Greetings, Thank you for your support and attending Legends of...2013 as we celebrate our tenth year of success. We appreciate your continued patronage and support in helping us to accomplish the Foundation's mission. Your financial contributions and pledges have allowed us to grow the Young Entrepreneurs Conference and Gordon's Garden. The greater Columbia community, and the city of Charlotte, North Carolina have embraced both programs and have helped the Foundation to promote their success. We thank you for recognizing that Legends is more than a concert; it is an experience which enriches the community and teaches our children about lost genres of music and art. We must continue to embrace and challenge our children. They are our future, and their success rests on our shoulders. The Auntie Karen Foundation's mission is to empower, enlighten and educate through the arts. Karen Alexander and the Foundation have engaged the children of this community and throughout the world to tap their creative talents, encouraged to grasp every opportunity offered, and to excel beyond the confines of their immediate environments. With your continued support we can do greater things, create other challenging programs, and Olivia can give many hugs around America. Sincerely, Sarah Watson, Executive Director

Background/SummaryThe Auntie Karen Foundation welcomes you to our tenth annual Legends Of...Concert Series. In 2004, our inaugural event featured Roberta Flack in concert with special guest, The Capi-tal City Chorale. In 2005, we presented Jazz Legend, Dianne Reeves with special guest, The Auntie Karen All Stars, South Carolina’s Finest Musical Talent. Patrons are still raving about Al Jarreau (2006) and Patti Austin (2007). In 2008, we welcomed The Joe Sample Trio and Take 6. While in 2009, we showcased funk Legend, George Duke and jazz vocalist, Rachelle Ferrell. 2010 brought us the singer/songwriter duo, Ashford & Simpson, while in 2011 we showcased 10 time Grammy Award winner, singer, songwriter, producer, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. 2012 we welcomed two Grammy Award winning Legends: Ramsey Lewis, pianist and the return of vocalist, Patti Austin. Tonight we welcome 7 Time Grammy Award Winner, Gladys Knight to a sold out Koger Center.

The Auntie Karen Foundation created the Legends of...Concert Series to pay tribute to the contributions African American music has made to history. Each year during Black Histo-ry Month, the series profiles a jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel or blues artist who has made a lasting contribution to the history of music. The series places a special emphasis on Jazz Legends. In addition, we have extended our series to include “Legends of...In the Schools”. “Legends of...In the Schools” is a series of art events designed to salute African American Heritage. Events include: Folk Art, Quilting, Dance, Spoken Word, Written Word and Music. Through a partnership with The Columbia Museum of Art, on the last Saturday in January 2013, we will feature some of the best local and regional artists at no cost to the public.

Annual Young Entrepreneur’s Conference For the tenth year, this innovative conference held on the campus of Benedict College has brought together youth (ages seven to twenty two) from across the region to foster economic empowerment. Each year, ten young entrepreneurs under the age of twenty five are featured. Auntie Karen’ s Place TV Pilot: Auntie Karen’s PlaceThe Auntie Karen Foundation partnered with SC ETV and Palmetto Health Children’sHospital to produce a 30-minute DVD that uses puppets and music to provide a simple way to explain life skills such as: health, emergency preparedness, jazz music and financial literary. The Foundation received a grant from the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Columbia and SC Competitive Grants program.

Artpreneur/Technopreneur Classes The purpose of the Artpreneur/Technopreneur classes is to “inspire a new generation of business leaders through arts and technology”. Classes include: visual art, dance, creative cooking, guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, spoken word and etiquette. The Auntie Karen Foun-dation’s Artpreneur pilot program started in 2003.

Hugs From CarolinaThe Auntie Karen Foundation partnered with Auntie Karen Inc. and City Light Inc. to cre-ate Hugs From Carolina. Hugs From Carolina, a division of Hugs Around The World, has Olivia The Octopus spreading hugs to the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. The program was launched in Biloxi, Mississippi on October 14, 2005. Children were given an adoption kit which included: an Olivia The Octopus Hand puppet and the book “Olivia Gave A Hug Today”. Once again, Olivia and City Light Inc. joined forces with a Hugs Campaign in Saluda, SC.

