Lynden again attracts top world cowboys, cowgirlsA real battle could develop for Lynden all-around title The face of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), Trevor Bra-zile, will also serve as the front man for the 2012 Lynden PRCA Rodeo. The nine-time PRCA world all-around champion, and winner of the 2011 title, will appear in Lynden in both calf tie-down roping and team roping, putting him in contention to win the Lyn-den all-around title as well. Brazile, from Texas, has been riding in the PRCA since 1996 and has earned 16 individual titles, including a steer rop-ing gold buckle in 2011. He has pushed his career earnings over $4.2 million. Bra-zile was also entered in the 2007 Lynden PRCA Rodeo. But the world’s top cowboy isn’t the only one coming to Lynden for the Aug. 24-25 rodeo, as over 220 contestants are signed up. Bareback riding, always of interest to spectators, has a whopping 13 entrants in it. Bobby Mote, ranked fifth in the world in bareback and second in the world in the all-around race, leads the competi-tion. And since he has entered the team roping event too, he will have a chance at the Lynden all-around title. Chris Paul, Lynden PRCA Rodeo or-ganizer, said it is unusual to find an all-around competitor mix a timed event See BEST on C6

with a roughstock event, making Mote’s accomplishments all that more unique. Mote, from Oregon, has four world titles to his name (also over $2 million in ca-reer earnings) and he finished third in the 2011 world standings. But taking home the top prize in bareback certainly won’t be a breeze for Mote, as Justin McDaniel of Oklahoma (one world title), Ryan Gray of Cheney, Wash., Matt Bright of Texas and 21-year-old breakout star Ty Breuer of North Da-kota are all signed up and ranked in the top-20 in the world currently. Idaho’s Paul Coppini, 20th in the world and first in the Columbia River Cir-cuit, leads the 14 bull riders signed up for that event. Chad Ferley and Jeff Willert lead the 24 saddle bronc riders. Ferley, from South Dakota, finished sixth in the 2011 world standings and has a world title to his name. Willert, also of South Dakota, had a bit rougher 2011, finishing in 26th in the world, but he does have a world title in his resume. He’s also no stranger to Washington, having won an event in Kennewick last year. The timed events boast a healthy list of competitors, including 34 calf ropers.

Lynden natives find success in rodeo eventsStremler grandsons living on ranch in Nevada compete at community college level For Lynden resident Janice Bogaard, there’s nothing better than hopping into the motorhome to act as co-pilot for husband Gord. And sometimes the destination in-volves rodeo. The couple consistently travels to watch their grandchildren compete in different ro-deo events in the Southwest. It’s something that brings joy to Janice and the rest of the family. It’s easy to have fun, however, when she’s cheering on national competitors who have been successful in different rodeo circuits at the high school and college levels. The Bogaards' grandsons, Christian Stremler, 20, Cole Stremler, 17, and Clay Stremler, 15, have had a passion for rodeo since they were young boys. The Stremler family moved away from Lynden 11 years ago, when the three boys’ parents, Mike and Barb, purchased a ranch in the Winnemucca area of Nevada. Actually, ranching puts the family a long way removed from standard conveniences and pursuits. Lew and Carol Stremler of Lynden also are grandparents. From the start, the kids were involved with rodeo, with Christian receiving plenty of attention from college coaches at an early age. He now competes for Meza Land Com-munity College in New Mexico, where he is

entering his sophomore season. Throughout 2012, he was the sixth-ranked saddle bronc rider among college students in the nation, but finished 20th at nationals in Casper, Wyo., in late June. “I’m so glad he’s off to college and pur-suing his dreams,” Janice said. “These kids go off and live their dreams before they get serious or get married. These kids have been around horses all their lives and grew up with horses. It’s great to see.” Christian is on a scholarship at Meza Land, with only his housing expenses not covered. His younger brother Cole looks to follow in Christian’s footsteps and join him in the college ranks next season. Cole is entering his senior year of high school and could have graduated early, but is hoping a solid senior rodeo campaign can get him noticed by col-lege scouts. Cole and Clay are both home schooled, but are able to compete in rodeo through the Winnemucca School District. Cole placed third in his division of sad-dle broncing at nationals, also in Casper, Wyo., where there were around 600 young competitors from across the country and Canada. Last, but certainly not least, is Clay, who is entering his sophomore year of high school. Clay recently placed first in saddle

broncing at the Silver State Rodeo, held in Winnemucca the first week of June, with competitors from all over Nevada. Janice and Gord have done plenty of traveling across the country to support their rodeo grandsons. But the long hours of driv-ing through the night are worth it, Janice said. “We try to be as involved as we can,”

Janice said. “We just love it. My stomach always gets butterflies when they compete but it’s so much fun to see. You hold your breath hoping they make the eight seconds (the required minimum on a horse in timed events), but when they do you’re just holler-ing and clapping.”

