Mission: Our mission is to present innovative approaches to Shakespeare and other classic plays through professional productions that enrich the lives of people throughout the state of Maine. In its 43 seasons, TAM has presented more than 305 productions including 23 world premieres, entertaining audiences from 36 states and each of Maine’s 16 counties.

Education: This mission of all Theater at Monmouth education programs is to deepen understanding of, appreciation for, and connection to great literature. Objectives of all programs are: to build analytical and literacy skills; to inspire imaginative thinking and foster creativity; and to increase confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of community. We seek to expand partnerships, programs, and funding sources to provide services to our communities. TAM works in partnership with community-based arts, cultural, and service organizations using theatre and the works of Shakespeare to build community and enhance civic engagement.

Commitment to Community: From its inception, Theater at Monmouth has maintained strong community partnerships, education programs, and humanities initiatives. Through collaborations with such institutions as the University of Maine Augusta, the Maine Humanities Council, Arts Midwest, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Maine Arts Commission, The Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine, Cumston Hall Public Library, and schools across the state, the Theater provides educational, scholarly, and artistic experiences for Maine residents of all ages.

History: Founded in 1970, TAM is a year-round, professional repertory company, named the Shakespearean Theater of Maine by the State Legislature in 1975. Performances are held in Cumston Hall, listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings since 1976. Since its founding, TAM has produced expertly crafted, engaging productions in its three-month Summer Repertory Season and through Education Tours annually reaching more than 15,000 students.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

FROM THE PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Welcome to Theater at Monmouth’s “Season for Lovers.” I start the season both very excited and grateful to be kicking off our 44th year. You will see a lot of me this summer and I hope to have the opportunity to meet each and every one of you.

I am most grateful for you, our TAM patrons. Thank you for your applause, your laughter, your tears, your enthusiasm, and your love of theatre. My wish this year is that many more people experience the energy, excitement, creativity and good fellowship we all feel the minute we turn into the Cumston Hall parking lot. Please help me realize that wish by encouraging your family, friends, and neighbors to come and enjoy the fantastic work being done at the Theater at Monmouth.

I am also grateful for my fellow Board members; for their hard work, dedication, and resourcefulness. I have never served on a board with a finer group of people. Very special thanks to Linda Wilcox who served as our Board President

for the last five years. Linda remains a very active board member and for that, too, I am thankful as I have already sought her guidance and wisdom on several occasions.

I am grateful for our remarkable Producing Artistic Director Dawn McAndrews and the entire company. Unless you’ve been through it you can’t imagine the amount of preparation and hard work involved in staging a play, let alone five at the same time. I literally don’t know how they do it and I’m not certain they know either and yet they do, year after year, with professionalism, grace, and brilliance. Please reach out to a company member and let them know how much you appreciate their efforts.

Last but certainly not least, I am grateful for your unwavering financial support without which we would not exist. Less than half of our operating revenue comes from ticket sales. As a patron of the Theater of Monmouth, if you haven’t already, please consider making a donation to our annual fundraising campaign. Help us keep this amazing theatre amazing! Together we can make this the most wonderful summer of love!

Individual commitment to a group effort—that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.

–Vince Lombardi

Welcome to Season 44 at Theater at Monmouth! There is so much to share about the talented group of artists that have come

together this summer and the quote above says it all. What we create here, to paraphrase Mr. Lombardi, is a “company” of like-minded individuals working towards the common goal of breathing new life into classic literature for the good of our community. And now that you, our audience, are here that company is complete.

As Producing Artistic Director, I am charged with guiding the company’s mission—to present innovative approaches to Shakespeare and other classic plays through professional productions that enrich the lives of people throughout the state of Maine. Because TAM is a community-based, professional, arts organization dedicated to promoting

quality arts and humanities experiences for the people of our region.

For 2013, we have assembled five classic plays that examine the many faces of love—from chivalry to lust, loyalty to betrayal, dominance to domestic tranquility. The ups and downs of love and marriage fill the plays of our 44th season. From Shakespeare’s epic battle of the sexes to Joan Didion’s autobiographical memoir of loss, these plays are filled with strong women confronting profound obstacles and, a little magic.

All this is possible thanks to the generosity of supporters who believe in our work. It is our united commitment to the importance of the arts; the collaborative effort to honor the past through story; and our shared hope to shape the future that makes this work possible. It is the work that brings us together as a society and, for this evening, as a company of individuals ready to delight in great works of the stage. I sincerely hope you enjoy it!

FROM THE DIRECTOR

THE KNIGHT OF THE BURNING PESTLE

The Knight of the Burning Pestle first appeared in quarto form in 1613. Twelve years later, two more editions were published and from their title pages we learn that it was “acted by her Majesties Servants at the Private House in Drury Lane.” With these barest of clues to the production history of Pestle, we decided to use the beautiful bones of Cumston Hall to perform the play as it might have been in 1635.

Pestle owes direct literary allegiance to Don Quixote. The spirit of Cervantes’ romance is seen in the grocer’s apprentice, Rafe, and follows him through his many adventures. What interested me most was the addition of the good-natured Citizen and his wife as comedic foils serving as intermediaries between the audience and the story being played out on stage. Not only do Citizen and Wife react TO the play, they help SHAPE it with lively, comic, and heartfelt asides and direct admonitions to the players.

