The Murray Athletic Center, better known as the Domes, has been the home of Elmira College Women’s Ice Hockey for the past 12 years. Erected in 1973, the Murray Athletic Center has hosted every home Soaring Eagles ice hockey game for the past 40 years.

In the summer of 2001 a major renovation project took place that included new locker rooms and new offices for the hockey program, four new multi-purpose locker rooms and a new sports medicine area. These enhancements to the facil-ity provide the Soaring Eagles with a state-of-the-art locker room which includes individual maple player stalls, a stick room with work bench area, stereo and entertainment cen-ter, video editing equipment, coaches offices and meeting area, intercom system, and dehumidification system.

The Murray Athletic Center has been one of the premiere Division III hockey facilities in the country and these im-provements demonstrate the College’s commitment to pro-vide the student-athletes with the necessary facilities to sup-port the athletics programs at the College.

The Soaring Eagles continue to have one of the highest home attendance averages in the country with frequent sell-out crowds. A truly unique facility that the Soaring Eagles are happy to call home, and a place where few opponents enjoy much success.

Dean Jackson ’03 enters his second year as the Head Women’s Ice Hockey Coach and his seventh season as the Head Men’s Golf Coach.

In his first year at the helm of the women’s ice hockey program, Coach Jackson led the Soaring Eagles to their third NCAA title in program history. The 2012-13 team finished the season with a 24-5-1 overall record; Elmira’s 24 victories are tied for second most in program history. Elmira also finished the season as the No. 1 ranked team in the US-CHO.com poll for the first time in eight years. For his efforts Jackson was named the D3HOCKEY.COM National Coach of the Year, CaptainU National Coach of the Year, and was a finalist for the American Hockey Coaches Association (ACHA) Division III Coach of the Year award.

In 2012-13, Jackson coached Lauren Sullivan ’13, the nation’s leader in Goals Against Average (GAA) and shutouts. His team ranked first in the nation in scoring defense, second in penalty kill, and fourth in scoring offense. Maybe more impressive is the fact that Jackson became the first NCAA women’s ice hockey coach, in any division, to lead a team to a national championship without a single All-American selection.

Prior to his appointment as the Head Women’s Ice Hockey Coach, Jackson served as the Assistant Men’s Ice Hockey Coach at Elmira College from 2007-12, guiding the Soaring Eagles to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the NCAA Frozen Four in 2008. He also led Elmira to five ECAC West regular season championships and the 2010-11 ECAC West Conference Championship. During his time with the men’s team, Jackson coached eight AHCA All-Americans, two ECAC West Players of the Year, two ECAC West Defensive Players of the Year, three ECAC West Goalies of the Year, four ECAC West Rookies of the Year, and 20 ECAC West All-Conference selections.

Jackson is no stranger to Elmira College as he returns to his alma mater where he enjoyed one of the most successful playing careers in the 40 year history of the Elmira College Men’s Ice Hockey program. While playing for the Soaring Eagles from 1999 – 2003, Jackson be-came a member of the prestigious 100 point club in 2003, garnered ECAC West Rookie of the Year honors in 1999, was named to the ECAC West All-Conference Second Team in 2003, and was named the ECAC West Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player in 2003. Additionally, Jackson captained the 2003 edition of the Purple and Gold, en route to being named the Elmira College Men’s Ice Hockey Booster Club Player of the Year.

In addition to competing as a standout forward with the Men’s Hockey program, Jackson was also a four-year member of the Soaring Eagles Men’s Golf team.

Following a distinguished playing career for the Soaring Eagles, Jack-son went on to play professionally. During his professional career, he

During both his collegiate and professional career, Jackson has also served as a head instructor and program coor-dinator for World Class Hockey Development Canada. During his time with World Class Hockey Development Canada, Jackson also served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Josh Piro ’03 joins the Elmira College coaching staff for his first season as the Assistant Wom-en’s Ice Hockey Coach and Head Women’s JV Ice Hockey Coach.

Piro, a 2003 graduate of Elmira College, was a four-year member of the Men’s Varsity Ice Hockey team. During his time playing for the Soaring Eagles, Piro helped lead Elmira College to the ECAC West Confer-ence Crown in 2003 and an NCAA Tournament quar-terfinal appearance that same year. He was also awarded the Coach’s Award in 2003 for best exemplifying dedica-tion, hard work, and superior play.