Best: Dean Gorsuch leads all-star list of steer wrestlersBattling Brazile in what could become the marquee event of the Lynden PRCA Rodeo are five more world top-20 calf ropers. Tuf Cooper, 22, of Decatur, Texas, is coming off a stellar 2011 season. He finished first in the world standings and won the world title in his event. Houston Hutto of Texas, Blair Burk of Oklahoma, Shane Slack of Oklahoma, and Adam Gray of Texas make this a top-heavy event. Last year’s Lynden steer wrestling winner, Dean Gorsuch, leads a list of 44 in the event, which includes 2011 world champion Luke Branquinho. Gorsuch’s Lynden win was one of six for the Nebras-kan last year and he also has two world titles in his history. Branquinho, of Los Alamos, Calif., grabbed his third world title with a dominating 2011. Those two will have company, however, as Trevor Knowles — the Oregonian who finished fourth in the world last year — and Utah’s Olin Hannum (10th last year) have joined the entry list. With so many stars entered into the roping events, the team roping compe-tition has plenty of intrigue too. Father Mike and son Brandon Beers, featured on this year’s poster for the Lynden ro-

deo, will go up against Brazile and Patrick Smith (currently ranked number-one in the world) and Clay and Chase Tryan (third in the world). The Tryan cousins, both from Montana, have a rich pedigree in the team roping event. Other head-ers lined up for the event include Nick Sartain, Manny Egusquiza Jr., Spencer Mitchell, Brock Hanson and Tyler Wade. Top heelers include Ryan Motes, Brad Culpepper, B.J. Campbell and Dugan Kelly. While the women’s barrel racing event is down to just 47 entries, nine of those are ranked top-20 in the world, led by second-ranked Carlee Pierce. She won 10 event titles in 2011 and the Texan has continued her quick rise to the top of the ranks this year. Chasing her in Lyn-den will be Oregon’s Brenda Mays, Nikki Steffes of South Dakota, Arizona’s Sherry Cervi, Colorado’s Sammi Bessert, Texan Robyn Herring, Florida’s Kaley Bass, Liz Combs of Eltopia, Wash., and Texan Lee Ann Rust. A host of Washington riders, espe-cially hailing from Ellensburg, are signed up. But the only entrants on the early list of contestants from the northwest corner of the state were Kym LaRoche and Jody Wallen, both of Arlington.

Saving lives, one ride at a timeChicks n Chaps a new event in Tough Enough to Wear Pink local effort

Cancer affects millions of families across the country, including thousands right here in Whatcom County. The Tough Enough To Wear Pink series is profession-al rodeo’s effort to help fight breast cancer. It’s been an aspect of the Lynden Rodeo since 2007. This year, however, community vol-unteers are putting together the first-ever Chicks n Chaps Women’s Rodeo Clinic at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, to benefit the cause. In previous years, Tough Enough To Wear Pink bracelets and T-shirts were sold in Whatcom County. Lynden resident Cin-dy Witman started the program five years ago and daughter Megan Kalma took over as committee chair. Over $23,000 in pro-ceeds has been donated to the Cancer Center at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham. “It’s just a great way to get the com-munity involved and give back,” Kalma said. The money is used to help cancer pa-tients with everyday costs, including med-

ications, clinical trials, co-pays and more. With such high success from selling merchandise, community member Kitty Lowe presented the idea of the Chicks n Chaps event to the Lynden Rodeo com-mittee and it was approved. Woman riders will spend time with rodeo cowboys learning how to rope and ride the buckin’ machine as well as gain basic information on the sport. It’s a 21-and-over event, with complimentary beer and other assorted drinks provided. The clinic will run from 4 to 5:30 p.m., with the evening’s performance of the Lynden PRCA Rodeo scheduled for 7:30 p.m. “I’m excited,” Kalma said. “It’s another way to get Lynden together to learn about rodeo and have a great time with your girl-friends. It’s an event to raise money and all the money stays local and benefits people from Whatcom County.” Sign-up was due Saturday, costing $65. For more details, contact Megan Kal-ma at 927-9497.

PRCA Rodeo today involves these eight events: Bareback Riding, Barrel Rac-ing, Bull Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Steer Roping, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping and Tie-Down Roping. In addition, All-Around is a special prize for those cowboys who compete in more than one event. Now in its eighth year, the Lynden PRCA Rodeo does not do Steer Roping. But it does have women's barrel racing. Here is a description of what’s in-volved in each event:

Tie-Down RopingGoal: Speed in roping a calf and tying three of its legs together.

