Update FFA 2013 Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve May 2013 AGSTRAVAGANZA! Spreading Agricultural Education By Sasha Glover It’s Our Time It’s our time! It’s our time to reflect upon our community support. Without this foundation and the support of our community we wouldn’t be number one in the state. We are only as strong as our support groups allow us to be. We strive everyday to be- come better and to excel in what we do best. How did we get from the third in the state to be number one? It took hard work, long nights, and early mornings to create such a successful chapter. Building a legacy has also brought us to be number one. In order to keep up our chapter’s great work we must have strong underclassmen who are willing to step up and help. It’s our time to help others in our community while helping our- selves. As we continue through out the summer, we hope to better ourselves and our community. “Build a Legacy, Uphold Tradition” FFA By the Numbers 82 7500 144 5 Members that attended contests 867 Total Members in FFA Items of Food Donated Attendees at FFA Banquet Grant Money Received Outstanding Juniors Plants in the Greenhouse 20000 Scholarship Money Awarded 4000 Financial Footprint in Webberville area 17 Academic Excellence 12223 201 1 14 Regional Officer State Degrees The smell of fresh flowers, the sight of FFA banners flapping in the wind, the roar of tractors arriving, and the sight of 300 elemen- tary kids visiting the FFA agricultural facilities are just a few of the things you will experience at the Webberville FFA’s AGstravaganza. The Webberville FFA held their annual AGstravaganza on May second. Once again it was a magical experience for all members, guests, and students that attended. This event is a part of the chap- ter’s Food for America program and also acts as a member recruit- ment activity. The purpose of the Food for America program is to teach students where their food, fiber, and fuel comes from. “It’s always a pleasure to host the school community as well as the greater Webberville community to the ag facilities. The FFA members really rose to the occasion and did an outstanding job educating others,” said advisor Colleen Scott-Keiser. The chapter puts a unique twist on AGstravaganza by adding new stations each year. This year the rabbit and wind turbine stations were added. At the wind turbine station kids were able to make their own wind turbine. Members’ achievements are also displayed at AGstravaganza to guarantee that all members are recognized for their successes. “AGstravaganza was a huge success once again. It is great to see all the kids learning new facts about agriculture while having fun. This is a great event to wrap up the year, showcasing all the mem- bers’ knowledge and achievements,” said chapter president, Emily House. This was the 5th year the Webberville FFA hosted AGstravaganza. The event continues to educate students across the district and showcases the chapter’s and students’ achievements. This event has now been recognized at the state and national level. 1. HAYRIDE: Elementary students smile big as they leave AGstrava- ganza on the hayride 2. They are now ranked number one among the 95 active FFA chapters that make up the state association. The chap- ter was awarded this because of their innovative ways and quality plan of activi- ties. “It was interesting to watch these FFA members show how their chapter has involved students that are not your typical FFA members. It is great to see ac- complishments these students have strived for and the goals they have for the future of the Webberville community. The members have put a lot of time and ef- fort to make the chapter the way it is today,” said Webberville FFA Alumni Presi- dent, David Wheeler. “It is great to see how their involvement is carrying over to the strength of their chapter. Good luck to the Webberville FFA Chapter in their future endeavors.” In order to receive this award the chapter had to complete a lot of hard work. An 18 page application was filled out and turned into the state in January. The state association then reviewed all the applications from across the state and selects the top three. The Webberville FFA was among this top 3 for the second year straight. “It is very gratifying to see the student’s hard work pay off,” said FFA Advisor Colleen Scott Keiser. “It is a highly competitive field, when you compete against such esteemed FFA Programs like Byron and Corunna. We are honored, as a chapter, to be considered and humbled by being named the state winner.” The top three in the state then present their application in any way that they choose. The basic frame of the presentation is 10 minutes to present and 10 min- utes of oral questioning with two member presenters. This year Sasha Glover and Emily House were selected to present the award to three judges. “It was a great honor being able to present this on behalf of the chapter. It was a lot of work but it definitely paid off,” said Sasha Glover. The scoring for the national chapter award is based on the application and presentation. The Webberville Chapter scored the best in these areas, receiving the awards and $100 cash prize. The application will now be sent to the na- tional level for further review. The chapter will be recognized at the FFA National Convention next fall to walk across the national stage where they will receive a plaque for this prestigious accomplishment.