Following commencement, Piro went on to play profes-sionally for a total of nine seasons. He started his career

with the East Coast Hockey League’s (ECHL) Johnstown Chiefs and finished his rookie season with the Florence Pride (ECHL) playing in 56 games. He played one season with the United Hockey League’s (UHL) Fort Wayne Komets, and then re-turned to Elmira to play for the UHL’s Elmira Jackals for the 2005-2006 season. Following his season in Elmira, Piro signed with the Fayetteville FireAntz in Fayette-ville, NC. He was named Assistant Captain of the FireAntz and led his team to the Southern Professional Hockey League Championship (SPHL) in 2007, playing in all 64 games of the championship season while recording 10 goals and 27 assists. Piro played two more seasons in the SPHL for the Twin City Cyclones before taking his career overseas where he played two seasons for the Herford Ice Dragons (Oberliga), leading the league in scoring in 2011 with 26 goals and 30 assists for 56 points. He hung up his skates following the 2011-2012 season with over 300 professional games played and over 200 points. Piro then returned to the states to pursue a career in coaching.

Along with his playing experience, Piro has been a private ice hockey coach since 2002. He has worked for both World Class Hockey Development, Sports International Hockey Academy, and Elite Hockey helping run summer camps across the country and in Canada. He has organized and planned hockey school programs that have taught players of all ages the fundamentals of hockey.

Piro has been involved in numerous charitable organizations throughout his career, volunteering his time with the Easter Seals, the Special Olympics, and the Saint Vincent DePaul Society. Piro also established the SLAPSHOT CUP Hockey Tournament in 2008 as well as co-founded the Ziggy Foundation in 2010. The SLAPSHOT CUP is an adult hockey tourna-ment that brings 300 individuals from all over the world to Johnstown, PA for three days of competition. The Ziggy Founda-tion was founded in honor of Dave “Ziggy” Zeigler, a youth hockey enthusiast from Piro’s hometown of Johnstown, PA, and strives to provide young hockey players with scholarships, lessons, and equipment.

Piro is pursuing a Master’s Degree in General Education at Elmira College.

At this time last year, Elmira College women’s ice hockey coach Dean Jackson ‘03 was stepping into somewhat unfamiliar territory as he took over the reins of the women’s program. Then, about five months later, Jackson delivered Elmira’s third NCAA national championship in college history and now, a year from the start of their remarkable journey, he is prepping his women for a national title defense.

Even with all the success the women had last season, Jackson is taking a business as usual approach for the upcoming year. “Our approach hasn’t changed and it won’t change” says Jackson, the 2012-13 D3hockey.com National Coach of the Year. He continues “I think it’s important for us as a staff to take the same approach we did last year and for us to understand it’s a body of work. We will go day-by-day to prepare our ladies for each game and to continue each day to develop their skill sets. If we do what we need to do as a staff to get this team ready, we believe we will win hockey games.”

Preparation will be key this year as the women embark on an extremely difficult schedule that includes several NESCAC Conference teams as well as the always competitive ECAC West Conference. “Obviously our conference has some real strong opponents” said Jackson. “There are some opponents that if you don’t show up they can steal a win from you, so we can’t take anyone for granted.”

FORWARDSElmira had 10 forwards register double-digit points, and of those 10 players, the Soaring Eagles welcome back six for the upcoming season. “We were fortunate to have a lot of the depth of our scoring come back from last season” says Jack-son, who is welcoming back Elmira’s top three scorers in Ashley Ryan ’15, Tanis Lamoureux ’14, and Ashton Hogan ’15.

“We are counting on them to have a big year for us” Jackson said. “They were our go-to players last year and they will be again this year for the same reason. It doesn’t matter what level you are at, you always need your elite players to show up and be consistent year-in and year-out and I think that’s something they’ve estab-lished amongst themselves.”

Last year’s point leader, Ryan, is back for her junior campaign after receiving D3hockey.com All-American Honorable Mention and All-Region Second Team honors a season ago. In 2012-13 she led the Soaring Eagles with 31 points on 17 goals and 14 assists.

Elmira’s second leading scorer, and captain, Lamoureux is ready for another title run after totaling 27 points on 13 goals and 14 assists, as is last year’s leading goal scorer, Hogan, who led all EC skaters with 19 goals.

