Bloom where you're planted!
Written by George Whitten
An ancient legend tells of a king who walked into his garden one day to find almost
everything withered and dying. After speaking to an oak near the gate, the king learned
that he was troubled because he was not tall and beautiful like the pine. The pine
overheard their conversation and added that she, too, was upset, for she could not bear
delicious fruit like the pear tree. The pear tree heard his name and began to complain
that he did not have the lovely odor of the spruce. And so it went throughout the entire
garden.
Near the very edge of the garden grew a little daisy. As the king approached, he
noticed her bright little face, full of life. "Well, little flower," said the monarch, "I'm glad to
find that there is at least one happy face in my garden."
"Oh king," she said, "I know I'm little, and not many people notice me, but one day I
realised that you if planted me here, you must have had a good reason. So, your
majesty, I've determined to be the best little flower I can be!"
Our King has planted a beautiful garden. Not one of us is greater than the next. It is His
perfection.
We must come to a place where we trust that God has a reason for creating us the way
He has and has planted us in just the place he desired. Comparing ourselves with one
another will only make us wither. When we become satisfied in His creation (that is us),
that's when we'll find true happiness and we will shine.
Let's give God our all our disappointments and be determined to be the best that we can
be for Him!
We’re not, understand, putting ourselves in a league with those who boast that they’re our superiors. We wouldn’t dare do that. But in all this comparing and grading and competing, they quite miss the point.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Airshow Fundraiser
The school has now received the financial figures from our Airshow. We
will be able to share the news with school families, by letter, in the next
week, once the information has been shared with Campus Council. I can
let you know that it is an exciting amount which I can’t wait to share with
you!
The Committee has met and had a debrief of the event, recording things
that went well and things that need tweaking in 2015. If you have any
feedback that you would like to share that could be useful to add to our
reflections please drop me an email or catch me in the yard. Believe it or
not, initial planning will start shortly as we lock in the date and sponsors
for 2015!
Values for Lutheran Education
This term our Chapel is based on the
10 values that are the promoted and
lived in our Lutheran Schools across
Australia. All of the values come from a
Biblical principle. The over-arching
value, Love, is like an umbrella under
which all the other values sit. It is
based on God’s enormous love for
us…” “This is how much God loved the
world: He gave his Son, his one and
only Son. (John 3:16)
This week’s Chapel is presented by the Year F/1 Class, and they are
leading us in worship on the value “Compassion”. Next Friday we
welcome Year 1/2 to lead us in worship and the value will be “Hope”
We warmly invite any who can make it to join us for worship and a
chance to catch up over morning tea after Chapel.
Better Schools Survey
So far 13 of the 60 parent surveys sent out have been completed –
21.6%. We would love to get feedback from many to give a well-
rounded picture of where parents see our strengths, and define areas for
improvement. We really appreciate the time given to this. This Friday is
the final day that the survey will be on line, so let’s see if St Jakobi can
have a great return rate!
National Lutheran Schools Week
Next week the BARLE (Barossa and Region Lutheran Education) schools
will come together at Faith College to celebrate National Lutheran Schools
week.

To ensure the school is abiding by school policy and
student safety we are implementing a procedure for
students that arrive late or leave early.
When a student is late (after 9am) they will need to see
the front office and notify them of their arrival. A yellow
card will then be given to the student to give to the class
teacher so the teacher knows administration have been
notified.
The parent/caregiver collecting a student early will need
to collect a red card from the office to give to each
child’s teacher they are collecting. This again ensures
administration are aware of who is leaving hence our
records show the students currently on premises in case
of an emergency etc.
Please also remember to notify the school when you
child/ren are absent. Please call the office on
8524 4137 or alternatively please email at us
Late arrival & early pickup
of students Our Year 6/7 students will attend to represent our school,
along with students from Vineyard (Clare), Loxton Lutheran
School, Waikerie Lutheran School, Tanunda Lutheran School,
Good Shepherd (Angaston), St John’s (Eudunda), Redeemer
(Nuriootpa), Immanuel (Gawler) and Faith College. The theme
is ‘Forgiveness: the door to peace’.