In The Empty Space Peter Brook makes much of the idea that plays that are in any way dated cannot ignore the modern culture and context in which they are presented. So, while our goal will be to emulate a production that might have occurred in 1635, we also hope to present you with a relevant, rollicking good time that will leave you laughing on your way out the door. Is that too much of an Impossible Dream? Have fun!

FROM THE DIRECTOR

THE TAMING OF THE SHREW

What a terror and delight it is to explore Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Many people have such a strong visceral reaction to this story. “How could you produce something that is so politically incorrect, that treats women so badly?” But what if The Taming of the Shrew is a real love story, a love story between two misfits? Do these two broken deeply flawed human beings have what it takes to navigate their own booby trapped expertly constructed walls of defense to find love? Do they even deserve it? I call it a “real” love story because it is ugly, painful and fraught with mistakes and missteps. The journey to love (and peace) is violent and passionate. How many times in your own life have you said (or at least thought) “that you would do anything for love?” Shrew asks that question of us—in blunt and aggressive terms. Anything? Okay, would you fight for it? Give up ev-erything you’ve ever known for it? Or how about the hardest thing of all—do you have the confidence and the strength to surrender completely to it?

As Shakespeare so aptly puts it…“I see a woman may be made a fool, If she had not a spirit to resist.” I hope you join us for this wild and exciting ride.

OUR TOWN

Wilder’s New England roots come quite close to Monmouth: his father was born in Calais, his grandfather was a dentist and prosperous merchant in Augusta. But Wilder was also a voracious traveler and intellectual who spent formative years in China and wrote much of this play in Zurich. He sent early drafts of Our Town to Gertrude Stein for comments. Pirandello and Kabuki Theater influenced the play as much as time spent in the Belgrade Lakes and the MacDowell colony. The original title was M marries N, and what really interested Wilder was not a portrait of small-town life. It was setting everyday lives against the universal indifference of the stars. As a young man, Thornton observed an archeological dig in Italy and was struck by an ancient scene of Roman family life buried and forgotten in the dirt. That image of who might be looking at us a thousand years from now became a driving force for Our Town.

It’s a beautifully written play, the “Great American Play” according to Edward Albee. Each visit to Grover’s Corners reveals some new facet. You may have seen it before, or been in it in high school. But as Wilder said, “’I Love You’ and ‘I Suffer’” have been said many billions of times, and never twice the same.” So see it again, for this first time.

THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING

“Life changes fast. Life changes in the instant. You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends.”—Joan Didion, The Year of Magical Thinking

The Year of Magical Thinking depicts Didion’s changing relationship between the person she was and her solitary struggle with grief and self-pity. However the play is not a clinical record of one woman’s emotional devastation and unimaginable loss; ultimately it is a provocative, and often humorous, journey of self-reflection.

The “magical thinking” of title refers to the belief that if a person hopes for something hard enough or performs the appropriate actions with sufficient conviction then the outcome can be changed. Magical equals amazing in its most literal sense—the daily discovery of difference as microscopic particles recombine altering the flow of living and breathing. Forever.

When asked the difference between her memoir and the play, Didion said: “When I was writing the book, I did not know whether or not I would survive. When I was writing the play, I knew that I had.”  It is my hope that TAM’s production will awaken memories of loved ones, unite us to joy in the journey we all share, and help us to appreciate the simple beauty of life lived to the fullest.

Her narrative nonfiction has earned her the reputation of a highly esteemed chronicler of American culture and politics. In 2005, Didion wrote The Year of Magical Thinking, a National Book Award

winning memoir chronicling her struggle with the dual burdens of the death of her husband, writer John Gregory Dunne, and her daughter Quintana’s grave illness. In 2007, Didion’s adaptation of her novel first appeared on Broadway, directed by David Hare and featuring Vanessa Redgrave.

THE VELVETEEN RABBIT

The Velveteen Rabbit is a timeless story about the magic of childhood and its ability to transcend reality with pure and uninhibited love. Margery Williams wrote her classic tale in 1922 when a stuffed rabbit was all a child needed to spark their imagination. As the original story, and this world premier adaptation, is both beautiful and simple it is my job as director to tell the story beautifully and simply. Our production is told through the eyes of children as they play dress up in the 1920s to reenact the tale of a little boy who loved a rabbit so much that she became real. It is my sincere hope that you and your family enjoy the piece and find the beauty, love, and simplicity in our production of The Velveteen Rabbit.

William Shakespeare(Playwright, 44th Season)No man’s life has been the subject of more speculation than Shakespeare’s. For all his fame and celebrity, Shakespeare’s personal history remains a mystery. We know a man named William Shakespeare was baptized at Stratford upon Avon on April 26, 1564, and was buried at Holy Trinity Church in Stratford on April 25, 1616.

