Welcome

Greetings!

As you make plans for all the great programs and activities you and your Girl Scouts can look forward to sharing in the months ahead, I want to encourage you to think about a central question. What is Girl Scout-ing really about?

For some, it’s about having fun and making friends…maybe forming life-long bonds and creating memories that will last a lifetime. For others, it’s about being part of a group…finding a place where you can belong and be yourself. For some girls and leaders, it’s about getting to see, learn and do new things…going to camp, tak-ing in a Broadway show, or even traveling to a far-off destination. Of course, at its core, Girl Scouting is about leadership…our great strength is helping girls discover, connect, take action and lead.

The wonderful and exciting truth is that Girl Scouting is about all of this, and so much more!

It takes a lot of hard work to deliver an exceptional Girl Scout Leadership Experience across our council. For-tunately, all of us, together, have the power it do the work of changing girls’ lives.

Our volunteers, parents, active girl members, program providers, sponsors, community supporters and donors are all crucial to the important work we do. Together, we are all integral parts of the puzzle that fit to-gether to make Girl Scouts the premiere girl leadership organization nationwide and a strong, well-respect-ed brand for more the 100 years.

The strength of our brand is seen in a prestigious and valuable accolade we earned this year. Harris Interac-tive, a major national market research and polling firm, named us the Youth Interest Non-Profit Brand of the Year. This is the first time Girl Scouts has topped the annual ranking, which gauges brand equity, consumer connection, and overall community recognition and standing. What’s even better is the 2012 Harris Poll found our brand second only to the American Red Cross as the most familiar nonprofit in the country.

Our aim, as we enter a new century of Girl Scouting, is to take our strong programming, message and brand and make them even more vibrant and vital. We are incredibly fortunate in our council to have a corps of 7000+ dedicated volunteers who are the key to making this happen. Volunteers are essential to our pro-gramming success, and the lifeblood that makes Girl Scouting possible.

Thank you for your commitment to Girl Scouting. By giving generously of your time, talents and financial resources you help us make Girl Scouts a “must have” experience for every girl.

Thank you for helping build girls of courage, confidence and character who make our world a better place.Yours in Girl Scouting,

Lora TuckerChief Executive Officer

Much more than a way to raise money, the Fall Product and Cookie Programs are hands-on leadership and entrepreneurial programs. Here are a few examples of how participating in the Cookie Program teaches Girl Scouts skills that will help them grow into leaders in their own lives, leaders in business and leaders in the world: 1. Goal SettingYour Girl Scout sets Fall Product and Cookie sales goals individually and with her team, creates a plan to reach them, and develops cooperation and team building skills all along the way!

2. Decision-MakingYour Girl Scout helps decide how her team will spend their Fall Product and Cookie money, furthering her critical thinking and problem solving skills that will help her in many aspects of her life.

3. Money ManagementYour Girl Scout takes Fall Product and Cookie orders, handles customers’ money and gains valuable and practical life skills around financial literacy.

4. People SkillsYour Girl Scout learns how to talk to, listen to and work with all kinds of people while selling Fall Product and Cookies. These experiences help her develop healthy relationship and conflict resolution skills she can use throughout her life.

5. Business EthicsYour Girl Scout is honest and responsible at every step of the Girl Scout Fall Product and Cookie Program. Her business ethics here reinforce the positive values she is developing as a Girl Scout.

IMPORTANT DATES:The Fall Product Program begins October 1st.

The Cookie Program begins January 1st.

The National Program Portfolio has two main parts – the National Leadership Journeys and The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting. Complemented by the Girl Scout Cookie program, Girl Scout travel and Girl Scout awards, the National Program Portfolio is designed to help girls develop as leaders and build confidence by learn-ing new skills. It also ensures that Girl Scouts at every level are sharing a powerful, national experience—girls together changing the world! There are three different Leadership Journeys series – It’s Your Story – Tell It!, It’s Your Planet – Love It! and It’s Your World – Change It!. Each series has separate books and awards for each grade level and a corresponding adult guide. The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting is where girls (and adults) can find exciting new badges, the 100th Anni-versary handbook, information on bridging and Bronze/Silver/Gold Awards, Girl Scout history, tradition and much more!Check out the Journey Maps and resources for everything you need to know to plan your Girl Scout year and tips on using the Journeys and The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting together!

The 15 Outcomes of the Girl Scouts Leadership Experience

Discover 1. Girls develop a strong sense of self. 2. Girls develop positive values. 3. Girls gain practical life skills. 4. Girls seek challenges in the world. 5. Girls develop critical thinking.

