2013-14 Workshop Sessions

PD01-1314 The Great American Song Book Date: October 9, 2013 Time: 4:30-6:30 Location: Brentwood High School, Room 1622 Presented by: Richie Iacona and Madeline Kole Description: All are invited! The NYSCAME Professional Development series proudly opens with the beautiful sounds of the American Song Book (Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Richard Rogers, George Gershwin, Bert Bachrach, etc.). The dynamic Iacona/Kole musical team will perform and share stories related to the music, lyrics and composers with implications for current music education trends and performance. Bio: Richie Iacona (pianist/composer) and Madeline Kole (bassist/vocalist) are well-known professional musicians who regularly perform the music of great American composers in a variety of venues throughout the region and country. They have performed with many of the most famous musicians in the industry and have recorded both together and with other jazz and pop artists.

PD02-1314 String and Orchestral Education: Successful Innovative and Unique Pedagogical Practices and Strategies Date: October 16, 2013 – Revised Date. Time: 4:30-6:30 Location: Patchogue High School, Orchestra Room Presented by: Ken Schwartzman Description: Among the topics to be addressed in a collaborative, sharing format will be: -Use of the NYSSMA Major Organization Format and Evaluation Sheets in establishing effective Peer Assessment -Institution of Inter Age/Common Ability Orchestras -The Interactive Approach - The Fayetteville-Manlius Project, the new Kjos instrumental series -Music Learning Theory, and its application to instrumental music Bio: Ken Schwartzman has had a 44 year career in Music Education as a String Teacher, Director of Music and College Professor. He served as President of SCMEA and Suffolk-NYSCAME as well as NYSSMA State Orchestra Chairperson. For the past 20 years, Mr. Schwartzman has been a member of the NYSSMA Adjudication Committee, where he has trained Solo, All State, and Major Organization Adjudicators. He is currently on the faculty of LIU Post, where he supervises student teachers and teaches string methods.

PD04-1314 TGIM "Thank God It's Monday". (So I can go teach and make MUSIC with children!!) Date: October 30, 2013 Time: 4:30-6:30 Location: Babylon High School Presented by: Ronald A. Sutherland Description: Two in One! The workshop will include both motivation for teaching music in these challenging times and a conducting refresher seminar led by the dynamic, iconic educator Ron Sutherland. Bio: Mr. Sutherland retired from the Clarence (NY) Central School District in 1996 after a long distinguished career teaching instrumental music and conducting the award-winning Clarence High School Wind Ensemble. Ron remains active as a conductor, clinician and guest speaker and has led many student leadership workshops throughout New York State. He travels to Europe each summer with a select Band and Chorus under the auspices of American Music Abroad.

PD05-1314 Assessment in Music Education: Report from the 4th International Symposium in Taipei, Taiwan Date: November 19, 2013 Time: 4:30-6:30 Location: Northport High School, Room A-144 Presented by: Dr. Izzet Mergen Description: There is a need for new and effective management systems for APPR. Dr. Mergen will examine ways to incorporate 21st century tools for the current educational challenges we face, including efficient storage of student work(s) and artifact(s). A discussion/Q&A session will conclude the presentation to determine emerging themes, patterns, and discrepancies related to high-stakes testing and teacher evaluation. Bio: Dr. Izzet Mergen has worked as a professional musician and music teacher for nearly 20 years in New York. His extensive lists of recording/performing credits include work with Whitney Houston and Wyclef Jean of the Fugees. Izzet currently works in the Northport-East Northport School District as the district-wide Director of Music Education.