Legends of...(A Salute to Black History)The Auntie Karen Foundation pays tribute to the contributions of African Americans with the Legends of...Programs. Each year, the celebration includes: Black History Program with The Columbia Museum of Art, The Legends of...Master Class with CSAM (Center for Southern Af-rican American Music at USC) and The Legends of...Concert & Silent Auction (Koger Center)

Gordon’s GardenThe Gordon’s Garden Program was created to teach kids about healthy living habits. Gordon, an original Auntie Karen character, is an overweight, purple Jamaican Yam. The Jamaican Yams are used to teach healthy living skills to youth via music, books and DVDs. The fear that Gordon’s weight and eating habits are putting him at risk for developing diabetes was the inspiration for the garden.

Auntie Karen’s character Olivia The Octopus is an International Jazz Diva. The Hugs Around The World campaign was created to have Olivia travel the world giving hugs. To date Olivia has traveled to Brazil, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Japan, Holland, Ghana and Nigeria.

The great ones endure, and Gladys Knight has long greatest. Very few singers over the last fifty years have artistry. This eight-time Grammy winner has enjoyed #1Adult Contemporary, and has triumphed in film, performance.

Knight, known as the “Empress of Soul,” a longtime Las Vegas resident, returned to the Strip this past year to the famed Tropicana Hotel for a special engagement that ran in the newly named Gladys Knight Theater, making her the first African- American performer to have a venue named after her in Las Vegas. Last fall she was honored with the “Legend Award” at the 2011 Soul Train Awards. This spring Knight will release her newest album featuring the hit “I Who Have Nothing.”

2012 has brought her a new challenge, that of dancer. Gladys has joined the cast of this season’s “Dancing with the Stars,” partnering with Tristan McManus. “Dancing with the Stars” premiered Monday, March 19th at 8:00pm on ABC. Last fall saw Knight both honoring and being honored, first at a Michael Jackson tribute concert, and then at the 2011 Soul Train Awards. At the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, Knight joined such performers as Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, and Smokey Robinson in a tribute to the legendary King of Pop in a concert event called “Michael Forever.” Following that, Knight was honored with a “Legend Award” alongside fellow recipients Earth, Wind & Fire on the BET broadcast of the 3rd annual Soul Train Awards, hosted by Cedric the Entertainer.

The seven time Grammy Award, Georgia-born, Knight began performing gospel music at age four in the Mount Mariah Baptist Church and sang as a guest soloist with the Morris Brown College Choir. Three years later, she won the grand prize on television’s “Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour,” and the following year, she, along with her brother Bubba, her sister Brenda and her cousins William and Elenor Guest, formed The Pips. In 1959, Brenda and Elenor left the group, replaced by cousin Edward Patten and friend Langston George. The group was renamed Gladys Knight & The Pips, and following George’s departure in 1962, the classic line-up was in place.

The group debuted their first album in 1960, when Knight was just sixteen. With Knight singing lead and The Pips providing lush harmonies and graceful choreography, the group went on to achieve icon status, having recorded some of the most memorable songs of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Top 20 hits, like “Every Beat of My Heart,” “Letter Full of Tears,” “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” and “If I Were Your Woman,” set the stage for an amazing run in the mid-1970s, with Top 10 gold-certified singles like “Neither One of Us (Wants to be the First to Say Goodbye),” “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination,” “Best Thing to Ever Happen to Me” and the #1 smash “Midnight Train to Georgia” established Gladys Knight and The Pips as the premiere pop/R&B vocal ensemble in the world. The party kept rolling with hits like “On and On” from the Academy Award nominated soundtrack of Curtis Mayfield’s “Claudine,” the 1974 comedy about love in the inner city. Knight enjoyed another #1 hit in 1985 when she teamed with Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Dionne Warwick on “That’s What Friends are For.”All told, Knight has recorded more than 38 albums over the years, including four solo albums during the past decade: “Good Woman” (1991); “Just for You” (1994); the inspirational “Many Different Roads” (1999); and “At Last” (2001). “At Last” showed the world that she still has what it takes to record a hit album, employing the talents of contemporary producers like Randy Jackson, Gary Brown and James D.C. Wil-liams III, Jon John, Jamey Jaz, Keith Thomas, Tom Dowd and Tiger Roberts.