Connect 1. Girls develop healthy relationships. 2. Girls promote cooperation and team building. 3. Girls can resolve conflicts. 4. Girls advance diversity in a multicultural world. 5. Girls feel connected to their communities, locally and globally.

Take Action 1. Girls can identify community needs. 2. Girls are resourceful problem solvers. 3. Girls advocate for themselves and others, globally and locally. 4. Girls educate and inspire others to act. 5. Girls feel empowered to make a difference in the world.

All experiences in Girl Scouting incorporate the Discover, Connect, and Take Action keys to leadership. As girls take part in Girl Scouts, adults can review the outcomes, and the signs of these outcomes, to gauge the benefits of the experience. The signs of those outcomes reflect what the girls might think, say, or do – during and after a leadership experience – and help adults determine the success of the experience. Checking outcomes is like noting road signs on a journey - the signs that let you know you’re getting closer to your destination. Similarly, seeing age appropriate signs during Girl Scout activities let adults know that girls are achieving the intended outcomes. The 15 outcomes of the GSLE are below. For more detailed informa-tion by grade level, please refer to the resource “Transforming Leadership”.

Bronze AwardWelcome to the Girl Scout Bronze Award, a leadership adventure and the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. As you and your team plan and complete your project, you’ll develop more confidence, meet new people, and have the kind of fun that happens when you work with other Girl Scouts to make a differ-ence.

Bronze Award Requirements:Fulfilling the requirements for the Girl Scout Bronze Award starts with completing one Girl Scout Junior Journey. Each Journey you complete gives you the skills you need to plan and implement your Take Action project. When you go for the Bronze Award, you represent what Girl Scouts can achieve in their communi-ties. And, of course, you want to do that in a way that’s fun for you—and for everyone else involved, too!

Earning the Girl Scout Bronze Award involves completing a Journey, and then a suggested minimum of 20 hours building your team, exploring your community, choosing your project, planning it, putting your plan in motion, and spreading the word about your project.

The suggested hours help you think about your commitment to doing your very best with each step. That’s different for every Girl Scout, so these hours aren’t a rule, just a friendly reminder. You’re a Girl Scout, which means you will earn your award with courage, confidence, and character and make a difference in the world around you!

For more information on the Bronze Award, please refer to the Junior Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting or Re-source Sheets 28 & 29.

Please note: Bronze Awards are approved by your Bronze Award Advisor or troop leader. You are not re-quired to submit paperwork to the council office. Once your award is complete, your Bronze Award pin may be purchased from the Girl Scout Shop.

A Taste of JourneysWhat Journey are you taking??? Journeys are the GSUSA leadership development program; they are fully customizable to fit your girls’ interests and needs. The Girls Guide to Girl Scouting complements the Jour-neys and adds skill building elements to the program.

Join us as we explore options for each grade level. Leaders and girls are invited to sample a Journey from each Series: It’s Your World-Change It, It’s Your Planet-Love It, and It’s Your Story Tell It. Girls will try activi-ties from each, understand the theme of the book, and then choose which Journey to take.

Journey books are available at your local GS Shop or online at http://shop.gskentuckiana.org/c-79-journey-books-and-recognitions.aspx. Girl books are $7.42 and the adult guide/girl book combo is $15.90. Leaders must have an adult guide to lead the Journey.

You can reserve a private troop Taste of Journeys for $20.00 at a location of your choice; contact the GSLE Specialist in your cluster for additional information and to make reservations.

Journeys are the main Girl Scout resource. They are easy to use, include great activities and are fully cus-tomizable to fit your girls interests and needs. The Girls Guide to Girl Scouting complements the Journeys and adds additional fun to the program.

The first half of the adult guide includes general Girl Scout and Journey topic information. The actual Jour-ney activities start half way through the book (around page 20) with the sample sessions. This is where the fun begins!

The girl book from the Journey is just that for the girls. It is very important to remember that the girl book does not always follow the Adult How to Guide. The actual Journey program is all in the adult guide.

There are activities in the Adult How to Guide that sometimes focuses on certain pages of the girl book but the two books do not follow each other page by page. The girl book is designed for the girls to take home, read through, do the individual activities, etc. They should bring the book to meetings in case the meeting activities do focus on any of the group activities in the girl book.

Journey Program Boxes are available at your local PLC for check out. The fee is 4 weeks for $5.00 or 8 weeks for $10.00. Contact the CSR in your local PLC to reserve a box. Payment must accompany reservations. All boxes are reserved on a first come, first serve basis. A replacement fee of $15.00 will be charged if the box is not returned by the due date. For additional information on how to reserve a Journey box or for a reser-vation form go to the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana website.
