[대표 예제] An Egyptian King wished to determine which of the
world’s languages was the oldest. He isolated two new born
infants until they began to speak; he assumed that, lacking any
pattern to imitate, they would naturally use the most primitive of
the languages. In time the King heard the children utter
something that was recorded as “bekos”, which turned out to be
similar to the Phrygian word for “bread”. Therefore Phrygian, a
language once spoken in Asia Minor, was held to be the first
language of mankind, at least, by his court. So the King

past for which you had little use and no desire. You realize that
the giver may have spent a lot of money on the gift and that it
was totally useless. You appreciated their thought, but the gift
itself was meaningless. It is possible for us to give similar gifts to
our teenagers. If we want our gifts to be emotionally effective in
showing love to our teenagers, then we must consider our
teenagers’ interests. Rather than buying something that interests
you, why not buy something that interests your teenager?
This can be done in a very simple manner. Just say to your
teenager, “If I should decide to buy a gift for you this month,
would you make me a list of two or three things you would like
to have? Be as _____________ as possible. Give me brand names,
colors, etc.” Most teenagers will be happy to give the necessary
information. If the information is not clear, there is nothing wrong
with asking your teenager to accompany you to the mall and
show you precisely what gift he or she would like to have. Then
you would not buy a CD that your teenager will never play, a
shirt he will never wear, or a dress she will find unfashionable.

[유제 4] Consider what happens when one person gives another
person a gift. First, the gift giver has to decide how much money
to spend. Is it an amount between $10 and $20 or between $50
and $80? After the dollar range is decided, the gift giver has to
decide what to buy. Will it be a book, a shirt, a gift certificate to
a restaurant, or what? Deciding what to buy requires the gift giver
to guess the preferences of the recipient. This is no easy task,
even if the gift giver knows the recipient fairly well. Often,
guessing preferences is done poorly, which means that each year
hundreds of thousands of people end up being given gifts they
would prefer not to have __________________. Every year, shirts go
unworn, books go unread, and closets are filled up with
unwanted items.
In 1993, Joel Waldfogel asked a group of students two
questions. First, he asked them to estimate the dollar value of the
gifts they received. Second, he asked the students how much they
would have paid to get the gifts they received. Waldfogel learned
that, on average, gift recipients were willing to pay less for the
gifts they received than gift givers paid for them. For example, the
gift recipient might be willing to pay $25 for the book that the
gift giver bought for $30. So, if the gift giver gave cash instead
of the gift itself, the recipient could then buy something that he
or she really wanted. When you don’t know the preferences of
the gift recipient very well, money might be the best gift.

[유제 5] A district mayor in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, is going
on an unusual leave for the birth of his newborn baby on
Saturday. He will be the first local government leader ever to do
so. Hironobu Narisawa, the mayor of the central Bunkyo district,
said he was aiming to change attitudes. Japanese workers are
famously reluctant to take time off after the birth of a child even
though Japanese law allows either parent to have up to a year
off. Mr. Narisawa's announcement has been front page news in
Japan these days.
No other local government leader, male or female, has taken
time off after the birth of a child. Nationwide, just one in 100
fathers takes any paternity leave. None of the male employees of
Bunkyo district has done so. Mr. Narisawa, whose son was born in

attitudes. However, Mr. Narisawa will not be entirely switching off
from work during his two-week leave. He is planning to remain in
the district in case of emergencies.

[유제 6] In 1912, the U.S. presidential election was in full swing.
Theodore Roosevelt was in the middle of a tough campaign, and
every day seemed to present a new challenge. But here was a
challenge that no one had anticipated. Three million copies of
Roosevelt’s photograph had already been printed for circulation
with a campaign speech. Roosevelt’s campaign manager discovered
a serious problem ― the photographer had not been asked for
permission to use the photograph. To make matters worse,
copyright law allowed the photographer to demand as much as
$1 per copy. No campaign could afford this price.
After carefully analyzing the problem, the campaign manager
sent the following telegram to the photographer: “Planning to
distribute three million copies of campaign speech with
photographs. Excellent publicity opportunity for photographers.
How much are you willing to pay to use your photographs?
Respond immediately.” The photographer did not take long to
send a reply: “Appreciate opportunity, but can only afford $250.”
How did the campaign manager turn around such a hopeless
situation so completely? He found the opportunity to create value
through agreements that made both parties ________________. The
photographer could gain a nationwide fame, and the candidate
could use his photos and win the election.

[유제 7] I recently went to buy an HM-70, a brand-new car. When
the salesman told me that it had cruise control, I asked, “What is
the problem to which cruise control is the solution?” Well,
apparently no one had ever asked him this question before. He
thought about it for a bit, and then he said, as his face
brightened, “Well, it’s the problem of keeping your foot on the
gas.” And I said, “Well, I’ve been driving for 35 years, and I’ve
never really found that a problem.” So then he said, “Well, you
know, this car also has electric windows.” So you know what I
asked him — “What is the problem to which electric windows are
the solution?” He was ready for me this time. He said, “Well, it’s
the problem of having to roll the windows up and down with
your arm.” I said, “Well, I never really found that a problem. As a
matter of fact, as an academic, I live a rather simple life and I like
the exercise of moving my arms occasionally.”
Well, the point is I bought the HM-70 with cruise control and
electric windows because you cannot buy an HM-70, without
cruise control and electric windows, whether you wish to or not.
Now, that raises an interesting point, which is that while
technology obviously increases options in many instances, it can
also limit options in other cases. People who are very enthusiastic
about technology are always telling us what it will do for us. They
almost never address the question of what it will __________ us of.