Tradition holds that he was born three days earlier and that he died on his birthday, April 23, but this is perhaps more myth than fact. Regardless, it is clear that by 1594, Shakespeare was a shareholder, actor, and principle playwright in the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, one of the most popular companies in London, and remained so until the end of his career in 1611. In the years since Shakespeare’s death, he has risen from obscurity to the most read, adapted, and translated writer of all time.

| 39SEASON 44

2014 SEASONIn celebration of Shakespeare’s 450th and TAM’s 45th, we’ve taken our designation as the Shakespearean theatre of Maine to heart presenting a line-up of plays from England’s greatest playwrights. The British are coming to Monmouth in 2014—come join us!

As You Like It | by William Shakespeare The more pity that fools may not speak wisely what wise men do foolishly—Touchstone, As You Like ItWhen Rosalind and Orlando are banished from the court by the usurping duke, they flee for their lives into the wild. Stepping into the magical Forest of Arden with the philosophical fool Touchstone and her cousin Celia, Rosalind disguises herself as a young man. Orlando, and his long-time servant Adam, fall in with the banished duke’s band of brothers. It isn’t long before the lovers find each other and act out a bizarre ritual courtship that ends, as all good comedies do, with everyone paired up two-by-two.

A Woman of No Importance | by Oscar WildeOne should never trust a woman who tells one her real age. A woman who would tell one that, would tell one anything.—Lord Illingworth, A Woman of No ImportanceA group of high society lords and ladies gather for a weekend of brilliant banter at Lady Hunstaton’s idyllic English country estate. Lord Illingworth, a dashing womanizer set to become an ambassador, hires the young George Arbuthnot as his secretary. In this dark comedy of serial seducers, moralizing monogamists, secret pasts, and simmering heartbreak, which Arbuthnot choose—social advancement or loyalty of the heart? Surely the basis for Downton Abbey, Wilde's deliciously witty satire lays bare the moral contradictions of Victorian England.

Romeo & Juliet | by William Shakespeare The course of true love never did run smooth—Lysander, A Midsummer Night’s DreamWhen you are passionately, purely in love, nothing else matters—not family, not friends, not self. Shakespeare’s impetuous tragedy of young lovers swept into a whirlwind of misunderstandings, secrets, and fate—begins and ends with the hope that love conquers all. Romeo and Juliet, the children of two landed families locked in an age-old feud, are irresistibly drawn to each other. Defying hatred and distrust, they dare to believe they can, and must, be together.

What the Butler Saw | by Joe Orton I’m not mad. It only looks that way—Dr. Prentice, What the Butler Saw by Joe OrtonIt’s your typical boy-meets-girl story. Only the boy is a wily psychoanalyst married to a nymphomaniac. And the girl is his secretary…once she passes a not-so-routine physical. Mix in a little blackmail, a lot of sexual innuendo, a government inspector, a lusty bellboy and you’ve got all the ingredients for a classic farce! Decried as scandalous in 1969, What the Butler Saw is a timeless tale of sexual repression in a culture gone mad, never slowing down long enough to let you catch your breath from laughter.

Tales from the Blue Fairy Book | edited by Andrew LangThe first volume in Lang's fairy tale series gathers some of the finest children’s stories from around the world, including Sleeping Beauty, Rumpelstiltskin, Cinderella, The Arabian Nights, Beauty and the Beast, Hansel and Gretel, Jack the Giantkiller, and Puss in Boots. TAM’s 2014 Family show will feature a collection of classic tales as compiled by British scholar and poet, Andrew Lang.

The Sorcerer | music by Arthur Sullivan | libretto by W.S. Sullivan He can rack your brains with chains, And gibberings grim and ghastly!—John Wellington, The SorcererWhat happens when a magically brewed cup o‘tea intoxicates unsuspecting residents of an entire community? Based on An Elixir of Love, a Christmas story written by Gilbert in 1876, The Sorcerer relates the tale of Alexis, a young man obsessed with the idea of love leveling all social distinctions. He engages J. W. Wells & Co., Family Sorcerers, to concoct a love potion that causes everyone in the village to fall in love with the first person they see regardless of age, rank or fortune. Can such magical mayhem be untangled? The results are both comic and heartbreaking; in the end J. W. Wells must sacrifice all to break the spell.

CUMSTON HALL

For the past several years, the Monmouth community, Cumston Hall Trustees, The Friends of Cumston Hall, the Monmouth Board of Selectmen, representatives of the library and many user groups have worked cooperatively on a $2.9 million revitalization and addition. Supporters, donors, and other organizations combined to finish the last pieces of the opera hall restoration project that began in 2000.

The remarkable investment project is a testament to the vision of Dr. Cumston and Mr. Cochrane and their ability to create a facility that is both practical and unique more than 100 years later.

For an expanded history of this exceptional building, visit theateratmonmouth.org

This beautiful edifice dominates the main street of the town and has aroused the interest and awe of passersby since its dedication in 1900. It is names for Dr. Charles Cumston, who for many years was the headmaster of Boston Latin High School. Having retired to Monmouth, Dr. Cumston decided to give his town a community building which would house the town offices, a caucus hall, a public library, and an auditorium. He entrusted the job of designing the building to Harry Cochrane, a Maine native with a reputation for fine interior work.
