On October 27th CMKC had it’s annual B-Match at Total Recall School For Dogs. The Match was a great success as we had numerous entries from several breeds. As part of the Match we had the Isanti County Sheriff ’s K-9 Unit give a demonstration on the uses of dogs in Law Enforcement. The Demonstration consisted of searching for drugs and suspect apprehension. The search for drugs consisted of 6 identical containers lined up a few feet apart. The dog would sniff along these containers until he found the one with the drugs. For training, security and safety, only faux drugs are used. Materials that smell like real drugs but have no narcotic value. The K-9 was 100% correct each search he did. In the apprehension phase, different types of scenes were used to show what a K-9 unit may encounter. One was just the handler and dog standing as if walking a beat. The suspect would challenge and run the dog would pursue and stop him. The next scene was the dog in the car and the handler was attacked by a suspect. The police vehicle is equipped with a door release mechanism, which is activated by the handler by remote control.

The demonstration last about a half hour only but gave a pretty good picture of how versatile dogs can be in doing any job they are trained for. The use of dogs in Law Enforcement can be dated back 2000 years. Minnesota has some of the best trained and known K-9 Units in the Country. In the past dogs were obtained for K-9 work by donation. Today they mostly imported from The Czech Republic, who has a very sophisticated breeding and training program. The Isanti County K-9 is one of these dogs. We would like to thank The Isanti County Sheriff’s Department in general anf the K-9 unit in particular for taking the time to give to this.

Respectfully,

Glen Kothe