[유제 8] The human brain is not particularly sensitive to the
absolute magnitude of stimulation, but it is extraordinarily sensitive
to the differences. For example, if you are blindfolded and asked
to hold a wooden block in your hand, would you be able to tell
if a pack of gum is placed on top of the block? The right answer
is “It depends,” and what it depends on is the weight of the
block. If the block weighed only 30 grams, then you’d immediately
notice the 500 percent increase in weight when a 150-gram pack
of gum is added. But if the block weighed 5 kilograms, then
you’d never notice the 0.03 percent increase in weight. There is
no answer to the question “Can people detect 150 grams?”
because brains do not detect grams but they detect __________.
And the same is true for just about every physical property of an
object. Our sensitivity to the relative is not limited to physical
properties such as weight, brightness, or volume. It extends to
subjective properties, such as value, goodness, and worth as well.

[유제 9] Most managers want huge results with little risk. It just
doesn’t work that way. You’ve got to encourage risk taking
without penalty. Human beings by nature hate to lose. We’re
willing to take risks when there’s little downside, especially if we
can see a huge potential upside. But when things are going fine,
we shy away from taking risks. Not a good idea! In a corporation,
too often it’s one foul and you’re benched. But in the NBA, every
player is allowed six fouls per game. Company managers and
executives should establish a six‑foul rule, and make it known to
everyone.
Think about how some of the most successful coaches in the
NBA view fouls. If LeBron and Kobe end the game with zero
fouls, you know they’re not playing their best game. If they end
the game with five fouls, they’ve pushed it to the limit and
chances are they’ve scored more points, gotten more rebounds,
and gotten more steals. Once in a while, you foul out. That’s part
of the game. Winners know one thing all too well: You’re not
going to win every game. Let your players get their fouls.

[유제 10] When we consider that a hurricane can destroy millions
of trees all at once, such destruction can at first seem to be a
tragedy. Most people thought so when the hurricane of October
1987 struck in southern England. Yet it has since been realized
that the loss of about 15 million trees was never a national
disaster, and that the hurricane actually cleared much of the
forests and woodlands, making way for new growth. In effect,
such mass destruction was Nature’s way of opening a path for the
growth of the new.
Sometimes we can experience a complete revolution in our
lives in a way that at first appears to be a complete catastrophe,
but later proves to be a necessary “clearing out” in order to make
way for a new approach in thinking or living. Seemingly
unfortunate events such as divorce, leaving our country, or losing
a job can often change our perspective even if it doesn’t feel like
that at the time.
Like a sweeping hurricane, we sometimes need to experience
the strong winds of change to force us into a new and better
way of thinking and living that promotes new and vigorous
growth in certain spheres of our existence. At the time when the
winds are blowing furiously through our lives, we do not
recognize the possibility of new growth that may spring from the
disaster because we can only see the tragedy. When all is calm
once more, we may realize that every sweeping change holds

[유제 11] If you were asked to name the human brain’s greatest
achievement, you might first think of the impressive artifacts it has
produced ─ the Great Pyramid, the International Space Station or
perhaps the Golden Gate Bridge. These are some of the greatest
achievements indeed, and our brains deserve their very own
ticker-tape parade for creating them. But they are not the
absolute greatest. Even a sophisticated machine can design and
build any one of these things because designing and building
require knowledge, logic, and patience, of which sophisticated
machines have plenty.
However, there’s really only one achievement so remarkable
that even the most sophisticated machine cannot pretend to have
accomplished it ─ conscious experience. Seeing the Great Pyramid
or remembering the Golden Gate Bridge or imagining the Space
Station are far more remarkable acts than the building process
itself. What’ more, one of these remarkable acts is even more
remarkable than the others. To see is to experience the world as
it is, to remember is to experience the world as it was, but to
imagine is to experience the world as it has never been before
and as what it might be. The greatest achievement of the human
brain is its ability to imagine objects and episodes that do not
exist in the realm of the present, and it is this ability that allows

[유제 12] Imagine that you’re living in prehistoric times. You’ve

noise of a herd of giants moving toward your camp. Now, let’s
say that you’re able to bring any individual from the twentieth
century into your primitive setting to help you out. Who’s it going

someone like Michael Jordan or Arnold Schwarzenegger, I’d be
closer to getting you out of your predicament. The truth is that
intelligence in that environment had more to do with quick
reflexes, speed, strength, and agility than with E=MC2 or the New

We’re accustomed to associating high intelligence with the
bookworm and the academic. Yet by definition intelligence is the
ability to respond successfully to new situations. If your car breaks
down on the highway, who’s the most intelligent person for the
job? Is it someone with a Ph.D. or a car mechanic with a high
school education? Intelligence depends on the _________________. For
although intelligence tests consistently predict school success, they
fail to indicate how students will do after they get out into the