Action: From the chute, calf gets a short head start. Cowboy carries a rope in one hand and a “piggin” string in his mouth. Once a loop is over the calf’s head, horse is trained to stop and pull the rope taut. Cowboy dashes down the rope, lays the calf on the ground and finishes the leg-tying. Calf must stay tied for six seconds to make a qualifying run.

Scoring: In seconds.

Bareback RidingGoal: Stay on bucking horse at least eight seconds, score points for technique.

Action: Sitting directly on horse, cowboy has only his own riggin’ to hang onto. Out of the chute, he must have his feet above the horse’s shoulders through its first move, then can spur it. Cowboy must keep one hand free at all times. Judging based on “exposure” to horse’s strength, spurring technique and horse’s bucking action.

Scoring: On scale of 100 points.

Steer WrestlingGoal: Wrestle a running steer to the ground.

A quick look at PRCA Rodeo's eight eventsAction: The contestant and a partner haz-er, both mounted, start out on either side of chuted steer. In the chase, hazer con-trols steer’s direction. As the wrestler draws even, he dismounts in order to grasp the steer’s horns, dig his boot heels into the dirt to slow down the steer and then wres-tle it onto its side. Clock stops when all four legs point in the same direction.

Scoring: In seconds.

Team RopingGoal: Speed of two cowboys in roping a steer to the ground.

Action: The team consists of a header and a heeler. Steer gets a head start out of the chute. Header throws first loop to catch steer’s head or horns and uses horse to pull rope taut. Heeler must catch steer’s hind legs with his own rope. When both ropes are taut and both horses face the steer, time is recorded.

Scoring: In seconds.

Saddle Bronc RidingGoal: With specialized saddle, stay on buckin’ bronc at least eight seconds, score points for performance.

Action: Saddle has no horn; cowboy’s only handhold is a six-foot braided rope. When gate opens, cowboy’s boots must be above the horse’s shoulders. After first jump, he can begin spurring. One hand must remain totally free of equipment, body or horse. Judges score on difficulty and control.

Scoring: On scale of 100 points.

Bull RidingGoal: Stay astride the bull for eight sec-onds, earn points.

Action: In rodeo’s most dangerous event, the rider settles on the bull’s back in the chute. His braided rope is wrapped around the bull’s girth and looped into his hand for grip. During the ride, one hand must remain free. Judges consider the difficulty of the bull’s spinning, jumping and kicking, and the cowboy’s degree of control.

Scoring: On scale of 100 points.

Steer RopingGoal: Speed in roping a full-grown steer.

Action: Similar to tie-down roping. Cow-boy must catch the steer by first roping it around the horns. Then he tosses the rope over the steer’s right hip and rides to the left to bring the animal to the ground. With rope taut, cowboy dismounts and runs to the steer to tie any three of its legs, which must remain bound for at least six seconds.

Scoring: In seconds.

Barrel RacingGoal: Speed in completing a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels set up in the arena.

Action: Time begins when horse and rider cross the start line and ends when they come back across the same line. Runs are timed to the hundredth of a second. Al-though a part of most PRCA-sanctioned rodeos, barrel racing is administered sepa-rately through the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association.

Scoring: In seconds.

All-AroundMany cowboys compete in more than one event at a rodeo. A special prize may be awarded to the top money-earner among all cowboys entered in more than one event. The All-Around Champion is a pres-tigious award.

2012 Miss Lynden Rodeo: Shanli DillardAcme native enjoys seeing kids' faces light up when they meet Miss Lynden Rodeo

Shanli Dillard has been riding horses since she was very little, so it's no surprise that her favorite part of be-ing 2012's Miss Lynden Rodeo is seeing the smiling faces of the many children she meets. "My favorite part is watching the little kids get excited to see me, and waving, and letting them pet my horse," Dillard said. Dillard, featured on page C13, has been riding horses for about as long as she can remember. Equestrian sports and the Deming Logging Show have been mainstays since childhood, and those competitive passions have cer-tainly stayed with her. A graduate of Mount Baker High School, Dillard participated in FFA, softball, wrestling and volleyball while in high school, in addition to riding and

participating in the logging show. Dillard first set her sights on being Miss Lynden Rodeo when a friend in-spired her to do so. "I had a friend in high school that was Sumas Junior Rodeo Queen, and I liked the rodeo, so I wanted to get into it," Dillard said. She contacted the fair office and signed up to participate in the Miss Lynden Rodeo pageant. Dillard was selected at the pag-eant, which took place on Oct. 21, 2011. She began official appearances as Miss Lynden Rodeo on April 27 at the Whatcom Educational Credit Union branch in Lynden. Her longest trip so far took her to Omak, and she will travel to Redmond, Ore., on Nov. 2 to appear at the Columbia Circuit Rodeo Finals.
