arranged

online, with some being live like debate and quiz while for the rest like music, dance, recitation, creative

writing or Mono act, the students submitted their documents or videos which were then judged by the

respective faculty. The prizes were announced in a online programme dated 14.06.2021. Sri Biswanath

Basu was the Chief Guest for the occasion. An alumus of the college, he is a popular television and

stage personality of Bengal. Videos of the winners were shown during the programme. The participation

of the students was noteworthy given the circumstances.