Forgiveness is as much about the future as it is the past. The
journey of forgiveness lies constantly before us. Lutheran
schools are places where the joy and practice of forgiveness
can be lived out on a daily basis, where the life-changing
effects of forgiveness can be experienced, and where
reconciliation, made possible by the love of God through the
cross of Jesus Christ, enables everyone to be a peacemaker.
Playground Safety
During Term 1 five of our staff, Mr Adler, Miss Nappa, Mrs
Schaefer, Mrs Rice and Mrs Hannola attended Positive
Partnerships professional development. Although mainly about
students with Autism, the strategies they encourage benefit
many children. At the end of the course, attendees are asked
to pick a project to assist students at school, and our staff
picked ‘positive play’. The aim is to make play happy, safe
and positive for all. In the next couple of weeks you will see
and hear of various strategies being rolled out to assist our
students in this area.
As a school we are taking some time with students to stop and
reflect on the quality of play during break times. The front
office is finding that many children are coming up with bumps
as a result of play. We have had a refocus on the rules that
we ask students to abide by to promote safety. Those that
keep those rules are commended for their wonderful efforts;
those that are making unsafe choices, eg running in the high
traffic areas, or tackling during games, are heading inside to
do a rethink sheet about safe play choices. The rate of
children to the office has reduced dramatically, so these
measures are having a positive effect on student safety. As
part of the ‘positive play’ initiative, the staff are working
towards tangible rewards for those children who are making
excellent choices. Stay tuned for more from the staff in the next
newsletter sharing progress!
May God bless your week, Kathryn

Lyndoch & District Historical Society - Following in their Footsteps
People traveled great distances to join with the Lyndoch & District Historical Society to walk the former village of Hoffnungsthal
(Valley of Hope) on Sunday 19th May. Mrs Joan Haese (nee Zerk) led the group along what was the original street of
Hoffnungsthal from the site of the Church/School nearly 1 kilometre to the Cemetery.
The group of over 60, which included visitors with ages covering nine decades, shared stories as they saw the original village
well, grain thrashing floor, ruins of some stone dwellings and the site of the water tank. The village was settled in 1847,
primarily by a group of settlers from Posen in modern Germany who had arrived on the ship “Heloise”.
The village of Hoffnungsthal was abandoned 160 years ago when the area was inundated with up to 1.5 metres of water at
the end of a wet winter. Young and old hypothesized as to how, when and why the area fills with water. At present the area
is covered in lush pasture and even after healthy opening rains there is no surface water in sight.
At the end of the street, Mrs Haese was able to share stories of the Cemetery where 65 souls were interned over a 16 year
period. Little remains at the Cemetery but a good number of graves are marked with simple outlines using local stone. The
group found it interesting to see the remnants of the cellar cut into the hill side – it was used as a morgue!
After the devastating 1853 floods, most of the villagers moved over the hill into the Lyndoch Valley and formed a
congregation based at what is now St Jakobi Lutheran Primary School. Sunday’s gathering moved to the new “Valley of Hope
Centre” at St Jakobi where 5th generation descendant of an original Hoffnungsthal family, Rev Mike Semmler, facilitated
discussion over afternoon tea. He described the stories of Hoffnungsthal as part of the rich tapestry that binds together so
many people across Australia that have a Hoffnungsthal connection.
A number of stories were told including that of settlers from nearby Rosenthal (Rosedale) being fined for taking timber from
Hoffnungsthal. Those that grew up on neighboring properties reminisced of billycart races on the dry bed of the lagoon and
then swimming and diving from a rowboat when the lagoon was filled. Mr H.J. “Pete” Zerk told as sad story of a young
woman killed during a duck shooting expedition.
The Lyndoch & District Historical Society was overwhelmed by the numbers. Mr Kim Michelmore, Vice President, said “the
event was organized as part of History Month to promote living history – to get people involved and to discover the stories all
too often held in families” The proceedings of the day were recorded and will be edited to be part of the oral history
collection of the Society.
The Lyndoch & District Historical Society would like to thank the Kies and Haese families for access to the land together with
Grant Burge Wines (lessees of much of the land). A massive thanks to Kathryn Krieg, Principal of St Jakobi Lutheran Primary
School for use of the magnificent Valley of Hope Centre and providing afternoon tea.