Despite having his three leading scorers back, Jackson still embraces his team scoring philosophy entering the new season. “I think the great thing about our team last year, and we have the same mindset going into this year, is that we score in numbers” stated Jackson. “ We had a lot of depth last year in scoring which is our plan again this year and the way we want to play the game allows for everyone to contribute, that way we won’t always have to rely on those top three to score.”

EC newcomers Anna Tude ’17, Johanna Eidensten ’17, Sydney Fischer ’17, and Jessica Prance ’17 will all be key additions this year. Look for Fischer and Prance to contribute with their size and speed, adding depth to the front line.

Tude and Eidensten both hail from Sweden where they played for the national program at the U-18 level. “They are going to be fun to watch and are going to be in some real quality situations right away as freshmen” said Jackson. “We anticipate them being impact players for us and we will give them every opportunity to do so.”

DEFEnDERSThe Purple and Gold return a slew of defenders from last year’s national championship team, including D3hockey.com All-American Honorable Men-tion and All-Region Second Team honoree, Brooke Wilgosh ’15. Wilgosh is the returning as the top scoring defender from a year ago after totaling 21 points on seven goals and 14 assists. She will also be serving as an assistant captain for the upcoming season.

“Our defenders are very involved in our point production” says Jackson. “Our objective is to have balanced scoring and we have some strong retuning defen-semen coming back. I think we are deep and that all seven of them can play every day which is important”

Also be sure to keep an eye on Lindsay Burrows ’15 and Ella Stewart ’14. Both players registered 11 points apiece last season.

In addition to several key returners on defense, EC welcomes a pair of new de-fenders for the upcoming season in Manhattanville College transfer McKenna Farole ’16 and former JV product Marissa Mongillo ’15. “McKenna is going to be very strong for us” said Jackson. He continues “and Marissa has been a pleasant surprise as she seized an opportunity to be a part of the team. They both will give us even more depth in the back end.”

GOALIESElmira lost a good one last year in Lauren Sullivan ’13, but the Soaring Eagles are confident with projected starter Lisa Marshall ’14. Marshall is coming off a year in which she collected eight wins while making 132 saves in just over 539 min-utes. “We look to Lisa to be the backstop for us this year” said Jackson. “I think her mindset coming in as the number one goalie really helps her, and I think for any goaltender it would, but particularly for her. You can see it already in practice, she’s looking fantastic and we are excited for her.”

Elmira also welcomes two goaltenders for their first year with the Purple and Gold. Kyle Nelson ’17 and Kierra Pietramala ’17 will both be compet-ing for time in their first season with the Soaring Eagles. Expect both play-ers to see quality minutes in their rookie campaigns.

OVERALLWith the combination of experience and quality newcomers, the Elmira women are poised to make another deep run in the NCAA Tournament, and if last season proved anything, it is that getting hot at the right time can make all the difference. “Our goal at the end of the day is to get back to the national tournament” stated Jackson. “So however we do that, that’s our goal. Once you get there, anything can happen.”

The Soaring Eagles open the 2013-14 season on the road as they compete in the ultra-competitive East-West Classic in Northfield, VT, a tournament that features four of the Top 10 teams in the nation. EC’s season opener is slated for Saturday, November 2nd as they take on #9 Manhattanville College at 2:00 p.m.

2012-13 SeasonIn her second season she played in 27 games recording two goals and nine assists for 11 points. In conference play she recorded seven assists and was a key enforcer on the EC defensive end. Her best game this season came on Dec. 8th against Williams College where she recorded two goals. The 2012-13 Elmira College women’s ice hockey season was one for the record books as the Soaring Eagles capped off their 2012-13 season with a storybook ending, winning a national championship. The Purple and Gold may have been the last team given a bid into the NCAA Tournament, but inspired play from goaltender, Lauren Sullivan ’13 and timely scores from her teammates brought home the third NCAA Championship in Elmira College history and the first since EC won back-to-back titles in the 2001-02 and 2002-03 campaigns. Elmira’s victory also placed them with Middlebury College at the top of the list of most women’s ice hockey championships in Division III history.

