    Gardner on lead vocals,Dwight Hogan onbass/vocals, Aaron Shively onlead guitar, drummer JoeyGonzales, Nikko Vargas, alsoon guitar, and keyboardistShawn Holiday.

    The group has been togeth-er for about three years. They

    play a mix of cover and origi-nal music, focusing on goodol country.

    This is the Chris GardnerBands first time playing at theFolsom Rodeo and they arelooking forward to the gig.

    We are going to bring ashow, Gardner said.

    While some kids were

    learning how to spell at theage of 6, Gardner was busydiscovering the beauty ofwords in music.

    He grew up in the historicand agricultural town ofMarysville, playing in smallvenues and listening to Con-way Twitty and George Strait,intrigued by the genuinemessages in their songs, he

    said.The band recently released

    their first CD, The Answer,which is also the title trackand a fan favorite.

    Tamara Herbstritt, of Sacra-mento, has followed the bandfor the past two years.

    The Folsom Pro Rodeo,now in its 52nd year is the

    regions longest runningevent and maintains itsfolksy, small-town feel,Haverty said.

    jumps and does a back flipthat crowds go wild for, hesaid.

    That and the Captain Mor-gan pose atop the bike are histwo favorites, he said.

    Michael McIntyre, 22, ofShingle Springs, is an avidmotocross rider and said he

    cant wait to see Ayres ride.I ride and do a few jumps,

    but am not sure I would eventry a back-flip, he said. Imean, I take risks, but flyingthrough the air like that is a lit-tle crazy.

    McIntyre said he plans to goto the rodeo this year just tosee Ayres perform.

    I went a couple of timeswhen I was younger and it wasOK, but Ive have to see thisguy, he said.

    Ayres grew up in EaglePoint, Ore., and now callsMarysville his home.

    Ranching was what heknew, but once he started

    making money with hisfreestyle motocross stunts, heswitched gears and now trav-els extensively doing shows.

    Since 2008 Ive been travel-ing all over the country andIve been to Hawaii, PuertoRico and Canada for shows,Ayres said.

    From the age of 13 to 17, he

    competed as a barebacin junior and high rodeos. At the age of 10started racing motocros

    For 22 years, Kansas-nativeff Slim Garner has been

    oing just that as a rodeoown.When I was 17 years old Iarted as a clown and haveeen doing it ever since, heid in a recent phone inter-

    ew.Garner followed in his

    fathers footsteps into therodeo circuit as a clown. Forthe most part during hisyounger years, Garner wouldrodeo in the summers. He gothis Associates Degree in Ani-mal Science, but his true call-

    ing was center stage enter-taining the crowds at rodeos.

    Of his college degree, Gar-ner said, the degree and abuck fifty will buy me aMountain Dew.

    Garner said hes been pret-ty lucky when it comes toworking with bulls in the are-na.

    Ive been thrown about 15feet in the air by a bull andlanded on my head, he said.It would have hurt me if Iwould have landed anywhereelse.

    He has broken only one

    bone his arm in all hisyears with the rodeo.

    It has its ups and downs,and Im fortunate, Garnersaid.

    He obtained his Profession-al Rodeo Cowboys Associa-tion card in 2000, and he hasbeen traveling from 25 to 35rodeos a year.

    Cowboys also spend a lot oftime on the road.

    Now I stay within the

    state, Rosser said. I have a

    (baby) due in August. My wifeis pregnant. For the first yearsout of college, I went as far asJackson, Miss., for a fewrodeos.

    When not working therodeo circuit, Rosser is a gen-eral contractor with a metalbuilding business.

    ULL RIDING

    STEER WRESTLING

    The objective of the steerwrestler, who is also known asa bulldogger, is to usestrength and technique towrestle a steer to the groundas quickly as possible.