In 1995, Knight earned her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the next year, Gladys Knight & The Pips were inducted into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame. Knight published an autobiography, “Between Each Line of Pain and Glory” (a line taken from her million selling recording “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me”), in 1997, and the next year, she and The Pips were presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. Today, Knight helps oversee her busy career from the Las Vegas headquarters of Shakeji, Inc., her personal entertainment corporation. She is a mother, great-grandmother, performer and a businesswoman with a spiritual outlook on her life.

Her faith in God has been the driving force behind all of Knight’s endeavors, guiding her through her many successes.

Byron Counts, VocalistReflect on a pure and simple sound, but yet the mere presence of his voice and the whisper of his melodica is enough to tantalize emotions deep within the soul of the listener. Byron’s sound is a mixture of jazz, soul, pop, rhythm and blues flavors that combine together to have a starving audience begging for more. Born and raised in South Carolina, Byron began his long musical tract as a church musician. After growing impatient waiting for local singers to demo his ideas, Byron began exploring his vocal prowess ness. Influenced by artist such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Sarah Vaughn, and Quincy Jones his quest for musical knowledge led him to numerous summer trips to New York. It was there he would hook up with producer/song writer John Barber, known for his work with Mariah Carey and Taylor Dane. It was at this juncture that Byron developed as a vocalist and began performing at The Apollo Theatre and embarked on a production deal at Cove City Studio, known for their work with Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. It was also at this time that Byron hooked up with singing diva CeCe Peniston and platinum producer Devante Swing of “Jodeci” to chart “I See Love” which

is on her platinum selling cd “Finally”. Byron returned to South Carolina and joined with local jazz artist Karen Alexander (AuntieKaren.org) to form the internationally acclaimed jazz band Straight Ahead. It was the straight ahead years that he explored the creativity of jazz vocals and song writing and also produced the bands international cd “Into The Light”. Byron went on to start “Sounds Of The City” records and in 2009 released his first solo cd entitled “What-Evah” Soon afterwards he followed with his holiday project “It’s Christmas”. He is currently working on his third project smooth jazz project “Songs In The Key Of Love”.

Sam “Bassman” JenkinsA native of South Carolina, Samuel Jenkins a jazz bass guitarist graduated from Benedict College in Columbia, S.C. where he majored in Criminal Justice with a minor in Music. He contributed many years of performing with the renowned “Benedict Gospel Choir”, and attended and performed in many recitals 1986-1989, at the USC School of Music as well as with the S.C. Philharmonic Orchestra”, while completing his education. “Bassman” Sam tours both nationally and internationally as his audiences pull on his demand as an outstanding bass quitarist and jazz artist. . “Bassman” Sam has worked with other various artists including headliners with Ashford & Simpson.

Tre’ Tailor, Vocalist Tre’s familiar-feeling, poignant and humorous speaking style has made her a much sought after speaker and mc and she’s appeared at functions for several schools, churches and civic organizations. Tre’ continues to do Commercial Voice Over Work, guest TV appearances on stations including WACH Fox 57, CNN plus she handles PR and Marketing Assignments for local businesses and organizations, including the Black Expo, The Auntie Karen Foundation and Employment Security Commission where she successfully implemented a Publicity Campaign to inform job seekers and business about the various free services, programs and classes available. Currently Tre’ is utilizing her communication skills with her new venture Relax…its ok 2b Single! The audio blog, face book page and (upcoming) Radio and TV venture will help bridge the gap between men and women in an effort to connect them in the relationships they seek! “Everyone has been single,” Tre’ says and the onset of thousands of dating sites proves how many people don’t want to be, and despite technology, people are still not connecting! Tre’ has launched: Relax…it’s ok 2b Single as an effort to assist singles of all ages, gender, races and religions Heal/Communicate / Connect. All this in one down to earth sista! Tre’ is humble in responding, “I give God all the Glory; and I’m looking forward