Head Coach Dean Jackson ’03 became just the third coach in men’s and women’s NCAA Ice Hockey history to lead a program to a national championship in his first season at the helm, joining former EC coach Jamie Wood on the list. The Purple and Gold finished the season 24-5-1 overall with a 14-2-0 mark in ECAC West play. The Soar-ing Eagles earned the number two seed in the conference tournament and finished as the runner-up in the ECAC West tournament.

EC earned the final at-large bid into the 2013 NCAA Tournament, but get-ting invited to the dance was all these women needed. The Soaring Eagles rolled through Bowdoin College 4-0 before taking on previously-unbeaten Gustavus-Adolphus in the national semifinals. The Purple and Gold, trail-ing by one late in the third period, got a lift from a Tanis Lamoureux ’14 short-handed goal to force overtime. Sam Curk ’13 scored the game-win-ning goal with 38 seconds remaining in the overtime period to give EC the dramatic victory and vault them into the championship game.

The finals figured to be a low scoring affair as the game featured two of the best goaltenders in the country, Sullivan and Middlebury’s Annabelle

Jones. Taylor Steadman ’16 put the Soaring Eagles up 1-0 in the second period and that was all that Sullivan needed on that day as she made every save possible. The fourth-year standout won the battle of the goalies as she recorded 30 saves to post the 1-0 shutout victory, the first shutout in a championship game in NCAA Division III women’s ice hockey history.

Elmira was led this season by six different players who earned ECAC West All-Con-ference accolades. Brooke Wilgosh ’15 earned a place on the All-Conference First Team after having another phenomenal season for the Soaring Eagles. She was EC’s highest point scoring defensemen with seven goals, 14 assists and 21 points. She ranked fifth in the conference for defensemen scoring, averaging 0.79 points per game, while registering two goals and nine assists for 11 points in conference play.

Ashley Ryan ’15, Ashton Hogan ’15, and Madison Johnston ’13 were all awarded places on the conference’s second team. Ryan and Hogan led EC offensively this season combining for a total of 57 points on 36 goals and 21 assists. In conference action, Hogan led the team with 19 points and finished second in the ECAC West conference for goals scored with 13. Ryan ranked seventh in conference play for points scored with 16, and fifth for goals scored with 10. Johnston was the second

leading defensemen scorer for EC this season registering a total of 21 points on six goals and 15 assists, while finishing her four year career with 22 goals, 48 assists and 70 points. She finished third in the ECAC West in defensive scoring this sea-son, averaging 0.81 points per game with four goals, nine assists and 13 points coming in conference competition.

Mary-Kate Gellerman ’13 received All-Conference Honorable Mention honors after leading the team in defensive points during conference play with two goals, 12 assists and 14 points. She ranked second in conference play assists and defensive scoring. Olivia Nyström ’16 was honored with a spot on the ECAC All-Rookie team as she finished her inaugural season with six goals and 13 assists for 19 points. She led the conference in freshman scoring, averaging 0.93 points a game, finish-ing with four goals, nine assists and 13 points in conference play.

Lauren Sullivan ’13 was a fortress in net all season but took her play to a completely different level in postseason play. The senior played in 20 contests recording a 1.17 goals against average and .942 save percentage en route to 11 shutouts. Sullivan finished the season with the best goals against average and most shutouts of any player in Division III. She also finished the NCAA Tour-nament with the second-best save total of any player in tourna-ment history making 105 stops in three contests. Sullivan fin-ishes her decorated career holding the all-time Elmira College single-season shutout record with 11 and is tied for most career shutouts with 22.

Sullivan, Ryan, and freshman Taylor Steadman ’16, who scored the only goal in a 1-0 win against Middlebury in the national championship game, were named to the NCAA Division III Championship All-Tournament team.

In addition to their conference accolades, Wilgosh was named to the D3Hockey.com All East Region Second Team, while Ryan earned a spot on the All-East Region Honorable Mention team. Jackson earned both East Region and National Coach of the Year accolades from D3Hockey.com. He was also recog-nized by CaptainU as the National Coach of the Year.

Lauren Sullivan ’13 picked the right time to get her EC single-sea-son record 11th shutout, recording 30 saves to blank Middlebury 1-0 in the nCAA Championship game.

Taylor Steadman ’16 scored the only goal in EC’s 1-0 win over Middlebury.