PD06-1314 Training the Adolescent Voice Date: November 25, 2013 Time: 4:30-6:30 Location: Northport Middle School, chorus room Presented by: Dana Warren & Marie Michalopoulos Description: Discover effective instructional techniques for teaching middle school adolescent voices in your chorus or general music classroom. Mr. Warren and Ms. Michalopoulos will share some of their tried and true methods that will also work effectively with changing voices on the elementary and high school levels. Topics will include rehearsal techniques, literature and methods that will make concerts, festivals and classroom rehearsals effective, educational and meaningful for students. Bio: Dana Warren and Marie Michalopoulos are seasoned, veteran music teachers/choral conductors in the Northport-East Northport Public Schools with a wealth of experience as educators, performers, accompanists and guest conductors. They have led All-County ensembles and lectured in school districts in the area of middle school vocal technique and methods. PD06-1314 Lower Brass: Recruitment, Retention & Instruction - Go for the Gold Rating & Gold with Distinction rating Date: January 7, 2014 Time: 4:30-6:30 Location: Bellport High School Presented by: Bernie Jones Description: Improve the balance and blend of your Band, Orchestra, Jazz Band, Marching Band, etc. from the bottom up. This session is design to provide the tools needed to build up you low brass section in all of your ensembles. The agenda will include how to recruit students on all levels, switching of students, how to sustain enrollment and proven instructional techniques and instructional materials. Bio: Bernie Jones recently retired as Director of Music, Art and Dance from the West Islip Schools after a distinguished career as a teacher and administrator. He is a professional trombonist and experienced clinician. Mr. Jones has served in a variety of leadership positions including the presidency of the SCMEA and NYSCAME-Suffolk. He is the former Director of the NYSCAME Professional Development Series and is the Editor of the SCMEA Newsletter. PD07-13-14 Introduction to the Alexander Technique: A Method to Improve Singing and Instrumental Performance Date: January 8, 2014 Time: 4:30-6:30 Location: Bayport High School Presented by: Tom Vasillades Description: One of the factors of poor vocal or instrumental performance and/or chronic pain is a lack of awareness of harmful patterns and habits with an inability to do anything about them. The Alexander Technique increases

performance awareness, prevents these ineffective patterns and transforms them into improved and enhanced performance. The internationally known method has assisted performers improve and function more effectively in all of life’s activities. Participants are encouraged (but not required) to play their instrument or sing during the practical demonstration period. Bio: Tom Vasiliades trained at the American Center for the Alexander Technique and is a member of the American Society for the Alexander Technique. He founded the Alexander Technique Center for Performance and Development in NYC where he is a senior faculty member. Tom has taught at The Julliard School, The New School for Drama and at New York University. He also coaches students and professional actors for Broadway, Off-Broadway, television and film performance. PD08-1314 Piano Maintenance and Repair Date: February 10, 2014 Time: 4:30-6:30 Location: West Islip High School Presented by: Gerard Gravina Description: This is a workshop on care and maintenance of school pianos. Discussion will be driven by participants and will include topics such as strategies for routine piano maintenance, developing a long-term piano maintenance program, how to communicate with your piano technician, the use of electronic keyboards, and how to turn your acoustic piano into a digital instrument with record and midi capabilities. Bio: Jerry Gravina is a Piano Technicians Guild Registered Piano Technician with 30 years experience. His company, Piano Masters LLC, provides piano tuning, repair and rebuilding services to many school districts, theaters, professional musicians and private piano owners from Manhattan to Montauk. He is a guest presenter at Guild events and has taught extended in-service piano maintenance classes for SCMEA. PD09-1314 iPad and iPhone for Music Educators Date: February 27, 2014 Time: 4:30-6:30 Location: Bay Shore High School Presented by: Terry Nigrelli Description: Participants will discover useful apps and hardware for music teachers and administrators. Topics will include audio recording, tuners, notation apps, metronomes, assessments, Smartmusic, teacher evaluations, streaming music, wireless audio/video and cloud storage. Bio: Terry Nigrelli is the Director of Cultural Arts for Bay Shore Schools, a musician and an Apple Distinguished Educator. A past president of both SCMEA and NYSCAME Suffolk, Mr. Nigrelli serves as the NYSSMA Webmaster and is regularly in demand as a guest speaker and clinician in the areas of music and technology.