to what lies ahead, because as Oprah says “He can truly dream a bigger dream for you than we could ever dream for ourselves”! And Tre’ adds, we have to share the blessings those dreams produce with all who cross our path!

Patti Harris, VocalistPatti has what some would call a “Signature” sound, as well as her own unique style as a vocalist. Patti has been known to take her sound from a mid-range smooth and sultry, all the way up to a high and sweet soprano; all within just a few bars of music. Patti was born and raised in Miami, Florida and at an early age, she discovered her love of music. At first, it was simply Patti and her microphone, or should we say, Patti and her hairbrush in the mirror. Indeed, Patti’s early “Claim to Fame” was as a local singer and actress, having once appeared on the Jackie Gleason show. Patti has several acting and commercial credits to her name, but she has always known that singing was her true calling. Soon after moving to Columbia, South Carolina, she became a member of Columbia’s own “Midnight Blue” Band and Show and she was further blessed to become a member of one of Columbia’s all-time favorite Gospel groups, the “#1 Singing Angels”. Patti is also very proud to have been a member of the well-known jazz band, “Straight Ahead”. Patti says, “I am both a student and a fan of a variety of musical styles. I have been influenced perhaps most of all by people like Phyllis Hyman, Stevie Wonder and Denise Williams. I also must mention Ms. Rachelle Ferrell, she is the person who most changed my entire thought process on the possibilities of the human voice.” Patti’s attributes her so called “sweet” tone to something that comes from deep down

inside. Patti gives gratitude daily to the almighty God who has allowed her the gift of song, as well as the blessings of a wonderful family and many good friends.

Fred Burrell, DrummerFred Burrell is a native of Columbia, South Carolina. He has been playing drums for 21 years. Influences on Fred’s style include John Blackwell, Jeremy Haynes, Chris Dave, Tony Williams, Brian Frazier Moore, Lil’ John Roberts, Joel Smith, just to name a few.

Herschel Clark, SaxophoneHerschel was born in Kansas City, Missouri. By the time he was 12, he could be seen playing with local bands in Kansas City. His hometown band, the “Friends of Darkness” performed constantly throughout the Midwest during the 70s, and had the pleasure of “gigging” on a luxury Caribbean cruise ship during his senior year in high school. As a student at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida, Herschel toured with the Jazz lab band for two years; playing with renowned trumpeter Nat Adderly. He performed in programs that included ap-pearances by Ramsey Lewis and Pat Metheny. After graduating with honors in 1981, he took

up residence in Atlanta, Georgia, where he has remained. Working full time in the computer sales field keeps him on the road; but he still finds time to enjoy his favorite pastime, playing music. Whether he’s playing traditional jazz in a smoke-filled room, or R&B dance tunes to a jamming floor crowd, one can see by his energy that music is his passion.

Building robots, observing surgical procedures, repairing diesel engines and flying simulated space missions are just some of the unique educational experiences that our students can take advantage of in Richland One. We recognize that students learn in different ways and have different interests. We also understand that parents want choices when it comes to the education of their children. We offer Montessori programs, foreign language instruction, International Baccalaureate and other advanced academic programs, visual and performing arts, and career and technology education programs.

Our students represent the next generation of teachers, scientists, artists, entrepreneurs and leaders. Year after year, our graduates go on to attend some of the nation’s most prestigious colleges and universities. The Richland One Class of 2012 earned more than $55.3 million in scholarships and other financial assistance, setting a new district record.
